As I mentioned in my last post, the distance for hunters’ ranged attacks has been changed to “1-35″ yards according to the tooltip on ranged attacks.
This caused some concern among players about point-blank ranged attacks. But Blizzard responded: Kalgan posted a very short note on the Test Realm Forum that:
The tooltip will be corrected to indicate the 5 yard min range.
And then Drysc filled in more information on the General Forum:
There’s a tooltip error, it should be “5-35 yards”. We want melee and ranged to be kept separate, so that when in melee attack range you should not be able to use a ranged attack. There’s some amount of ‘give’ there, especially in fast paced PvP which can produce some temporary gray area but that’s fully known with this change.
Feeding the issue of the tooltip error is a bug currently where you can indeed range attack someone while being meleed, but that’s in the process of being resolved as well.
I’m a little slow off the mark this morning. Last night, just after midnight, while I was having fun slaughtering tigers in STV with Kaet my UPS died and took out my computer with it. A UPS is essential in Florida due to the frequent lightning storms, but mine was something like 7 years old and the battery had been acting up a little lately. I didn’t expect it to bomb out quite so spectacularly, though! There was no serious permanent damage to the computer (although I appear to have lost my DVD drive, which was also on the fritz) and I picked up a shiny new UPS (that’s also a good bit smaller and lighter, thank goodness!) this morning at Best Buy. But I’m only now getting back to my normal more-or-less-looped-in state.
At any rate, the Public Test Realm updated last night with a new 2.3.0 build. I am still sorting through the news, but WoWInsider has a good wrap-up on the changes.
As thuak reported in a comment, the distance for hunters’ ranged attacks has been changed to “1-35″ yards. In my quick testing, this eliminated dead zone entirely — there was no place where I could stand where I could not attack one way or another. However, this did not give me the ability to shoot at point-blank range — I’d still switch to melee when the enemy was close enough.
Unfortunately, as Gurluas reported in another comment, the Zul’Aman Bear can no longer be tamed. I’d like to hear from anyone who tamed the bear previously — do your pets still exist?
Hunters’ ranged combat distance changed recently on the 2.3 Public Test Realm, reducing the dead zone in which we cannot attack with either melee or ranged attacks. About the same time there were many reports that the distance for melee combat had changed as well. But Hortus posted today on the PTR forum that:
There was no change to normal melee range. This has been verified internally and independently by players on the PTR. I’m sure if you search you can find some threads with excellent screenshots.
There is a bug involving abilities with 8 yard minimum range, and it is being looked at.
Other posters in the thread suggest that some of the confusion may be coming from the way distance is measured differently with ranged and melee attacks. Unfortunately I haven’t been testing this myself, but I am anxious to hear what other players have discovered.
Greengorilla, a Horde hunter from Blackhand, wrote today to share some more very good news from the Public Test Realms. Seems he was exploring the new and improved Dustwallow Marsh and ran across a new tameable raptor — and not just any raptor, but one with an appearance we haven’t been able to tame before!
Goreclaw the Ravenous has the same look as the (untameable) Venomhide Ravasaur from Un’Goro. Goreclaw is level 39 and neither rare nor elite. You can find him in Bloodfen Burrow, a small one-room cave just northwest of the new goblin town of Mudsprocket in Dustwallow Marsh.
Thanks, Greengorilla, for sharing this great find! And thanks to Blizzard for finally letting us tame this gorgeous raptor.
The Public Test Realm updated today, and although I don’t see any difference in the patch notes there are some clear differences in functionality.
First off, guild banks are now in and seem fully operational. There are some cool bits there — the guild master can give each tab of the bank a different icon and name, for example. The only thing I don’t like is that there’s only one pool of money — you can’t allow some guild members access to the petty cash but reserve the deep pockets for the officers.
More exciting to most hunters, however, is the dead zone — or rather, the lack of a dead zone. I honestly didn’t expect this change to make it in so soon, but as of today on the PTR the base range (that is, with no talents) for ranged attacks is now 4-35 yards. Now I thought that melee range started at 5 yards, which would mean that I should never be up close and unable to attack again, but in testing I was able to get myself into a range where neither bow nor sword would work. But this was a pretty narrow range — a step in either direction and I was attacking again.
Unfortunately for you knife-throwers out there, it looks like the range on thrown weapons remains 8-30 yards for now.
