And now, time for an actual informative post!
You may be familiar with the Scalding Pools in Borean Tundra – the pools between Fizzcrank airstrip and Taunka’le Village that have been contaminated with oil by the #@$! gnomes.
The wildlife in these pools is sadly stained with oil, including Oiled Fledglings and Oil-Covered Hawks, and Oil-Stained Wolves.
All three of these creatures can be tamed, but when they are tamed they lose the oil (a debuff called Oily Coat) and revert to their normal appearance.
Except.
With some careful work it is possible to tame the Oil-Stained Wolf in such a way that it keeps its Oily Coat – as you can see in the screenshot to the right.
I first learned about this through the tireless work of Kyonarai, who generously shared her findings in a massive thread on the Petopia forums. (That’s her screenshot of her wolf Voidrage that I nabbed on the right.)
I haven’t been able to manage it myself, but as I understand it the taming process involves using the Alliance quest Lupus Pupus. (If you’re not Alliance or have already done the quest, you’ll need to find a friend to help you.) After that, it’s all in the timing.
Want to try it yourself? Check out Kyonarai’s original post. In addition, Zeilla has posted a helpful video on YouTube about how to tame the Oil-Stained Wolf in Patch 4.0.1.
A couple of caveats:
- Blizzard may remove the ability to tame these wolves at any time.
- Blizzard may strip the Oily Coat off tamed wolves at any time.
- At the moment, previously tamed wolves with Oily Coat are not changed in any way in the Cataclysm beta.
- However I’m not sure if you can still tame these wolves and preserve their Oily Coat in the Cataclysm beta.
- And either way this can still change at any time.
And a warning: Taking your Oily Coated wolf into the Arena will strip the Oily Coat debuff – permanently – and leave you with a normal black worg.
Haha, I was doing that quest on my mage yesterday thinking “Hhmm, it’d be nice to get one of these on Venaal, I know you can get them, but I forgot how …maybe Mania will eventually post something about them”
And here it is :D Thanks for the informative post :) Good to see you posting again after a long while :D
Indeed it is good to see you posting again.
As far as I recall, someone on the forums did indeed tame it on Beta. Doesn’t mean they won’t reverse that, but if I’m not mistaken, it’s tameable on Beta right now. So… I’m hopeful that Blizz doesn’t mind this one. ;)
The coat will appear to be removed during questing but will fix itself after a bit of time. It happened to me before patch 4.0.1. In other words it will retain the buff but won’t look black and oily. Then it fixes itself and looks sexy and black and oily, again.
Mania, I like the new pet changes. I’m raiding as a BM hunter with King Krush and Skoll. It’s awesome!
