For the Arachnophobes … to Avoid

Venaal asked yesterday in a comment about Deepmoss Webspinners in Cataclysm to “see this spider thing”. So I got some screenshots.

Some of these were taken from the ground and some from a flying mount. Because scale and orientation can be hard to see in cropped images, I’ve linked the full screen pictures from the thumbnails below. But even the cropped versions are pretty big.

First: a Deepmoss Webspinner reclining upside down in his dead pine tree, waiting for an unwary adventurer to walk beneath. [below]

He’s actually quite a ways up there. Thankfully he’s not very well hidden. [below left] As I walk below him, he senses me. He gives a warning chirp first, then flips over and slides to the ground on a thick strand of web. [below right]

This Webspinner has done a much better job of hiding. [below left] Even from the air he’s hard to make out. [below right]

I wasn’t quick enough to get a screenshot of him coming down on my head, but I did capture this image of the web he used. [below left]

Depending on the height of the spider, it takes more than a second for them to reach the ground. The one on the right, for instance, is lurking further down the tree so he can drop onto your head even more quickly. [below right]

Amusingly, once the Webspinners are on the ground they tend to stay there … but they go back to their resting pose. This spider, for example, is alive and well. He’s just hanging upside down … on the ground. [below]

(I suspect that characters who level through Stonetalon will see a lot less of this. Keep in mind that I was antagonizing these spiders and then flapping away on my flying mount.)

  1. :D Thanks for this. It sounds like such an improvement to the realism of the game (Well, spiders the size of chairs aren’t exactly realistic, but at least the behaviour will be more realistic :D)
Also, does this happen with other spiders elsewhere? Like the Green Recluses in Duskwood, or the Myst Leechers in Bloodmyst (The animation would work perfectly with those webbed creatures next to the trees! :D)

  2. I have to admit, I was totally wondering what this looked like. Now let’s imagine if the spider color was the exact same color of the leaves.
    *shiver*

  3. Venaal: The only other one I’m aware of right now is the Skitterweb Matriarch, the big bone spider at the end of the spider cave in Northern Silverpine. There may be some in Blasted Lands too — I can’t remember. And I haven’t been to Bloodmyst yet since not much has changed there I believe.

But I suspect we’ll see more spiders like this in the future.

  4. Ohh, I had one of them do that to me yesterday…safe to say I was quite freaked out that a spider jumped on my poor Worgen from above :x
