Cataclysm Screenshots: Plainstrider, Adder & Mastiff

Lucky beta tester Vabuka has generously shared more Cataclysm beta screenshots with us!

Today we have a Deviate Plainstrider from the Southern Barrens, a Sunburst Adder from Tanaris, and a Bullmastiff from Western Plaguelands.

All three of these beasts can be tamed right now in beta. (Of course, it’s beta so things may always change.)

Cataclysm Beta: Deviate Plainstrider

Unfortunately, the Deviate Plainstrider does not keep those sparkly bits after it is tamed.

Cataclysm Beta: Sunburst Adder

I think this serpent has got to be one of my favorite new pets. I can’t wait to tame one!

Cataclysm Beta: Bullmastiff

Now that’s a big dog!

  1. Mania, saw your post about canceling your accounts a post down, but I thought might be lost in the fray of posts that followed. You aren’t leaving us, are you? T^T

(That bull-mastiff is awesome! I wanna tame one now!)

  2. Nope, not leaving. I usually pay with a time card anyway, once a month, so cancelling my accounts (hopefully) sends a message without actually changing how I pay. Since that post, I’ve plugged in another time card for the accounts that are active right now.

  3. Geez, couldn’t they have picked something more attractive than a bullmastiff! An Irish Wolfhound would have been better and faster! Ok, I have Irish Wolfhounds so I might be biased!

    Love the Sunburst Adder!

  4. Well once they’ve branched out into dogs we can hopefully get some different types. I think the bullmastiff probably came from the feel of Gilneas, but I can easily imagine a *elf-inspired sighthound …

  5. I can attest to a Wolfhound’s hunting prowess so it would be an excellent hunter pet! Be kind of cute to see one with a dwarf.

  6. *hugs* Glad you stayed. We would miss you, Mania.

As for elf-inspired sight hounds, I have always pictured this dog http://www.doginfomat.com/saluki_jenny.jpg

That’s a saluki, and yes, I know she comes from a desert region, but look at her sleekness and her beauty and the bright look in her eyes…she’s just lovely. I would think they would go for either a saluki or a borzoi, or leave the borzoi for the draenei areas. XD It’s a Russian dog, fyi, so it makes sense. I would also take a great Pyrenees. =)

  7. Yeah. I’m a dog nut. But I own corgis, and for them to be an effective combat pet, I would have to have a Dwarf Dog Trap, that releases like 8 mini-dogs to tear up the mob’s ankles.

  8. Haha! I can just imagine your 8-mini-dog-trap!

I’ve always loved all the sighthounds. I wish my family had gotten into greyhound rescue, but instead my mother bred shelties. Amazing little dogs, but not quite as … elegant.

  9. Every time I see one of those darn mastiffs, I see it as a modified schnauzer with the way they have drawn the dewlaps, the shape of the head, and those ears.

I love bullmastiffs… yeah, I’d have rather been able to tame a scottish deerhound, or a greyhound, or heck, a corgi… but a bullmastiff colored schnauzer?

poop… so much for owning a dog in game :P

  10. It feels like they still have a bit of work left to do on the mastiff model, so I’m hoping some of that will be fixed up when they fix the animations. But … we’ll see.

  11. Awww, too bad that Mazzranache is now a common beast, I only saw one other person on my server with it so far :(

But the snake looks badass, I probably won’t tame it because it doesn’t fit Tauren very much, but it’s amazing!

  12. That snake is teh sexy!

Not too keen on the dog, however. Right now, according to BRK,their…wolves. I know it’s Beta, and they’ll fix this(I hope!),but they just don’t “float my boat” so much as some of the other pets have.

And yes, giant pink birds of death DO “float my boat”! lol!

    Kitairra

  13. Well, if nothing else, I hope that they get a different skeleton, because as a wolf….when they shake their heads, the jowls should flop around, but they stay board stiff. =|

Idk, I do love the foxes. …I’ll probably cave in and tameoneIreallylikethem…*grumble*

  14. Fran Briscoe –
I’ve never had an Irish Wolfhound but they are beautiful dogs. I think I could see them in WoW. :]

I like the Deviate Plainstrider… Pink is a color that actually suits the tallstriders and I like it. (Actually, anything besides the browns and grays in my opinion looks good on them.) I’m not too keen on the Adder. I’m not the biggest fan of snakes. And of course I’m looking forward to the Mastiff, but I’ve no idea if I’ll tame one. It seems to me that they will be all over the place, probably like the foxes.

I also saw “Corgi” in the comments… Mine says “Hi!”

  15. I know a lot of people are excited about the Bullmastiffs, and I’m sure they’ll grow on me, but right now, I’m just not thrilled with them. I’ve never really been partial to Bullmastiffs to begin with, so I guess I shouldn’t talk. I’ve always been very partial to the spitz-type dogs (I own a Siberian Husky and an Alaskan Klee Kai).

  16. Greetings,

can someone enlighten me how to tame that WPL bullmastiff

    - as alliance
    - as horde?

I checked yesterday, and the mastiffs I saw were friendly to my dranei hunter, and they all had an ownwer (alliance).

  17. nobbie: I know that they are hostile to Horde and I’ve heard that even though they walk with the Alliance NPC there, they aren’t controlled by them like some summoned creatures. Certainly I have seen screenshots of a Horde character with a tamed mastiff.

But I don’t really know about the Alliance. I’ll ping my informants and see if I can find out more. or maybe someone will answer here!

  18. I seem to be the one of the only people that dislikes that snake…The mastiff is cool and people can get a pink tallstrider easier now. Gratz for them!

With a new build coming up though, hopefully we’ll see screenshots of new(er) tameable beasts!

  19. Superb pets!
Too bad the strider doesn’t keep the sparks.
    Pink snake is a must-have!
Thumbs down for the mastiff. Not mean enuff..

  20. nobbie: Argh! The bullmastiffs are all friendly to Alliance! Turns out everyone who went to look at them for me was Horde. I’ve updated my info and the Petopia page. Thanks for letting me know about that.

  21. First post, but, hey, worry brings us lurkers out of the woodwork.

I admit I’m getting a bit concerned that the Alliance — other than the worgen — won’t have access to the mastiffs. Seriously, the only thing I see tamable are the wary mastiffs in Gilneas, and I’m wondering if those are part of the phased content or not. I assume so. >.<

  22. Welcome, Lucy!

*nod* The mastiffs in Gilneas are phased. I suspect — although I have no real proof of this — that Blizzard may be going easy on placing the mastiffs until some of the problems with the model are worked out. I mean, their heads still disappear into their bodies as they breathe. It’s really creepy.

But if we get later in beta — say when all the zones have been released — and we’ve still got disparities like this then we can gang up on Blizzard about it. *grin*

  23. Having had them around for most of my childhood, I have a strong attachment to bullmastiffs. Although the model isn’t quite right, (solid colouring instead of brindle or masking, too-droopy face more similar to a Dog De Bordeaux than Bullmastiff), I will definitely be looking to tame one in my recently-acquired beta!!

  24. Oh, and to the Alliance looking to get a Bullmastiff, you could try seeing if a friend can roll a Horde priest and MC them. Perhaps that would allow you to tame one, with a bit of haste?
