Cataclysm beta started yesterday.
And it took me completely by surprise.
For my day job, I have to finish an important contract by Sunday night, so I am only glancing furtively at the new Cataclysm information as I can in between writing Flex components.
But I did manage to get some early pet info up on Petopia, and the Petopia forums are roaring along with info as well.
The biggest pet-related news from yesterday was this bit from the patch notes of the first beta build:
- Five pets can now be stored with the hunter at all times. Any one of these five pets can be summoned via the Call Pet ability.
- The Stable will now store 20 pets. If a pet is moved into the Stable, its talents are wiped.
It’s unclear whether this means that we can have a total of 20 or 25 pets, and we know nothing yet about when hunters get slots or how much they may pay for them, but … TWENTY!
I’ll give you a second to swoon …
Okay, that’s enough swooning!
Now that the beta has started and the NDA has been lifted, I will be working on getting a spreadsheet to record pet changes up on Google docs or the like so we can all more easily share information. In the meantime, if you are lucky enough to get into the beta (or were supremely lucky and in the alpha) and want to help out with pet data, feel free to download the pet spreadsheet and record changes on it.
Since the 5 active pets all have talents and the 20 stabled pets don’t, it certainly sounds like 25 slots to me. I wonder if we’ll have to buy the extra stable space.
I know I’ll be going back and retaming all my old pets with that many spaces available :)
I’ll gladly break the whole of my account wide bank savings to buy those extra stable slots if need be. The alts and crafting skills can wait!
Swooning done, drooling starting. *blows the dust off the pet wishlist* Those foxes and that red serpent just look gorgeous!
WTB more character slots. I’m running out of room for hunter alts on my server. Ah, who am I kidding… I ran out of room months ago (this includes 2 nameholders). ;)
do hunters have their stater pets yet?? if so what is the pet for each race??
Sam:
I know Goblins have crabs, and Worgen have mastiffs (which I’m pretty sure are still classified as wolves, as of right now). Other than that I don’t know.
Monkeys?!
Will low level hunters (not new starter) get low level pets? My bank alt wants his pet.
Corwyn: Good question! I hope to get more up today about starter pets, but I don’t know if we know the answer to that one yet.
Wow…first order of business once Cata comes out, get a lava scorpion. Second order, drool for an hour or so over how cool it looks.

NEW BLUE POST NEW BLUE POST!!!!
“You have 5 active pets and 20 (or more) stable slots. You can summon an active pet whenever you want, out of combat. This replaces the remote stable spell. In other words, if you have a crab, a bear and a wolf, you can swap from wolf to bear in between encounters.
You must visit a stable master to change which are the active pets though. There are a lot of stable slots, so you can catch Spirit Beasts or rare spawns or whatever you want, even if you don’t think you will use them often.”
My guess is that we start out with 3 or 5 stable slots open at the very beginnning, then have to pay a juicy amount to unlock the rest.
it seem like something Blizz would do.
Also until now we have been forced to pay for each extra stable slots, so it just seem fitting we would have to pay for the rest.
But a increasing amount for each stable slot at that time would just seem evil.
Or perhaps we will be so lucky to start out with all stableslots open.
One can hope.
hmm…looking at the Starter Pets list…can I just say, “Called it!” WOOT! of course they were pretty obvious. I wonder if their skins are going to be random or if everyone is getting the same one? that would be a little lame. hundreds of Goblin Hunters running around with red crabs = boo.

what makes me the saddest about that table though is Gnomes: “Cannot be hunters.” Way to rub it in!!!
Oh well…maybe some day. :(
@Akyo: IF they go that route then maybe they will do the same as with the bank slots. Have the first five increase in cost, then the rest the same amount as number 5. Still a goldsink, but reasonable. Even at 85 and with the current dailies providing a nice income, I doubt there will be many hunters who will NOT grumble if they have to pay a few thousand gold for a single stable slot extra.
Being one of my favourite animals the idea of hunters getting foxes is almost enough to get me back into WoW…
But they aren’t cunning, how can they not be cunning? This is an insult to every word Baldrick has ever uttered!
“Is it as cunning as a fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on, and is now working for the UN at the High Commission of International Cunning Planning?”
Well no it’s not, its ferocity, darn it foxes really aren’t that ferocious!
I don’t mind paying for the extra stable slots as long as the cost isn’t something stupid like 5k gold per slot. Keep the price sensible and I’ll happily buy all the slots there. *Starts daydreaming of which pets to tame……..*
