Pets for the Worgen

Northrend WorgenI had fun last week thinking about what pets might match well with an undead hunter, so I figured that next I would do the same for worgen hunters.

Unfortunately, as soon as I started thinking this I ran into a bit of an obstacle. I’m just not seeing a huge range of choices here.

Okay, so worg and worgen obviously go well together. But really any wolf should do. Your worgen hunter and your wolf will likely share a deep bond of .. err .. canine-hood? Something like that.

And there are some interesting wolves available, I admit. I’m thinking that the Northrend worgs will be especially apt. (My favorite is the white variety.) And how about Ironjaw, the only two-tone wolf? Or a very rare Old Cliff Jumper? Ooh, and I bet a nice armored Warhound will be a fun choice.

But wolves are only one (admittedly popular) family. What else do we have?

Hmm … I guess a worgen might tame a cat. (“Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!”) I suspect that a golden lion or a yellow lynx might look good beside your worgen. Or Araga, of course, assuming you can find her.

But again, cats are very popular — which isn’t a knock against them, but does mean that choosing a cat doesn’t feel very special. Anything else?

The cat-like Spirit Beasts, plus Skoll, would work, for the same reasons wolves and cats would. Maybe go for the furry thing and pick up a hyena or rhino. (Actually I think a rhino would make a pretty neat worgen mount.)

Or hey, there’s always the Kurken. I love that little puppy. Or maybe a gorilla! You know, worgen are essentially were-wolves, and gorillas are essentially were-people! No? Well, I’m trying ….

But I’m just not feeling inspired here.

The Owl LadyhawkeI suspect that a big part of my problem is that I’m not really able to picture worgen characters very well yet. And while there is some art available for them already, I’m just not able to visualize them running around in Azeroth with a pet by their side.

Oh. Oh, wait. I’ve got it. The absolutely perfect pet for a worgen hunter.

Okay, now I am finally getting excited about playing these guys! Are you ready for this?

A bird of prey. Specifically a grey owl. And I will name her Ladyhawke.

  1. First Comment :D
Hmm, tough one. Well, i reckon for a worgen Wasps or Moths would be cool. I don’t know why.. Maybe going along with the whole Mangy Mutt kinda appeal. Worms (RFC model) or Scorpids i think might be a good choice too. I think the option choice seems to be similar to UD cause Worgen go in that whole classic horror class “Zombies, Vampires, Werewolves etc”

UD hunter with Ressan the Needler FOR LIFE!

  2. I barely remember ladyhawke, but i think a bird would be a good match for a worgen.

Remember that the worgen are humans with a worgen curse, not necessarily wolven humaniods by nature. So their thoughts and perhaps even their identity are still fundamentally human. I say this because I was having difficulty with conceptualizing them until i realized this.

  3. Seeing as how their starting area has a very Gothic/Victorian London atmosphere, I think one of the Stormcrow birds would be perfect as a raven/crow companion to suit the mood.

  4. oooh, ladyhawke and a classic SNL ref…

    owl, crow/raven,
non-tarantula looking spiders (work the dark things which lurk in forests)

or go Aseop’s Fables on people with a scorpid

  5. If I go the route of changing my Night Elf into a Worgen, then I’ll just keep the pets that I currently have. ‘Cause I love ‘em especially the 3 Spirit Beasts I have.

  6. Hm, I actually had the Ladyhawk/Navarre combination ages ago… Though not, ofc, in the extremely appropriate combination you suggest, Mania :P

I was thinking along the lines of a pig, named “Snack”, or possibly a bear (again Aesop, bears and wolves just go together)

  7. Part of the problem with the Worgen is that the pet will probably have to look good alongside a human as well. But I find humans (and thusly human hunters) sort of uninspiring in general.

  8. @eddy – apparently the only time you will be forced into a particular form is during combat, when you’ll have to be in worgen form. So if you want, you can choose to be in worgen form the whole time. :)

  9. A grey owl?? But Isabeau was a brown hawk – wouldn’t one of the brown hawks from Northrend fit more appropriately with that idea :). (Several of my forum RP characters are named Isaboe so I can’t say I don’t love your idea lol)

But I totally dig your idea – as I did something extremely similiar. In Vanilla WoW, once I hit Winterspring I was jonesing – because I KNEW I was going to tame an all white owl, and his name would be Jereth. I had that owl for a very long time through BC before I eventually had to give him up for a warpstalker (huge dragon fan and that’s as close as Blizz has gotten :/).

And I was very, very sad to release Jereth. Having the Goblin King (or David Bowie – yum!) as a pet is pure nerdlove.

(for those of you who may be uneducated in classic nerdom – go google Labyrinth – and then go rent or d/l it ASAP or you lose your nerd card…)

  10. Koriani: It’s been so long since I’ve seen it that I had to look up the cover on IMDB to see what color she is. She looked mostly grey to me there, although it was a bit hard to tell. And since I thought grey, none of the hawks would do. With brown, though, you’re right — definitely hawk.

  11. Actually, Isabeau is portrayed by North American Red Tails (yup, hawks, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-tailed_Hawk), though, fun fact, mostly by male birds… Guess the females were just too huge to look anything feminine enough. Yup, birds of prey have the right of it, us girls are the big bad meanies :P

Anyways, nothing in wow comes even close to these beauts, with their speckled chests and flashy red tails. Hm, though, why there is so relatively little variation in the basic colour of the bird of prey-family is odd, since other families have greatly varied skin tones, just look at the back and chests of e.g. wolves and cats, or the hued wings of the bats. But then again, bears have also only been granted one coat colour at a time. Too bad, I’m sure the pandas would be in high stock :P

  12. If Daug/Dawg/Doug hasn’t been claimed yet, you can call your worgen Daug/Dawg/Doug and his/her pet cat Katz.

Of course, you can just call your worgen Katz instead and your wolf Dawg etc.

  13. I’ve been itching to make a worgen hunter – I have my last space on my home server ready (going to kill off a low lvl gnome bank alt, mua ha ha!). And I’ve had my eye on those nice black worgs in Silverpine – so that’s where I’ll probably be taking mine when he’s lvl 10. Somehow I have the feeling that all the worgen will want to use wolves at first, just for the pack like humor of it. Unfortunately I also have a long list of Pets I Must Get Because My Lvl 80′s Stable is Full…

  14. I felt it necessary to respond, based on one simple fact: You quoted Ghostbusters!

I love you. I love your site. It helped me pick the perfect pet. You’ve even helped me name a gorilla of mine (Thundaga – who I still have!).

  15. The Cata-Preview made it look like the Worgen would have mutant boar mounts? I can’t find the pic but they looked like Boars to me…

So I think my Worgen hunter would have a Boar pet. His name would be “Lunch,” because that was his intended function…but of course, after she gazed into those soft brown eyes she just had a crab salad instead.
