The Art of Subtle
Last night I spent some time playing my little troll hunter, Erinye, on the Nesingwary realm (where she hangs with the US branch of the Petopians guild).
And since I was puttering around in Durotar anyway, I decided to do something I’ve wanted to do for a long time: tame the sweetest little overlooked scorpid in the game.
Beige scorpids live only in Durotar. There are two species: Scorpid Workers are level 3 and are found inside the Valley of Trials newbie area; Clattering Scorpids are level 5-6 and can be found around and south of Razor Hill.
At those levels, even most orc and troll hunters don’t give these scorpids a second look — they are more interested in the level 10 raptors and boars in the area. Or at least the sexy level black and red Corrupted Scorpids …
And that’s the other problem with beige scorpids, of course: they’re beige.
Against the red soil of Durotar they are drab and grey. See them scrabbling over the hard ground from the front or from the side and they blend in, so bland you don’t even see them.
But that’s only from the front. The true beauty of these scorpids lives under their tough outer carapace. Their underscales, you see, are a delicate robin’s-egg blue.
This isn’t immediately obvious to other players, but it quickly become very apparent to the lucky hunter who tames a beige scorpid. As you run along beside your pet, as you send it before you into battle, your loyal scorpid is flashing its beautiful inner colors only at you.
And once you’ve seen that, you realize how much of the lovely blue tint is visible from all angles. It’s subtle, sure, but it’s there — and the more you hunt with your scorpid the more you notice the blue. And the more you love your hidden little gem.
If you can appreciate the subtlety of their inner beauty.

Aww, what a sweet post!
I’ll fully admit to never giving these guys a second look before, but now you’ve got me wanting to tame one. :3
I love the feeling of discovering something great about a pet you’ve never paid much attention to before. That happened to me with Turtles. Never had an urge to tame one, but now that I’ve given them a test drive I adore them to pieces! ^^
I really liked this post. I think most people will openly admit that those early level scorpions are often looked over. Great find, great post.
Great post. I like that different people can find different things to love about their pets that others may not notice :)
You’ve sold it. If i ever make a Troll or Orc i don’t pay much attention to these guys, i actually play it for a while then delete it. But i’ve joined a RPPVP realm with my mate and we’re both hordies and the first pets i decided to tame are gunna be the Durotar Tigers and that rare black Scorpid (Who i’ve forgotten the name of), but heck you’ve solf it to me and i might actually get one!
those, and the bright blue ones, are the only scorps i actually like…
I’ve always favored these scorpids. Love them with all my heart.
Now I want to go and tame one.
Oooh, never noticed that before! :o
Very cute. :) If Orpheus has to go scorpid again, I’ll strongly consider this skin! xD (As opposed to pink….I think he’d kill me if I made him go pink again…)
I agree 100%,they are pretty…it’s just not my kind of pet. But I do love that
shade of blue…

I agree that these precious scorpids give players second thoughts about taming them because on the outside, they look very plain. However, it’s like opening a repulsive-looking oystershell to find a gorgeous pearl inside. These scorpids would actually be hard to see due to their plain camouflage so that would give hunters an advantage PvP-wise. I have actually tamed one of these cute guys on one of my hunters just so my mind won’t be set on those bright blue scorpids or the blue-spotted silver scorpid I love so much. I am a huge fan for scorpids as a whole.
Interestingly enough, that shade of blue is rather similar to the color scorpions look when under a UV light!
Huh! I wonder if that’s intentional?
if you wanna talk bright blue and scorpids, check out the Silithid Creepers in the Barrens area “Field of Giants”…

Note Ametrine’s comment. They really do look like that.
I totally agree with you. I recently started an Orc hunter and had planned on taming a corrupted scorpid but while i was wandering around trying to find one I stumbled across a clattering scorpid. I don’t know what it was exactly that made me decide to tame it instead but since then I have come to really appreciate its looks. its is far more subtle then its black and red brethren but I wouldn’t trade him for anything. Now I just need to come up with a name for him….
Wow, I thought I was the only person who’d noticed that! ‘Malanore’ has been my hunter’s loyal companion since level 10 (yes, she made a special trip to Durotar after I spotted this particular skin on Petopia, thanks Mania!) Scorpids are really very underappreciated, it’s sad. I’ve only ever spotted two other hunters with a scorpid pet, and none at all with the beige skin.
