PTR 3.3: Spectral Bear?

spectralbearBlizzard pushed a new build (10676) to the 3.3 PTR today and updated the patch notes to match.

There’s nothing particularly interesting to hunters in the patch notes, but MMO Champion did notice a new skin in the data: the Spectral Bear.

Is this the newest Spirit Beast? Stay tuned … and let me know if you see him on the PTR!

    *Chuckles* Wolves claws are used mainly for digging out dens in dirt or to find remains in snow or what have you. Traction, like was mentioned, is another one. They are heavy, but on the overall very blunt. A wolf will generally use it’s paws to hold down it’s prey. That being said, after a little research I discovered that wolves will also use their claws to rake their target, so…..yea, claw fits Skoll. That’s really neither here nor there, though. I don’t have a problem with Skoll knowing claw, I just think it’d be a better idea to make spirit beasts more unique then normal pet families. Yes prowl is situationally nice, and adds a nice little opening shot off of spirit strike, but it just doesn’t scream spirit beast to me. It doesn’t for the cats either, really. Loque’s eyes and mouth glow unearthly hues, and ALL of Gondria is covered in a pale aura. Skoll emits lighting. Not very stealthy. *laughs*

    Did some online digging about a possible spirit bear. It would be interesting if the npc was called Kermode, if this the next spirit beast.

    Kermode bear
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    The Kermode Bear (Ursus americanus kermodei), also known as the “spirit bear”, is a subspecies of the American Black Bear living in the central coast of British Columbia, and noted for about 1/10 of their population having white or cream-colored coats. This color variant is due to a unique recessive trait in their gene pool—they are neither albino nor related to polar bears, nor the “blond” brown bears of Alaska’s “ABC Islands”.

    Because of their ghost-like appearance, “spirit bears” hold a prominent place in the Canadian First Nations/ American Indian mythology of the area.[1]

    The kermodei subspecies ranges from Princess Royal Island to Prince Rupert, British Columbia on the coast, and inland toward Hazelton, British Columbia. It is known to the indigenous population as Moksgm’ol. In the February 2006 Speech from the Throne by the Government of British Columbia, the premier announced his government’s intention to designate the Kermode or spirit bear as British Columbia’s official animal.

    The Kermode bear was named after Francis Kermode, a Canadian who researched the species and a colleague of William Hornaday, the zoologist who described it.[2]

    spirit bears är stora och har stort rumpahål !

    Just throwing my thought out here, since I didn’t see anyone mention it yet:

    Is it possible that this skin is for a new (TCG) mount? Like the spectral tiger mount?

  4. Ryai

    Spectral Tiger has armor/saddle. Even the -kitten- has armor and a saddle, or armor atleast. The model is a bit choppy when compared to the tiger, and it is not as pretty tbh, and it lacks a saddle and armor.

    So no I don’t think it is a loot mount.

    there is no biological logic in WOW.
    just like there is no real physics
    and no real injuries.
    we should stop trying to find these things. they aren’t there. on purpose.

    @Palladiamors

    “neither here nor there”

    I hate that phrase above all others. I couldn’t even finish reading because I had to walk away.

    But what I meant was that they aren’t used as a primary attack weapon for canids. Sorry if my reply was a bit rushed, I could have expounded but I was at work and trying to get my thoughts across in a hurry. I will now walk away again to prevent myself from indulging in childish internet behavior.

    OH_MY_GOD! I found him!

    His name is Arcturis and he’s a Spirit Beast with exactly the same skills as all the previous SBs. I’ll put some screencaps onto the forums as soon as I get past the shock. XD

    @Safrienaer

    OMFG FREAKIN’ GRATS on first tame. =D So seriously happy for you! I hope you’re this lucky on the live realms. I know I’ll be releasing Loque for this gorgeous bear.

    @Jangalian

    Thank you! I’m not probably going to try for him on live though, as I already have three ferocity pets (two of them Spirit Beasts). If he were tenacity, I would trade my current polar bear for him in a heartbeat.

    Side note – thought his name looked hella familiar, so I put it into Wiki. Here’s the first answer it gave me…

    Arcturus (α Boo / α Boötis / Alpha Boötis) is the brightest star in the constellation Boötes. With a visual magnitude of −0.05, it is also the third brightest star in the night sky, after Sirius and Canopus. It is, however, fainter than the combined light of the two main components of Alpha Centauri, which are too close together for the eye to resolve as separate sources of light, making Arcturus appear to be the fourth brightest. It is the second brightest star visible from northern latitudes and the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere. The star is in the Local Interstellar Cloud.

    An easy way to find Arcturus is to follow the arc of the handle of the Plough. By continuing in this path, one can find Spica (α Virginis) as well—hence the maxim, “Arc to Arcturus, then speed on to Spica.”

    Other uses include the following –

    * Arcturus, a star known for its brightness.
    o Arcturus in works of fiction, for fictional references to the star
    * Arcturus (planet)
    * Arcturus (band), an avant-garde Norwegian metal band.
    * Arcturus (steamship), a passenger ship of the Finland Steamship Company.
    * Arcturus, Zimbabwe, a village in the province of Mashonaland East, Zimbabwe.
    * Arcturus Mengsk, the leader of the Sons of Korhal and later Emperor of the Terran Dominion in the StarCraft computer game series.
    * Project Arcturus, a failed Ancient power-source project in the Stargate Atlantis television series.
    * Arcturus Group, a consultancy based in Brussels

    =) Just FYI. And yeah, I know wiki changed the name, but there were no results for the original spelling. That’s the closest I could get.

    Got Arcturis today (Dec23) after 15-20 half-hearted passes by Amberpine Lodge. I’d set my hearth there (since I have the Kirin Tor ring I can still go to Dalaran) and whenever I log on I would hearth to Amberpine, fly down the hillside and not finding Arcturis (but finding anothr 1-5 hunters camping) I’d go on my way to do whatever I was going to do.

    Today, I log in, fly down and there he is, with nary a hunter in sight. I couldn’t dismount and abandon my wolf fast enough.

    So here I sit with all 4 spirit beasts and a the crock-o-slime in my Pokeball (i.e. stable); none are great raiding pets, but I don’t care. Here’s wishing Blizz would allow hunters to purchase additional stable slots (like personal bank slots). Heck, make each one significantly more – if someone wants to pay 10K gold for a 10th stable slot, why not?

    The poser is, do I abandon a spirit beast or the no longer tamable crock-o-slime?
