Patch 3.2.2 Hunter Changes

Much to my chagrin (because I was caught napping), Patch 3.2.2 made its way onto the live realms today. We’ve been talking about the hunter changes on the 3.2.2 PTR for a bit, and now we can see the changes in action.

From the Patch 3.2.2 patch notes:

Beast Mastery

  • The Beast Within: The duration of this talent has been reduced to 10 seconds. In addition, hunters with this talent will do 10% additional damage at all times.
  • Bestial Wrath: The duration of this talent has been reduced to 10 seconds.

Bug Fixes

  • Master’s Call: This ability now correctly removes the snaring component of Infected Wounds, Frostfire Bolt, and Slow.
  • Trap Mastery’s (Survival) tooltip now states the correct amount of snakes summoned.
  • Hunter Tier-9 2-Piece Set Bonus: Critical damage from Serpent Sting will now work properly with the Mortal Shots and Expose Weakness talents.

You’ll notice that the mana reduction during The Beast Within is not mentioned in the patch notes. Nevertheless, Ghostcrawler says it should be there:

This change should be in 3.2.2.

So mentally add this change to the patch notes:

  • The Beast Within now reduces the mana costs of all spells by 50% for 10sec. (Up from 20%)

And finally, Ghostcrawler posted on the forums about a buff to Volley:

The AP coefficient of Volley has been increased from 0.0586 to 0.0837. Base points did not change. This probably did not make the patch notes.

And that’s Patch 3.2.2 for hunters! … Or at least as much as we know now. If you run into some other change, especially changes involving pets, please let us know!

  1. Trowa Barton: Really? That’s cool. I have to hover over my existing ammo every time I buy more to check the name, so I don’t buy the wrong stuff. Is that at all levels, or just high levels, do you know?

  2. I’m livid – I thought I had more time to attempted a solo Onxy kill. Like another month or so. I’m beginning to feel that I don’t really care when patches go live, so long as there’s like a week or so notice and any postponements just announced flat out. Really, it’s not a downer knowing when a patch will be or when it’s getting delayed because some sort of effort on fixing bugs is being made. Patch days have taught me that I’m not one for surprises. I’m looking at you Hive Drone.

Feels like pvp is getting net nerfs all round for most damage-dealing setups so I’m kinda meh about it. Most. Not all. Thanks MLG….Yup, those frowning tools holding up ten thousand dollar posterboard-checks at live tournaments are the thing to look up to, yesseree!

  3. I’ll say it here, too. This patch was released on the EXACT date of Aion. Can’t tell me that happened on ‘accident’. This is at least the third time ((I think the fourth, but I can’t remember LoToRO’s release date very well)) they released an ‘exciting’ patch or other content ((PTR or beta)) at or around the time a new MMO was released.

  4. dont know if this is new or not as ive never really had a bear before, but when it Growls it stands up on its hind legs like a druid tank would when casting his/hers roar. Is this new?
Also as mentioned above. pets now got new feeding animations :)

  5. The increased damage to Volley is nice, can’t complain about that.

Ooh, I want to see the new pet feed animation. ^^ I’m assuming it will be similar to what happened with the baby venomhide raptor that you fed meat to. He would catch it as well.

And new ammo icons would be lovely as I hate that they all look the same. ><

I'm not too sure how I feel about the Bestial Wrath changes. I guess I'll wait till I try it out for myself. On that note, does anyone else raid as a BM hunter? I know it's not the 'ideal' tree for it, but I've been a BM hunter from day 1 and I hate the thought of changing my character just because others think it's not perfect. I like having my pet as a large source of my DPS as pets are the whole reason I adore this class. I'm a little stubborn on my views and I really don't want to change, but at the same time I know my DPS is sorely lacking compared to a lot of other hunters. =/

  6. I wasn’t really expecting it today, I didn’t figure they’d push one out in the middle of Brewfest to avoid problems. Well…I was wrong, obviously about the patch, but right, unfortunately, about problems… the Dark Irons can’t be successfully knocked out at range with mugs anymore when they attack Brewfest.

The Mammoth Cutter icon changed… it looks pretty good now. Much easier to have it different than the regular level 75 ammo, especially.

  7. This patch was released on the EXACT date of Aion. Can’t tell me that happened on ‘accident’.

There is no way that any of them was an accident. They’d be foolish not to do something, at least from a business viewpoint. You’d think the competition would stop releasing MMOs on Tuesdays!

Oh, and Tori, you do have another post showing. A good sized one at #9. Maybe Mania fixed it?

  8. I won’t be able to test my spec until a future date, my guild leader and some of the officers suddenly decided to faction change without really telling anyone. They took the better stuff from the guild bank when they did too.

Rest assured guys I will inform you on whether or not my DPS has improved since this patch.

  9. So i have a question….is king krush even tameable now with the BW changes? his fear goes off a lot…not sure if its possible anymore =[
Figures though, finially got loque and have been looking for krush, but have found loque 3 times in the past 2 days. Any idea on how to get krush or if it is possible?

  10. I played around with BW for awhile today. My net response was ‘no, it’s not a nerf, but only if you have a wolf’. The +10% from the talent stacks super shiny with Furious Howl, but I noticed a distinct drop in DPS when I went to my spirit beast. Sadness…

  11. Hawkshadow: if you can cram BW to under 10 seconds, it’s solo-tameable; other than that, priests have Fear Ward, too. Make a priest buddy!

  12. That Aion thing is very interesting. Least on my server, it’s running really bad all day, everywhere. WG was pretty buggy too, map icons would go missing, instance borders/teleports would take minutes. I’m thinking this patch really needed at the least a couple more weeks to iron out the issues.

(conjecture, but I wonder if this was an activision mandated thing. Has this happened before with other mmo releases? Nothing seemed to happen with Champions Online, unless these were lumped together or something.)

  13. I just wanted to warn you guys. The company behind Aion is NCsoft. I tried a game of theirs called Lineage. When they had a patch it tried to put malware on my machine. If you are playing their games please be careful. Their support staff was incredibly rude as well. This may be an isolated incident, but want to let people know especially my fellow hunters.

  14. Bulletdance
Thank you… I have never played any of their games but a friend of mine does, I think. I’ll ask him and tell him. Thank you again

  15. Never played Lineage, but I never had any problems with any other NCsoft games I played. And I never said I was playing it, just that it was Blizzard doing their usual.

  16. just fyi has anyone else noticed that now regular flyers now cost 225g instead of 500? didnt remember readin it on notes but happened to see it today

  17. @Kime

Noooo, we just got the Kill Shot back in melee range! D: Damnit Blizz, try to decide what you want to do with it! I’m tired of randomly noticing that “hey… Kill Shot can/can’t be shot in melee”.

I can’t wait to see the new Mend Pet animation. o.o Too bad I’ll have to wait for another four or five hours before I can get online. If only the EU servers weren’t still down…

  18. *ahem*

    Dear Blizzard,

I play a BM hunter. Main spec. I raid, I solo, I instance.

    Sometimes I PvP.

After observing the changes to Bestial Wrath, I have to say that, while I’m not thrilled about the almost halving of it’s duration, the 10% overall boost to damage?

Oh dear monkey lord YES, daddy LIKES! For the first time since the great BM nerf of 3.0, I can actually give other specs and classes a run for their money! Hell, I was roflstomping people in WG today, and it felt GOOOOD!

  19. “You’d think the competition would stop releasing MMOs on Tuesdays!”

*laughing my butt off right now*

Can’t wait to see the new feeding animation, I have a venomhide as my pet/mount on my lil Troll so that’ll be cute! Does the food object change by type, or is it all just meat?

  21. Hmm.. Am I the only one who can’t see the new Mend Pet animation? Every time I cast it the game freezes for a second, skipping the supposed new animation altogether. o.O All I see is the old animation minus the green glow.

  22. WTB ability to edit my posts… After reloading my UI the animation is exactly what it used to be. o.O Hands glowing green and no reaction from the pet’s side.

  23. @Palla: I’d do it that way if I was Blizz too :)

@Zveda: No, the earliest we expect the improved pet scaling is in 3.3 (but keep in mind that the pet scaling code is known to be a bit clunky, so there is still a risk that they will run into showstopper issues with the idea, the way they did for consumable ammo. If that happens it may get postponed to Cataclysm).

@Safrienaer: the new animation that people are talking about is the one for Feed Pet, not Mend Pet. I haven’t seen it myself yet, and probably never would have if it hadn’t been mentioned here (I haven’t fed my pet directly since I got the Mend Pet glyph).

@Tori: better to play the game the way you enjoy rather than doing something you don’t like in the search for better numbers (as, from your question, you clearly aren’t the kind of player that just likes whatever gives you the best numbers!). Besides, if you don’t really like MM or SV in can be hard to muster up the enthusiasm to learn the rotations well enough to let you actually start seeing those bigger numbers (one thing Blizz do have right at the moment is that with comparable gear a well-played BM hunter *will* outdamage a poorly played MM or SV hunter).

  24. Tori – I’m also a BM raider. I HAVE bought Dual Spec to try out the others, but I quickly regretted it, so I kinda wasted 1000g lol

  25. Ah, right… I had forgotten the Feed Pet ability even existed. XD *goes to try it out* Thanks for pointing that out, I have no idea how I was able to mix the word feed with mend. *blush’

  26. Glad to hear I’m not the only one. ^^

For a short while I almost considering buying Dual Spec, but then decided against it. I’ve read up about the other two talent specs, but I honestly don’t think I’d enjoy myself nearly as much. It would be so different from BM, and I really like the style of Beast Mastery.

My hunter is still upgrading her gear, so I know once I actually get some nice tier sets my minor DPS problems shouldn’t be an issue anymore. :)

  27. @Tori

Well, you can always dual BM specs, one for dps and one for pet tanking. That’s what I did. Also a little perk it has is that when you change specs, the 30 minutes cooldown on Call Stable Pet gets reset, so it’s like you have a permanent stable master on yourself. Only problem is that you lose all your mana, but Viper brings it back up at a good enough speed, even faster if you’re using a Cunning pet. Though I’m pretty sure that once we have Focus instead of mana that will be even less of a problem. =)

  28. @Shinryu Masaki

Thats what I did- Dual spec two different BM specs, and it rocks. Keep the cookie cutter dps BM spec on one side, then have a special tank spec on the other. That plus Call Pet to get to the tanking pet at need = win!

  29. That brings up a good point tho, Cunning Pets will be useless if their family skill doesn’t get changed. I mean a 3 min cooldown for focus regen? Why- they’re gonna make Steady our spamshot to return focus and all that crap.

So well Cunning get a decent family skill come the change? :/

  30. i can confirm new bear growl animation it looks cool :D lol almost makes me want to use growl in pvp just to see my bear rear up and slap them

  31. Ooh, I just heard about the new feed pet animation… and I’m in the middle of a long RP session on my paladin! Rrgh. I am so going to have to check this out once I get the chance, but it sounds ADORABLE.

Since I raid as MM (not just for the numbers — I really like the spec!) and have a survivability-based BM spec for soloing, I often found a chunk of BW wasted between pulls, since I tend to kill things pretty fast even in my tanky spec. Now? I’m LOVING it. It helps me kill things a lot faster, and I’m not finding the cooldown partway wasted while I’m running to the next group of mobs.

Either way, I must say I’m enjoying thiss patch so far. :)

  32. You’re right Ryai, I’ve been wondering about the fate of Roar of Recovery as well. One thing they could do is to make it an instant 100% Focus regen skill, otherwise I don’t really see what else they could do with it. Hope it doesn’t get removed, I like that icon picture. =P

  33. rargarflajakelrafakerjfa f! I keep blocking the Focus change from my mind (purposely) only to have you guys bring it up again mid conversation… i REALLY don’t want the focus change… *sigh*

  34. And tbh, blizz might even just scrap and remake pet talents too, they seem to be hinting they want to change em up a bit, or at least give us the preference to choose their spec at the beginning

  35. I suspect the focus change in Cataclysm is going to make the massive pet revamp in Wrath seem like a minor class tweak :)

I wonder if we might also get a 1 second GCD out of the change…

  36. Just remembered now a hunter talent, Careful Aim- it ups your dmg for xx% of your intell.

Would they remove it? Or revamp it to like being boosted from agility or stamina?

Just feels like it’s breaking something that didn’t need fixing >>

  37. @Ryai: between the mastery changes (e.g. no more Lethal Shots) and the focus change (e.g. no more or significantly altered Efficiency, Invigoration, Hunting Party, Careful Aim, Thrill of the Hunt), we can expect to see a pretty major revamp of the hunter talent trees and abilities in Cataclysm.

As far as “why fix what isn’t broken?” goes, a common refrain from hunters that have been playing since the original WoW beta is that hunters using mana as a resource system was something Blizzard only resorted to because they couldn’t get focus to work as intended. Obviously, Blizz feel that they can now implement hunter focus in a way that will actually be fun, without being identical to a rogue’s energy system (definitely similar, but not identical).

  38. As the Focus vs Mana thing goes… I would suspect the PvE will not be too harshly affected, possibly even improved. BUT any high-movement fights (some bosses and ALL PvP) might get hit hard by it… as you don’t use a lot of Steady Shots on the run. They could offset this a bit by allowing us to “auto-shoot on the run”, but they seem unlikley to do so.

One actual advantage to it is that our major gear stats will now be Stamina and Agility… period. Int will join Spirit and Str as being pretty much useless for us. The Int part of it is such a balancing game as it is now, and that part will not be missed by me (in that aspect anyway).

  39. Here’s the thing I have been thinking about…… BM hunters don;t really need haste because of talents in the BM tree causing accelerating attack speed. Now, since BM doesn’t need haste, and haste will be needed to make focus regen faster, dopes that mean BM hunters will have to stack an otherwise worthl;ess stat just to get the accelerated focus regen? If so, that is gonna push the dps meters even more in favor of the oter spec. Unless they change a lot of things with BM, I have a feeling that the haste is gonna be another thing bringing down Bm dps.
