Allow me to introduce my newest character.
Yes, it’s true — I bought Champions Online(*). And yes, I created a character with wings and, if you look closely, claws and a tail.
And yes, she has not one but two wolves with her. The Supernatural powerset isn’t really like a WoW hunter in any real sense, but when I saw that I could get wolves, I had to try them out.
And yes, those wolves are badly modeled. And no, I can’t name them. Or feed them. Or, so far as I know, ever get anything other than wolves (although I admit that I have hardly explored this in depth). And unfortunately they are as fragile as tissue paper. Also, when I ‘dismiss’ my wolves they fall over dead, which is rather off-putting.
But hey! Two wolves! *grin*

* I don’t want you to think that Champions Online is the reason I haven’t been posting much lately, however. No, the reason for my silence is another game entirely … one I am currently working on and which I hope one day to tell you about. In short, my husband and I were hired to build a combat system for a small game, and the work is so much fun I’ve had trouble dragging myself away even to play WoW.
haha cool looking char, I would have went with something like that just becuase of the wolves…
>.>
( <3 wolves forever!)
haha but yeah that secret project thing sounds intresting…cant wait to hear more baout it!!
Take care,
Shadowkaizen
The secret project will be like some uber spy mission for LotRO or something *snicker* yeah my little brother kept obsessing about it when he tried the beta thing, but now doesnt care bout it…
Champions Online that is, not LOTRO
When I get my computer back from the shop, maybe I will try a Gadgeteer….
There’s some really fun ones. I wish I remembered what it was called, but I’ve been wanting to try one out where you can choose to be a dragon. My bf also promised to lend me guildwars.
I haven’t played much yet, but I do have a couple of toons in CO already :)
One was an attempt to make dark wizard, but I couldn’t figure out how to make someone look old or have proper flowing robes in the character creator (it was probably too hard for them to do good flowing sleeves so they left them out).
The second one which hasn’t even made it out of the starting area yet is a pint-sized brick* made of granite :)
*For those not familiar with the naming conventions of superhero RPG characters, bricks are basically tanks – they’re tough, hit hard and can take a pounding.
What class, or powerset, or whatever they’re called in champions gets you the wolves?
Thinking of giving that a go soonish
I did something similar, rerolled my ranger character that I have made in almost every MMO since UO. There always some sorta bow-wielding ranger-like class, and Daffyd gets reborn each time. This time hes an archer, with an outfit looking alot like the Thorny Vine armor from EQ, and hes 1 level away from picking up his first set of wolves. There’s a second set available in the Primal Sorcery tree as a Circle summons, but I will have to spend an advantage point to make them controllable. But hey, 4 wolves and arsenal of arrows that go boom, what more can a hunter want? You can mix n match your powers, once you get enough from your core set to meet pre-reqs, so you can truly design any kinda character you want. I have my Monk from EQ remade as well, with some regen an other tricks from the supernatural tree (Iksars gotta have regen!). And my new alt, Based off a little known disney character is gonna get most of the goodies from both Telekenesis, and Telepathy. Gah, I;m such an altaholic. Just last night I made 5 new alts, saved their costumes, then deleted them. Just for fun. I have close to 30 alts stored for future use this way, and growing. I had even more when I used to play CoX.
oops, sorry for the wall-o-text. Just woke up and fergot proper paragraph structure…
Mania the Game Developer O.O /cheer!!!!!
Ooh! I am in CO too.. (Fimlys, hehe).. We have a Super Group even which you are welcome to join :) It’s called The Twitterati .. Let me know
Fimlys: I read that first as “which even you are welcome to join”. *grin* Thank you very much for the kind offer, but I don’t feel I can actually add anything to your supergroup right now. Other than that screenshot, I haven’t logged in for days and I may not again. It’s not a bad little game, but not really my thing.
@Moltenrain: I played a fun game once called Horizons, where you could be a dragon. The game could have been really awesome, but it kind of went down the tubes, and has about 100 players acrosss all (two!) of its servers now. It’s old and broken, but I still miss my dragon. :(
@Drax: I still miss my tamer from UO! I was just telling my boyfriend the other day how I miss true pet classes. WoW comes close, but no cigar. I miss taming dragons and nightmares… And then blasting things with spells from afar with a flying noodle of DOOOOOOM!!! (Corp Por!!)
aww man, I miss horizons too. It had so much promise, an epic vision. Then they just threw some crap in a blender and called it a game instead. Despite the flaws, it was an awesome concept, but the developers never followed through. Changing hands so many times didnt help. I still wanna get back in and try it now that its supposed to ahve been overhauled, but I cant seem to get my account info to work.
And yea, Daffyd started as a wandering healer, dabbled in taming, and finally settled as an archer. But his dabbling left him a grandmaster mace user, and he would 3-shot PKs. I had so many GMs called on me it wasnt funny, but all my gear was legit. Skill > Gear. He didnt really shine till EQ though. Nothing beat a 3-hour kiting session in western wastes…
Three questions about Champions…
1. is it an online multiplayer? (some of the trailer gameplay doesn’t look like it is…)
2. do you have to pay monthly for it?
3. is it fun?
Well, I don’t think our supergroup has restrictions like.. actually playing the game.. :) If you are on try to find me. It gets a LOT more fun as you get further in.
Its a MMO, Much like City of Heros/Villains. In fact its a second-gen of those games, made by the original creators. There is a monthly fee, same as most MMOs, 15 a month with savings on other sub packages. If you are an alt-o-holic like me, its loads of fun. There are a few bugs like most new games but they are hammering them out fast. I’m enjoying it, but the seasonal events will soon be dragging me back to WoW. if I keep my CO subscription is gonna depend on wether my friends keep playing. I’m gettin sick of soloing.
Then again I may do like I did with CoX for 5 years, renew from time to time to join special events and make a ton of alts when i get burnt out on other games.
Yep, it’s a subscription MMO similar to WoW (same price even). The major technical difference is that instead of using separate servers the way WoW does, every zone is instanced instead. It’s a nice approach, since you don’t have to worry about having friends that you can’t play with because they’re on a different server and the zone instances are always pretty well populated. (Also, if you’re in a team with someone, then you will both end up in the same zone instances by default, unless you deliberately switch to a different one).
Oh, check this out mania: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Rainbow_Phoenix
One of my bf’s characters has one of these; it’s the rarest pet in guildwars.
I never understood how you tamed creatures in Guildwars, nor did I get the henchman system. That, and it’s so lonely. I’m more of a social player…>.>
Good to see you’re trying out CO. I’m currently playing it too, taking a break from WoW. I’ve got some pretty good characters I’ve made, ranging from a T-Rex (big head and tiny arms included) to a hero based on my hunter’s pet ghost wolf :D. If ya ever wanna see ‘em, or just chat, my global is @Slapperfish. Cya there. :)
liek zomgz! u tratorz! u suposed 2 B posting wow stuffz!
Ok that hurt my brain trying to type it…in all seriousness, I have been muddling in CO too, and I got to 15 and I was like, “ok…got another costume…im bored”. I still have more fun in WoW and since the faction changes its brought alot of my lesser used characters new life, so ive been having fun again. :)
I’m glad Blizzard made pets, companions, and such despawn rather than fall over dead when no actually killed. I think some things used to do that, but either I haven’t encountered them in so long that I forgot what they were, or they changed it. Still, if you check your combat log when one of those Elder Stone spotlights disappears, it will say that it died.

Oh, and the contract work sounds interesting. I hope it stays fun for you two. :)
Yeah, I can’t see CO holding my interest past the free trial period either. Still, was interesting to have a look at it (and I still have a few weeks left to play with it).
You should try Jade Dynasty Online sometime :D Its free to play and you get pets. There is a wolf, but not til later on you start out with an odd looking pineapple thing or a piglet. While that may not sound appealing its quite an interesting game where all player no matter what class get pets! And the mounts are beautiful.
hmm the problem with games like that is that you can use rl money and often those players have more advantages, which makes it annoying for players who can’t afford it. I ment Jade Dynasty.
Is there a 10 day free trial or something like that for Champions?
Rottingham: Not yet, I think. It just launched.
Thanks you Mania :D

Champions is fun, but my other half and I have already decided it’s not something we’ll play longterm. So much fun creating characters though! I had all my slots full after a week. So many new mmo’s with no pet class, or a pet class that, well, sucks. Sucks as in, pets are just a distraction. Thrown in so they can say they have them, with no thought or effort put into making them fun.
Makes me sad.
