BlizzCon 2009 – I Am Not There

So BlizzCon 2009 is beginning to ramp up. The good stuff doesn’t start until tomorrow, but people are already lining up to get their badges — and blogging about it, the lucky buggers.

I’m not, of course. I’m not lining up to get my badge and I’m not blogging about it. Instead, I’m blogging about not being there to line up and get my badge, because once again I couldn’t afford to attend (and I doubt I could have gotten a ticket even if I had the money to go).

But I’m not bitter! Well, not much. Although I would absolutely love to be at BlizzCon — mingling with players and developers, breathing in the heady atmosphere of other people who actually understand our weird little hobby — I’m still planning to enjoy the event from home. (And I won’t even have to skip any dailies to do it!)

I ordered the BlizzCon 2009 Live Stream and starting tomorrow at 1:30pm EDT I will be plastered to my computer absorbing every second of excitement (and repeating anything that seems useful here for anyone who cares). I plan on using every inch of both monitors — one to watch the live stream and one to keep an eye on the WoW websites and live bloggers who will doubtless catch any tidbits I miss. Oh, and Blizzard’s Warcraft Twitter feed, of course.

I don’t know what I’m going to do tonight, though. So far I’ve been reading about lucky attendees standing in line, but that doesn’t hold me very long. Maybe I’ll try to take it easy and rest up for tomorrow. Maybe I should be smart and try to get more legitimate work out of the way so I’m not too far behind after the weekend.

Or maybe — and most likely — I will obsessively trawl the internet looking for snippets of information and posts about the BlizzCon experience to help me feel like I am really part of things. And you are welcome to join me! Feel free to link anything interesting you find in the comments.

[edit] I wasn’t aware of the Fansite Summit that takes place during/before BlizzCon, but Wowhead attended and has a nice write-up of the bits they can talk about on their blog.

[edit/aside] MMO Champion has some pictures up of the lines outside the convention center and whatnot. I only mention that because I was struck by this picture of geeks in wait. I’m pretty sure I’ve dated most of those people at one time or another.

  1. Oh, how I wish I could be at Blizzcon! Is it slightly ironic that my whole family plays WoW, but we haven’t gone to one Blizzcon yet? Heh. I too will be constantly checking every WoW blog known to mankind tomorrow to see if the rumors(Especially about the Worgen and Goblins!:D) floating around are true. Enjoy the show, Mania!

  2. I’ll be watching the stream as well since I couldn’t get a ticket (due to it selling out at the person just in front of me “noooo!”). Anyways, I will be on that live stream all day, probably blogging about it myself, and then nerding it up by posting my opinions on it.

Plus I want to see Ozzie! It’s weird, I don’t even like that style of music, but I still want to see it.

But why do I have to wait til October for my murloc DDDD=

  3. Sigh, I wish I could go to blizz con, but alas my cons are limited to Anime ones lol. And I was to poor to get the live view via tv…no army murloc for me :( ah wells. though i will cound on you Mania to keep us updated, sooo…no pressure :P

  4. I did DragonCon in ’99. Honestly, I can skip the convention experience. All I want to know is what the heck is going on with any expansion. I want my Blood Elf Warrior and Troll Druid! Or, at least, I want to know if I should abandon that whole idea.

Other than that, I’m not all that worried.

  5. long time reader first time comenter (one of the loads ;D)

just want to say love the website readed every blog so far and when are they showing blizzcon?

  6. I added a link to the Wowhead blog post I just ran across that talks about the BlizzCon 2009 Fansite Summit. Nothing Extraordinary there but it’s something to read. :>

cresselia: BlizzCon proper starts at 11am Pacific time tomorrow morning, I believe (which is 2pm here on the East Coast of the US where I am). The video feed for it costs about $40, and you can learn more about that here: http://blizzcon.rayv.com/en/default.aspx

  7. I really wanted to go as well, but damn money and parent not being ‘on the ball’. Atleast it will be fun looking at the pictures of all of the nerds.

  8. I think the best part of the MMO pics is that one with the food in the picture. When I went to Blizzcon 08, there was no food (and trust me, I would’ve bought some, it was lllllllllloooooooooooonnnnnngggggg line. But I love the people’s expression, it’s like they’ve never seen a truckload of food and they’re just like “OMG FOOD, it does exist o_o”

  9. Viva le revolution!

truely a visonary while all others blog about waiting in line or what they will do you blog about not going

    i salute you

  10. I was somewhat tempted to shell out the AU$50 for the live feed, but with the panels etc starting at 3 am or so Saturday morning my time and having friends coming over on Saturday evening, it doesn’t seem worthwhile to pay for a stream I won’t have time to watch. I’ll settle for catching up on the fansites and talking to one of my guildies that paid for the feed.

  11. Hmm, if you’ve dated people like most of the people in that photo Mania, you must be pretty broad-minded ;)

(The one in pink and the one in yellow in particular…)

  12. Ah, Blizzcon is coming. Soon all our questions about worgens, golbins, new content, and if Mr. Hellscream will be new Ogrimmar leader will all be answered :D

  13. This atmosphere you aren’t breathing in is “lack of deoderant with a hint of air conditioning” haha. It was fun last year. Watching it online would probably give a similar effect though.

  14. That’s kinda what I was thinking, Nehvets. It’s not that I wouldn’t want to go, but I can just sit in the comfort of my own home and get more or less the same amount of information, and without having to elbow my way past….uh…..less hygenically inclined WoW players to get places.

  15. Well from what I just learned (in case anyone is curious) the Murloc pet “Gurky” is not Bind on Account (unlike the previous Blizzcon reward: Big Blizzard Bear). However upon redemption, each of your characters will receive a Gurky egg in the mail.

I do not know if that applies to all characters on all realms, or just all characters 1 realm.

  16. lol no i just think its cool u admit ur not going dsooo many say thaey do or did and im sure some of them didnt

not sure why i even thought to word it that way cleary a lack of sleep was a issue

  17. Aw man, I’m feeling awfully stupid now… I bought the online feed, but can’t seem to figure out where I can actually watch it. o.o Hopefully a way will emerge within a couple of hours.

  18. Saf:
Should be at the very same site you bought it at. When you go to the page, it should either ask you to login OR it’ll say “You are already signed in for the event” on the right side. The site should be the “blizzcon.rayv” one.

Also, if you download the High Quality program to view it in HQ, there should be an actual program on your computer called “BlizzconLive”. You can also double click that to go to the same site =)

  19. They’re updated it as the live feed gets closer, I see that they changed the link headers, and added more info like time of live feed, etc.

I’ll be watching it myself, and post here my opinions on related hunter stuff, checking out what your opinoins are too, inbetween events.

@Rikaku – Are you serious?! >.< Dang, I guess I can't mail the pet to other toons I created after, just like the 4th Anniversary Blizzard Bear vanity pet. That sucks. :-\

  20. @Rikaku – Are you serious?! >.< Dang, I guess I can't mail it to my other toons I created after, just like the 4th Anniversary Baby Blizzard Bear vanity pet. :-\

  21. @Rikaku – Are you serious?! Dang, I guess I won’t be able to mail that pet to other toons I create after, just like the 4th anniversary baby blizzard bear vanity pet.

  22. Wh33ls:
Sadly, I’m dead serious. I interrogated a Grunty owner on my realm and that’s what her investigations led up to. I’m sorely disappointed Grunty is not BoA, but I guess they wanted to keep the Murloc pets “rarish”.

  23. It would appear they started updating the Live Stream website after I posted my last post. An hour or so ago I noticed that the navigation bar on the top of the page changed into Watch – On Demand – Review etc., but the links didn’t start working until half an hour ago. Right now it’s just playing game trailers, but I can’t wait for the real deal to begin. <3

It's odd really, I'm excited about the con to start even though I'm not even going to be there personally – but it sure feels like I am.

  24. I am not going to this event, however I am still interested in what’s going to happen. I really want to know about the worgens and goblins more than anything else.

  25. The live feed is not working for me, it just continueously says “connecting…”

Hmm, kinda reminds me of trying to play WoW after a patch, lol.
