Cataclysm Leak: Goblins & Worgen

According to WoW Insider, we will soon be learning from Blizzard that the next expansion is called “Cataclysm” and that there are two new races: the Goblins for Horde and the Worgen for Alliance.

If this is true — and it seems quite possible to me that WoW Insider has some sort of insider connections (Heh! Insider connections! Get it?) — I am very excited.

First off, there’s the distinct possibility that the Worgen, at least, will have access to the Hunter class. It’s possible that Goblins can also be Hunters, although I suspect that as a kind of gnome-analogue they won’t be able to. But I can’t imagine Blizzard adding two classes and no new Hunter races.

And Worgen on the Alliance side will give me a second Alliance race that I really like. (I’m fond of draenei but dwarves and night elves just don’t do it for me as characters — even though I play all of them. I’ve often bemoaned the lack of human hunters.)

More exciting than that, however, is the promise of fresh new newbie zones. I adore newbie zones — the content, sure, but the pets .. the pets! Especially since so far Blizzard has used expansion newbie zones like Azuremyst and Eversong to introduce new pet families to tame.

I’m drooling just thinking about it. What new families might be introduced in a Worgen zone? Or a Goblin zone?

Of course it’s possible that both Goblins and Worgen might not have newbie zones proper: they might start out at level 55 or 65, or even start in an existing zone. And if that proves to be the case … well, I’ll be disappointed, but I’ll get through it. Either way I am certain that there will be plenty of cool new pets in the next expansion to console me.

  1. Um Palla you should do the quests yourself AND Wrath Gate, horde side, Syvanas gets shaken BADLY and I think it goes, sofar, as to make her trust Thrall and the horde more, I am betting it was the Dradlord varithmas or whatever the hell he was called, that was feeding her hatred, her bitterness, everything ‘tortured’ about her, to blind her from what he was doing, and what the betrayers were doing.

The other thing is she pretty much sings a lament about her past life, and she doesn’t destroy the charm, it’s just, of little value to her now. Nothing more but a lost life, bitter memories and bitter hatred.

Though I don’t think Sylvanas gives one crap for alliance- sorry.

    They keep ganking her.

  2. I would like to see them get rid of “eyes of the Beast” and do something similar. Make the hunter become his pet, and make the pet more powerful. Druids can become different animals, why can’t we become our pets. That would be worth spec 51 points inot BM to me. Eh, wishful thinking. That would take some work on Blizzard’s Part. And I woould like to see Goblins as neutral. they are pretty much Mercs and i can see them wrking for the faction that paid them the most gold.

  3. King Varian Wrynn would not let Worgen join the alliance for a second. That racist, arrogant prick would never be able to deal with a wolf-man on his side.

  4. Yet he can manage deal with blue Goat-men from a different dimension, Purple men with sharply pointed and elongated ears, and two midget factions just fine? He isn’t as racist as many make him out to be… He just simply can’t stand Orcs, via a bad experience with them in his past… trust me, if he could gain support to take the Horde, especially the Orcs, down, he will, even if it means accepting an Outcast group of people to aid him…

  5. Eh, I haven’t made it past seventy on my horde Shaman yet Ryai. I guess I need too, just….no desire lately.

  6. Myself, that’s how I’d like to see the Necromancer class implemented. More than one pet, making them weaker the more they allow. Lots of micro, but a very interesting class, for me. And of course make different sorts, maybe allow you to tailor the ‘party’ to your needs. A balanced party of pets for questing, or maybe you’ll go with all rogue or mage-like pets for quick kills. Giving them specialized tasks would definitely entail making them weaker as a whole, thus also allowing classes with strong AoE to steal the thunder, though. Pets with small, weak heals, pets with decent tanking abilities, pets with higher damage than the others.. It’s a matter of balance. I’m sure Blizzard could make it work…the question is would they want to?

Wrynn is indeed a racist, but a opportunist even more. His people love their Paladins, and the Draenei are racially disposed towards the Light. Plus the whole honourable and noble stuff the race keeps being sold to me as, by Blizz no less. Plus, they warred with at one time, and still harbour grudges against the Orcs, Wrynn’s de-facto race of choice to despise(Garrosh doesn’t help, like someone kindly pointed out above. >_<). Dwarves are old, old human allies. His people would never support breaking ties with them. Gnomes are a package deal with the dwarves. And besides, they're basically midgets in the first place, like ya said. There are midgets among humans as well.

"Oh, look a gnome! How quaint!" "Buzz off lady, I'm as human as you. Jes' born this way, thanks muchly." Verne Troyer comes to mind. -grin-

Night Elves aren't much different from the humans, either. Taller, more beautiful by standard, longer ears, and different hued skin. I'm sure the humans distrusted, feared, perhaps hated them at first, but mutual interests have lead to a lovely alliance. Not to mention the old, old alliance between Humans and High Elves, whom are descended from those very same violet-skinned chaps. Remember what Grom said when he first saw the Night Elves? "They look almost likes..Elves.. but they're too tall and dark of skin.."..though I'm sure my memory fails me at some detail.

  7. Yeh, but Jaina isn’t racist and Wrynn takes her opinion highly (if he can postpone attacking Thrall for Jaina, he can accept the Worgen (seeing as they’re not part of the Horde))

Dweezil: Druids are “at one with nature”, they mix with nature, and nature grants them the ability to turn into other creatures, hunters (in lore) kill and enslave creatures of nature so nature doesn’t grant them that ability.

  8. Sorry for another double post in the same page but, just a thought.
If there are posters in the barbershops of Goblins with different hair styles (CRAZY hairstyles), does that mean we get those hairstyles if we go the barbershop on a goblin?
Wonder what the Worgen ones will look like…

  9. Not only that, but Variann has plenty of reason for his hatred of Orcs. He has seen the underbelly of orc society, he has been forced to dance for their amusement. He is justifiably pissed and disgusted at the average orc. Thrall? Isn’t exactly your staple orc. Thrall really is a good guy, and he is trying to clean up the hordes act, but there are a lot of orcs within the horde who want a much more violent solution to….well, everything. There are some good orcs within the ranks, and there are some bad. But the majority of them are stuck in a weird half and half phase, half way between the old bad orc mentality, and half way to Thralls peaceful mentality.

Does Variann take it a little to far? Eh, maybe. But after the strange double betrayal at the Wrath gate, and the horde then ambushing the alliance WHILE THEY FOUGHT THE SCOURGE AT ICECROWN, he is more then a little leery of them, and for good reason.

  10. Goblin?

I rather see Horde get Nagas.. Since they also play a part in WoW lore

    Alli – Worgen
    Horde – Naga

I predict you’ll see about 80% more Worgen than Goblins if released. Nagas have more appeal

  11. Just cos you don’t like Goblins as a race? O.o
There’ll be plenty of people who’d like to reroll Goblin, they’re not that unpopular. Take Draenei for example, there are plenty of them, but murloc sounds more fun and seem more appealing for people instead of blue aliens. Not to mention Goblins will be new and people will be like “OH MAH GOD NOH WAI!” and want to roll them.

  12. I woould reroll a goblin just for the fact that thier voices make me laugh every time I hear them. Sounds like something from Monty Python. I woould rather reroll Goblin than Worgen.

Telepathic Indian : I admit to not being up on things with WoW lore, but in just about every other game I have ever played that had a huntwer in it, the hunter was also a decent healer. Yet, the only thing we can heal is our pet…and not very well. Hunters live in nature, and understand nature. They may not have the “{blessing” of nature, but they do have a very good understanding of nature, and should have more talents/skills to represent them having that knowlege. I am not saying they need to a Swiss Army Knife player like Pally’s or Druids, but I think that if technicality comes into play, hunters should also have some healing spells.

  13. Well, If they end up not being worgen and goblin, then I hope for ogre for horde, and some sort of wolvar or oracle creature for the alliance. But I still think it will be Worgen adn Goblin

  14. again @Ryai

‘There’s a difference between a tribe of trolls ousted off their home land and accepted into the horde, than MERCS, no offense, but while I see female goblins running around in booty bay, ratchet and all other goblin towns, i’ve YET to see a female goblin really working with the horde, this leaves me to believe that only a FEW goblins are still loyal to the horde, as it’s been said Goblins are neutral and they love profit. Profit is GOLD aka money to them, and being sided with only one people wouldn’t be really profitable to them.’

and again, I mention, that stormwind does have a history in not paying their debts, ala that guild that was lead by vancelf (spelling?) that was kick out of stormwind and becasme bandits.

And really if it was a small group of trolls that joined the horde, why not a small group of goblins? yeah, goblins are more generally mercs… but it doesn’t have to speak for the entire race, just to those who could have been ousted by the rest of their race. And there would still be these “goblin towns” that would still be netural, because the horde got the losers of the goblin race, not the vast numbers…

but even though I’ve said all this, I kinda hope that goblins and worgen start neutral, and in goblins case , start in Undermine, but before they leave, they have to take a quest to either save a zep (for the horde) or a boat (allies) and become hated by all in Undermine until later where they can farm rep to be welcomed back, and become welcomed into the saved alli or horde communities (learning their tougne and whatnot).

  15. Everybody keeps saying they want them to be, or bet they’ll be Neutral factions, or choose which faction you want. I very HIGHLY doubt this… the main reason for this is Blizzard is finally just starting to Diverse the factions from each other more, especially in terms of PvP, and if you went in a 5v5 with lets say 2 worgen and a goblin (plus you and a 5th person) and on the other team were 2 worgen and a goblin (plus the 4th and 5th players)??? it would be EXTREMELY hard to tell the difference until it was too late. Now, Imagine this on a MUCH large scale, such as Wintergrasp or WSG? See what I’m getting at?

  16. @Gimlion- He wasn’t there for the draenei or night elves, he was off on his fantastic adventures or whatever. Draenei have never been hostile to alliance, and i’ve got no idea why night elves are in there, but worgen have been terrorizing darkshire far too long for someone as racist as him to consider diplomacy. I think this is more wishful thinking than anything, playing a worgen would be awesome but they’re just not really player material, unless they do some major changes to the lore.

  17. Boarwood:
You have to remember though, it’s Blizzard’s game. You really think that they can’t come up with a way for Worgen to become playable? This, the company who killed off Onyxia only to bring her back in 3.2.2? The company who literally just had us kill an Aspect? The company who did shoehorn the draenei’s entrance with a SPACESHIP (they may have been an offshoot of Eredar, a previous race, but hello- spaceship!)?? And people can doubt that they can come up with a way for Worgen to become playable?

It’s Blizzard’s lore, and they’ll lore if they want to.

I’m with Gimlion, the entire idea that worgen and goblins start nuetral just sounds stupid to me. And I agree for the above reasons, 3.2. literally just ushered in the new era of looking different just based on factions. The idea that “my enemy is red, that’s how I tell they’re my enemy” is not a counter argument for it. There is no real basis for people to come to this conclusion of nuetral then “choose your faction” other than the premise that Goblins are nuetral currently.

I know I said Blizzard can lore this game how they want, and that currently still stands. People are looking at goblins way too straightforward. These guys were Hordebefore coming Mercenaries; but it’s known that if they wanted to jump back into the fray that they would re-join the Horde as the Horde follows their view of war more than the Alliance.

And if memory serves me right…. weren’t gnomes nuetral in the Warcraft games? I believe that they were a rival of goblins, yet no one thought of this nuetral “choose your faction” bit when they said “gnomes for the Alliance”.

The fact that most of these sites are reporting, and from what I’ve heard as well, that it was strictly “Worgen for the Alliance, Goblins for Horde” is probably true. That’s how it’s going to be. The faction change service is more of a balancing/make the game more fun for players-feature, not necessarily one to be tied into the upcoming expansion. I mean, I can pay to change my characters gender, obviously I’m not going to be able to change genders willy nilly in the expansion pack (yanno, unless I’m a tauren female who’s a druid, really, just why did they have to have cat-form nose rings too???).

I don’t think Blizzard is going to change “when” you choose your faction. Faction should be a consideration as you make your character, not after you’ve gained a couple levels. Faction is an important part of gameplay, and Blizzard is continuing to emphasize this, which why I personally think it’s crazy to think this nuetral “choose a faction” won’t happen.

And Varian: As I said before, this guy isn’t as bad as he looks. He’s not necessarily a complete Horde-hater (I mean have you seen him slam Tauren? Noooo~). He just has issues with Orcs due to a past relationship with them. And the Undead he doesn’t like (me neither) because of the whole Wrathgate thing. He’s not going to turn away an enemy of his enemies. If Jaina can convince him to not kill an Orc on sight, and if he can personally choose to hangout with a Blood elf (seriously, go view wowwiki about his companion Valeera Sanguinar!), not to mention to continue to accept former-Scourge (enemies of life itself!) as new DK’s of the Alliance…. I can easily forsee him accepting the new-expansion Worgen (since as we can tell by their images they’re not the same mount-chasing drooly beasts we see in Darkshire).

Varian’s crazy, but he’s not entirely stupid. Garrosh’s actions are what make him distrust the Orcs even more as it falls into the exact stereotype Varian is concerned about. Garrosh is (I’m assuming, I’m no Horde) probably annoyed at how peace-maker Thrall is trying to be with a puny human (this right here being another example of how they’re further emphasizing difference between Horde and Alliance with just the storyline). Varian accepted DK’s to fight Arthas and his other enemies, tell me why a Worgen won’t be able to do the same with the proper ambassador to represent them. XD

  18. I’m not just looking forward to the all-new pets, in this upcoming expansion, I’m looking forward to (I think is likely) their having the pet “families” get a 3rd, cool attack power.

  19. Actually no Rikaku, Garrosh is just a racist pig and he’s to caught up, well in his own hatred. No it’s not that he is annoyed with Thrall- he’s just a racist. He gets at SAURFANG. He GETS AT SAURFANG because SAURFANG WANTS TO TRY AND BE RATIONAL. And then he snarls and spits and has a spazz fit and I just facepalmed at his roid rage of the alliance encampments in the little model of the borean tundra they have set up before them.

Garrosh … basically also asked, why Saurfang regrets killing children. -children-.

… Garrosh is a cannon as off skelter as Arthas was, or worse and I am afraid- no really. He has a screwed/messed up dude in Aggram’s hammer or whatever I can not name places half the time and I am horde- Saurfang basically has to SNEAK you a quest because of the paranoid nit there. Then the other one on the zep is JUST AS BAD. All HAHAHA GO KILL ALLIANCE HAHAHAHAHA at you and I’m like D: on Ryai all what wghat is thisd what this is madness this is not horde what.

Thrall and Saurfang are the most epic characters ever :/ Garrosh … is just a stain.

And I would gladly stab him in the face repeatedly with my turny horde lance.

  20. No way.. People would only roll Goblin for kicks.. Getting ganked by a Goblin will be funny but very few will make it their main.. As far as Worgen. Seriously, the popularity will be like 8:1. Everyone an their mother would make it their main. The difference is like night an day. From PVPer all the way thru RPer, the popularity will be way lopsided. Goblins are a joke at best. Naga > Goblin

  21. I highly doubt that they will release Goblins as a Horde race for that will completely break neutral town in azeroth, kalimdor, AND northrend… doubtfull… as for the Worgen, thats possable.

  22. I would so run a Goblin as a main. Would it be for “kicks”. Sure! After all,i play the game as a way to have fun. I don;t take it serious ike so many other players do. So, if I can gank somebody and taunt them in a “Monty Python” type voice… that would be price less to me. I say, Bring on the Goblins!

  23. Except that it wouldn’t break the neutral factions. What most people don’t seem to understand is that the goblins aren’t technically a unified nation. They are broken up into several different factions. The one players have the most contact with are the Steamwheedle Cartel, but there are others floating around out there. It wouldn’t be unheard of to see them ally with the horde again for the right price.

  24. Honestly, I think Horde’s been a bit shorted with the new tourny mounts too. Horde now has *three* black hawkstriders, and alliance gained a unicorn. Honestly, I nearly cried..

    The blacks:

    Warstrider
The sunreaver- sure, it’s dusky black, but still.
The silvermoon hawkstrider. Black and purple. Yay.

Now..if they’d made the silvermoon one silver or gray…but they didn’t.

I’d be all for alliance getting Worgen, truthfully. At first I QQ’ed, but then I realized: I hate the other alliance races, which is why I roll horde. Humans Dwarves and gnomes are all too human-y. NE’s are either steriod user looking or vastly too bouncy. Dranei >_< The males are shapely blue things and the females look like they're bent over a table. Now, worgen. That would be a race I'd gladly roll :D

Also, I agree with Ryai. Garrosh badly needs stabbing in the face. He was emo in Nagrand, intolerable in Northrend. Why Thrall let him take charge is beyond me.

  25. Honestly, I think Horde’s been a bit shorted with the new tourny mounts too. Horde now has *three* black hawkstriders, and alliance gained a unicorn. Honestly, I nearly cried..

  26. I just had a bit of a thought concerning the expansion. Does that mean we’re only going to get two additional pet talent points for the 80-90 grind, since we only get one every four levels?

  27. So…Goblin Racial mounts: OGRE!

Whenever I see Goblins riding anything it’s always an Ogre! Bring on the Ogre mounts!

  28. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Blizz in the past killed rumors rather quickly if players guessed incorrectly about something in the next patch/expansion, but was ominously silent when certain players DID guess correctly, and it was only a matter of time before Blizz officially announced it?

Blizz has been rather silent about this supposed new Goblin/Worgen races…

  29. As far as I know, they’ve never had a policy of killing rumours early, unless those rumours were slanderous or detrimental to the company image. If anything, they’re probably glad of misinformation about upcoming races at this point, as it would make Blizzcon (or later) announcements more of a surprise.

As for people suggesting naga as a race. I would be very surprised if Blizzard introduced any race whose body shape really disrupted standard player object usage, such as mounts and, well, pants and boots. They got around the boots issue by giving draenei and tauren leg warmers, but it would be hard to adapt armour to naga without making it look absurd, and being a load more work than they’d want to put in. Adapting mounts would be even more complicated, and they intend for all races to have access to an equal number of mounts now.

  30. I would also play a goblin. though I hope they get rid of their silly pudge bellies. maybe buff the boys up a smidge? I’m sure plenty of people will play goblins as there are plenty of people playing Gnomes. More then Dwarves, more then Trolls.

I’m concerned about “balance” though. Dreanei are 10% of all players mostly because people use them to play Shaman on the Alliance sids (?). Will the numbers go down if/when Worgen can be Shamans?

But what about Goblins? Warrior, for sure. Rogue, yup. Mage, maybe. Hunters? does the Horde need more hunters? Priests and Paladins? that would make them more desirable however:

Goblins place their faith in themselves and in gold. They raise eyebrows at insubstantial concepts such as shamanism and the Holy Light, preferring gods they can see, weigh, and spend. -WoWWiki

Though maybe faith in gold is enough. Also: Bliz can do what they want.

  31. If Goblins were actually to come into it, I can’t see them as Priests or Paladins. Nor Hunters for that matter. I’d say they’d end up Warrior, Rogue, Warlock, Mage and Death Knight. Any race on Azeroth has the ability to be a Death Knight, as any race there could have been corrupted but Arthas

  32. They’ve already got the Naga model in the ChrRaces DBC file (same with Goblin) and the pants just tile along down the tail (doesn’t look that bad, tbh :) ) but the boots and mounts will be a problem.
I don’t see them implimenting ogre mounts but I sure hope they do :D imo, it’s more likely to be shredder mounts (the one without the window surrounding the driver are actually mountable)

  33. Naga, at least in this expac., could NOT be a race (this is from the standpoint that the next Expac. is for sure Cataclysm) because most likely, the main raid boss to fight in the end, will be Azshara, QUEEN of the NAGA… so they most definitely will NOT be playable if the next expac. is Cataclysm… In other news though, I Finally tamed a spirit beast =D, Gondria was just hanging out while i was heading to DTK from GD for badge runs… And even better is today is my birthday, so its like blizzard knew somehow and spawned him just for me… (highly unlikely, but it makes me feel loved by the BM gankers if i think about it this way) ;)

  34. Gimlion

Congrats on your Spirit Beast tame. As for Ashara being QUEEN of Naga… The Lich King is the KING and creater of Death Knights… and we can play them… although Naga seem unlikely as a playable race because…. they have no feets… how do they ride mounts??

  35. I refuse to get exited about this just yet as its only masks atm.
Though sins the worgen masks insent your standar old world worgen model it does leave people wondering.

But why does everyone think they might end up as new PLAYABLE races?
the Worgen could just be a planned new neutral faction for what we know. Like the Tuskar.
And for the goblin masks…why not make masks of em? We all know em so well from the moment we entered Booty bay, or if your horde, your low lvl zones and your citys.

But if they are indeed planned new races id be happy. Specially if Alliance gets Worgen. Also i feel giving horde the Goblins would make both side seem equal in race uhmm….Apparence?! one short race and one fuzzy race on both sides seem just fine and fair in my eyes.
And for the people saying stuff like: “the alliance are predjudicial fearmongers who assume if it looks like a freak, then it is a freak and can’t be trusted.”
if that indeed where true alliance would NOT have axepted the draenei, Dk`s and maybe not even the gnomes. So go hide that narrow minded view of yours under a rock.

Goblins..why not a horde race? they worked with em once and even today they seem to rather stick to the horde than Ally, i cant recall ever seeing a goblin walking about in SW,IF,DARN or Exodar, but i see em in every horde city.

Worgen. well they have had more to do with the alliance than horde so it would seem more likely for them to join the Alliance. And just cause something looks feral and mean dont mean it should be places on horde side….seriously people. That idea is so old and worn out by now.

personaly id also love to play as Gnoll or quilboar or even a Kolbold.

as for mounts and classes for goblins and Worgens i think it would go something like this maybe:
    Goblin: warrior, mage, warlock, rogue/priest.
Mount: something enginered as they are good with that stuff just like the gnomes. maybe a silly running tank….i dunno.

Worgen: mage, rogue, warlock, hunter, warrior?
Mount: Big Boars..well i just wanna see a huge boar mount, but it seem more fitting as a Gnoll mount than worgen.

Now if my giggling wish to see a playable Kobold id so love to see it on a huge rat =D

  36. I think that the Worgens should have large hyenas. Worgs are bulking wolves, why can’t there be bulking hyenas?

Also, Could it have been possible that we have mistaken the worgen mask for maybe the mask of a WOLVAR instead? Although that would question why the wolvar are being selected and the oracles get nothing…

  37. @ Rottingham.

That would be AWESOME. An entire expansion devoted to the war between wolvar and gorloc, and they’re the new playable races. :3

And semi-random, but isn’t anyone else drooling about an Ony brood whelpling pet? I know I am.

  38. Like i said earlier I think the worgren should have a reptilian or dragon
( wingless ) for a mount think it would bring a whole new mix in to the warm and fuzzy mounts of the alliance even though sabers are the most popular of the alliance side I have always been happy to get my ZG raptor mount and having almost all the sabers i can always enjoy the difference of having a raptor….

  39. if alliance get worgen and horde not i quit wow end of history, anyway the next generation of wow killers is about to arrive soo wel see…

  40. @Leozero: cry about it why don’t ya? :) who knows at this point. anyway it is all just fun speculation.

@Snowtiger: YES! a reptilian mount would be awesome for alliance side. however, i LOVE akyo’s suggestion for giant boars.

  41. Sooooo…..you’d quit because they introduced a really cool race….just not to your side? How does that make any sense? Why not just PLAY the other side?

I wonder if horses can be ‘worgenized’?

  42. I’m just hoping Worgen have a wolf-like mount. Maybe like some strange wolf hybrid. I’d hate it if we got boars. I never liked WoW’s boars D= If worgen had boars, I’d have to treat them like I do the draenei. Shun their mounts and rep up with another city. XD But I love Rottingham’s idea. Hyenas. That…that would be sweet.

Quit because a race isn’t on your faction O_o And what WoW killers are we talking about, Aion and FFXIV? I mean, wasn’t Conan, DoW, WAR and everything else called WoW killers? I’ll tell you what’ll end up being the WoW-killer, WoW itself.

  43. Ok, this is a major part of my dork-side… although I let it shine enough here anyways xD… For those who mentioned a Reptilian mount, why not try something like DnD 4.0′s Rage drake? those things are badass looking =D you should look em up ;)
