Hunter Talents Reset

Careful when you log in today. Hunter talents were apparently reset last night or this morning, along with the talents of the pet you happened to have with you.

This came as a bit of a surprise to me in my first fight of the day, when I realized that I was getting my butt kicked and I went to hit Bestial Wrath and Intimidation … and they weren’t there.

Oddly, I could only find confirmation of this on the EU Hunter forum, but since my talents on a US realm have been reset I assume it applies to everyone.

  1. I know the pet talent reset threw me off yesterday because it was only on my cunning pets. My ferocity ones were unchanged.

also worth a mention when I was QQing about eh Sacrifice change yesterday, I guess there are reports of the skill helping more against pallies, so perhaps that Stun 5k 5k 5k 5k bit won’t bite as much. Rogues and DKs on the other hand, it helps them, which is sad because melee fighters were the primary reason why used the talent. Also helps us against crit-heavy mages, yet they never gave me trouble in fights, yet some are saying that a Shaman’s Lava Burst may STILL crit through Sacrifice. Not sure how the mechanics work honestly as I don’t play them…

  2. i dunno if this is an old change or not but when i used my talent points in MM and then switched talent tree and talented my offspecc (BM) i also talented my pet and then i switched back to MM and then back to BM and my pet still had the talent points i gave it so i didnt have to do it again if this is an old change sorry for posting :)

  3. The talent reset may be due to a bug I encountered when I logged in last night: I still had my full 0/15/56 SV spec but I *also* had one unspent talent point that I was able to put into Improved Aspect of the Hawk.

The extra talent point went away when I switched to my secondary BM spec and then back to SV, but if it happened to other players as well then a full reset may have been the only realistic way for Blizz to fix it. (Unfortunately, I did this before I checked that the talent point in IAotH was actually effective, but I have no reason to believe it wasn’t a genuine extra talent point as a result of a bug)

Regarding pet talents not resetting when switching specs: I’ve found lately (i.e. prior to patch 3.2) that the only time the talents will consistently reset is if I have a non-exotic pet with me when I switch from BM to SV and that pet has more than 16 talent points spent. Pets in the stables, exotic pets and pets that aren’t using any of the bonus 4 pet talent points seem to be left alone. Since I generally only use my worm when I’m BM, and leave my wolf, cat and gorilla with only 16 talent points spent that means I don’t usually need to fix their talents after switching specs (I still check though, just to make sure).

  4. Same here, all talent points refunded. Wish they’d told me that before I spent the gold for a minor respec.

  5. Yep, I had my talents reset today too. What was funny though is that my reset didn’t take place right away..I logged in this morning no problem. I logged in again a few hours later and…Where are my talent points? Also, only my wolf and cat had their talent points refunded. Rhino, Corehound, and Dragonhawk are all fine.

  6. Yeah that wasn’t fun to log into this morning. None of my pets had their talents reset, including Raiju (Skoll) who was out with me during the reset =O Weird.

  7. They were reset last night for EU, it happened after an apparent rolling restart turned into maitanence. This does coincide with the fact that like with all changes in trees, hunter talents should have reset after the patch came in, but afaik ONLY deathknights did, so this was most likely a fix for that, and probably some other things.

The annoying thing is I spent 50ish-gold on Ryai to respecc her Deepeeess secondary specc.

I’ve been bashing my brains on how to keep the BM numbers from being over 51 too much. Closest I’ve gotten is think 53 :/

    Hate. Bloat.

  8. Saranette: Lava Burst can get an “automatic” crit from having flame shock running, so assuming +100% from that and -100% from RoS, that leaves their normal crit chance…

  9. The bug that caused the reset of having 71 talent points instead of 70 still exists for me after I logged in today and rebuild my specs.

  10. I found out – today – on Ysera when I was flying-around looking for the new spirit beast, and got DC’d, with a login message the world server was down.

Surfed the web a few minutes, and was then able to logon. Stopped at a stable master to bring my chimera out of the stable – and I got a message stating (approximate): “You are not qualified to use an exotic pet”

And I’m: “WTF? I was just using it earlier today…” :)

  11. For what its worth: When I was DC’d I had Aotoona out – and its talents were also reset.

When I pulled Nuramoc out of the stable, its talents were still set.

  12. I headed out to Storm Peaks this morning and noticed rather quickly that my damage was very low … I checked and my talents were gone … along with those of my cat. The other pets showed 16 talent points used and 15 left unused. Gahhhhhhh! This happened once before when duel specs were first available. I still have 71 points and used them all. Oh well!

  13. The bug I encountered involved having 72 talent points. 71 is the number of talent points we’re meant to have at level 80 since we get our first talent point at level 10 rather than level 11 (80-9 = 71).

@Ryai: Blizz typically only do free talent resets when the structure of the talent trees actually *changes* (e.g. DKs had talents move around, talents reduced from 5 points to 3 and new talents added). Just changing the effect of a talent (such as the Animal Handler and Cobra Reflexes changes in this patch) has never been enough for them to reset talents.

  14. In other news. PALLADIA FINALLY TAMED A !@#$ING SPIRIT BEAST!!!! …..I’ve been camping those things since BETA……but on Scarlet Crusade, there are always at least twenty hunters in Sholazar, and until Skoll came out, at least five to ten in Zul’Drak. Tonight, though, I happened to FINALLY stumble across Gondria.

  15. Yea i din’t realize it til after we were doing the trash to XT and the saw blades were kicking my ass =D

  16. Can’t complain about free respecs eh? Also, the devilsaur got some changes in the patch. They’re no longer stompy, they have a roar added to their idle animations, and the no longer grow when they stack Monstrous Bite. That should make them actually usable in raids because they won’t get gibbed anymore by AoE that kills them because of the stupidly large hit boxes the pet had.

  17. So great the one thing that made Devilsaur’s cool [and the hitbox thing was kinda sorta fixed imo :/] gets taken out completely. I could understand after they were first made tameable, as said in a CoT:OH run, it was just Devilsaur, Devilsaur everywhere as Aria said. I mean Cherry got as big as the freaking Epoch hunter if I remember right.

Then mean after the change which saved grace for me, my devilsaur pretty much stopped pulling the I CAN ATTACK FROM FIFTY YARDS AWAY.

So great. They made saur’s roar, but took away what made them unique among pets. /sigh.

  18. Nothing quite as funny as logging in, seeing a PVP opportunity and realizing only after you’ve engaged that your talent-specific skills have suddenly disappeared. I had a good laugh though because one hunter I know didn’t realize the missing skills until he had been on for two hours lol.

  19. I think the worst ‘log back in surprise’ I ever had was when I came back after I’d quit for a few months. My death knight had been flying around Icecrown when I’d logged out. Well I log into him….and proceed to fall fifty feet down into a group of undead. And my talents had been reset. And let me tell you, there is nothing a level 79 untalented death knigth with 2,000 some odd hit points can do against five undead.

  20. My double, good luck Kitairra! If your on a busy server were they are heavily camped for either taming purposes, or drop purposes, then it can be really, REALLY hard.

  21. aha ouch, Palla that’s as bad as the log out while dead and be ressurected some time later glitch. A lowbie shammy of mine had died in auburdine and I thought hell, I’m not gonna corpse run a lv 21 for the ally fire or whatever .. so log out as a ghost.

    Log back in.

    HELLO GUARDS. DEATH.

    And grats Palla/good luck Kit.

And yeah Palla, it can also be hard with hunters now going ‘Willing to pay 1k for Skoll information!!!’

I tried to explain to one hunter, like I have in the past concerning Loque, when I see it, that this just begets bullying/spamming and etc. Then I get attitude of ‘I never experienced bullying for Loque and Gondria!’ and I think good for you, and try to explain about OTHER hunters. Because if one guy is ready to waste 1k on Skoll …

the guy just got prissy and snapped a ‘gunna report u for harassment’ and I thought great.

All others I talked with UNDERSTOOD, you can potentially hurt OTHER hunters doing this. LIKE WITH GARWAL.

    AURG.

  22. Triple post :D

    Anyways.

‘and the no longer grow when they stack Monstrous Bite. ‘

Actually I can confirm no they still do- or it’s glitchy like everything else! I’m using Jareth, my red/bronze saur on hrogthar’s landing, and of not really taking notice as it was said monsterous bite doesn’t make saur’s grow bigger. Well after I killed another Kvaldir [or mist mobs/men as I call them], I noticed, Jareth was bigger than Ryai. I went O_o and thought, did they increase the size to compensate for the lack of growth?

    THEN JARETH SHRANK.

So evidently either THAT is a new bug OR they fixed the ‘hit box issue’ finally.

  23. Ryai:
You know, I was noticing my friends Devilsaur (Ironhide Devilsaur to be exact) when I said that it looked much larger than normal w/o being in combat. I thought it was just me, but I’m 95% sure that Devilsaur was larger than I first remember it. So devilsaurs don’t grow anymore? O_o

Also, I hate that roaring personally. It’s so…annoying imo. Makes me kinda glad I’m the only BM in guild, otherwise my GL would be using his to annoy me all night. XD

  24. I’ve gotta tell you, spirit strike needs a bit of work. I’d say that’s the price you pay for a ranged attack on a pet, but my serpents poison spit hits for over the same length of time, AND has a casting slow. The only real positive to it is that it works with prowl to boost the damage. And it’s arcane damage.

I love my devilsaur. Something about the stomping, roaring, eating things mentality just amuses me greatly. Not to mention I’ve been saying “I WANT ONE OF THOSE!!!” since the first time one of them ate me back in 05.

  25. And a double, because it crossed my mind. After doing some intensive PvPing over the past few days, I can confirm that melee specs and classes are pretty heavily out doing ranged classes. Priests are kind doing better then most, and moonkins, but that isn’t saying much. At this point I can confidently say that a melee with all of their cooldowns will reliably beat a ranged with all of their cooldowns. Minus cooldowns, its the same. In many cases, a melee with all their cooldowns used can STILL beat an equally or even better geared ranged class. Often with multiple people beating on his or her face.

  26. No Rikaku, they still grow, but it seems it takes a full stack to be noticable anymore. And I don’t think they are bigger out of combat- Jareth is still small compared to Ryai.

I notice these things. Ryai is a tauren. And as such I am plauged with, unless I absolutely adore the pet IT IS ALWAYS TO SMALL D:

    Even corehounds :(

But I dunno- I’ve seen the size petbugs happening again, saw a hunter with STD cat and it was larger than normal. I scrolled over and saw why, it was ‘Gondria’ with a silver portrait round her.

  27. Aaaah the good ol bugs of patches. Tho not getting that with my pets, just the normal OMG BIG PETS or well, as mentioned the Gondria.

Oh I’m not sure if I mentioned this but THE COWER BUG SEEMS TO BE PSYCHOTIC NOW :D

Even if it’s on the pet bar, it turns on when you stable a pet, zone, mount or hearth. I only realize to late when my devilsaur, wasp or SB decide to use that erf call of the wild? I never have it on auto, I always leave it on manual for ‘boss fights’

How hard is it to fix this bug, really :/

  28. @ Ryai

Really? I have cower on my action bar and it hasn’t bugged out in almost 3 months.
    On any of my pets.

    @ Palla

Medium population here on Exodar…and haven’t seen Logue(in person) alive or dead ever. Same for Gondria and Aotoona. And since 3.2 launched,I haven’t gone near Storm Peaks to look for Skoll…as someone said, every hunter and their mother will be there.

And,quite frankly,I’ve NEVER asked “1000k for Logue”…and never will. Part of being a hunter is the hunt and tame. Much more satisfying doing it yourself, imo .
    ( Well,lets see how how I feel in 6 months if I don’t have ANY Spirit Beasts..lol)

    Kitairra

  29. Kitairra: No not cower- it’s other skills, including Call of the wild. It seems ALL skills turn on- save for Cower.

Unless I guess if you have Cower off the action bar, dunno :/

But I don’t need call of the wild for pve that’s why I’ve got it turned off- and if I do need it in a pve situation I have it on manual.

Oh reminds me it seems manually clicking Bad Attitude still doesn’t work in combat [aka when pet is throwing out spam attacks], clicked it a dozen times in a chillmaw run [he jumped me and just it was a 'bad' run] and didn’t go off untill I hit auto.

  30. … am i the only one who notices a diffrent function of the pet bar in regards to attack follow stay… b4 u could set it to follow or stay and click attack wich worked awsome for my macro to send him in n pul him out…. but now u can set it to attack aswell wich seems to have him attack something n just stay were he is once its dead wich is not so cool when ur trying to pull ur pet back on a boss aoe

  31. /cast [nopet] Call Pet;[target=pet,dead]Revive Pet
    /clearfocus [target=focus,dead]
    /focus [target=focus,exists]player;target
    /clearfocus [target=focus,noharm]
    /petattack [target=focus,exists]
    /petfollow [target=focus,noexists]
    /cast Hunter’s Mark

is the macro but now it works retarded lol probly the only reason i noticed it

seems like the only way i can controll were he goes n retreats is if i click now :(

  32. o also whats the deal with low level turtles n shell shield since when did pet faimly skills be level required? mainly i think anything 19 and under for turtles

  33. Well, I haven’t had any awful log in experiences, but when the world server DC occured, I was in Sholazar, fighting the guardians on Maker’s Perch, and I got DCed. My only thought: “I am SO going to long on dead.” (I had two)

So, after resetting my hunter’s talents, I log on, only to find some rollback has occured. I had one on me, and I had nearly full health. I was very happy.

  34. Aurg ragle fragle I forgot the psychotic cowerbug problems and we took on chillmaw. HELLO COWER GOODBYE GROWL. Anyways somehow we managed to survive, so we were recovering/resting, and well this is about the report of pet’s staying in ‘ATTACK’ and NOT Follow even tho they stay following you.

Erebus, my Hydralisk, was on ‘ATTACK’ and ‘DEFENSIVE’, Aria went to heal a drood who afked to close to chillmaw, and all a sudden, right after she heals, Erebus does his HYDRA ROAR and I’m like wtf? cause I had tabbed out, come back and Erebus is all EATINGFACEEATFACWEATFACE and I NEVER told him to attack, I didn’t even know WHAT had happened untill after the dust had settled after we downed Chillmaw a SECOND time.

She said she had healed the druid, and all a sudden Erebus charged Chillmaw.

So yeah, guys be careful if you’re grouped and your pet is on ‘attack’ not follow.

  35. Anyone else notice that they gave our Devilsaurs a voice now? He actually roars when making the roar motion. Also, anyone else having issues with their pets refusing to attack certain things? I had this happen against XT the other night. For whatever reason, Grim always refused to attack the heart. Ended up wasting a couple of BW’s that way. He was fine once the heart retracted, so I’m not sure what the deal is.

  36. I’ve had that happen too, Gelannerai, sometimes I have to hit attack multiple times. And my pets won’t attack targets past a certain distance anymore, either. Used to, if I could see it my pet would attack it. Now? If it’s beyond a hundred or a hundred and fifty yards or so it won’t.

Devilsaurs lost their stomping noise, though. Mine still grows as per the usual, and a three-monstrous bite Devilsaur in beastial wrath is a sight to behold.
