Pet … Worgen?! [Updated]

Spiritbinder with Worgen[Update] Because this topic is getting so much attention, I’ve re-organized the post slightly to highlight what we know and hopefully answer some questions before they need to be asked.

The facts as we know them:

  • When hunters tame the wolf/worgen Garwal, he normally reverts to wolf form. However, if you tame him at just the right time, he gets ‘stuck’ in worgen form and you can have a worgen pet.
  • In order to see Garwal, you must be on the quest to kill him (called Alpha Worg). This quest is available to both Horde and Alliance but has a different chain of prerequistes — check Wowhead for details.
  • If you have already completed the Alpha Worg quest, I’m afraid that you are out of luck. At this point we do not know any way for hunters who have completed the quest to tame Garwal. And GMs are unable to reset individually quests for characters.
  • There is a guide below on how to hit that “just the right time”, but be aware that the specifics of percentages and times will depend on your level and how much damage you do, and you will probably have to make several trial runs to get everything to work out.
  • The worgen pet shows as a wolf in the character selection screen and the stables, even when he is still safely in worgen form in the game.
  • He will revert back to wolf form permanently if you enter an Arena with him. Entering an Arena with another pet while the worgen is in the stable is safe, however.
  • So far, every other action we know about — battlegrounds, raids, instances, leveling, auto-leveling on tame, dying, resurrecting, stabling, logging out, dismissing, mounting, dueling — is safe for your worgen and will NOT cause him to revert to wolf form.
  • At this point, Blizzard has not made any statement of their intentions about this pet. It’s likely that hunters are not intended to run around with a humanoid pet like a worgen, but whether Blizzard will make Garwal untameable, or revert all worgen pets to wolf form, or leave existing worgen alone, or even ban the lot of us — we just don’t know. Please remember that before you get too attached to your new worgen.

There is a ton of good info in the comments below, and our understanding of this situation is increasing as more hunters spend time with this pet. For that reason, you may want to start at the bottom of the comment thread and browse up it to get the latest news. There is also an RSS feed for the comments on this post available.

And now, back to the original post. [/Update]

My home internet went out many hours ago and it’s just come back — just in time for me to be inundated with e-mails and comments about the rumored tameable worgen that’s been seen on the Darkspear (US) realm.

We first heard about this yesterday in a comment from Ranshiin, but it’s been blowing up since then — with lots of readers here, on our forum, and elsewhere trying to figure out how this may have happened.

Tonight there was apparently a breakthrough. As you can see from this pic I borrowed from Spiritbinder’s post on the Arcania forums, we now have a more-or-less repeatable method to tame the worgen.

The worgen in question is Garwal, a quest-beast who transforms between worg and worgen forms while you fight him. Hunters learned early on that when you tame Garwal, he reverts to worg form and stays that way … unless, apparently, you manage to tame him just as he transforms — in which case he gets ‘stuck’ in worgen form.

There are guides popping up with a better description of how to pull this off. The first I saw was courtesy of Icemaz:

  1. Get Wyvern Sting. It does about 19% damage by itself over 6 secs, and sleeps for 30.
  2. Find him.
  3. Hurt him until he is approx 67-69% health.
  4. Wyvern sting him.
  5. Wait till there is 14 secs left on Wyvern sting.
  6. At 14 secs left, cast tame beast.
  7. If done right, right as your tame ends, he will have just transformed.

From what I am reading, you may need to adjust the timing depending on how powerful your Wyvern Sting is.

[edit] Also, be aware that — as Lathun/Xethik tells us in the comments — entering an Arena will reset your worgen to his worlf form. [/edit]

Unfortunately, Garwal can only be tamed while you are on his quest. And unfortunately for me, I finished this quest long ago so I haven’t been able to try it out myself. (At least not with Mania. Garwal is level 71, so it is theoretically possible that I can get Kaet up there soon to do this chain and grab this handsome fellow.)

But … this also seems like the sort of thing that Blizzard may move quickly to fix — or fix retroactively. After all, we’re really not intended to tame humanoids. A ghost wolf is one thing … a werewolf who wear armor another. So until we hear official word, I’d be careful about getting too attached to your sexy new worgen.

But you have to admit … he really is a very handsome fellow!

(My sincere thanks to everyone who e-mailed and tried to keep my updated. I’m just sorry that my net was out for so many hours while all this was shaping up.)

In my case, I couldn’t tame him before the server shutdown, because I found out about him 1 hour before shutdown.I was on my main level 80 Warrior, and my hunter is 73, so I was doing a quick BG, I always do before I log out, and saw the pet in the battleground. I would’ve never found out about if I didn’t see it on that BG, because I don’t hang out on forums and look things up. Anyways I knew he was going to get fixed with this restart or not, so the regular time for the server to come up for me is 2pm eastern time (US) but I tried to log in at 1pm, and the server was back up,so I logged out at the tame location, and I went for the tame right away, it took me 3 times, and I tamed him, played with him a little and named him. I left to Iron Forge and stable him and took him out, just to see what would happen, gave him his talents and took him on a BG game just to test him out in battle, I was in the BG for maybe 10 minutes and when I died and came back his talents where gone, and REAL BIG on log in screen, has a wolf, lol. He does have 9K HEALTH at level 71, since I’m 73, I guess the 5k health is from level 80 Hunters who have him at level 75? Anyways now his useless, maybe they will fix the talents if we bitch at Blizzard and make them feel the wrath, anyways this guy will be history when the new spirit beast (SKOLL) comes out in patch 3.2 >>http://huntsmanslodge.com/2625/skoll.htm

O CMON BLIZZ I JUST GOT IT TODAY TOO. GUESS IM A LUCKY ONE TO GET IT JUST AS IT BECOMES UNTAMABLE. I WAS ABLE TO TALLENT IT THEN OUTTA THE BLUE IT DISAPEARS(TALLENTS) LAME AZ SHIT IS WHAT I SAY. BUT EITHER WAY ITS A KOOL PET MAN. I TAMED HIM ON MY 72 HUNTER ANY NEWS OR IDEAS THAT IF I STABLE HIM AND LVL TO 80 IF I REMOVE HIM FROM STABLES WILL HE REVERT TO WOLF?

  3. Silvertracks

I thought mine glitched or something, so I released him to try taming him again. Of course, I couldn’t perform the tame. Had a great cool looking awesome pet for 20 minutes or so. Shouldn’t have abandoned him in case Blizz changes their minds.

  4. megapull

    i dont get it

A pet has a skin, and a pet has abilities with talents

Which one of these was OP to the worgen? The skin

Which ones they remove? Abilities and talents.

    WTH

  5. Ninwe

Update – This is now hotfixed on US servers and Garwal is now untamable

Confirmed, I couldn’t tame it a few minutes ago :@

  6. Valadria

Actually they are still debating whether to revert him to a wolf or not, even the people that have it are not safe atm and if history is any evidence say good bye to your Worgen in the future.

Mailed webmaster-en@blizzard.com in despair. 853 comments in this post now…TAKE A F*CKING HINT! The arrogance of it! Telling users what they want and what they don’t.. We pay you blizzard! YOU ANSWER TO US! If enough people show an interest you may want to foster and build on that, not slap them in the face because your legit in game additions are dull as dish water and don’t warrant the same level of interest..

  8. Natty

Ghost Wolf, Hydra, Squishy Green Blobs…those got to be kept!! The only difference here is that this one is cross-species. Really all it would take is for them to put somewhere in the quest log that maybe Garwal is particularly closer to his animal side than to his human side. Deem him mostly beast.

  9. Beastycruz

I have this pet, and i leveled him mto 80 right when i got him. When i logged off the next night, i woke up to find him unable to use any talent points, or any petlike abilities like bite, ect. any others have this problem or is it just me?

    Beastycruz 80 hunter
    Nazjatar

  10. Riyan

    Yep, it’s completely broken now.

No longer tameable and absolutely worthless other than eye candy so far.

The fact it has no abilities except for standing there makes it a bad sign.

It may be gone by the time next week.

So hang on to it while you can, screen shot away. It may be gone soon.

  11. megapull

i dont get it. REVERT IT IN NORMAL FORM OR LEAVE IT but dont do this 2 in 1 shitmode. “duuhh give the skin but no abilities.” rather “give skin AND abilities” OR “take away skin but leave abilities”

  12. Mako

Well, ive the same problem, mine has no abilities nor talent points, so i stabled him n went back to Howling Fjord to try to tame him again…guess what, “Creature not tameable”…

  13. Petocity

I can’t feed mine. He will soon Die. Blizzard is *&*^ hole for doing this. They should clean up their act. We are paying customers and they should realize that because of us they are in Business. More of this and they too will fail and file for BK protection. We decide if they have staying power.

  14. itzzmlgkaiser

everyone here should start a pettiton(sp?) or something and tell them we want our worgen to have ablitys, tallents, and act like regular pets! its not fair that people have ghost wolfs and hydras and we cant even have this.

  15. Ronero

I tamed this guy last night, and when I logged in this morning i couldn’t access my pet’s talents or abilities pages… the tabs for both just weren’t showing up.. anyone else have this problem?

  16. Krippe

Can you still tame it? I’ve tried 20 times, and half of them it transformed when it was on it’s way back to me…on time that is. But still a damn wolf after it. :(

  17. Ronero

aha, just read everyone’s comments… seems i was lucky to get this guy ;D even if he is unable to use abilities i’m still keeping him just for hanging around org… although i’d love for him to actually be useful :(

  18. Mania Post author

I understand that people are upset about the situation, but please remember to be civil and respectful to each other (even if you can’t manage that towards Blizzard right now). :> And do please be mindful of your language.

US blue post before post delete:

We have plans in the upcoming major content patch to remove the ability for players to tame Garwal in his worgan form. We will not however, revert Garwal to his innate form for players who have already gone through the trouble to tame the creature/ humanoid. In addition, we will be fixing the bug that currently demorphs Garwal when he enters arena.

hope they give him abilites coz who wanna take a pet iwth 5k hp to arena

  20. megapull

I read it on some EU forums, when it was actually deleted.
    OR (crying)
its fake since theres a typo in it (worgan)

  21. mortalcombat

I agree with the above posters.
Give us the ability to talent/use pet abilities with Worgen skin or with the reverted normal wolf skin.

Having a pet with no talent option or resonable combat use is a waste of a pet slot.
might as well convert him to a non-combat vanity pet.

  22. Ferluci

aha, just read everyone’s comments… seems i was lucky to get this guy ;D even if he is unable to use abilities i’m still keeping him just for hanging around org… although i’d love for him to actually be useful :(

i got the same problem, i hope somebody know wat to do.

  23. sodaz

ok i just got mine like 4 hours ago he had all his talents and everything then i log on 2 hours later and now he have no talents moves the only way 2 make him happy is to mend him with the glyph

ok i now lots of you r mad and so am i but i think since he is now untamable when they were fixing that they srewed up and broke the tamed ones too ive heard that blizz will let any1 who has one keep him and fix the arena glitch but wont make him tameable and if they fixing that glitch i suppose they gunna fix this one too

  24. megapull

    if they gonna fix it.

    the only question is: WHEN?

3.2 is too big patch for such little part of the game to be fixed.

    WTB instanthotfix :)

and WTB blue info for god’s sake

  25. Bullèr

AHHHH!!! My Worgen is broken. Damnit!!! Yep, they screwed up the tamed ones. No feeding, abilities or talents.

  26. Impaled

    well I must admit that hearing about this possibility got me enthousiastic as hell;

    -searching for several fora

-searching sveral text explains and watching movies.

-traveling back to ogrimar several times to respec, get back and level up wyv sting, getting bugged with hs cooldown to get back to NR as fast as possible

    -continuing chainQ

-seeing other hunters come along and try

    -fighting other hunters

eventualy see hunters help eachother taming this pet, alliance & horde

-seeing the hunter I “helped” finally getting it after several tries (awesome moment and being happy for that other dude kicked ass)

-finally getting it myself with fingers crossed and biting my tongue rofl.

so hell yeah the whole experience was awesome to me and really gave me a cool awesome feeling again.

let’s hope Blizz will choose for the best option in the end.
whatever the outcome will be, I do not agree with the other “bugged pets” then need to be nerfed as well I will be “sad” if the Worgen adventure ends but I will be happy for other people whom got some odd pets.

but seriously guys & girls?; you have got to admit that the whole undertaking of taming the Worgen was exciting as hell:)

  27. megapull

The only thing what would stop the endless crying (what has true causes) Would be a blue post.

    Yea. A [i]blue[/i] one.

Can you hear me out there? I hope you can :)

    And i wait.

  28. gammaraze

we should know by next tuesday’s maintenance whether or not blizzard will give our worgens to us in full capacity. otherwise, they could do something a little cooler, not give us abilities, but give us 6 slots, all of which the worgen is currently wearing :P

@mania, a little off topic, but are you aware that petopia is down? it comes up with a powweb banner and says “This site has been suspended”… where else will i find a one stop shop for all that is wow pets?? /cry

  29. Bullèr

Impaled – That is the exact same thing I went through…except for the Ogrimar part, ugh. I was up ’till 4 in the morning helping both Alliance and Horde hunters tame him. I finally went to bed and when I woke up the next morning got him on my first try. It was like Christmas morning!

  30. Bullèr

I was DC’d after entering a BG and upon logging back in saw that my pet worgen, which shows up as a wolf on the login screen, was taking up the whole screen. Anyone else see this?

  31. Ryô

I agree with Impaled, nice moment and help from both sides (rather uncommon, class before race), and so happy when I finally catch it on a last try some time before the fix :-)

and Glyph of Mend Pet still makes him happy again ;) yes

  32. sodaz

oh ya buller when i first found my worgen was bugged i reloged and the wolf thats normaly there was 8 times bigger then my hunter (this would b ok if i was a gnome but no my hunter is A GIANT 15FOOT TALL TAUREN)

  33. Natty

I have a 72 BM spec (despite the Surv and MM specs being better) hunter and I noticed something quite odd. The pet doesn’t give you a pet tab in your spell book, indicating you don’t have a hunter pet but it appears in your Character screen. So this is working something like the whistle from Scarlet Monestary. If that’s true you’d be able to tame pets having the worgen out still. But one thing leads me to believe this was a rushed accident. My Worgen does NOT have my Kindred Spirits buff, which makes sense if he’s not being counted as a pet. Despite this, I still have Spirit Bond…WHICH VERY CLEARLY STATES IT ONLY WORKS WHEN YOUR PET IS SUMMONED. So which is it? Is he a pet or not? If he’s not let us have a second, actual pet out (possibly turn this into a Feat of Strength). If he is a pet, give him skills and a talent tree. Make sense?

  34. Velcro

At everyone complaining about missing spellbook of the pet, and about the login screen size: That is since they hotfixed it! It was working perfectly fine before, but they made him untameable

  35. Natty

Mania, I enjoy the ability I have to post freely and even after this worgen ordeal I will probably be a reoccuring visitor BUT…can you maybe do something to move maybe half the posts elsewhere or something? It’s taking FOREVER to load all 900 posts lol…
