PTR 3.2 Initial Patch Notes

The initial patch notes for Patch 3.2 as it is about to debut on the Public Test Realms have been posted!

I’m about to run out the door right now to a doctor’s appointment, but here’s a quick grab of the hunter-y stuff.

Classes – General

  • All pets now receive 40% of their master’s resilience and 100% of their master’s spell penetration. In addition, if a player is at their appropriate spell hit chance or hit chance maximum, their pet will be at the maximum for spell hit chance, hit chance, and expertise. If they are below the maximum, their pet will be proportionately below those maximums.

Hunters

  • Aspect of the Cheetah: Can now be learned at level 16.
  • Deterrence now has a new visual spell effect.
  • The time that traps will exist in the world after being put down has been reduced to 30 seconds, down from 1 minute.
  • Traps now have separate 30-second cooldown categories: Fire (Immolation Trap, Explosive Trap and Black Arrow), Frost (Freezing Trap, Frost Trap) and Nature (Snake Trap). A hunter can have one trap of each category placed at one time.
  • Talents – Beast Mastery
    • Catlike Reflexes now also reduces the cooldown of your Kill Command ability by 10/20/30 seconds.
  • Talents – Survival
    • Entrapment: This talent no longer works with Immolation Trap or Explosive Trap.
    • Lock and Load: Now has a 22-second cooldown. The Lock and Load effect cannot be obtained on targets immune to snare effects when Frost Trap is used.
  • Pets
    • Roar of Sacrifice: Redesigned. This ability can now be used on any friendly target to make that target immune to critical strikes, but the hunter pet takes 20% of all damage taken by that friendly target. Cooldown increased to 2 minutes.

Bug Fixes – Hunter

  • All ranks of Sonic Blast now properly have an 80 Focus cost.
  • Black Arrow Ranks 5 and 6 training costs have been lowered significantly.
  • Lock and Load: The tooltip for this talent has been updated to indicate that it also works with Explosive Trap.
  • The tooltip for Improved Tracking has been slightly re-written to indicate that it only works on the hunter, and works on melee damage as well.
  • T.N.T. (Rank 3): Now indicates that the talent works with Black Arrow.

And there’s lots more non-hunter excitement as well. I can’t begin to analyze this right now, but I’ll be very excited to see what you think when I get back from the doctor. (Thanks to M. Bearpants for e-mailing me right away so I didn’t miss this.)

[addendum] And here are three of my favorite tiny changes for this patch:

  • Quest creatures and objects will now show on the player’s world map.
  • The quest log is now double-paned for more easily viewing quest information.
  • Vendor prices will now be listed on items whether or not players are at a vendor.

  1. The trap thing is interesting, though I don’t think it’ll fix our problems. It will help though, being able to slow, DoT, and snake some one all at the same time. *Laughs* Still, the thirty second duration make’s it kind of situational. Still and all, a change for the better. Not to mention we’re getting resilience and spell penetration for pets.

  2. One thing I’ll be curious about is whether disabling player experience will also disable pet experience. I used to play my old hunter in a duo with my wife, and there wasn’t very much I could do about it when our characters started outleveling my pet (who was the party tank), without also outpacing my wife’s character. I would have gladly paid 10G to lock my hunter’s level for long enough to let the pet catch up to our level.

  3. *The time that traps will exist in the world after being put down has been reduced to 30 seconds, down from 1 minute.*

i dont really like that but the seperate CD is very sweet.

i dident find more to say about this XD

  4. I found it mildly amusing that Freezing Arrow didn’t even rate a mention in the patch note about trap cooldowns ;)

The note about sonic blast seems wrong though – Sonic Blast is a long CD pet ability, so it is meant to have a zero focus cost. May just be a typo in the note (i.e. the ’8′ shouldn’t be there).

  5. They’ve found a way to separate the “twinks” from the “mundanes” in Battlegrounds :)

Players who do not wish to gain experience through PvP can visit Behsten in Stormwind or Slahtz in Orgrimmar – both located near the Battlemasters in either city – and turn off all experience accumulation for the cost of 10 gold.

Players with experience gains turned off who compete in Battlegrounds will face off only against other players with experience gains turned off.

  6. Yeah, I’m worried about the Sonic Blast note.

And I’m looking forward to the ability to turn off XP gain. This will make it much easier for me to maintain a variety of mid-level character (10, 20, 30, and so on) for testing. Right now the level 10 is especially annoying since I have to pre-explore everywhere he might want to go before he does the XP-rich pat quests, or he ends up at 11.

  7. Why .. did they nerf Roar of Sacrifice again? It’s not crit damage I take when Ere and me tank ZG or MGT, it’s damage …

This is even more useless ._.

  8. so does this mean ill be able to see how much greys will sell for without being at a vendor?if so.SWEET! iv been waiting for something like that to be added…

  9. looks like a couple more addons I wont need now (the double wide quest log and vender amount on tooltips)

The Emblem changes are complete bull from a raiders perspective though..I’m beginning to feel like Ive been wasting all that time in Ulduar saving badges up for tier pieces. *sad panda*

  10. Well, if the trap exists for 30 sec, and the trap has a 30sec cooldown… that’s -really- an improvement, since right now, the cooldown is longer than the existence duration of the trap. (Unless you had good old Beast Lord armor; I kept two pieces of that well into Srs Raidng in case I needed the 2-piece bonus). It means you have to keep dropping one, but eeh… that shouldn’t be a huge deal unless you have a really poky tank.

  11. You know, I think it’s stupid that only Spell Pen. and Resilence is being added to our pets from us. I mean, honestly, spell pen? Oh yes, because so many of us have spell pen… of course this could be for other classes, but as a Hunter that means I just get resilence. Yaaay pvp =_=

But I would like to point out that GC has stated something that makes me think Hunters will see more. Mainly because he said that there’s something wrong with the hunter pet system when AP is chosen strictly because it helps the pet more.

Lets see what changes 3.2 goes through this time ;)

  12. Spell pen… don’t forget, Warlocks have pets too. I really hope they’ll let the pets scale with crit and haste as well, though. Armor Pen would be nice, too, considering how much of it gets strewn around on itemization…

  13. Indy:
    (dig the name btw, =D)
Oh I know. I’m just sayin, they obviously didn’t intend that for Hunters unless I missed a Hunter-memo of great importance. Armor Pen & haste would be sweet.

    RedneckHunter:
I don’t think it’s a waste at all. There’s only so much you can really get with the Emblems without stepping foot into Ulduar. That said, it’s not like you’re going to get top of the line weapons or rings without stepping into the current top raid instance.

This really just helps getting some people to experience most of the content that Blizz spent so much time on. This shouldn’t be news to any raider as Blizz has said over and over again they’re not going to repeat the mistake of only allowing the top elite only see the endgame raids after spending so much time on it.

  14. Good luck with your doctor’s appointment. Anyways I’m glad pets will be that much more hard to kill. I wish they’d up their Health. I hate how they made it last only 30 seconds now. But I love the fact that we’ll FINALLY be able to have like 3 Traps up at once. I’m glad they improved Roar of Sacrifice. But I don’t like the long cooldown of it.

  15. Zhanael – HELLS YEAH! …i almost fell of my freakin chair when i first saw it yesterday… i’ve been waiting for them to do this for four years, so so happy :) also, if you’ve not seen… baby raptor mini-pets apparently! :O zomg etc!

  16. Actually, the XP-block is hardly going to kill twinking. In point of fact, it’s going to make twinking FAR EASIER since anyone wishing to twink can now simply level to the level needed without worrying about accidentally going over the cap, turn off their xp, and then continue to do whatever they need to do to get their twink gear at their leisure. I know some twinks and they’re all super happy about this change.

  17. Nachtwulf:
I’m ok with that change though, because at least the XP Blocked twinks can only fight other XP bloxked twinks. So that makes the casual pvp’r have a little more of a chance in the world lol

    Gutler:
OMG how did I miss that? lmao

  18. I’m psyched about the ravasaur mounts.

But mainly I’m extremely happy about the twink separation. I’m all for people working hard and utilizing connections to get excessively good gear for their lvl, however making PvP unfair for average players wasn’t sensible.

(on a side note, the new Druid models are making me consider swapping my druids off spec to feral instead of balance)

  19. The feral nerf is hardly “big”. They’re taking a bit off the base damage of some abilities, but leaving the scaling as it is. So the better your gear gets, the less you will feel the nerf.

Pretty much opposite to how the Steady Shot nerf was done. Looks like the devs learned a few lessons from that episode.

Yes, I’m still annoyed that BM hasn’t been fixed yet. I do like MM, but I wish I could go BM for a few fights without cringing at the loss of damage.

  20. The Roar of Sac redesign kinda makes me sad. I remember they didn’t like hunter teams in raiding showering the tank or healers with the mitigation, and apparently it was buggy (could someone confirm?) I’m wondering if the cooldown change was due to it being given to Cunning for pvp, or for Raiding. Either way, one aspect influencing the other aspect of play it seems. Kinda sad as I rely on it very much.

I also do like to lay frost traps and mount up to new objectives in pvp, so the 30 second change is also sad. Multitrapping defense has been something I have much desired, and I suppose this is about as close as we’re going to get to that. Humorous that snake traps has it’s own category, perhaps I’ll use them more now that I can – though they seem pretty useless in general these days.

I kinda wonder with the cooldown reintroduced to LnL, should it also have a small chance to proc with Serpent Sting again? It is at least nice to see that explosive traps willing kick it off has been acknowledged, even if it’s a situational thing now (farming – I kinda wonder if you can fit the trapdance into a marks aoe build or something…)

I still love rolling in pvp with a silly tanking stamina build. As it’s so pratically boneheaded yet fun to play (really slows down most attackers when you can lead them away and get off lots of CC and hang in a firefight for longer.) I wonder though with the pet contribution changes if it will be much less effective next patch. Kinda sad, it was that last sorta unique thing I held onto about my hunter. Not that I don’t use proper gear when I absolutely need to, I just hope the sacrifice change doesn’t survive the PTR so that I’m not feeling encouraged to play more homogenized… I mean, I’m more or less set in cookie cutter Pvp/raid SV builds now.

(again, I gotta stop posting when really tired…)

Wonder if any new tameables/untameables will be changed or introduced next patch… I’m betting the one bonespider is going to become untameable…or perhaps Blighthounds become untameable, or a new cat will find it’s way into the Tournament instances…

(also upgraded Squire with it’s own mount sounds really nice.)

  21. Sara-
I don’t know why you’d think Blizzard would make Blighthounds untameable. They have been around through so many Patches and Hotfixes now, and with them finally running with you correctly I honestly don’t see a reason for them to be removed from the tamable list… Now granted, it really wouldn’t matter a whole lot to me, I don’t have one, and don’t plan on getting one, mainly because practically all the Hunters on my server roll with him (or one of those sickly looking Wolves that Blizzard calls Worgs…)I usually run with my Cat Monteray (Rak’shiri) but that is only because my wolf is not at 80 yet… For my wolf, I personally like the Dire Wolf builds, so I got myself a Unique skin, that as far as I know, I am the only person on my server with (at least level 80′s that is) I have Ironjaw from Terrokar… but even with all of that, I personally don’t believe Blighthounds will be untamable…

  22. Blighthounds will NOT become untameable- they are an INTENDED tame, not like the Hydralisk, Crocoslime or Ghostdile were.

And when don’t Rogues complain. No offense to rogues just seems most go; OGOD I CANT KILL IT IN FIVE SECONDS!!!!

  23. I like that the base flyers will have 150% movement instead of just 60%… lets me hold-off a little longer on epic flyer for three of my alts. :)

Would like to see the “cower” bug fixed – so I don’t have to keep turning it back off, every now and then.

  24. “The ravasaur trainer Mor’vek has returned to Un’Goro and will offer to help Horde players raise and train a Venomhide Ravasaur as a mount… if they can survive the creature’s deadly poison.”

    I KNEW I should’ve rolled a Horde! Now…raise a new hunter, or grab a DK?

  25. Seveil:
Of course. Any nerf like that won’t really hurt the best in slot players. Actually our best geared hunter doesnt see a problem with his BM spec compared to SV, a loss of only 700dps. The real point that I want to make though is that the feral nerf is a big hit to majority of players. How many people have actually beaten Ulduar or have all their best in slots? Not alot. This is a pretty good size nerf, maybe not “big” but certainly not small.

Not to mention that Blizzard has begun this system of “the harder the playstyle, the better its damage should be”, that’s why BM got nerfed so hard in the first place. Feral is one of the hardest rotations currently in game for a dps. If a feral is beating a rogue or hunter, than maybe it’s a skill or gear issue the players are having, not a skill issue.

  26. If a feral is beating a rogue or hunter, than maybe it’s a skill or gear issue the players are having, not a base damage issue******

    I can’t type today =(

  27. Well dont know what to think about the level locks cause last time I went to play my twink he wasnt a twink anymore all the legging and enchants where on!! but the are only effective at the levels that are meant to use them is wierd seeing my leggings habt the specs of the armor but says no effective til level60 on it glad I have A LW and didnt have to spend all that money and other enchants that say cant use tell this level what makes me laugh was i some twinkage just enough to keep me in the game and use my skills to get my HK. But I have to laugh when I was in queue a level 19 pally comes to me and says your no twink which I replied I never said I was But this Pally had more hp and mana then some 39 lvl i mean had the shoulder armor from the battle grounds legging armor etc.. and now all the cash and twinking he put into that pally is gone and gold spent is gone!! I do miss playing the BG’s when you could only get enchants etc… at a certain level made it more even and showed who had learnd to use there toon skills and not relied on enchants and all the other.. I have been playing since Wow came out As for the traps multiples nice in one way but they still havent fixed the problems with the traps that us hunters have asked to fix!! Multiple bad traps??

  28. Rikaku: You have to remember. The classes blizzard favors the most are rogues, warlocks and death knights. Then retri paladins and it was resto droods, now it seems to be resto shaman, then resto droods.

I mean they completely screwed over feral and balance cause of resto three times over if I remember right.

so when rogues whine, what happens, WE ALL FEEL THE HURT.

  29. Double Post: Tho granted if it takes 5 people to down a single paladin, a single DK or a single Resto, then something is obviously horribly wrong somewhere

  30. death knights are “the first hero class” – which implies a special treatment to a new category of classes that must top the original batch.

as for QQing in general- the other’s garden is always greener.
and some people will always QQ.
    even hunters.

if you look at hunter class definition in blizzard official site you will see that the dead-zone range and the poor melee performances are an integral part of the weaknesses built into the class. they are designed like that on purpose from the start- so no use crying over it. its just a part of the package.

on the other hand the ability to use only one trap at a time was never stated as a class weakness so the prospect the new changes to trap setting was probably planned for a long time.

IMO we should save our QQing for things like the cower self-activation bug. that at least is something blizzard agree needs fixing… eventually.

  31. Well heroics are suppose to be a tougher class will give you that..
Having a Hunter the thing is I dont ask for my melee to be that of a melee class but to have it work like it suppose too!! What i want is my wingclip to actually slow my opponent down.. my disengage to work on all terains and my traps to do what they are suppose to do!
As for the deadzone? well now with all the changes since the game came out and classes get stronger bubbles immune from traps and trinkets anf the pally freedom of movement spell!! Alot of the shots dont penetrate fast enough and since they know the dead zone they run to the hunter and not flee like before!! So hunters when pvping dont have much resistance to other classes and if we dont see a rogue well whole different story sure out the questing and farming and dailies we do fine but when your playing pvp you should have at least a balance to the game we get nerfed more then others and when you ask blizzard they say hunters are a hard class to define since we are not melee or casters but we use mana? I do agree that if it takes a group to down one class of player then something needs to be looked at i have many times used alot of ammo and mana to drop a resto druid and it very hard to do

  32. QQ of willing to buy less retarded alliance or dishonerable HK’s –; get on Yas do some questing, druid tries to gank me, for some reason comes up as a ?? but when I return there it is, lv 22 I’m all .. and twoshot it. Should I have no but I wasn’t in a happy move it tried to gank me. Then get ganked by a DK but thought after swearing. Fair enough.

I go to Hillsbrad, and what happens? Big EPEEN SV hunter decides oh lets oneshot the lowbie!

    Ah the love of midsummer festival –;

  33. @Rikaku: hunters also get the fact that capping our physical hit will cap our pet’s expertise and spell hit in addition to its physical hit. Spell penetration is also a PvP only stat just as much as resilience is (since it is designed to counter player spell resistances)

@Ryai: the Roar of Sacrifice change was designed to bring back its PvP utility without making it overpowered in PvE the way it used to be (i.e. back when the damage split version could be used on a main tank). It will indeed make it a pure PvP ability in 3.2. While the current version has some limited use in hunter soloing, I doubt that will be enough for Blizzard to keep it the way it is (although there are already others arguing on the Blizzard forums that they don’t like the change).

  35. @ maree- why do you think mount availability will be bad at level 20?

I get the feeling most of wow’s current players are veterans of the game so that most of the low level characters are alts.
these experianced alts do not need or want to “see the world at leisure”. they want to get to a certain level for twinking or get to end game content as fast as possible to join in the more serious gaming of raids.
getting around easier in teh low levels will only reduce the annoyance and the only thing this will change is reduce a few more hours from the time it takes to level a char from 20 to 30.
when mounts were only available from 40 (and leveling was much slower then) the mere boredom of traveling by foot till level 40 caused me to give up and delete two alts- priest and warrior- who otherwise I would have kept for the occasional fun of trying out tanking and healing instead of just ranged dpsing.
I think blizzard understand this and this is why death knights start at 55 and by 58 they already have a free mount and all the flightpaths open.

  36. “Actually, the XP-block is hardly going to kill twinking. In point of fact, it’s going to make twinking FAR EASIER since anyone wishing to twink can now simply level to the level needed without worrying about accidentally going over the cap, turn off their xp, and then continue to do whatever they need to do to get their twink gear at their leisure. I know some twinks and they’re all super happy about this change.”

ACTUALLY, POINT IN FACT – XP blocking has completely killed twinking. There is no point in getting twinked because now, you can only fight other twinks and ll your effort of gear-getting is GONE. So, leave the XP on and get the same results in the scrub-bgs for crybabies that QQed to blizz about twinks. Let me say one thing: WORLD OF WARCRAFT IS BASED UPON GEAR INEQUITIES. Having better gear than the other guy is WHY people play this game. I don’t care if you have like 3 friends that say gear is not important, b/c those same scrubs will poop their pants when T9 tokens drop for them.

That being said, TWINKING IS OFFICIALLY DEAD. Might as well make naked bgs where everyone punches each other.

  37. “Might as well make naked bgs where everyone punches each other.”

Actually I think that sounds like a lot of fun. :> But I understand how it might not be for you.
