BRK’s Farewell
Today Big Red Kitty announced his (temporary?) retirement from WoW as he rededicates himself to his family.
Hunter Darkwood, from my own home server of Farstriders, has posted on the WoW Suggestion forum:
And I would like to suggest that Blizzard honor him somehow. Maybe a rare tameable Red Kitty somewhere. Or a non-combat pet (red kitty of course) but if you can’t do that then just give us a Dwarf Hunter roaming around IF saying things like “fo’ shizzle” and asking for a rasberry Latte.

Such a shame to see BRK leave, he was so awsome, especially all his youtube videos :(
I like both the non combat pet red-kitty, and the dwarf hunter – he’d be named Daniel Hobbes of course!
Well this is depressing.
My god. I’m so sad…. I mean don’t get me wrong, he made the right choice. But after losing Resto4Life’s wonderful writings, this is another big blow to the WoW-blog community. I honestly loved BRK’s witty humor and writing. Man… so sad =(
My first reaction was depression at losing such a excellent voice for hunters. But then I realized he is doing what is best t for those that matter most — his family. Best wishes and hope to see you return at some point in a more casual role.
My heart hurts for him, since that can’t have been a personal discovery that was fun to make.
I think a non-combat red kitten or dwarf hunter in IF would be awesome.
ha! I was totally thinking that blizz needs to honor him in the game some how too! He has to be the most famous hunter WoW blogger, if not the most famous altogether. He got several of us into blogging to begin with. He will be missed, but he totally made the right choice.
NOOO!!! I’m really sad.. But, it would be awesome for there to be a big red kitty non-combat pet or tamable beast out there. It’d ease my pain very slightly though until he comes back. I REALLY hope it’s temporary .__.
Man I’ma miss that guy.
I’m gonna tame all my cats hobbs just as a reminder for everyone never to forget him.
*name not name my bad
I am glad. He is doing what needs to be done. And now is a good time to take a break from the game anyway. This may sound horrible, and I do not intend it to, but I hope he never comes back into full time WoW. He has a wonderful family, and he needs to pay attention to it. WoW is a game. But things like love and family are forever. I will miss his commentaries for the most part. But this is something that needs to be done. And honestly, a lot of people could learn a lesson from it.
im glad to hear its just him needing to spend more time with his family and you know, actually doing that.
i thought someone he cared about had died when i first read the line “Today Big Red Kitty announced his (temporary?) retirement from WoW as he rededicates himself to his family.”
i wish him and his family well…
All I can say is that I hope this isn’t some april fools joke that tomorrow he is going to announce that his retirement is a prank. If this is the case then it will be in very poor taste.
I’m an avid BRK fan, and whilst I do not always necessarily agree with his theory crafting 100% of the time, his writing style is what keeps him at the top of my list of blog sites to visit every morning with my coffee. Needless to say, he will be missed.
I believe he will come back after figuring out how to balance wow addiction with a healthy family life.
All family guys eventually have to figure out how to balance their work and their play. Myself I had to quit wow for almost a year before I felt like I had my priorities straight and now only play very casually. Even if BRK feels like he has to leave the game forever, here’s to hoping that he can better balance his family, work, and fun!
Cheers, BRK!
It’s awesome he’s leaaving the game for the right reason…family. I’ve enjoyed his video’s of the rare and semi-rare pets in Azeroth, and will miss his wonderful sense of humor…
And if we’re talking about anyone being put in the game for providing the WoW community with advice and help, then I nominate Mania. Petopia IS the hunter bible, isnt it? What do we all say when a new hunter says where can i get a level 20 pet? “Petopia” Yes,it is Brashendevours site…but Mania maintains it.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t have BRK honoured as such in the game…I’m saying Mania has done as much,or more, and deserves to be considered as well.
Good luck and God bless,BRK.

You only (very) occasionally hear about the “RL” thing on WoW forums – it is after all a game intended to be an escape from reality. Instead the closest the community normally comes is to engage in somewhat vague “hardcore” vs “casual” debates, e.g. how many hours do you have to put in to be considered “good”, have access to better gear, etc – and which ultimately is used by Blizzard to gauge overall player satisfaction and plays a big part in their development of upcoming expansions.
I’ve seen some good points made on both sides, and obviously it’s a debate that is going to continue as long as there are MMORPGs… but when the measuring stick ultimately comes down to time commitment, then at some point players have to make a choice between WoW and… everything else – and realize that continuing onward down the game/character progression path means neglecting family, friends, work etc… the exact point will of course vary from player to player according to their own situation, but everyone reaches it sooner or later.
When I see people strutting around talking trash in layers upon layers of epic gear, I know they have paid a price for that stuff – beyond just logging a whole lot of hours and memorizing all of the raid/pvp strategies by heart.
So it’s refreshing to see someone as “big” as BRK acknowledging and addressing this conflict within his own life in such open and heartfelt terms, because it presents a much needed perspective. Good for him, and I hope he can use the three months separation to return to being his wife’s “knight in shining armor” (and “Super Dad”, of course). :)
Maybe the new Spirit Beast, Gondria, can be considered as an honor for BRK
Goonight sweet prince.
Good luck BRK, your movies always made me smile.
I really only read two or three wow blogs but only one religously. He did make the only choice. He will be missed. But you cant put a NPC dwarf asking for rasberry lattes in IF.. what about all us Horde hunters that listen. He needs to be somewhere else. Besides what a odd ball questline you could set up .. find the rare rasberry latte drop. turn in to brk for … .. a little red kitten pet.
Oh man! I’ll miss him. Well, there’s nothing more important then family so that’s good at least :)
Good luck BRK
i think blizzard should give BRK a special vanity pet. I think it should be either a small purple tiger(like Hobbes) under the BW effect … the colors and such or just a plain red cat, both would work. The pet should be the size of Mr Bigglesworth in naxx… forever immortalizing BRK in a large big red kitty pet that all coud have. I also think it would be neat if you could buy this cat from a dwarf named Daniel who wanders around Ironforge with Hobbes following him much like Timmy wanders around Stormwind.

Good post Scott. That bit about outside-of-game sacrifices was very well put. I feel like a lot of the people who hang out in IF all day spamming trade should read what you’ve said.
Being that BRK’s somewhat of a WoW celebrity and iconic figure for many, hopefully his decision will cause many others to evaluate their choices as well.
Jaide:
That would be real nice of Blizz. The one-of-a-kind pet or a big red kitty. (I don’t even want to know what a name like Rottingham would get me though :P) however, Blizz isn’t nice to hunters… I think It’s wrong. BRK does deserve something good.
…Maybe a petition would help…
While the non-combat pet or tamable pet idea is nice…..I really like the idea of an NPC version of BRK wandering the halls of Ironforge. And someone suggested the name of Daniel Hobbes…..that would be too perfect. Hope Blizz is reading this. Thanks Mania for giving us a post to comment on this.

The NPC would have be in a neutral place like Dalaran for us Hordies :( I’m sure he’ll be back in some extent once he makes up some much-lost time with his red-headed maelstrom of fury and son. WTB BRK the novel :)
As a fellow dwarf hunter I feel a hole in my heart as I have one less stoned, drunken, fat, stupid oaf to roll on loot on phat epixxx for… uurgh I mean, I’ll miss him and his humor a lot. If he’s on youtube a fair bit he’ll probably come back after watching some video that’s better than his and has a really happy crocodile in it, inspired to force us with priest alts to watch ever increasingly bigger and redder kitties not only do most of your dps, but LICK THEIR OWN BEHINDS. Nerf.
I think he made the right choice in leaving WoW like he did. A lot of people get really into that game. My Step-dad used to play it a lot instead of spend time with me or my mother, or doing something else with us or when we had family over. He quit too though, but mostly because he got Carpal tunnel from too much playing.
A lot of people spend too much time on the game, and even though I still play, I’m not as excessive as I used to be, and I learned to pay attention to my schoolwork and whatnot. However, BRK should still be honored in the game. If not for being an excellent blogger during his time in the game, then at least for making a good example for some people in the game.
While I am sad to see BRK go, I’m honestly not surprised.
Call me a bit of a pessimist, but after reading his blog for awhile, and seeing how much time he dedicated to the hunter community AND the fact that he had a family and children, I told myself, “Yeah, we’ll see how long this lasts.” I can’t even log in a quarter of the time that BRK does, without my spouse b**ching at me (and we don’t even have children!). I don’t see how he could have kept up his playtime and balance his family, and kudos for him to admitting that he couldn’t and doing the right thing.
And for a memorial, there should be a dwarf NPC with a kitty pet following the coffee vendor in Shattrath, harassing him for a raspberry latte.
Daniel made me really love playing the Hunter, and as such, I will miss his blog and his podcasts greatly.
If Daniel is smart, after three months he should return as a casual player, and lose the podcast and blog. No more ‘Project Lore’ crap, no more merchandising, just casual play.
His wife took the first test of thier relationship by leaving for a job for three months. She found out she could handle it. So she confroted Daniel, and he made the right move. But the test is just starting. If he goes back to his full-time raiding, blog, podcast and all that, I’m afraid she’ll make a more permanent move. Daniel needs to continue to put family first after the three month hiatus, and she’ll be watching him closely.
As much as I hate to say it, I hope I never see another BRK blog entry or podcast. That way I’ll know he’s putting his kid and his relationship with his wife first. You can be a great spouse and parent and still play quite a bit of WoW, but not at the level of committment Daniel was giving to the WoW community.
If they ever make a tameable beast i will be sure to get it and just have it by my side when sitting in Dalaran!
You shall be missed BRK!
I agree – a tribute to BRK – he greatly deserves it with all the work he did to help the WoW community at large and hunters specifically.
Grats on BRK’s willingness to prioritize. It can be difficult to come to such a decision.
good for Hobbes, he made the right choice. Yes, A new hunter quest might be in line to get eather a non combat or combat pet. Needs to be in a neutral location, as you mentioned, those dwarfs love thier drinks so he might be looking for the perfect rasbery latte
