Slivers posted on our forums this morning that the most recent build of Patch 3.1 on the Public Test Realms — which I haven’t even bothered to post about yet since there seemed to be no hunter changes — includes a fascinating change to the new Call Stabled Pet skill.
As Slivers says:
Even though [Call Stabled Pet] remains on a 30minute cooldown, Blizzard has linked a reset of the timer to the Dual-Spec capability. Everytime you switch talent-specs, [Call Stabled Pet] is made available!
And it’s true! Switching between your two talent specs resets the Call Stabled Pet timer every time, no matter how many times you switch or how fast.
Unfortunately, Call Stabled Pet still requires level 80 to train, which is a bit of a problem since Dual Talent Specialization can be unlocked at level 40 and exotic pets can be tamed at level 60.
But for the moment on the PTR, if you are level 80 and have dumped 1000 gold into Dual Talents, you can access your stable anywhere, anytime.
I had a pretty fair sized rant typed out, but decided against it. This is a good thing, to be sure, but at the same time just feels like another simplification, another way Blizzard is holding peoples hands.
If the timer is reset using dual specs, why not just take off the timer in the first place, or at least remove the timer if you pay for dual specs.
Otherwise, we will probably just see macros that will swap specs so that call stabled pet is always available.
I’d just like them to fix pet talent points when switching from BM to any other spec and back again. When you go from BM to SV or MM your talent points get refunded. When you swap from SV to BM you dont get a refund you just get the 4 additional points. It’s currently possible to switch from BM to SV then back to BM without choosing points to start at 0 again but thats kind of a pain.
Petopia is down again :(
Thanks, Araeli — I’m on it.
Seems like they realized they had a big problem with the dual spec solution and pets. The elegant option would be to attach a default pet to each spec (perhaps the last pet that you had out with that spec), but since that would require recoding they only have one real option, and that is to make the c/d on “call stable pet” the same as the c/d on switching specs (which they have essentially done now).
TBH why not just lower the cooldown of call stabled pet to 10 minutes? Or five? I feel a bit cautious over them linking talents like this. As in it could cause bugs and etc :s
Seems a bit pointless. Just give it the same CD as dual spec swapping. If this works how it reads, you could simply swap to one spec, then swap back, and be able to change your pet whenever you want.
kaze950: That is indeed how it works right now.
Mind you, I haven’t seen Blizzard say anything about it yet, so this may be an in-between state as they play with it.
Seems a bit of a complicated way to do it.
But this way people who don’t buy the dual-spec will be stuck with the half-hour timer. Not that I imagine it would come up often for people not swapping between BM and non-BM specs.
Isnt there the issue of how you swap specs? dont you need to be near some kind of book or something? That would give the 30 min cd meaning still, although not much.
Huzzah!!!!
ihlos: Nope, they removed the whole Lexicon requirement. You can swap specs anywhere with no cooldown now — although you can’t do it in combat or in Arenas (I believe) and it does have a 3 or 5 second ‘casting’ time.
It’s arena/combat/BG- but BG is an exception as supposedly you can switch it in the prep time.
I think- I don’t remember all of the notes Aria cp’d in msn.
Supposedly they’re also fiddling with taunt mechanics and I’m not sure if they mean the ‘Taunt’ skill- pets included, or any ‘taunt’, pets included. While I wouldn’t mind a boss immune to growl to make the tanks shut up about U HAS PET ON GORE STOP GORE [._. one did do that basically for half a HoS/L run], it also has me fretting over the other change- diminishing returns. Does this mean Growl? Or Taunt? And does anyone even have their pet use taunt? Really O_o
And outside of that if they screw up about diminishing returns and this does include Growl- … is this another 2.4? :/ broken boars? Broken growl?

Well there is some news that I’ve been waiting for :) well, good news anyways. I was wondering how Dual talents and Call stabled pet were going to work.
Those of you saying how someone could just swap spec back-and-forth and get Call Stabled Pet anytime… who needs to changet that often? I use my gorilla for farming/lowbie-instance soloing, and my raptor for raids and grinding, and that’s all.
Who truly needs to switch pets every couple minutes?
*sigh* Well, I don’t find myself wanting to swap pets every half hour as it is, but… I’m poor. I’m probably not going to be paying for dual specs, when I don’t even have epic flying yet. So now I’m not going to be able to swap pets on the fly as often as someone who can afford to shell out 1K? Super. It’s like paying for an express stable, or something.
I have a feeling, this being the PTR and all, this will change before it goes live.
Really,did Blizz actually do this(as it’s awesomesauce+1000 as it is!),or is it
an exploit thay haven’t seen yet? Not like it makes us OP,I mean, really? Would any other class say that about this neat little trick? Just curious, really…
Off Topic: I’m glad you decided to stay on the forums,Palla…I always enjoyed your posts..especially the double ones! “smiles”

In honor of Palla,my double post “smiles”
Removing the need to be near a Lexicon of Power to change specs was one of the best decisions Blizz has made in quite some time, imo.
Now they need to SERIOUSLY fix the “prowl” and “cower” fiasco…please?!?
Kitairra
I agree Wykea…I switch from my Spirit Beast right before starting an instance since switching to SV will not support it. The instance will generaly take the length of the CD to switch back at least and when I’m done and ready to quest/farm I switch back. To switch pets every couple minutes is ridiculous at best! Either remove the CD or leave it be and stop wasting time with that when there are far more pressing issues to work on.
@Ryai
Growl is a threat generation mechanic not a taunt.
They are playing with all “taunt” mechanics to stop tanks taunting bosses from across a room and back like ping pong as a form of damage mitigation which blizz feels is clever but an exploit. The diminishing returns will apply to pet “taunt” as well but as this is on a 3 min CD I doubt it is an issue. Makes me wonder about bosses like Gluth and Horsemen though.
The only other issue is if you are in BM with a regular pet and then swap to another spec, your pet points are refunded. Meaning you are constantly respeccing pets.
but you still need a lexicon of power to switch between talent… so assume you’re already in a city… and u can get access to stable really close by.
Actually, no — they removed the need for the Lexicon to switch specs a while back.
You need to be at a Lexicon of Power to switch specs but inscription poeople make an item that makes one if they have group member help.
They changed that? Wow, I’m out of it.
(Just tamed Old Cliff Jumper!)
