Surprise! Patch 3.0.9
I wander off for a day or two and Blizzard launches a numbered patch. That’s not quite what I expected when I crawled out of bed today … but it’s also not unwelcome.
Unfortunately this is not patch 3.1, the next really big patch of class changes and the Ulduar dungeon and all. But 3.0.9 does contain the a bit of interim-unnerfing of Beast Mastery, hand in hand with some pet skill nerfs (that look fairly minor to me, but what do I know?).
As I type this, the patch notes are not yet available on the WoW patch note page, so for the moment I’m using the text files that downloaded with the patch. Here’s the hunter bits:
Hunters
- Kindred Spirits (Beast Mastery): This talent now grants 20% pet damage at max rank.
- Serpent’s Swiftness (Beast Mastery): This talent now grants 20% pet attack speed at max rank.
- Pets
- Lava Breath now reduces the target’s casting speed by 25%, down from 50%.
- Poison Spit now reduces the target’s casting speed by 25%, down from 50%.
There are also additional changes to druids, mages, paladins, priests, rogues and warlocks, as well as some changes to the new “GM wishes to speak with you” interface and some minor bug fixes — but nothing that interested me.

Lava breath nerf?! It’s got low enough dps as it is, the cast time slow down was the only good thing about it :(
Sorry if the dps has been upped on that pet spell, haven’t played in about a month due to my hunter being currently trapped in Dalaran’s lag.
EDIT: Sorry if the dps has been upped on that pet spell and I said it has low dps
arg, they nerfed poison spit
No, to both of those. Well yes, but no. Casting speed reduction was, well, reduced all around. Anything that reduced casting speed was HALVED. Warlocks, rogues, hunter pets all three. So while yes, it was a nerf, no, it wasn’t aimed specifically at pets.
Not like casters need the help. Had a tauren druid starfall critical me for 9,000 last night. Yeoch.
Palladiamors: I think that Balinothan was talking about the cast time increase with Lava Breath, which slows down casting along with the damage caused over time.
Lava breath does instant damage, Moiri, but I was talking about the reduction as well. Every spell that reduces casting time got halved. From 60% to 30% for warlocks, and from 50% to 25% for everyone else with a slow down option. Like I said, it wasn’t a pointed pet nerf, it was an all around nerf that was meant to help lengthen caster life expectancy in PvP.
OH, you mean the spit! *LAUGHS* Sorry! Had a brain fart on that one.
As Palla said, the change to casting speed reduction effects was applied across the board: the warlock, mage and rogue 60% casting speed slows were reduced to 30%, while the warlock and hunter pet 50% slows were reduced to 25% (the two warlock variants are just the two ranks of Curse of Exhaustion).
I don’t PvP enough to have much on an opinion on that, but I suspect it was a healing oriented change rather than having anything to do with DPS casters (although it is something of a buff to them as well of course).
Ok, after running more heroics today than I ever have total in all of WotLK so far, I can honestly bring this message from my Spirit Beast.
It’s good to be back.
Course, BM still isn’t the top, but it’s ALOT better than what it was 3.0.8. That’s all I have to say XD
OK, sorry, I mis-read your reply. I thought that you were thinking something else.
Nah, no need to apologize Moiri. It was just a little misunderstanding. *Smiles*
I think its more of a combat oriented change then a healer one. Probably aimed more to help out balance druids and elemental shamans then anyone else. HOWEVER, that is just speculation on my part, and I may very well be wrong. Most healers can get rid of some form or another of cast slowing type, though. Paladins can take care of poison and ((If they exist)) magic oriented ones, druids and shaman can get rid of poison and curse variants, priests can remove the magic variant. ((There IS a magic variant! Slow!)) Bearing this in mind, it seems like it’d have been aimed more at warlocks, shadow priests, and mages.
Least, thats this mountain boys take on it. *Chuckles* I reserve the right to be wrong!
I totally doubled back on myself there……. *Coughs* Blame it on being three AM, but the conjecture I came up with towards the end seems closer to right to me.
Ah, good thing I woke up early today.
So, with blizzards try on fixing bm, is it worth it now?
I await the day it’s ok for me to run around with a beloved exotic pet.
Damn it, Mania! When will you finally get it through your head that BLOG > LIFE?
ROFLMAO
Chizesu, to those of us who like BM, it was always worth it. If your asking whether or not they are doing overpowered damage again, no. But they are dealing damage only slightly lower then survival at the moment.
I respecc’d bm (was survival) tonight and ran H vh with another survival hunter. Previously this hunter was doing about 300 more dps with me on average in 25 man naxx (better gear ;p). In H vh, i averaged 2-500 less than her and even did better by 1-200 dps on two of the boss fights. (rotation: serpent, arcane, multi, steady, spam “i am god” button whenever cooldown is up)
It’s not scientific, but it is conclusive. *hugs devilsaur*
BM *is* a viable spec again, and for me, pve=raiding. I can feel comfortable with my raid spot as bm, now.
Hello!
Did anyone look at the caster dmg of the pets since the patch? For example the rake (bleeding dot) of a cat? Despite the pet char window claims something about +XXX bonus dmg für casts, bleeding ticks with rediculous 80. Also does scorpid poison with ticks around 100 or so (cat is lvl78, scorpid lvl80). Does this bonus dmg play any roll at all or is it completely sensless now?
Crap, they weakened my Serpents, Hailfire and Hailice, after all the work I went to get my Deviate Viper and Deviate Moccasin. Don’t know why I have two serpents, but…I love ‘em.
XD I’m level 27, whenever oppsote atacked I had my Serpent Poision Spit them, then I ran like an idiot. Unless it was weak enoguh for me to fight :)
Does Beast Lore inclue buffs? Like if I use it on another pet, will I see it with bonuses if it’s someone else’s? Because if so, my serpent Hailfire has higher damage then a cat :) Which I doubt.
