Lunar Festival Starts!

omen_beastlore

The Lunar Festival started today!

That doesn’t have much to do with pets, really, but it did bring us final confirmation that Omen — the big furry two-headed Kurken-like raid boss of Moonglade during the Lunar Festival — cannot be tamed. As you can see, he is officially a demon.

Well, we always have the kurken

  2. Volcan - January 24th, 2009 @ 2:09 pm UTC

It would be fun if it was bugged and he was tameable and killing him as a pet would produce the Elune’s light as well :D

To link this in with hunters, a hunter once solo’d this guy

AotC and jump shots, traps to hold aggro. Kited it right through timbermaw hold, down felwood, through ashenvale, into barrens and orgrimmar, and circled it around the main Orgri area. It was about 40% then and players and guards annihlated it.

I’m alliance and its disappointing to know you cant do this as all Kalimdor alliance cities are on islands, but you can try and kite. That’s assuming they haven’t leashed him up

    >_-

  4. Daetur - January 24th, 2009 @ 3:00 pm UTC

It has been reported that Omen is now leashed to the end of the bridge. Too bad for us kite-happy players.

  5. shir_kirakira - January 24th, 2009 @ 3:15 pm UTC

Am I the only person glad that Omen isn’t tameable?

Since he’s part of a holiday achievement, imagine the nightmare that would ensue if he WAS tameable. If I were a raid leader, I’d be mad if I came to Moonglade to do the Omen quest, only to find a line of hunters repeatedly camping his spawn to tame him. Or, on the hunter end, imagine being in mid tame and an entire raid of players came and slaughtered him right in front of you. Yeah, it probably is a good thing that he ISN’T tameable (and besides, we have an identical skin for him anyways. It takes the fun out of things but at least we can get a two headed white doggie elsewhere).

  6. Jimmy - January 24th, 2009 @ 3:26 pm UTC

Um as a raid leader you wouldn’t care as anyone attacking it would cancel the hunter’s tame. Unless the new “tap” mechanics applys to taming which i’m willing to bet it doesn’t.

The model is common as muck as you can tame the lowbie one.

  7. Kikaku - January 24th, 2009 @ 4:49 pm UTC

I think taming does tap him since it’s a move that causes aggro towards you even though it doesn’t hurt him. Only body aggro doesn’t tap I believe

  8. Hasamana - January 24th, 2009 @ 6:25 pm UTC

*raises hand* One of those hunters who kited him to Org. ;o

Hardest part was Timbermaw, LOS was a bit weak to keep aggro on him and timing took a bit of working to keep him from tapping me and getting me dazekilled. Took a few attempts too. I was actually using Pack though, and had a priest running with me for heals (couldn’t always avoid Starfall completely while maintaining aggro on Mr. Puppy).

Too bad to hear people can’t have the fun I did with him anymore. :D

  9. Rahthiel - January 24th, 2009 @ 7:32 pm UTC

I love the fact that I didn’t have to kill him to get the quest. A bunch of 80s nailed him and I just walked into the light lol. Yay for easy quest!

  10. Shinryu Masaki - January 24th, 2009 @ 7:36 pm UTC

I think body aggro can tap too. At least when I tried to do the wyrmrest temple defence daily quest yesterday I had problems finding un-tapped dragons and drakes, as from what I saw they all got tapped when they attacked other players, even though the players never hit them at all.

  11. Ryai - January 24th, 2009 @ 10:05 pm UTC

I got to kill Omen twice :D

Tho the first time some real sick … pardon my french, Alliance, went PVP to gank our AoE ‘brigade’, we managed to down him the first time, even in mostly lv 75 quest gear and lv 70 pvp gear I came out at 888 DPS/rank 8 .. outta 12/13 people but still.

DONT BURST MY BUBBLE OF HAPPINESS DDDD:

The second time was less fun, me and my two friends decided to help out a group… and turns out they were just two people in the group and they didn’t bother to try and find anyone else after one search in moonglade ._.

So my friends, myself, the two idiots and a handful of alliance stand there just watching. Waiting. As Omen is tottering around like a giant fuzzy hound- makes me want to tame Kurken.. IF HE WASNT SO SMALL COMPARED TO A TAUREN /cry

Anyways so this lowbie rogue appears. And .. actually attacks Omen- or tries to. LEVEL. THIRTY. TWO.

    Omen ofc oneshots him.

Omen then aggros onto a lv 70 paladin. The level 70 paladin runs towards us and we’re all laughing- untill we notice he’s STILL DRAGGING OMEN and it’s justy RUN AWAY RUN FROM THE SHOWER OF SHINIES.

This happened repeatedly untill some serious alliance showed up and we all downed him since it DOESNT matter which side kills him aslong as he’s down, you can still get the quest done [stand on corpse, get buff, turn in quest, tada].

The only thing outta that episode tho was there was a lv 80 nelf hunter. And it’s, I don’t like the word Huntard, trust me I never have but, this guy .. he deserved it. He actually tried to SOLO Omen- and no I don’t mean kite away like a warlock tried. I mean he actually tried to SOLO. OMEN. and just stood there, like an idiot. not caring that Omen did one hit and took his cat down to half health.

._. some people should not be hunters.

  12. shir_kirakira - January 25th, 2009 @ 1:44 am UTC

I finished the Blessing of Elune portion of the achievement tonight.

I took Rahtheil’s advice and was just near a group that was fighting Omen. I couldn’t join the raid group because…they were Horde. Shir is Alliance, although to demonstrate her friendliness she did pew pew pew a few token arrows into Omen. And then stood over his lit up body to get the buff for the achievement.

  13. Tsani - January 25th, 2009 @ 6:27 am UTC

I have done the Omen fight several times now and it’s still fun. On my server (Cenarius US) Alliance and Horde just band together to fight him. One side starts the summon and then everyone in the zone just piles on top of poor Omen.

A few things I have learned:
    1. You do NOT need to be in the raid or even on the same side as the rest. A raid or group invite just makes it easier for pre-fight buffs and for the healers to keep melee up.
    2. Alliance/Horde makes no difference, anyone can help with Omen ‘though normal PvP rules still apply.
    3. Anyone can get the quest buff after Omen is dead, even if you never hit him at all. You just need to walk through the lightbeam and it stays around for a few minutes.
    4. If a pally outside your group judges Omen with whatever you still get the effect(often they use the one that gives mana with each hit).
    5. As long as you keep out of the starfall AoE that Omen does you should be fine. As a hunter we probably have it easiest due to being ranged in the first place. You might hit the edge of the Starfall, but just move around, bandage if needed, and keep shooting.
    6. Grab the quest from the platform in town -before- getting “Elune’s Blessing”. It can bug out if you have the buff first and then grab the quest. Better safe then sorry, especially later on in the festival when he’s not killed every 10 minutes.
    6. Low level toons can do their part too, even if it is just to cheer the high-levellers on.

  14. Kitairra - January 25th, 2009 @ 7:56 am UTC

LMAO!! I actually read somewhere(can’t remember where, exactly) that Omen had been nerfed and that it was possible to solo him now. So Sianna and I paid Omen a visit.

    He is NOT solo’able.lol!
5 million hit points, can’t kite at all…yeah, draw your own conclusions on how THAT went tonight…lol!!

Moral of the story? Never believe what you read!
    Except on Petopia.

P.S. When I say not solo’able,I of course mean “I” can’t solo him…I’m sure there are better hunters than I.

    Kitairra

  15. Ryai - January 25th, 2009 @ 9:13 am UTC

Kitairra I doubt Omen is soloable by a hunter- there are things that pets can and can not tank, and Omen is one of them, I saw him knocking down a lv 80 pally in a few hits, hell even our tanks were having trouble and the ally one had like 25k+ hp.

They were pulling your leg :v as always, if they did SS it didn’t happen.

  16. Zallestirra - January 25th, 2009 @ 10:21 am UTC

well, the fel reaver can be soloed at 80 i dont see why Omen cant. th trouble would be finding a time when everyone else isnt already trying to kill him.

  17. Ryai - January 25th, 2009 @ 11:14 am UTC

Er Zallestrirra, the difference between Felreaver and Omen, is their hitpoints.. and how hard they hit and the fact the reaver can be kited to my knowledge and Omen has been fixed. Omen has like 5mil, and the reaver has only what a 100k? That and the Reaver is lv 70 and Omen is lv ??..

Raid boss =/= Felreaver imo :s

  18. Gwelynora - January 25th, 2009 @ 11:35 am UTC

This was a fun couple minutes. I’d forgotten to do the quest to get a scroll of moonglade fun teleport, so I flew over. The raid was laughing at all the individual alliance people (ie, most of the alliance on our server aren’t team players, and they don’t help each other out) who tried to solo Omen. One paladin with only 15k hp managed to heal tank himself for almost a minute.

I got there and dropped my totems (every time I try to switch to my hunter, I play my shaman for a day and fall back in love with her), and we killed him pretty quickly (tank over vent, “He doesn’t hit that hard.”). With graphics turned down, I couldn’t tell starfall was an aoe (none of the falling lights hit anything besides a player, and that was all the graphic I could see). We just stood in the starfall and healed through it. Everyone was happy.

By the way, players of all levels can use an Elune’s Candle on Omen to do serious (comparatively) amounts of damage. You can buy Elune’s Candle from the quest-giver in Nighthaven for Coin of Ancestry.

[edit: Whoops -- I had some of the details wrong. here's what WoWWiki says:

Turn in 5 Coins of Ancestry for [Elune's Candle] which has 88 charges that shoot fireworks at your target. These may be shot at the minions of Omen to freeze them, and does damage to Omen. On players and other NPCs, it produces a fireworks effect. This quest is not repeatable, although you may purchase additional candles for 10 silver each (they are unique, so you can only carry one at a time).]

  20. Sinduril - January 25th, 2009 @ 5:09 pm UTC

Zallestirra, I soloed a Fel Reaver with me and my turtle pet tank specced at level 70 in patch 3.0.2 (the one when the new talent trees were released) and it was hard, so soloing Omen without kiting would probably be pretty impossible. Their differences are pretty big

  21. Tsani - January 26th, 2009 @ 6:51 am UTC

The Felreaver was meant to be downed by a 5-man group, not a raid like Omen. The Fel Reaver also doesn’t spam a AoE attack.

Most people who say Omen can be solo’d or kited get their info from places like WoWhead and don’t bother to read the notes from after 2007. I sometimes wonder if they have even seen the guy, nevermind fought him. When someone compares Omen’s colours to the MC Corehound I know he’s done nothing but skim the info… especially if the guy is playing a Draenei as main!

Omen can no longer be kited across the bridge. He was fixed last year to stop people from kiting him to the town and killing everyone there, and to stop the “tactic” of letting him be killed by Remulos and the Moonglade guards. Both made Moonglade a deathtrap for the lower levels, and Blizz stepped in partly because it is a level 10-20 quest location for Druids.

About that candle, I have seen it on sale for 20 silver at the Festival Token Vendors in Moonglade. I don’t remember if I bought a candle with tokens last year on my toons, but it seems that you no longer need elder coins for the candle in the first place (hurray!).

  22. scott - January 27th, 2009 @ 11:11 am UTC

Not sure as I haven’t heard of it before but I would guess the person who kited Omen did so back when low rank spells still used their original mana amount and not the amount required for the highest rank as they do nowadays, because otherwise I have a hard time believing any hunter could A) remain in aspect of cheetah that long while B) keeping stings or fire traps on Omen and C) not run out of mana within the first few zones (unless of course Omen is vulnerable to freeze trap, unlike 90%+ of the kitable boss mobs in the game)… all in all Blizz has done alot to inhibit crazy hunter kiting adventures (sadly, imo).

  23. scott - January 27th, 2009 @ 11:49 am UTC

In re: the general event, I’ll likely be skipping it – did it last year with several characters and noted they weren’t given credit for any of the elders they visited, or anything else besides putting on the Lunar Festival costume, so afaic until they add in some decent (as in materially useful/not chievement related) rewards, I don’t see any point to repeating my efforts just so I can get the related achievement checkboxes to register.

Seems stupid too, since the game would’ve had to log my festival completions if only to know when to stop offering a given quest to me – sounds like those records got wiped after the event ended. o.O

  24. Wain - January 27th, 2009 @ 7:20 pm UTC

That’s a shame. It’s definitely supposed to remember all the Elders you visited in 2008, because it did for me, which meant I only had the Northrend ones to do. You might want to to report your issue to a GM.

  25. Tsani - January 28th, 2009 @ 5:45 am UTC

The game should remember which elders you have visited for the achievement, but the elder runs themselves are repeatable every year.

Lots of people love Lunar Festival because of the mana/hp candy (8 per elder coin, stacks to 20) and a chance to work on Town reps without wagon loads of runecloth. 75 rep for all your racial towns per elder is worth the world tour for many people with characters from before the rep gain changes. I have even seen a lot of Deathknights on my realm going after the elders just to get their rep up to or above honored. With 75 elders, you could snag (75×75=)5625 rep for all your side’s towns.

  26. scott - January 28th, 2009 @ 11:11 am UTC

The elders apparently still only give rep with Old World factions, so it’s only really relevant if you are one of the deranged few who A) want a cross faction mount and B) are prepared to put in the insane amount of rep grinding needed for it.

I’ve actually done that on a couple of my alts, and got partway there on a 3rd, but finally ran out of steam – at this point I’d rather just focus on checking out the new content and leveling up alts as quickly as possible.

  27. Glassdragon - January 28th, 2009 @ 12:30 pm UTC

The only class that can solo Omen now is a well geared DK. They don’t take much dmg and can heal themselves.
Watched a guildie solo him, took about 23 mins. or so.

  28. scott - January 28th, 2009 @ 5:44 pm UTC

Haven’t heard of this but I suppose if any class could still solo Omen it would have to be the DK…

  29. Urdui - January 28th, 2009 @ 9:38 pm UTC

From what I’ve seen his health doesn’t regenerate. So really ANY class can solo him so long as they’re VERY VERY VERY VERY patient, willing to eat a TON of deaths and don’t mind the LONG respawn timer. Oh and fight nekkid to avoid the durability loss. Hehe….

  30. DeathknightLarry - February 3rd, 2009 @ 3:44 pm UTC

I solo’ed omen.. im a lv 80 maxed out deathknight… any death knight can solo him if they summon army of dead and have alot of good armor and wepons :)

  31. DeathknightLarry - February 3rd, 2009 @ 3:46 pm UTC

still you want to be at least a lv 80 to barlly kill him

  32. Chetala - February 4th, 2009 @ 11:18 am UTC

Kited on the 3rd day of the festival as a L80 superior hunter, survival spec.

    here’s what you do;
    1. cheetah aspect is a MUST
    2. either dismiss pet or put him on passive, he will drag aggro off you and die in 2 shots
    3. move around that weird circle shrine thing near where omen is summoned
    4. main aggro-holding is to jump, turn 180 degrees and fire off either arcane or explosive, either is fine. then turn back another 180 degrees so you don’t lose speed
    5. if you’re going oom, run up onto the platform and switch to viper, wait till he gets close and jump down a ledge. repeat for the second ledge.
    6. rinse and repeat from stage 3

p.s. provided you never stop moving starfall shouldn’t hit you, pathfinding may help but is not needed
