Happy New Year!

This is just a quick note to my poor abused readers to say, “Happy New Year!” and give you a quick status update. Feel free to skip this post if you’re more interested in hunter pets than in the rest of my life. (Goodness knows I am.)

I really didn’t intend to take quite this long a break, but hopefully you’ll forgive me. Things have been rather busier than I am used to in the week after Christmas, and although I haven’t had time to post — or even to keep up with WoW news (and so I hope there hasn’t been much!) — I haven’t exactly been slacking either.

To be honest, this recession has us a little worried, and although we currently have more contracting work than we can handle we’re afraid that might not last long if our employers run out of cash, so we’ve been frantically fulfilling as many contracts as possible in order to save up a little money in case the work dries up. That means that I’ve spent most of this week fiddling CSS and PHP while my husband juggles SQL. What fun!

Then this morning he came down with some sort of really nasty stomach flu that has him completely knackered. I’m hoping to avoid it myself but since I’m taking care of him … well, we’ll see.

But it’s not all work and no play. Although we officially had a small Christmas, we did exchange a few presents. I got a new book of older works by Tim Powers (called
Powers of Two) that I wanted, plus the first few volumes of Buffy Season Eight.

(Aside: I started reading Tim Powers because he shares a name with my late father, but he turned out to be a superb author. Oddly, my mother also shares her name with bestselling author Patricia Cornwell. My aunt, however, gets the worst of this: her name is Robyn Williams.)

I also got the latest expansion to Civ4, Beyond the Sword, and a really cool DVD called Walking with Prehistoric Beasts that uses pretty decent CG to pretend to be a prehistoric nature show in the vein of Planet Earth. Between the two of those and my new books, I have barely logged into WoW this week.

(Aside #2: I did manage a run through Stratholme, though, on Mania (who is level 80, remember). This was the first time I have ever been through Strath. It was neat. I liked it. And don’t let anyone tell you you need a gorilla to solo old instances — my cat Cloud did just fine. The only complication was that I wanted to loot *all* the trash in the hopes of getting a Winter Hat, so rather than let Cloud handle the big groups of non-elites all by himself I pulled them all into an Explosive trap first so they were tagged to me, and then the two of us meleed them down.)

Oh, and just to be complete: I gave my husband a nice left-handed Logitech mouse and some video games. (I was going to get him Spore, but the reviews looked shaky so I got Spore Creatures for the DS instead.)

Anyway … back to work for me! I’ll try to get caught up on news and back into the normal posting routine by next week.

And oh yeah — Happy New Year!

    First!!

Happy new year to you too mania!

Happy new year! But if you want a hat, you’re gonna have to go through the Nexus, which may be too late already. :/ It only drops from Strath mobs if you only have the original WoW, BC dungeons if you only have up to BC, ect.

Sounds rough, and fun. Hope things work out. Spore’s great for a half hour until you finish the campaign, then it gets very boring. I played mine nonstop for about three days then lost any interest in it. It’s cool though. As for WoW I haven’t played my hunter in about 2 weeks, it seems like with him i love him to death when he’s leveling and then he gets boring at 80. I’ve been working on my druid, and a new mage. Hope everything works out, we can handle a little break =D

You should have gotten him Spore. The DS version is a joke, and not worth the money. Spore for PC on the other hand is great. You really missed out.

  5. marzix - January 2nd, 2009 @ 12:39 am UTC

happy new years to you and everyone else. hope this year brings repealed nerfs and many epix for all! spore creature creator is fun, the actually game was semi-disappointing.

  6. shibumi - January 2nd, 2009 @ 2:09 am UTC

Welcome back and happy new year to you both.
I spent *more* time in WoW than planned, and even was able to snag the wonderful Loque’nahak this morning at 0142 (Cenarion Circle). Joy. already got him up 2 levels.
Your comments about Strath make me think I should take my new pet and go try some instances I’ve never been to. (just about all of them it seems)

oh, and you know – thinking about it, I think if I had a blog, I’d remove all the first posts that are there only to claim they are first. then we wouldn’t see them, they would no longer be first, and the glow is gone for them :) awwww

Hope you don’t catch the flu – nasty this time of year.

    /shibumi

I would like more pet-related news. Duh, “Walking With Prehistoric Beasts” is alot older than “Planet Earth”. It has awesome graphics. And “Spore” is an awesome game. I love it.

  8. Softi - January 2nd, 2009 @ 7:58 am UTC

    Happy New Year!! :)

  9. Angelakane - January 2nd, 2009 @ 8:32 am UTC

See this is why I enjoy reading your blogs more than so many others…you tell us about your life! It makes you seem so more humane(and I love your writing style), like that there’s actually someone we can relate to behind “Mania”. And the fact that you’re a girl like me, helps a lot. I’m not alone! woot woot(just kidding, I know there are other girls, especially on this blog, kinda funny actually)

So happy New Years too! =D
And I wish your husband will get well soon

    Happy New Year!

  11. Rottingham - January 2nd, 2009 @ 10:39 am UTC

Happy Be-lated New Year Mania! Just for future reference though, Spore is the only computer game I play when I’m not on WoW. It’s really good :)

  12. Denmother - January 2nd, 2009 @ 11:35 am UTC

    Happy New Year Mania!!

I have to say, I got Spore for Christmas and it is AWESOME!!!! (But not as awersome as WoW. :P)

  13. Dekota - January 2nd, 2009 @ 11:39 am UTC

    Happy New Year!!! :D

I got many wonderful things for chrismas and most of them are wow related XD No Spectral Tiger loot card, alas, But my husband did by me the Big Battle Bear Loot card and I love it ^___^! hopefully next year I will get the spectral tiger *throws up fish* YOOOOOSH!!!!!

  14. Dekota - January 2nd, 2009 @ 11:40 am UTC

  15. hydra - January 2nd, 2009 @ 11:41 am UTC

    Happy new year!

  16. Cal - January 2nd, 2009 @ 12:55 pm UTC

@Jadvya: There’s a chance of the winter hats dropping from ANY mob. It’s a world drop. It’s a very small chance, though.

  17. Viper - January 2nd, 2009 @ 12:58 pm UTC

    Happy New Year Mania!

And your poor Aunt. I feel for her. =)Though she could have a lot of fun with the whole thing. Hehe.

  18. Aidan - January 2nd, 2009 @ 2:39 pm UTC

a really cool DVD called Walking with Prehistoric Beasts

Ooh, nice. Does the DVD come with the american narrator or the british narrator? I remember being really annoyed with the american narrator when that premiered on discovery.

Warcraft has several prehistoric beasts hiding in it! Kodos are closer to being brontotheres than anything else, and striders must be phorusrhacids! (I forget if either of those are in Walking with Beasts. Man, I need those dvds.)

  19. Palladiamors - January 2nd, 2009 @ 5:16 pm UTC

Wait. Buffy Season Eight? I thought they ended at seven?

And take yer time, especially with the economy the way it is. It’s important to have a fund to fall back on in case of hard time’s. We’re here whenever you get around to us, no rush. Hope your hubby gets well soon!

Psh, I’ve solo’d up to Slave Pens, pre-Wrath, with a cat, a wolf, a warp stalker at one point, and probably a few other pets who escape my memory. I’ve DUO’D up to Caverns of Time: Old Hillsbrad, where Thrall goes retarded. Once Thralls dormant downs syndrome kicks in, thats pretty much it. Stupid Orc, not waiting for his healer….or DPSer…. or anything else for that matter.

Ahhhh, Stratholme. 85 runs back in the day just to get my Lightforge leggings. Dead side. Four one live side for whatever piece dropped there, been many moons now. The memories!

Happy New Year and Merry Christmas!!! (lasts up to January 6, hehe)

That’s an awesome haul of presents, glad to hear you’re enjoying them! I loved Buffy dearly… Once more, with feeling! :) Kenneth Branagh narrating prehistoric beasts… I think one of my local video stores has that, must check!

Got an interesting WoW holiday story to share, heading to the forums…

  21. Featherkitty - January 2nd, 2009 @ 9:56 pm UTC

    /Shivers

I got the flu or something and I was in bed all day coughing sucking on couphdrops (they taste good, too)
But anyways Happy New Year to you all!!!

  22. Phyllixia - January 2nd, 2009 @ 10:03 pm UTC

I guess I don’t really need to mention again what you need to do to get a Winter Veil hat, as others already have. Good luck :)

  23. Znodis - January 2nd, 2009 @ 11:18 pm UTC

Sounds like you had a good C-mas. I’ll have to check out Mr. Powers there. I highly recommend reading Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” if you haven’t and friend just recently introduced me to Jim Butcher and the Dresden Files (starts with Storm Front). I’ve been reading them faster than the local bookstore can get them in.

  24. Darknez - January 3rd, 2009 @ 6:14 am UTC

    Happy New Year! :)
Buffy Series 8 – got excited till I saw it was just a book :(
    Bring back Angel!
    AHEM
    I digress…
Spore? I sat through and did all zones in one go getting various achievments… then thought what now? Space just didn’t have enough going for it for me. I enjoyed the first part (which was basically a “posh” version of Feeding Frenzy) and the second part was ok at the start… after that it was like a cheap knock off of an RTS.
I’ve heard the coming expansion will allow you to do more (beam down to other planets etc).

Maybe that’s just me, but I expected a lot more from all the hype.
I think they should have just done SimAnt 2 ! :P

  25. hy88 - January 3rd, 2009 @ 8:49 am UTC

arg! old strat >.< over 100 runs and no epic drops at all from baron. i just want my undead horse already =(
i could solo it at 70 and now at 80 its so easy. with a simple run and feign death at each boss a baron run takes 7-9 min for me.
and there is no need for a tanking pet in these really old instances. ive always been taking my wolf or kitty with me.

  26. Palladiamors - January 3rd, 2009 @ 5:18 pm UTC

Well, it’s a series of comics. Mania, please don’t hit me, but I’ve read the overview, and I think Whedon might have been on crack for this series. And not the nice kind, either. I seriously think he was tossing in a lot more “WTF?!” and almost fangirl moments into it for little to no real reason. Makes me miss the earlier seaons of Buffy…..

Don’t look at me that way. Everyone needs a guilty pleasure. Mine happens to be playing as Destruction from time to time in WAR, and watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. ‘specially Once More with Feeling….

  27. Kitsuno - January 4th, 2009 @ 4:37 am UTC

Winter Hats only dropped from Wrath Instances.

Red from Nexus, and AN (Or Old Kingdom, I can’t remember)
    Green from Occ.

  28. Criven - January 4th, 2009 @ 6:38 am UTC

Heh, I was a little surprised to see Tim Powers mentioned. He’s a wonderful author (I’d heartily recommend Expiration date, The Anubis gates or The drawing of the dark to absolutely anyone)

  29. Berg - January 4th, 2009 @ 8:53 am UTC

Happy New Year! May this year bring you and your family much joy.

  30. Rottingham - January 4th, 2009 @ 6:09 pm UTC

You think Blizz could have given us a Winter Veil present and made a new exotic or two. Still praying for hydras, tripods, and griffons/hippogriphs/wyverns (They have bat, ey could give us these.) I also wouldn’t mind mammoths, but those would be too hard to see around. anyways, merry be-lated Xmas to all and to all a new pet :P

  31. Charlatan - January 5th, 2009 @ 10:16 am UTC

    Happy New Year!!

I am loving Buffy Series 8 tbh, if only cos i think I *have* to have at least some form of Buffy fix for the rest of my life – i still miss it WAAAHHH

(Oh there’s also Angel comics that follow on in a similar vein, I’ve only read one so far tho)

  32. Palladiamors - January 5th, 2009 @ 2:09 pm UTC

Mania, are you aware the Sapphire hive queen is being made untameable?

  33. Gauntlet - January 5th, 2009 @ 4:22 pm UTC

I hope he has enjoyed Spore Creatures — I know the team put a lot of work into it.

  34. ivanator - January 5th, 2009 @ 6:25 pm UTC

So I’ve been checking online lately and I’ve got bad news it turns out that the sappire hive queen may not be tamable in patch 3.0.8 so if u want this beauty you’d better hurry one last thing Tallstriders!!!
