Level 19 Twink Pets
Before Patch 3.0, I would often get e-mails from twink hunters who wanted to change pets but weren’t sure how feasible that was. Unfortunately, it usually wasn’t very feasible. The problem was that if they were already at their chosen level (say, 19) and tamed a new level 19 pet, they still needed to earn XP to get its loyalty up — XP they could often not afford to earn if they wanted to stay level 19. And without loyalty, most pets had no skills.
Thank goodness the situation has changed! Of course, if you tame a pet lower level than you are, you may still need to level it some. But for twink hunters who are already at their peak level, they can at least tame a pet their own level and use it immediately, no leveling required.
So let’s take a look at the pets available at level 19 for level 19 twink hunters. A quick check of the Petopia Advanced Pet Search shows 28 pets across 12 families at level 19, including all three talent trees — not bad at all!
Cunning Pets
The Cunning pets in this list are represented by three families: Serpents, Spiders, and Wind Serpents.
There are three serpents to tame at level 19 and two wind serpents. These are all Elite beasts and all come from deep within Wailing Caverns, so they may not be the easiest to tame. Still, a level 19 hunter with a serpent or wind serpent is sure to draw some attention, especially since these are some of the first pets in those families that you can tame.
The serpent family skill is Poison Spit, a nice ranged DoT that also reduces the target’s casting speed. Wind serpents also have a ranged attack, Lightning Breath, although theirs is a simple immediate damage attack.
On the spider front, there are lots of choices. One of my favorite spiders is available at level 19: Zarakh, the lovely, deadly, rather noisy black and red spider from Bloodymyst Isle. You must have the Burning Crusade expansion to tame Zarakh, and that tame is considerably easier for Alliance than for Horde. Alternatively, there are a few different furry tarantula looks available in pretty accessible locations, plus a nice purplish cave spider from Duskwood. The spider family skill is Web, a 4 second immobilize that provides a really nasty surprise for your enemies.
Ferocity Pets
The Ferocity pets in this list are represented by six families: Carrion Birds, Cats, Hyenas, Raptors, Tallstriders, and Wolves.
If you venture to the Redridge Mountains at level 19, you can tame one of the brightest carrion birds in WoW, the shockingly red Dire Condor. This is your only choice for a level 19 carrion bird, but it is a beauty! Carrion birds’ family skill is Demoralizing Screech, which damages a single enemy and lowers the melee AP of all other enemies in melee range. This is a very popular skill for leveling PvE, but probably not as useful for PvP.
Cats are a popular choice for all sorts of activities, in part due to their dual family skills Rake and Prowl. Rake is a powerful bleed DoT and Prowl allows the cat to attack from stealth for extra damage. Two level 19 cats are available, including the semi-transparent and extremely popular Ghost Saber.
If you’d like to try something a little different, check out the single hyena on the list, a Hecklefang Snarler from the Barrens. These brownish beasts may not look like much, but their Tendon Rip skill packs a powerful punch. Tendon Rip inflicts some damage and also reduces the target’s movement speed by 50% for 6 seconds.
Or perhaps you’d prefer a tallstrider! There is one level 19 tallstrider, a Giant Foreststrider from Darkshore. Tallstriders know Dust Cloud, a move that causes all enemies within 10 yards to miss their next attack. Dust Cloud can be somewhat tricky to master, but may save your life one day.
Raptors are fairly numerous at level 19, with four different colors available. On the other hand, two of those are elite, one is rare and one spawns from a Horde quest, so they may not be the easiest beasts to tame. Raptors’ family skill is Savage Rend, a nasty DoT that can also boost the raptor’s attack power when it crits.
The final Ferocity family available at level 19 is wolves, and there’s a bunch of them. Unfortunately, only two different looks are represented. You can find elite black worgs and white wolves in Shadowfang Keep, or non-elite white wolves in Ashenvale or Duskwood. Furious Howl is the wolf family skill, and although it can be quite valuable in PvE it is not so popular for PvP. Furious Howl buffs the attack power of all party or raid members within 45 yards of the wolf.
Tenacity Pets
The Tenacity pets in this list are represented by three families: Bears, Crabs, and Crocolisks.
We have only one level 19 bear, the Den Mother from Darkshore. The Den Mother can be a little tricky to tame since she has a small family of bear cubs surrounding her, but luckily they are much lower level. So long as you don’t mind slaughtering the children and then enslaving the mother, you should be fine. The bear family skill is Swipe, a simple immediate damage attack that can hit three nearby enemies.
There is also only one crocolisk at level 19, the Deviate Crocolisk from Wailing Caverns. These crocs are not elite and occur near the front of Wailing Caverns, so they also aren’t too bad to tame. Crocolisks know Bad Attitude, a long-cooldown skill that automatically attacks any enemy that strikes the croc. Bad Attitude can do extreme damage in the right situations, but is perhaps less flexible than other skills.
Finally, we have crabs — or possibly crab. Although Petopia lists two level 19 crabs, I’ve recently gotten a couple of reports that the Silithid Protector can no longer be tamed. I haven’t had a chance to confirm yet, but if this is accurate then we are left with only one level 19 crab, the Clattering Crawler from Ashenvale. Crabs’ family skill is Pin, an interesting channeled attack that immobilizes the target for 4 seconds.
Need More?
By the way, you can easily use Petopia’s Advanced Search to get lists like this for levels 29, 39, etc. Just set the ‘Min Level’ and ‘Max Level’ fields to the level you are looking for, set ‘Tameable’ to ‘Tameable Only’, and hit Search! You may also want to set the ‘Exotic’ field to ‘No Exotics’ for twink characters.

From what I’ve seen in 10-19, one of the most useful twink pets is a spider. That web ability makes or breaks a flag run most of the time…
I’ve also seen night elf hunters with cats, since now cats get prowl as soon as you tame them at any level, they both can do the stealth and ambush routine.
Just wanted to add that a number of the pets on these lists show up due to their level, but aren’t tamable until you get the 51 pt. BM talent that allows taming exotic beasts. Just thought I would add that in case there are some new hunters reading that may now know.
Thanks, Knarcus — I forgot to add that comment. I’ve corrected it now. :>
My draenei hunter twink (Hatememore, akama) had a blue crawler from darkshore, called Cobalt… I dont really recomend them, the pin attack from crabs can be dispelled.
She now has a Deviate Dreadfang (Sapphire), I recomend them for people that abuses from terrain, since it has a ranged attack.
Main pet its a ghost saber (Shiroyuki), spent nearly an hour switching between main and twink clearing the place and finding a level 19 ghost saber, there seems to be a 70-75% chance to get a level 20 ghost saber, so if you twinks want one… you better bring a high level friend outside your party.
Wait, what about Birds of Prey? Disarm is an awesome spell, and I ran my little hunter through Darnassus at level 22 to get one. I’d think that they’d get a mention.
How useful are the owls from Teldrassil with their “Snatch” for twinks? Was the question only about the level 19 pets available or the best pet for a level 19 twink?
Re-read the top portion again, so I’ll just stick with my first question above.
Purple spider in Duskwood? What purple spider? All of the purple ones I know of are untamable, unless you mean the silvery-white ones (which have a purple cast) There’s also mine spiders that have that same skin in Ghostlands, though I think they cap at 18. Still, the dif between a pet’s damage at 18 and 19 is negligeable, so don’t forget to check those out too.
Nachtwulf: Yeah, I meant the silvery-purple ones.
Just to be clear, this list is just pets that are exactly level 19 for level 19 hunters who want something their own level with no leveling required. I get e-mail about that pretty commonly, so I thought it was useful. However, if you start looking at under-19 pets or if you are willing to accept a level 18 pet, things do open up quite a bit.
Since I don’t have a lot of twink experience (or any, in fact), I’d love to hear more about what makes a good twink pet.
I would recommend either a cat or a wind serpant. I’ve worked with both in PVP and they do fantastic. Cats are killed with night elvs that shadow meld along with their cat in prowl, you can lay in waite and ambush players. Or a wind serpant for it’s long range attack nice damage and good survivability.
Top 5
The best pet is a turtle from the waters in front of the wailing caverns, then raise it to level 19… it has alot of damage and pretty steady attack speed, the armor is crazy high so it loses health slower than other pets so it having medium life is actually really good. I was able to kill a few lvl 19′s at warsong gulch with the turtle alone. The second best would be the spider, it has the web ability that can help you alot by not getting attacked or stopping flag runners. The third would be the cat/wolf as it is a pretty fast high damage and decent armor, more than most but less than turtle, and decent health. Serpents aren’t as good as they look. They are intimidating though which actually will effect the other player unless they know that something like that actually isn’t stronger. It has poison, decent attack and speed and lots of health but lower armor. It also has ranged so it’s pretty good but not that great. The fifth best would be a raptor for the same as the serpent except it doesn’t have poison or ranged but has more armor.
Jay- all tank pets have high armor/health now. And tbh the people who let themselves be killed that way aren’t that smart anyways :x and I think you need to get caught up in the cunning, ferocity and tenacity changes for pets.
TBH I don’t just see lv 19′s so this could be done for more levels of twinking- I’ve seen lv 59′s and no doubt with Wrath there’s going to be 69′s now..
At anyrate the best would most likely, be a Spider, with the web skill, even if it’s not on a shorter CD that the 51 BM talent will give it, it’s a dangerous skill to any flag carrier, pair that up with the imp Concussive shot [even if it's been changed] and tbh you have a deadly combo.
I wouldn’t suggest cats either, I found that they’re usually the worst off in any BG my warlock is in, lowbie up till 70. As most have prowl on and are going about in combat, I can see the cat coming, target and fear it. Thus element of surprise is lost. Even with the loss of paranoia there’s still that zhfooom sound.
Moving onto Serpents and Windserpents, I would have to agree, for lower levels, a WS is just not what it was, [still worth it at higher levels tho if you really love them], but Serpents, the DoT can sometimes make or break, IE finish off a player before they have a chance to get healed. It may be small but sometimes that’s all that’s needed. Plus it is a nice sight and change from all the cats I see. Named cat.
Also don’t look over Screech/Demorilizing Screech. Yes Owls get snatched but at later levels it’s sketchy at best, might still work for lower levels but at anyrate. If there’s alot of melee on your flag carrier, Screech can possibly save them, given the fact it can down ap, even slightly, any chance of survivability is better than nothing imo.
I’d also have to, offhandedly, throw in Ravagers too, if you don’t like Hyena’s, Ravagers get a racial the same nearly, don’t they? A speed reduction I mean.
I’d have to say I don’t think a Crocolisk would really do well in a PVP situation with Bad Attitude, but Bears and Crabs would- the Swipe and Pin abilities of theres.
Edit: I pulled a goof oops- confused Beast Mastery with Longevity. /doh
“So long as you don’t mind slaughtering the children and then enslaving the mother, you should be fine.”
Win.
Mania,
Not to be rude or anything but I tamed Hecklefang the Snarler. He’s not level 19 but 17 I think he’s a good choice he levels fast and is like pink and purple.
Woot! me likey pvp… Okay that’s out of my system.. Okay for the choices… Ravagers are pally killers, pure and simple. They have a mini-intimidate that only has a 40 sec cooldown, useful in dozens of other ways, but man is it fun to pop that on a pally right before you know he’s going to bubble(and they all bubble at about the same time/health lvl, generally 15-20%) and then burn him down before he can do anything about it.I have tears of joy just typing about it….
Hyenas, no seriously Hyenas. Tendon Rip anyone? Wait, you mean I can get the equivalent of a concussive shot every 20 seconds, without having to use said shot?(or for that matter get to range to use said shot) I think I love it, in fact my current 19 twink uses a hyena for this very reason.I have been toying with the idea of switching my mains pvp pet to a hyena because of the success of my twinks pet.(Snort the Heckler, or as I call him, “Tickledpink”) Okay web on spiders is pretty cool also, I haven’t tried it at 19 tho, so I hate to comment too strongly on it.
Featherkitty, you are thinking of Snort the Heckler — a rare hyena who is indeed level 17 and also purple, as you describe. :>
Hecklefang Snarlers are one of three types of Hecklefang hyena in the Barrens: Hecklefang Hyena (15-16), Hecklefang Snarler (18-19) and Hecklefang Stalker (22-23). All of them are pretty common and yellow-brown.
Kinda off topic, but has anyone tried pvp with a moth? I rolled a new hunter on a different server last week and picked up the only low level tamable one and I’m fairly impressed at it’s damage output in pve… Course I don’t expect it to be as useful soloing as an ape…
Level 19 Twink Pets « Chronicles of a World of Warcraft Hunter - December 25th, 2008 @ 5:18 am UTC
[...] Level 19 Twink Pets I’ve noticed Mania has a great post detailing the options for your level 19 twink pet, so head on over. [...]
“Thank goodness”? *snort* Twinks are one of the worst elements of the worst part of WoW.
A strong pet in PvP that you forgot is the ravager. There are both varieties available on Azuremyst and Bloodmyst Isles. Ravage is quite fun against casters, interrupting the ever so annoying fear.
My twinking experience was with a bat (Ressan the Needler, named MightyErebus, eh), in the 29 bracket. While his skills wasn’t anything to cheer about, he had one strength; his wings.
As you may know, bats are big. No, not just big, they’re gigantique! I’ve tried a many times to throw my bat in my opponents face, only to have him go all confused, and maybe even fleeing.
Fun times.
Might want to add, this was before 3.0.X, and sorry for my horrible engrish. Woop.
I know this is a late post, but my 2 cents worth:
At level 19, no pet has talents yet so they are all basically what you tame them to be. As far as appearance, anyone who is making a twink that will be worth anything has a main and hopefull has a clue about this site ;P, and they will plan ahead of time what pet they want, and for what reasons. Those that want a rare or unique skinned level 13 pet will go tame it, period.
My 19 twink hunter is NE and has the red lynx from Eversong, a spider and an owl. All of these were gotten pre-3.0 and honestly I’ve played him in very limited spurts since the patch or expansion (hmmm…maybe I should tonight lol). The one painful part of a 19 twink is the often times 10-15 minutes of down time waiting in the queue, but that’s another thread all together.
As a NE with a cat POST 3.0, I can tell you that on DEFENSE it really is nice to set a trap at the flag, set your cat on prowl/aggressive and meld in to a corner. Yes, sometimes you and/or the cat are spotted, but often times you’ll see the level 15 warrior rushing blindly towards what looks like an unguarded flag and BAM, you’ve got a triple jump on him…helps equalize the mail aspect and usually, with some skill, you can take him down. Spiders are similarly nice if you leave them on ‘stay’ in the small room and wait for the same scenario to happen…again, easy pickings often times. I leveled with all three, and they are all level 19 (not as easy as it sounds to do lol). The owl I have not tried post 3.0 but the thing I liked about it was the flying aspect…it just distracts people. I would imagine that a gnome with a bat attacking it can’t see much at all lol!!
But I digress…
Not having tried them yet at this level, I would still recommend a hyena or spider, for the same reasons as the poster above. The one thing about spiders is the fact that for some people, they are just creepy…real or pixelated…and that works to your advantage. Both have movement decreasing abilities that can really work wonders in WSG, either offensively or defensively. Cats put out the dps, as do ravagers and raptors, but in the big picture, not much else. I, personally, prefer a pet that adds something besides straight damage to the mix because IMO that gives the hunter the added advantage he may need against that pesky roque that caught you by suprise that you want to distance yourself from.
I´m surprised the scorpid is not mentioned? I find it to be a great pvp pet because the poision keeps rogues from stealthing (in my BG Rogues are the most popular class) and since the scorpid reapplies the poision so quickly it works great on dispellers who keep dispelling it only to have it reapplied… Also they may dispell it instead of some other debuff which is hurting them more. All of this and the stam and armor of a scorpid is high so they are not easily focused killed.
My three pets for my 19 twink are
Scorpid Sarkoth http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/mobs/mob_sarkoth.html
Cat Echeyakee http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/mobs/mob_echeyakee.html
(as alliance on a PVP server this guy was not easy to get)
Hyena Snort the Heckler http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/mobs/mob_snorttheheckler.html
All these are levle 19, because I planned ahead and leveld the pets as i leveled my twink, and i saved enough exp to be able to correct some mistakes… The hyena is a new addition, prior to Wotlk I used a boar instead, because that was the clear choice for the 19 bracket twink, but now its useless.
Also, to post 20 above, Rilgon— If you enjoy PVP at all and haven#t tried twinking, you really should before you knock it. First the process of planning your twink I find quite fun. You have to plan wahat gear you want when you can get it without getting too much exp, how you can enchant it (some of the enchants are tricky to apply) learn fishing, work with a friend for boosting multiple runs for that rare drop etc… then once you finally have made the twink you get to do twink pvp… head to head twink pvp is imho some of the very best pvp in wow. Most twinkers know their class very well and make good opponents. The fights often last a lot longer than lvl70 or now lvl 80 fights. Yes there are those twinks who give the rest a bad name and just grief non-twinks I share your anger at them, but fighting twink v twink is great fun. Lvl 19 premade twink v twink wsg is simply a blast
I have to aggre with Hoss about the Scorpid as when my twink was in the 10-19 breaket she used the mace witch applied the poision and that messes up lots of people who GY camp and they freeked out why their health was burning after i had died then resed and comeback kicking. but other than maby saying DoTs are always good anti-rogue wepons i can’t help as my twink is a rogue (wasn’t atully twinked but took out most other twinks)
I actually made a lvl 19 twink a while back and it seemed to me (things may have changed now) that the Elder Mountian Boar lvl 17-19 : Loch Modan, was a very good choice for a BG pet. If I remember correctly they have a charge ablility that also stuns a target for 3-4 secs, is this not true anymore? I curious becuase when I made my twink it was on a friends account and now that I have my Account on again I am making a new Twink. I would like to get a good pet again and that specific boar was the only boar that had the charge/stun ability. Please let me know.
I think I found my answer:
Charge
1 rank
Your pet charges an enemy, immobilizing the target for 1 sec, and increasing the pet’s melee attack power by 25% for its next attack.
So this isnt a 3-4 second stun but for those flag runners that are off in the distance that you cant catch letting loose your Boar will chargen when in range and allow you to catch up with a concusion shot. This is a winner in my book.
Im thinking of making a hunter twink at 19, im thinking of getting a spider, hyena and a scorpid i think, is there somethin i should have instead of a scorpid??
I would go for a boar, they have good xp and deal good dmg. Plus at lvl 16-17, you can go to Lock Modan and get the Elder Mountain Boar. If you read above boars get charge, and he Elder Mountain Boar has rank 2 Charge and Rank 2 or 3 Gorge. I think that will be far better than the scorpid when trying to chase down Flag runners.
Good guide =)
Although, i fell for the ravager, from azuremyst isle.
Good damage, and a cheeky little stun, is good for defence, and casters (polly + fears especially) :)
The boar won’t work like it used to in 19 bracket. Charge is no longer a boar skill and is bought in the pet talent trees. You get your first pet skill point @ 20. Seriously go with spider or hyena. The only skills you’ll have on pets @ 19 are ones they come with.
hey i got a guy namedMazzranache hes in mulgore serch him up hes like a pink flamingo its the backround of the website he is a good pet i named him flamingo look it up
Finally, we have crabs — or possibly crab. Crabs’ family skill “in” Pin, an interesting channeled attack that immobilizes the target for 4 seconds.
