A List of Level 80 Pets
I was planning a different post for today, but then I got this e-mail from BRK:
Subject: I demand a post!
Body:
“So your friends are busting on you for bringing a level 75 gorilla to heroic Culling of Stratholme, and you’ve been telling them there are no level 80 Ferocity or Cunning pets to be had in Northrend. You lose! Here’s a simple list of easily tamable, level 80 DPS-machines that you could easily bring to your next heroic.”/list begins here
Thank you, Mania!
And when BRK demands, I deliver! Or more accurately, when BRK bothers to ask nicely and says ‘thank you’, and my post was pretty boring anyway, I deliver. *grin*
I’m also going to expand his list out a bit and cover all three trees, plus some pets that may not be easily tameable for everyone.
Oh, and while I’m here, a short disclaimer: I may well be missing some pets, and I may have inaccurate info on others. This soon after an expansion, a lot of creature data is still in flux. It’s also quite possible that Blizzard will add more high-level pets in the next content patch. So if you see an error here, or if you know of a pet that should be listed here but isn’t, please drop me a note and let me know! And if you are reading this in the future, be aware that things may have changed!
Cunning
There’s not a lot of high-level Cunning pets. The only level 80 is the Sunreaver Dragonhawk, a pretty red dragonhawk that you can find hanging out next to Skymaster Baeric, the flight master at Sunreaver’s Command in Crystalsong Forest. Despite the fact that these guys appear to be taxi mounts, they can be tamed by both Horde and Alliance. (I don’t think there is any way for Horde to earn rep with the Sunreavers yet, but if you have then you may need to temporarily set yourself At War with the Sunreavers for the tame.)
Aside from the Sunreaver Dragonhawks, the next-highest Cunning pet is only level 78 — the lovely Goretalon Matriarch from Sholazar Basin.
You can also use Petopia’s Advanced Search to look at a list of level 76+ Cunning pets.
Ferocity
The Ferocity tree does rather better for level 80 pets, although unless you want to go after a boss you are limited to worgs.
The Storm Peaks contains a number of level 80 white worgs, plus one white/grey color-changer. Cavedweller Worgs will shift between two colors — white and grey — whenever they appear. The other Storm Peaks worgs — Frostworgs and Oloh — are associated with the Sons of Hodir. I know they can be tamed before you start the Sons of Hodir quests (because I am currently hostile to the Sons), but I’m not sure about afterwards — again, you may need to temporarily set yourself At War for the tame.
(The Frostworg Denmother is another white Sons of Hodir worg. She could previously be tamed, but apparently this is no longer the case. The Denmother is a quest-giver, and retained her ability to give and complete quests after she was tamed. Probably not intended behavior!)
If you don’t mind braving a heroic instance, you can also tame a level 80 Savage Worg from Heroic Utgarde Keep. These wolves are color-changers — they shift between black and brown. (You can tame these worgs from non-Heroic Utgarde too, of course, but they won’t be level 80!)
And for the very brave, you can also tame King Dred, a devilsaur boss from Drak’Tharon Keep.
The highest level non-worg non-boss Ferocity pet is level 78: the Sapphire Hive Queen from Sholazar Basin.
You can also use Petopia’s Advanced Search to look at a list of level 76+ Ferocity pets.
Tenacity
The Tenacity tree has the most interesting pets available to level 80, although to be fair that is the result of what is probably a bug.
First off, we have the three ‘crocolisk’ spirits from Sholazar Basin: the Spirit of Ha-Khalan (a ghostly crocolisk), the Spirit of Atha (a ghostly hydra) and the Spirit of Koosu (a green slime). Despite their looks, all three of these creatures truly believe that they are crocolisks, with a crocolisk’s diet and skills. In order to tame these guys, you’ll need someone (possibly yourself) who is on the Oracles daily quest “A Cleansing Song” to summon them for you.
In addition, there are three different level 80 jormungar available in the Storm Peaks: Ravenous Jormungar, Snowdrift Jormungar, and Infesting Jormungar.
If you don’t mind dropping down to level 79 pets, you can also tame a number of rhinos, including the Ice Steppe Bull and Ice Steppe Rhino, and the adorable Romping Rhino. Horde hunters may also want to try their hand at taming Snorts, a level 79 armored boar from the Alliance outpost of Frosthold.
You can also use Petopia’s Advanced Search to look at a list of level 76+ Tenacity pets.

Great list Mania!
During the Sons of Hodir rep grind, you get a quest called Feeding Arngrim. This quest calls for you to use an item on the Roaming Jormungar near the Sons of Hodir area. When used, the item turns the worm semi-transparent, but it stays a beast, which means… tameable!
I would post a screenshot but currently I am 50/21, so my semi-transparent worm is stuck in the stable. Very unique look, though.
Ooh! I’d love to see a pic of that, Cauthon! But since you’re not spec’d for it … anyone else tame the semi-transparent worm?
lol Funny Big Red Kitty
Mania –
I hadn’t done my daily yet today, so I tamed one to get some pics for ya:

Oh, and as I’ve been doing the quest with the ghostly worm, I’ve discovered something interesting:
Arngrim WILL try to eat your worm, lol. It doesn’t do anything, but he ran right up to my worm and did the ‘eating’ animation.
I’ve discovered similar weird behaviors with those Ice Steppe Rhinos up near the blue proto drakes in the Foot Steppes. After taming one, one of the drakes swooped down and fired his breath on my rhino until it was ‘dead’. (It did the death animation and laid like a corpse at full health. It wouldn’t do anything else, even after dismissing/resummoning, until I relogged.)
Nirvana: Thanks so much! That’s a neat worm!
Nice catch!
Great work on finding the worm! Here’s hoping it won’t be nerfed like the ghost wolf :)
So the ghost worm and other transparent pets stay transparent? Even if they take away the Hydra and slime, a ghostly croc might still be fun.
yay! Ghost pets for everyone!
Oooooh…did someone say…ghost worm???
I’ve kind of wanted a fuzzy worm pet…I really like the Northrend furry worm model, I was just really bored with their coloring. And I really need a high level tank pet for the future. Now I’ve got to get leveled up and try to tame a ghost worm!!!
oooooh, i saw a slime pet the other day and just thoguht it was a croc with a costume type of buff put on it… i may have to get a slime…
I tamed the Sapphire Hive queen not too long ago and it’s now 80. It’s a HUGE pet and I love it. Mine is currently named ‘TranqThis’ but I will be changing it. Now, if there was a way to change the coloration of your pets, I’d make it green with reddish highlights and the name would truly fight then. :)
Fit*. Wow I need to wake up more before I start typing in the morning.
Are you sure that the boss is tame-able? I ask because it would take a priest’s assistance and time to help with his fear.
The most interesting thing about that list is how short it is. Consider that more than half the pet families had a level 70 version in BC. I guess that’s their trade-off with there being no more loyalty levels.
Well, the number of families expanded quite a bit, so half is rather more than it used to be. :> But keep in mind that we saw a number of families get their level 70 members in content patches, and we haven’t had any of those yet. I’m sure they’ll come.
I’m still pretty sure there was more than 5 level 70 families at BC release :) Also, 2 of those are only open to BM’s with the 51-pointer, so SV and MM only have 1 choice of family in each tree. I’m sure more will come as well tho.
I LIKE CHEESE!
NO
NO HUHURAN PETS
dear god no please /sob
(although yeah, I use the Sapphire Hive Queen myself, and she’s named Ayamiss. :3)
Just to inform you mania.
Like all Heroic Bosses King Dred is just a Level 82 ELite and not a ?? BOSS
And I forgot to tell you that only the Normal Version which is level 75 ELite can currently be tamed.
Thanks, Zubasa — I’ll get that updated.
I got a ghost worm!
You don’t need to be level 80 to tame one of them, or even have your rep grinded up with Sons of Hodir. You just need to find someone else who has the rep grinded up already and can get the daily quest, and is willing to let you tag along while they do it.
I managed to tame my see through worm with the help of a guildie. He picked up the “Feeding Argrim” daily quest, and then I followed him around (since I don’t have the rep yet with them to do it myself). There are level 79-80 worms in the area. He targeted one of the level 79 worms (since my hunter is only level 79), and I waited for it to become ghostly. After it became see-thru, I laid down a trap and tame with no problems.
are the spirit wolves near the ruins in crystalsong forest tamable? they hang out with the ghostly night elves, also found in the ruins.
im updating this post,
the cool sholozar quest mobs that think they are crocolisk’s are no longer tamable.
Sadly the ghost worm has lost his ghostly aura.
king dred from Hdtk is lvl 82 and cannot be tamed because you cant tame anything higher lvl then you are.
BUUUUUT, I have some good news also.
There are green and purple raptors in dtk that are tamable and lvl 80-81.
so if they all spawn lvl 81 your s.o.l but most likely they wont.
heres a link to a same skin raptor.(wasnt a screen shot of the one from dtk)
