Mania Hits Level 35 IRL

Today is my birthday. I am 35 years old. If I were a tree I’d have many, many rings!

My husband bought me a new desktop computer as a combined birthday/Christmas present, largely because my laptop was having significant trouble dealing with the upgraded Wrath of the Lich King graphics. (You may or may not remember that I’ve been using my laptop as my main and only machine since my desktop blew up earlier this year.)

The laptop has a tendency to overheat anyway, and even after turning all the settings all the way down, plus propping the laptop up on a wire stand and aiming a desk fan at it, it still just shuts down completely once or twice a day. Inconvenient when I am fighting, and downright rude when I am trading. (And the fan makes it hard to hear the game, not to mention the phone.)

The graphics card I had from my old desktop machine is still a very nice card (it’s a GeForce 7800GT) and we always have hard drives and network cards and whatnot lying around, so my birthday present was a fairly inexpensive barebones box. (And it came with Windows XP! Hooray!) I spent much of last night setting it up, but I still have a ways to go before I am completely operational. I’m still missing most of my development environment, for instance.

I can say right now, though, that even Undercity looks absolutely fabulous with a real video card and all the settings turned up. It makes a huge difference.

  14. My laptop also has heat problems – it seems that one of the first things sacrificed to make the laptop smaller is the cooling. I’ve found that one of those $20 laptop cooling pads (basically a lap-desk with some fans in it) solves the problem, and I don’t get random shutdowns any more. Not as useful if you’re using the desktop now, but good for trips and such.

  17. Happy Birthday Mania!!! Today is also my birthday. I’m 24 today. =)

    (Please don’t hate me but I didn’t know anywhere else to post this.)

    I recently hit 72 on my horde hunter Knarcus, and tamed an Arctic Grizzly from Dragonblight. All was well, tanked like a charm..until I named him. Seemed soon as he had a name, he stopped charging, stopped intervening and stopped taunting. Anyone had similar issues or is it just me??

  20. a very pleasant birthday to ya dear Mania. I can barely recall back to 35. In fact, I probably just won’t try. I too am going to have to break down and buy another baseline box to build up. My last one finally bit the dust, bought a box from a friend that was WAY less powerful, though not as bad as playing on my macbook pro. I need to start gathering the parts and build me another.

    Northrend is an amazing place in full out graphics. stunning work.

  30. Gratz! I myself turn 32 this coming Wed Dec 10th. Any horde on blackhand that an kindly donate for me a flying mount would be most loved. Ive been playing this game since beta 2 and never had more then 3 k gold. I need money tips.
