Name That Pet: A New World Order
Patch 3.0, with its very pleasant most-pets-are-really-pretty-good changes plus five new pet families, brought a flood of new pets. And the Wrath of the Lich King expansion later this week is going to add another 115 or so tameable pets, including two completely new families and a whole bunch of completely new pet looks.
All these new choices — plus the extra stable slots we have now — mean that lots and lots of hunters are picking up new pets. And those pets need names. And that means another round of Name That Pet! But … I’m having some problems with the Name That Pet feature.
I’m getting so many requests now that the schedule for Name That Pet posts is backed up into December, and that’s after stacking multiple pets in each post (which is something I’d rather avoid — I prefer to focus each post on a single pet, or at the very least a single hunter). And sometimes I really feel like the Name That Pet posts are flooding out the rest of the content on the blog … I really do enjoy them, but running one Name That Pet a day might be a bit much for me.
So after thinking about it rather a lot this past week, I’ve decided to make some changes in how I handle Name That Pet requests:
- I’ve added a Name That Pet forum to the Arcania forums specifically for these requests.
- If you are comfortable doing your own posting and picture linking there, I encourage you to post your own requests in the forum. (Just make sure to read the instructions first.)
- If you aren’t comfortable with the posting — and in particular with posting images, since the forum requires you to host your own images — you can continue to e-mail your requests directly to me and I will post them there on your behalf.
- And by the way, I created a new e-mail address — namethatpet@maniasarcania.com — so I can keep track of the requests better. I’ve lost too many in the past few weeks through my own disorganizational skills.
- Once a week or so I will choose some of the best requests (with the coolest stories or cutest screenshots or what have you) and spotlight them on the blog, with links to the other requests as well.
My hope is that this will let me post the requests without a six week backlog and also help drive suggestions to all the requests without flooding the blog. But we’ll see how it goes for awhile, and if this process isn’t working to get your pets named, then we’ll try something else.

I hate to say it, but I breathed a sigh of relief when I read this. While the Name That Pet thing can be interesting, it’s really not the main reason I subscribed to the blog and I was starting to feel a little disappointed every time I saw there was a new post and then realised it was naming somebody’s pet for them again.
That’s a good change. People can get their requests out right away without having them sit in your inbox getting backlogged ;) I actually thought of doing a name request myself, but I figured you’d have a month or more backlog working up and that I’d find a name on my own before the request was posted here :P

This will be a nice change. Thank you Mania. Though I have been jumping in there with names, actually pretty sad names at that, this is much better.
Does this mean that i have to re-request my “Name that Pet” for my poor nameless pet?

Ah that’s perfectly fine Mania *nods* I’ll be sending Mazeku’s new pet request to that E-mail now for you. I don’t mind a wait, and I’ve had that poor Wolf for ages xD The sucker needs a name eventually :P
You’re probably going to be swarmed and swamped with some many requests >> I just hope my stories help even out some of those crazy requests you get :P
I think that sounds like a great idea – I can only imagine how many pet images you must get! Plus it’ll be fun to have one place to go just to look at all the hunter pets.
I know what you mean about so much to do – I’d really thought to have posted so many more things and I have stacks of screenshots! Suddenly it’s only 48 hrs til Wrath! Must get to grocery store tomorrow and stock up on as many munchies as I can carry!
