Name That Pet: Gorilla Gorilla (Gorilla)

Name That Pet: Adams & GorillaSpeaking of popular new pets, there’s the gorilla. And you can’t blame them for enjoying their new-found popularity — what pet doesn’t deserve a turn in the limelight?

Today we have three gorilla-owners looking for the perfect name for their new furry friend. First up is Adams, a pun-loving dwarven hunter. Adams writes:

I’d like some assistance in naming a Gorilla I happened accross. My hunter’s name is Adams. He has had a variety of pets.

Bear – Grizzly
Boar – Gristly
Raptor – Grisly
Cat – Ansel
Wolf – Sam
Devilsaur – Quincy
Worm – Abigail

I tend to like puns, but I also like names that look right as names. I chose all my pet names because they looked funny with “Adam’s Pet” underneath. I am looking for suggestions for my hominid friend. Thank you.

I have to say, I really like the cat named Ansel and the worm named Abigail. I’m not sure we can come up with something as good for this gorilla, but we’ll give it a try!

Name That Pet: Yáena & GorillaNext up is a Draenei hunter named Yáena. Yáena writes:

For 4 years I’ve spawned a countless amount of hunters, which leads to a countless amount of pets. All of them with more or less original names. This is the first time I’ve asked for help, heh. :)

Anyways. The hunter in subject is a lvl 30-and-something draenei called Yáena. After almost 20 levels of huntin’ around with a wind serpent, I’ve decided to give her a gorilla, with their new 1337-ish Thunderstomp and all. Her other pet is, as said before, a blue/black windserpent from WC. His name is Kaizar.

I don’t RP, so I have no idea what kind of draenei Yáena is, but I mainly play solo on her. For some reason, she’s never been to any instance. Always been busy questing and hoofing around, and always nobody in the LFM. (Besides that, I hate PuGs with all my heart.) That’s why the gorilla would fit perfectly.

There’s no fancy taming story either, also because I don’t RP, and the gorilla wasn’t rare or hard to find. Let’s just imagine it happened it a mighty epic way.

But while I can’t tell you any fun stuff about either the draenei or the taming, I can certainly tell you what kind of name I’m after.

First of all: No silly names. Silly names are all fun and joy, but I just can’t hunt around with a monkey called BananaOmNomNom or something like that. And no ‘white’ names (like Snowfall, for instance), since I plan getting a black monkey at lvl 37. A black ape called Snowfall is stupid. >.< No DonkeyKongs either, I wanna keep everything Mario out of this.

Now, what I do want is a name that sound somewhat draenei'ish, or something you could imagine a draenei calling her monkey. The longer, the better, too, since long names makes it look more fancy. And something that makes a plain ol' gorilla stand out :)

And he's male.

I love a hunter who knows her mind! Okay, we’ll do our best with this one and I’m sure we can come up with something that fits.

Name That Pet: Allarr & GorillaLast but not least we have Allarr, a night elf hunter with a red gorilla. Allarr writes:

My character’s name is Allarr, and I’ve been playing on him for more than three years now. I recently tamed a gorilla, as per BRK’s strong suggestion, to help me level once Wrath hits the street.

Allarr has gone though lots of pets, and the creation of two extra stable slots literally made me /dance! I play on a normal server, don’t RP, and mostly raid and do instances with my guild (the Angry Penguins!)

I would generally go for a funny name, but I love Warcraft lore, all forms of mythology and
fiction, as well. For an example of what I’m after, I have a wasp named Rumblebee and grinned for a good while when someone in my guild suggested it. So please, help me name my beautiful red gorilladin*!

We hear you loud and clear! Okay, my loyal legion of naming maniacs — what’ve we got for these gorillas?

@ All, George is a “curious” name for a gorilla.

@ Adam, you’ve also Got John “Adams” from the quincy /abigail era of political history. Or maybe a female named “Eve” to go with Adam.

@ Others, Sorry, but I’ve never been good at “lore” type or Racial sounding names.

    @ Adams

For your new gorilla, I suggest the names: Apple (as in “Adam’s Apple”), Eve (as in “Adam and Eve” or “Adam’s Eve”), Wednesday, Pugsley, Fester, or Lurch (all names from the tv show “The Addams Family”).

    @ Yáena

The Draenei language (and accent), I believe is very similar to the languages of the Ukraine, Russia, and Eastern Europe. For your new pet, I suggest either of the following names: Boris or Borislav, Ivan or Ivanovich, Kobach, Vladimir, Yakov, or Smirnoff.

    @ Allarr

How about the name: BananaOmNomNom (as mentioned in Yáena’s post)? — might have to use a shortened version however.

  6. Boudreaux - November 8th, 2008 @ 3:29 am UTC

    I have a few ideas..
    For Yaena –
Czernobog – I believe that’s the spelling, though Czernozog works too. It’s a slavic diety of, well basically death or murder. Translation is mostly thought to be “black god”.I figured that might work for a black gorilla. Also Zhernoboh.
Tovarishch or Tovarich – literally means friend or ally
    For Allar -
    Oohoohthis,Mybanana,Drunkenmonkey,Thumper,Allthumbs,Handsforfeet,Smarterthanu,or Nitpicker

  7. Dvorkin - November 8th, 2008 @ 3:32 am UTC

The Draenei language (and accent), I believe is very similar to the languages of the Ukraine, Russia, and Eastern Europe.

Eastern Europe – may be, but definitely not Russian/Ukranian (I’m Russian myself). Looks more like Estonian to me.

In any case, Yáena, if you look for some Draenei-sounding name, you can just pick up one from the list of words used already in game: Draenie language

  8. Teridom - November 8th, 2008 @ 3:35 am UTC

I named my grey gorilla Oomingmak – means “the bearded one” in native Alaskan.
On the grey in particular (and the red somewhat as well) the gorilla’s beard really stand out. Plus, Oomingmak just… sounds gorilla-ish to me :D

  9. Jayhawk - November 8th, 2008 @ 3:59 am UTC

As for Adam, there’s an intriguing alternative to Eve, i.e. Lilith. According to Jewish lore, she was Adam’s wife before god created Eve.

Draenei names I tend to figure out using Indian name guides, as most of these names actually mean something and sound nice you can get some real good ones there. The most obvious one for a gorilla would be Hanuman, the monkey god.

On a silly level, Nanabanana might work…

  10. Dvorkin - November 8th, 2008 @ 4:07 am UTC

Oh, by the way, Smirnoff is not a Russian name (the correct spelling is Smirnov). Smirnoff is vodka (and, besides, this is trademark, so it technically not legal name by Blizzard rules).

  11. Sgt. Thorondil - November 8th, 2008 @ 6:58 am UTC

    KingKong,
    or just Kong.
Two highly unoriginal names for a Gorilla, but these are surprisingly unused, and everyone will know/laugh/hug eachother/dance/slap their legs in hilarity at the reference!

The only person on my server with a Gorilla called Kong is.. me!

  12. Rottingham - November 8th, 2008 @ 7:19 am UTC

    Bubba!

  13. Doli - November 8th, 2008 @ 7:45 am UTC

I named my red-orange gorilla “Tang”. I’ve also had a gorilla in the past named “Zeus”. Thunder god and all. Love my gorilla. Good luck!

  14. Rahthiel - November 8th, 2008 @ 9:05 am UTC

    MojoJojo ftw!

  15. Emowin - November 8th, 2008 @ 9:42 am UTC

Every one seamed to remember most of the Adams family but forgot some of the obscure adamses from the movies including Flora and Fauna the twins, Pubert the baby adams, Thing the hand, It the hairy guy, and What the baby of It and his wife. And don’t forget Mama adanms.

As for the other two i had a gorilla named Rock, played with the nmae Ooglie or Oogly for a little while. Or maybe Max or Maximum. Ummm think i’m all out now, good luck.

  16. Zeet - November 8th, 2008 @ 9:44 am UTC

I couldn’t resist: I have a gorilla called Tarzan. Jane wouldn’t be too bad either.

  17. Zeet - November 8th, 2008 @ 9:47 am UTC

Sorry. Poor memory. I had to call her Jane because Tarzan is a reserved name

  18. corwyn - November 8th, 2008 @ 10:18 am UTC

    Gorizzaly.

    After the Movie “Grizzly Adams”

  19. BloodGod22 - November 8th, 2008 @ 10:53 am UTC

    How abount PRIMAL or BaBOOM?

  20. The Wild One - November 8th, 2008 @ 12:34 pm UTC

I named my gorilla Itsinzi. It’s Rwandan for Victory.

  21. Thalestris - November 8th, 2008 @ 1:38 pm UTC

Going with an African-inspired “jungle” theme for the names:

    Kejana
    Zawadi
    Jorayk
    Koundu
    Tunuka
    Bahati
    Kisagani
    Mbuji
    Isoke (means hairy, teehee)
    Tafari (awe-inspiring)

  22. Dave - November 8th, 2008 @ 2:54 pm UTC

I name all my pets after gods from various mythologies. Bast for my cat, Anubis (no, not Cerberus. Too obvious) for my core hound.

    My gorilla was named Hanuman.

  23. Korrigann - November 8th, 2008 @ 3:03 pm UTC

The first name I wanted to pick for my gorilla was MrRight, but for some reason it wouldn’t let me have it. I thought it would be funny to see a hairy gorilla with a smexy blood elf honey.

But then I settled on an even better name: BrightEyes. Dr Zaius, ahoy!

  24. Sigrdrífa - November 8th, 2008 @ 5:50 pm UTC

whoa, I can’t believe no one said “Magilla” :) (or is Siggy just that old?).

Well, one of my toons just got a big monkey and is having the same problem, but we will get there. Granddaughter said Bananahead. LOL, but no.

    Good luck.

  25. Rottingham - November 8th, 2008 @ 6:12 pm UTC

    I vote Bubba, HubbaBubba, MightyJoe,or MojoJojo(Nice one, Rahthiel) :)

  26. Allarr - November 8th, 2008 @ 8:29 pm UTC

Thundaga! I like it, good suggestion Makoes!

And thank you for posting this Mania.

I’m away from WoW for the weekend (on a different computer now) but once I get back, I’ll name him and get a screenshot to you.

  27. Adams - November 8th, 2008 @ 10:02 pm UTC

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have decided to name him Gorillazy, a slight variation of one of the suggestions.

So if you are on lightbringer, you may see “Gorillazy, Adam’s Pet”.

  28. Makoes - November 8th, 2008 @ 10:12 pm UTC

Glad I could be of help :D

  29. Guthorm - November 9th, 2008 @ 1:10 am UTC

    for adams, grizly? lol

  30. Seveil - November 9th, 2008 @ 7:44 am UTC

    Yáena:
    Rhavian
    Toravion
    Anathon
    Halieth
    Voralloc
    Ketalaryn
No actual meaning, just bodged-together syllables :)

    Allarr:
Brutus. Can’t think of anything else at the moment.

  31. cloudmonkey - November 9th, 2008 @ 12:37 pm UTC

With all the mentions of Addams Family characters for the dwarven hunter Adams, I can’t believe no one has mentioned Gorgo, the gorilla who followed Pugsley home from the circus.

And no one has mentioned Gruesome, the gorilla whose wife briefly adopted Bugs Bunny.

  32. Rancidmilkmonkey - November 9th, 2008 @ 3:33 pm UTC

For Adams, how about naming him Patch, Douglas or Bryan? Patch or Douglas will get the most laughs, but if you’ve never read “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” (blasphemy!) be prepared for some really odd comments and in-jokes.

  33. Doomtrain - November 9th, 2008 @ 3:36 pm UTC

    Fustercluck.

  34. Rancidmilkmonkey - November 9th, 2008 @ 3:38 pm UTC

P.S. I’ve been reading Petopia and your blog for several months now. I’ve been playing WOW for a little les than a year now and was lucky enough to stumble across your site pretty early on (my dwarf hunter main had just started exploring Loch Modan). Both have been invaluable assets to me as a player and a hunter. I am sure I speak for many other regular readers who never post when I say that all the work you do is greatly appreciated.

  35. Molocai - November 10th, 2008 @ 4:24 pm UTC

I’ve always liked to name my gorilla’s with smart names, for instance
    Edison
    Eistein
    DaVinci
    Oxford

  36. Urthona - November 10th, 2008 @ 7:32 pm UTC

    Adams – Gomez
    Yáena – Human
    Allarr – Lurkur

  37. Dvorkin - November 10th, 2008 @ 9:00 pm UTC

Moocai: Was “Einstein” misspelled on purpose, or it was just a typo? ;)

P.S. Sorry for not really contributing to the suggestions – I’m here mostly to steal a name for my own gorilla (for my Tauren alt). So far, I like BaBOOM and Ooglie (and Einstein look good as well), although I may end up with something like TAHK (since hunter’s name Kpoxa should be read as if spelled in Cyrillic letters, so need a matching name for his pet). Don’t think this name will be good to these 3 gorillas we’re discussing, though.

  38. Maree - November 11th, 2008 @ 1:26 am UTC

    Hey, Yáena’s “owner” here :>
I think I’ll go with Niabi’s suggestion Vladimir.
Thanks to everybody for helping; I personally find gorillas some of the hardests pets to name ^^’.

  39. j - November 11th, 2008 @ 9:48 am UTC

    Sam
    *Adams Pet*

  40. Tygamoon - November 11th, 2008 @ 1:04 pm UTC

I love naming my pets in a clever or silly way. On my BM hunter Ive used ‘Stinkyfinger’. Long ago (about a year before BC came out)I knew a hunter that used one. His was named ‘Whoflungpoo’. Ive given some thought of poaching that one for my MM hunter and her Gorilla. Ive always loved that name! I know these weren’t really along the lines of what was being looked for but I’m sure someone would like em.

  41. Niabi - November 11th, 2008 @ 1:22 pm UTC

    @ Yáena

Woot! I am honored to hear that you chose one of my name suggestions!

Congrats to you and Vladimir and thank you :-)

  42. Timmy - November 11th, 2008 @ 1:42 pm UTC

Personally I think the name Bobo is a good one for a gorilla.

  43. Joe - November 11th, 2008 @ 7:50 pm UTC

I named my gorilla Thunderfist that’ll be my suggestion :-)

  44. Boothy - November 13th, 2008 @ 9:26 am UTC

    Right turn, Clyde.

  45. Elvenlegend - November 18th, 2008 @ 12:40 pm UTC

I got a whit gorilla first and named him Thor because hes big and uses thunderstomp (thor is a god of thunder), then i got a black gorilla and named him Knuckles because gorillas obviously walk on there knuckles, and now that im high enough i finally tamed my silver gorilla and named him Pounds ( he pounds his chest, pounds the ground for thunderstomp, and not to forget weight a lot of pounds lol)

  46. Farseer Lolotea - November 19th, 2008 @ 2:26 am UTC

    For Adams:  Douglas.
    For Allarr:  Thumper.

  47. Kaei - November 29th, 2008 @ 4:01 am UTC

i named mine CodeMonkey after one of my facourite songs by Johnathon Coulton, annoyingly quite a popular name for gorillas that i’ve seen is KingKong, thers too many of them

  48. Ghostlyarrow - January 30th, 2009 @ 3:33 pm UTC

Stomper, Smasher, Crusher, or anything referencing the gorilla’s physical strengh.

  49. Bearknuckles - February 25th, 2009 @ 12:38 pm UTC

Adams gorilla could be called Gomez. I named my gorilla “Monsoon” after the wrestler. To be punny there is always “MyDreams” as in gorilla (girl of) my dreams. JoeYoung as in the movie Mighty Joe Young.

  50. Elderous - May 21st, 2009 @ 2:05 pm UTC

    names for ya:

    Urth
    Quag
    Optimus
    Zoe
    Gore

  51. Stellara - July 31st, 2009 @ 9:51 pm UTC

    i named my gorilla Tunuko

  52. Hrothgara - August 26th, 2009 @ 6:37 pm UTC

    Chango….Spanish for Gorilla

  53. Mironiz - September 1st, 2009 @ 3:26 pm UTC

I had my first gorilla and named it Gygax ( this was shortly after the passing of Gary, and only had one person comment on it) however.. I also had a silver partriarch which I named Striebro which is polish for Silver (i’m not polish). I wanted something fun & clever so I went to a translator website and found the name of the animal or its color to find a name. (sidenote: I also used this in naming a tauren, Býk (slavek for Bull)
A common thing I’ve seen is people not naming pets at all, just calling it SPIDER or GORILLA. Maybe they dont plan on keeping it long?

as for the names for this article?

the bear, Ant (may have to think about that one to figure it out)
the draenei pet? UShoru (too bad can only use letters cuz U’shoru is my original)
and the red gorilla?.. Rojo (just not Amy or Aimee or any variation)

  54. Wombatish - October 23rd, 2009 @ 3:38 pm UTC

    @Allarr

If you love BRK as much as I do (every time he says “Baby Mammoth” I can’t help but giggle, plus he sounds like my old raid leader), I think BRG, or BigRedGorilla (though I know I’d prefer the acronym, wtb spaces in pet names!) would be a nice fitting tribute.

  55. Emma - June 18th, 2010 @ 12:11 am UTC

Hi im just thinking of a name that you might like. How about StormPound,or King Kong.
