Name That Pet: Red, White and No Blue Devilsaurs

Name That Pet: Aranis & DevilsaurI thought I was all clever posting a red devilsaur and a white devilsaur the day after the US presidential election, but unfortunately there’s no blue devilsaur to round out the visual pun. Blizzard, we need a blue devilsaur!

Anyway, let’s get to the pets. First up is Aranis, a night elf with the guild Stalwart Heroes of Dark Iron. Aranis writes:

As we all know, the new patch [3.0.2 that is. - ed.] was like gods gift to hunters, since with Gorilladin (as BRK put it) and other fantastic upgrades to our pets it’s like we’re a whole new class! Of course, nothing enticed me more when it came to our upgrades in the patch then the aspect of Exotic pets. And lo and behold, Devilsaurs, the T-rex that anyone who has ever transversed Un’goro knows, is tamable and ours for the having!

Of course, it took me three hours and constant messages over the general chat of the area to get this white beauty of raw female power, but hey, it looks fantastic! But the name….that’s something I’m having trouble on. At first, I thought I would just do what I had done for my other pets and name her after one of my favorite shows or something of the like, but I’m stumped on what best fits my Devilsaur.

Overall, I’m wanting something that’s powerful, but not silly, and something that would make me proud for my guild members to go “That’s Aranis’s pet!”.

I love the fact that Aranis sees her devilsaur as a ‘beauty of raw female power’, in part because I’ve always seen her that way too. *grin*

Name That Pet: Thorondil & DevilsaurNext up, with the red devilsaur, is dwarven hunter Sergeant Thorondil from Dragonmaw (EU). Thorondil writes:

I tend not to Roleplay, though I have been known to occasionally make an alt on one of the servers, so I’ll just talk about my playstyle: My character is known by the people of Azeroth and Draenor as Sergeant Thorondil. He is a long-time veteran of WoW, was the guild-leader of the Defenders of Azeroth, and has seen about as much as can be seen!

Personally I’m not a hardcore gamer, I don’t have a full PvP set, or epic weapons, but I do have a lot of experience of the game, having played since 2005. I enjoy playing around in the game; collecting pets, pestering the Horde like a fruit-fly, doing one-man suicide runs through Orgrimmar and falling from ridiculous heights onto Halaa. I always try to be polite, even to the Horde (even if they’re unpolite back!) and I only gank other players if I’ve caught them ganking one of us.

I’d like a name that’s mythological, or one that relates to a TV-Series or a movie, preferably one that people will know. My other pets include a Core Hound called Cerberus (the 3-headed dog guarding Hades), a Chimaera called Bellerophon (the slayer of the Chimaera) and a Silithid called Trooper (from, of course, Starship Troopers). I’ve been toying with some names from various films, but I just can’t get the right one for my Devilsaur, and so I call upon other hunters for their help!

If you could help me choose a name, I’d be very grateful, and if you’re a Horde, and on the Dragonmaw (EU) server, please pop into Ironforge for some ale and an arrow or two!

I find it interesting that both today’s hunters often use TV shows to name their pets, but then I tend to use books and games and I suppose it’s the same basic idea. I’m just not very good with remembering TV character names (Dexter being an exception for obvious reasons). This leads to conversations like: “That chick, the military one, the one with the thing for the guy. You know, the one that was invaded by the evil slug-thing that turned out not to be evil.” (Bonus points if you can name the character.)

Anyway! (Sorry for the long aside.) So we’re looking for a powerful name to make Aranis proud, and something mythological or TV/movie related (and recognizable!) for Sergeant Thorondil. Let’s see what we can do!

  3. Will - November 5th, 2008 @ 7:15 pm UTC

  4. Grumpbeard - November 5th, 2008 @ 7:23 pm UTC

That chick, the military one, the one with the thing for the guy. You know, the one that was invaded by the evil slug-thing that turned out not to be evil.” (Bonus points if you can name the character.)

    Samantha Carter

    -Grump

  5. Nimizar - November 5th, 2008 @ 7:25 pm UTC

My guess for the character in the description is Samantha Carter :)

As far as devilsaurs go, I had enough trouble coming up with a name for my orange one (I think you’re really stretching the definition of red there…)

  6. Dimion - November 5th, 2008 @ 7:37 pm UTC

Called my devilsaur Kharon, (Charon for some reason is not allowed for a pet name, reserved or what not) it is an alternate spelling for the boatman that carries you across the river styx, or the greek version of the personification of death, I choose it for him because it is a powerful name, and gives him the notion that he kills with no emotion, but simply because he can and is able to.

You are more than welcome to copy if this was helpful

  7. Mania - November 5th, 2008 @ 7:46 pm UTC

Nimizar: Really? You don’t think of them as red? Huh.

And yes, apparently I am not as hard to understand as I thought I was, since both Grumpbeard and Nimizar knew who I was thinking of. (I get her name confused with the one from that other series, the one who pranced around all of season 1 in her underwear with the stupid six-limbed CGI ‘dinosaur’.)

  8. Boarwood - November 5th, 2008 @ 8:25 pm UTC

i’ve always thought of them as brown… idk, i don’t much care for the devilsaur pets, look at latin names.

  9. Dzuri - November 5th, 2008 @ 8:38 pm UTC

For the red one, how about “Smaug,” after the powerful red dragon in The Hobbit?

For the white one, that’s harder. I can’t think of any TV show name, but how about Icefang?

I picked the black one and named it “Onyx.” :)

  10. Ysteri - November 5th, 2008 @ 8:52 pm UTC

For the white dinosaur, how about “Sweettooth”?

    (perhaps SweetTooth?)

  11. blake curry - November 5th, 2008 @ 9:08 pm UTC

mines thumper tho i liked stompy bitres fang big foot gnome bites or sirbitesalot or if ya want some thing dramatic and cool refer to the latin languge or stuff about claws and fangs deathclaw death fang deathmaul keenedge keenfang razor sightthat stuff im naming my raptor sheathtalon or claw

  12. Drakkena - November 5th, 2008 @ 9:28 pm UTC

I actually tamed the White Devilsaur on my 70 Hunter, he’s level 67 now but I named him Gabriel after my Albino Dragon character XD I’d say anything along those lines. Quite possibly Albino in a different language :P

  13. Rottingham - November 5th, 2008 @ 10:42 pm UTC

I like “Jurasic” becasue the red devilsaur always reminds me of the scene from Jurasic Park when the Tyranosaurous Rex cases the People in the Jeep. idk why, maybe just the color of him :P
And for the White one, how about “Silver”,”SilverBullet”,”SilverTooth”, or my favorite(Deals with monsterous bite) “PurleyWhites”

  14. ophianth - November 5th, 2008 @ 11:26 pm UTC

i would name either of them bahamut beacause that is what i named mine from the video game series final fantasy, he is like a demonic dragon and it just kinda fit

  15. Seraje - November 6th, 2008 @ 12:34 am UTC

I have the white devilsaur on my hunter and I named him Morrison. I like random references to see if people get them. :P (My worm is named Shaihulud XD )

For the orange..or red one : Gilgamesh or I like the Smaug suggestion.

For the white one : Lilith seems oddly appropriate. :P

  16. Watermist - November 6th, 2008 @ 1:53 am UTC

Hmm, when I read Seraje’s comment about naming the white devilsaur Lilith, my Teen Titans geekness rose in full force!

The white devilsaur? Name her Omen.

As for the brown-red devilsaur… perhaps (this is purely a joke because I’m not that brainy on television and I’m far too lazy to look up the correct spelling of mythical names) Barney?

(If Blizzard ever make a purple devilsaur, I’ll definitely be naming him Barney. So many people hate Barney.)

  17. Fireshade - November 6th, 2008 @ 2:34 am UTC

    Degahr. meaning “Trouble”

    Vlos. meaning “Blood”

Jiku. meaning “Rend” or “To Rend”

    Drathir. meaning “Moon”

    Streea. meaning “Death”

    Korital. meaning “Snow”

    Silinrul. meaning “Hunter”

    Maelthra. meaingin “Dragon”

Hope thats not to many ideas…

  18. Evandelle - November 6th, 2008 @ 2:43 am UTC

Okie, hmmm…not sure about a suggestion for Aranis…

    BUT

For Sergeant Thorondil, I hereby suggest you name your T-Rex Graham! After Dr. Graham in Jurassic Park! I thought that would be a great name since you had thought of other movie names already! :)

    Hope that helps!

  19. Makoes - November 6th, 2008 @ 3:32 am UTC

My first thought that came to mind was of course “Grimlock” “Me Grimlock, me king” I think alot of people would get the message /lol.

    other ideas…hmm movie themed eh?

    Ripley
    House
    Gundam
Vlakorados (is a red Saurian monster in the FF series)
    GalianBeast
    Bleach
    Casshern
    LordofWar
    Patlabour
    Familyguy
    AVP
…ok, now to stop looking at my bookshelf…

    Thunder
    Quake
    Rumble
    Rancore
    GearsofWar
    Gatlin
    Tsunder
    Bahamut (king of dragons)
    Ragnaros/Ragnarok

    Hope these help :)

  20. Gutler - November 6th, 2008 @ 7:25 am UTC

I named my albino devilsaur Kashu which in taure means Ivory ^^.

  21. Nimizar - November 6th, 2008 @ 7:46 am UTC

The mention of the Tokra was the giveaway for me when it came to the SG-1 reference (wasn’t 100% sure it was Sam though – you might have meant one of the actual Tokra, but I couldn’t remember any of their names). You have me on the six-limbed CGI dinosaur though – even with Google’s assistance, the best I can manage for that is Marion from Dinotopia (and the Dino in that only has 4 limbs).

  22. Emowin - November 6th, 2008 @ 9:19 am UTC

How bout Ra for the red one, not the actual egiption god but to name him after the bad guy from the original Stargate (not the show I mean the movie)

And lets see storong and feminine hmmmmm………how about Xena, Gabriealle, or maybe Bast or Bastet (I know shes a cat goddess but she is strong and femine)

  23. Messyah - November 6th, 2008 @ 9:51 am UTC

Just take a white devilsaur to Netherstorm and he will appear to be blue. ;-)

  24. Estella - November 6th, 2008 @ 10:19 am UTC

    White Devilsaur:
    Wraith
    Siren
    Banshee

Maybe something along the lines of a spectral name given the white coloring.

    Red Devilsaur
If looking for a bit of pop cultural influence, why not name it Crichton? After Michael Crichton, author of Jurassic Park who just died.

  25. Martoles - November 6th, 2008 @ 11:45 am UTC

Named my white devilsaur Gaghiel which means Roaring Beast of God.

I have a habit of naming all my pets after the angels from Neon Genesis Evangelion

  26. Selesti - November 6th, 2008 @ 12:07 pm UTC

Female white devilsaur, eh? I made my a male…and I didn’t think I’d ever really be taming one since trying to get the orange (yes, I see them as orange or red-orange too) was a pain in the butt on PTR. My bad boy is really growing on me though…I’ve even come up with a story for him if I can ever get around to posting it on the forums. I named my devilsaur Masaru, Japanese for ‘victory’. I used to have a food theme going, as some of you all ready know, but lately I’ve been leaning toward Japanese and Native American names.

BTW, I’m kinda stumped on a tanking pet. I plan to try a rhino as soon as I’m able, but honestly…I hate most of the tanking pets they have…at least half of them. Gorillas included. Guess we’ll see when the expansion comes out…a week from today. *squeals with glee*

  27. Sigrdrífa - November 6th, 2008 @ 12:47 pm UTC

    who is Samantha Carter?

  28. Gromper - November 6th, 2008 @ 1:26 pm UTC

Haha – you could name her KellyRipper

  29. Urthona - November 6th, 2008 @ 2:21 pm UTC

    “beauty of raw female power”

    Devi

People will think you shaved off the letters L S A U R, but you and I will know that Devi is the Hindu goddess of what you described. I like short, simple names that can be intellectual and practical. Perhaps you do too.

    And for Thorondil:

At first, I went straight to Nidhogg, the name of the dragon that gnawed on the roots of the Norse World Tree. But then I realized Nidhogg was a very clumsy name to read and pronounce, and didn’t convey enough gravitas to be suitable. So fictionalized dragons: Gojira, Fafnir, Ladon, Gyo… None of them feel right. I may be stumped. I’ll sit and think.

  30. Theliia - November 6th, 2008 @ 2:28 pm UTC

I was thinking Crichton as well but I wasn’t thinking of Michael, I was thinking John Crichton from the TV show Farscape.
Along the same lines for the white devilsaur a good kick butt female name would be Aeryn Sun.

  31. Lanny T. - November 6th, 2008 @ 3:46 pm UTC

For the red (yes, we are stretching that definition for now) – Tchazzar
A red dragon from Dungeons & Dragons. (T-rex….dragons….close enough) I suggest looking up the name on wikiedia. An excerpt I liked, “Tchazzar is a force of pure chaos and evil. He is convinced of his superiority over all living things…”

I’m kinda lost on the white devilsaur right now. I’ll be back for that one.

  32. Lanny T. - November 6th, 2008 @ 4:13 pm UTC

Found one for the white rexy. I feel like I’m somewhat swiping a past name. The last T-rex NTP was named Abaddon, Hebrew meaning “destruction”. I’m taking it a little further.

Abaddon is the Hebrew name for Apollyon. Apollyon is the greek name in biblical, apocalyptic theology given to the destoyer of the world and “angel of the bottomless pit.” (See Revelation chapter 9)

So there it is….my vote for Apollyon.

  33. elly - November 6th, 2008 @ 4:44 pm UTC

i named my albino dino Pickles. :D everyone loves Pickles!

  34. Kristy - November 6th, 2008 @ 4:57 pm UTC

Yeah, I’d go with “Albino” for the white one.

I’ll go with “Smaug” or “Jurassic” too, for the brown one.

And the so-called “red” Devilsaur is not red to me, it is brown.

  35. Durana - November 6th, 2008 @ 5:38 pm UTC

A lot of people are suggesting “Jurassic” as a name, but Tyrannosaurus actually lived during the Cretaceous period…. So I’m going to throw Cretaceous out there as a name
For some more Dinonerd name suggestions:
Theropod – The suborder T.Rex belonged to.
Daspleto – After the Daspletosaurus, part of the Tyrannosaurid genis
    Alioramus – Another Tyrannosaurid.
Sue – The name given to the largest, complete T.Rex skeleton found to date

  36. Venera - November 6th, 2008 @ 5:50 pm UTC

This name could probably be used for both, I’ve seen it suggested on the hunter forums before.

    CleverGirl

It’s from the Jurassic park movie where Muldoon gets ambushed by the raptors, granted it’s pointed toward the raptor but could still be used for a devilsaur considering that they know how to sneak up on you.

  37. Mandrill - November 6th, 2008 @ 6:38 pm UTC

I don’t know if this will help name one of the devilsaur’s or not, but I’ve named most of my toons & pets after bands. On Nazgrel (US) my lvl 63 night elf hunter Mandrill, has 3 pets currently – Triumph (cat – his first pet tamed at lvl 10 – now lvl 62), Kongas (lvl 62 gorilla from STV) & Ghostface (lvl 61 Frostsaber Pride Watcher from Winterspring). All four of them are named after bands (Ghostface is actually taken from the band – Ghostface Killah)

  38. kindred - November 6th, 2008 @ 7:26 pm UTC

I dont know about any1 else but i named my ironhide devilsaur Vindicator cuz i thought it was hella cool. i like the idea of smaug for the red but u could name him thorn (if any1 has read the eragon books you kno what i mean) and the white one could be storm or even blizzard XD. hope i helped.

  39. Utakthepoint - November 6th, 2008 @ 11:02 pm UTC

i named my red devilsaur simply – TheDevil >:D

  40. Poseidonis - November 6th, 2008 @ 11:14 pm UTC

I tamed the white devilsaur because it was the first one I found after the patch. Had trouble coming up with a name but finally settled on “Neversaurus”

  41. Mania - November 7th, 2008 @ 6:26 am UTC

Nimizar: I didn’t mean to derail this thread. :> But I was talking about Abby from Primeval. Her sidekick is supposedly a gliding Coelurosauravus, but the awful CGI version is shown with what appear to be true (if rather insectoid) wings that allow it powered flight. There’s a huge difference between gliding membranes and wings, and a creature with four legs plus two wings would have six limbs and would no longer, strictly speaking, be a reptile.

  42. Xilnold - November 7th, 2008 @ 2:07 pm UTC

    Grimlok?

  43. Latharanth - November 7th, 2008 @ 10:24 pm UTC

    how about

    GRUMPY

    Rock

    MrMouthy

    or Chomp

  44. Regash - November 9th, 2008 @ 1:22 am UTC

    For the white one:

Icefyre – One of the two remaining dragons from the Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb. The other is Tintglia

    For the reddish one:
Scatha – A long-worm from the Grey Mountains in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, known as “Scatha the Worm”

    Cheers from germany!
    - Regash (Die Nachtwache[EU])

  45. Mariban - November 9th, 2008 @ 4:42 pm UTC

Name him Chernabog (from the end of Fantasia) ppl will recognise that and Chernabog is awesomely powerful. So… ya. Chernabog.

  46. Garzon - November 11th, 2008 @ 7:49 pm UTC

I have no ideas for the devilsaurs for these hunters..:( but i have a devilsaur that I named HordeZilla..:) another name that i thought would be cool is Chomper

  47. Siggy - November 25th, 2008 @ 4:31 pm UTC

    Uhh…

    White
    Snowball (Simpsons)

    Reddy Yellow
Solaris (Translated into Sun or Solar)
    Draka (Sounds like Drake)

    For the red…”Chilipepper”

  51. Ghostlyarrow - January 30th, 2009 @ 3:38 pm UTC

For the red, why not Fafnir? It’s a dragon from Nordic mythology.
I dunno for the white one… Razorlady?

  52. Michelle - April 17th, 2009 @ 4:34 pm UTC

    Oprah…
    I named mine Violit..

  53. Stellara - July 31st, 2009 @ 10:23 pm UTC

im personally a great fan of naming my pets after greek gods/goddesses that seem appropriate with what the pet is and how it looks. plus there are SO MANY!
    anywayy, for Anaris:
Eos – was goddess of dawn
    Calliope – muse of music/poetry
Scylla – actually a nymph tuned into a monster

    for Thorondil:
Typhon ? this might be a little over used, but im sot sure
    Zelus – rivalry
    Cratos – supremecy

  54. theavenged - August 9th, 2009 @ 3:45 am UTC

i never know what to name mine. they are so differant every time. my white bear is named frostfever after a dk move and my wolf is named snugglemufin(yea i dont know) and my worm is named wormy and my core hound is named Kurken and well…the kurken

  55. Cherrymint - August 10th, 2009 @ 4:43 am UTC

I named mine Nibbles… Cos he’s cute and likes to nibble on things…ya ya…boring type of name but i like it! :)

  56. Restraint - October 23rd, 2009 @ 8:51 pm UTC

    my devilsaur trios names:
    White:Precious
    Red/Brown:Winston
    Black:Metaljaw

Precious just matches the soft, white look
Winston is the name of the protaginist from 1984, a very strong willed character
Metaljaw….well its jaws could probably crush the Fel Reaver, and it was originally an Ironhide
