Name That Pet: Moths Come In All Shapes and Sizes

Name That Pet: Cherixion & MothFinal Names:
Cherixion: Astura
Hemingway: Kilimanjaro

Now here’s a pet that would make a good bouquet! And yet somehow moths, while elegant and beautiful, aren’t nearly as soft as you might imagine … at least not when they are gnawing on your face!

Anyway, we have two new moth-owners who are looking for names today. First up is Cherixion from Boulderfist, with a simple (but enthusiastic) request:

I need a new name for my pet Moth! I saw it on the PTR and KNEW that it had to be mine! It is a very beautiful pet, and I would like you guys to name it for me! Any names that refer to it as fuzzy, cute, buglike, or pretty.

A Tauren with a moth … at first it struck me as odd, but somehow it just fits.

[edit] And here’s a pic of Cherixion with the newly-named Astura. Cherixion says: “I thought it would fit better than Astur, since I got a little Blue Moth egg. :D And she did totally NOT eat that lynx in the background! >_> Thanks for the helpful names everyone! Good thing she doesn’t eat chain mail. :P”

Name That Pet: Cherixion & Astura

Name That Pet: Hemingway & MothNext we have a dwarf hunter from Elune named Hemingway. (And make sure you click on the pic to see the whole family portrait.) Hemingway writes:

Hemingway is everything I wanted in a Dwarf Hunter. Named as something of an homage to Ernest Hemingway, I think of him as strong, respectful of nature, and a rugged outdoorsman. I enjoy having my pets’ names mean something, but not necessarily a direct translation from another language.

My other pet, my bear, is named Shardik (taken from the Stephen King “Dark Tower” series). Hemingway will have many a great adventure with his new moth friend, so a great name is a must! Something mythical or nature-oriented, serious, lore-oriented, etc. would be nice. Nothing silly and please, NO Godzilla or Mothra references! Haha.

Anyway, I’m really excited to level my second Hunter to max level, and do it with a brand new pet! Thanks Mania, and thanks fellow readers! Happy Hunting to all!

Everyone is so excited! I love that.

So for Cherixion we need cute, fuzzy, pretty, bug-like names, and for Hemingway we need something serious, mythical, possibly nature-oriented. Let’s get started!

Moths are a difficult pet to name…. However, I instantly thought that the name Serenity fits for two reasons. a) It is the name of it’s ability (i.e. serenity dust) and b) Serenity, the movie (based on Firefly series which is the best!)
Other than that, here is another list of names I have come up with…

Gypsy (a RL species of moth)
Elune (whole nocturnal ref, although neither nelf..)
    Luna (latin = moon)
Celeste (have a friend with this name lol)
    Selene (acient greek = moon)
Ecliptic (like there wings lol…oh, wait)
Imbrium, Serenitatis, Crisium, and Nectaris (all impact craters on the moon)

Thats about it… although I only really explored various names and references to the moon/night.

    Good luck naming.

    Windowdeco
    Zapped
    Splat

    (sorry couldnt help it)

  4. Vulpinor & Canopener - November 3rd, 2008 @ 9:22 pm UTC

    For Hemingway:
It may not be terribly creative, but how about just Ernest.
That way as you read it, it will say “Ernest Hemingway’s Pet”

  5. hyena84 - November 3rd, 2008 @ 10:19 pm UTC

i might have to look up some more of those moon craters for the names of my fuzzpuffs.moths do go nicely with tauren or nightelves.
i think ernest is another way of saying sincere or honest.im not sure though.i cant find it in my dictonary…

  6. Aerye - November 3rd, 2008 @ 10:28 pm UTC

For Hemingway… Kilimanjaro. From ‘The Snows of Kilimanjaro’ which fits your name, and since the moth is a white one, the snows aspect of it fits as well. :D

  7. Sukulatae - November 3rd, 2008 @ 11:00 pm UTC

I like Atropos for moths. Not only is that the name of one of the fates, it’s also part of the latin name for the Death’s Head moth.

  8. Luminial - November 3rd, 2008 @ 11:00 pm UTC

    For Cherixion: Azurewing, Pixeldust

    For Hemingway: Crescentwing, Crescent, Esclipse

    That’s all I got, lol

  9. Celli - November 3rd, 2008 @ 11:19 pm UTC

BTW Hemmingway, Steven King got the name Shardik from the book of the same name by Richard Adams, the author who also wrote Watership Down. I picked the book up from a used bookstore simply because I loved The Dark Tower and Mr. King had referenced the book in an interview.

  10. Skul - November 4th, 2008 @ 12:36 am UTC

    Candyfloss

  11. CozyTea - November 4th, 2008 @ 3:03 am UTC

I named my moth Cake. ^_^

Since your moth is blue, I’d name it Berry.

    that’s just me and all..

  12. BloodGod22 - November 4th, 2008 @ 3:52 am UTC

How about Butterfree, Venomoth or Lepidoptera?

  13. Sarai - November 4th, 2008 @ 4:55 am UTC

    Yay, moths!!!

How about Flutter, Shimmer, Astor(or Astora for a girl), Flyby(night), Luna or Lunar, or Moonie.
I like the idea to name Hemingway’s moth Ernest, it would be like a tribute to the NPC. ^_^

  14. draiggoch - November 4th, 2008 @ 5:28 am UTC

    How about Fizzbucket

btw my hunter Scrumpy has a black wolf (snarl) called Hemingway and Draigg has Humar which is named Steinbeck. Love the ‘Ernest’ idea.

    /grin

  15. Thoreau - November 4th, 2008 @ 6:53 am UTC

The adjective meaning sincere or honest is spelled “earnest”. Hyena84, that’s why you didn’t find it in the dictionary.

The title of Oscar Wilde’s comedy “The importance of being Earnest” is based on the very fact that the name and the adjective are pronounced the same. Obviously it features someone called Ernest who is not so earnest…

Btw, lol at “Ernest, Hemingway’s pet”. Good idea for a name!

  16. Shagrat-Turalyon - November 4th, 2008 @ 8:46 am UTC

I named my moth Dustox…lawl pokemon.

For Cherixion, a name like Attacus would fit. It’s the genus name for the Atlas moth, which is the largest moth in the world, which would be befitting for the Tauren.

For Hemingwary I like the name Chrysiridia for your moth. It’s the genus name for the sunset moth which is considered one of the most appealing moths in the world.

  17. Maree - November 4th, 2008 @ 8:46 am UTC

    I second Vulpinor & Canopener’s suggestion.
I did something like that a while ago, just with Daler Mehndi ^^.

  18. Sigrdrífa - November 4th, 2008 @ 10:47 am UTC

oh, I am just no good at names anymore. I tame one and name it Serenity for the same reasons Rhiw said. But deleted it and tamed another when I decided that name was going to be common. Now she is just “Moth”. I was thinking of “BadMotha”, lol, but that was when I was drinking peach margaritas the other night (makes playing WOW pretty funny at times), but didn’t (my brain told me I would be sorry later on).

if others can sway your mind, I vote on “Ernest” :) Goes together very well with you, like peanutbutter & jelly, hmmmm.

  19. Sigrdrífa - November 4th, 2008 @ 10:54 am UTC

@ Cherixionoops, sorry dear. I forgot this is for two folks. Those names that Tashi and all the others came up with are nice! What do moths eat? nectar right. So something sweet? Peaches? nah, thats not good. Oh well, I truly tried and failed.

  20. Tashi - November 4th, 2008 @ 11:04 am UTC

I just saw the “whole family portrait!” It’s so cute! I have a draenei hunter with a white moth who wants to tame Aspatha the Broodmother:
    http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/mobs/mob_aspathathebroodmother.html
Isn’t she the CUTEST? I <3 moths! I would go out and tame one right now, but it’s patch day… :*(

Anyway, the whole point of me posting… I, too, love the Ernest idea. You and Ernest would make the perfect pair! :D But, if it’s not quite what your looking for, then don’t feel pressured into naming it that. A beast this wonderful requires the perfect name! ;D

  21. Rahthiel - November 4th, 2008 @ 11:06 am UTC

I named my Moth for my BE hunter Dinal, Thalassian for Vale, because it was a Vale Moth lol.

  22. Tashi - November 4th, 2008 @ 11:09 am UTC

@Luminial: Your name has inspired me to add this suggestion for Cherixion:

    Luminous

Your moth certainly glows, doesn’t it? ;D

  23. Shagrat-Turalyon - November 4th, 2008 @ 12:47 pm UTC

@Sigrdrifa-You could have just had an inscripter make you a certificate of ownership instead of abandoning and taming a new one ;)

  24. marzix - November 4th, 2008 @ 3:05 pm UTC

those certificates ive seen in AH for like 250g

  25. Evandelle - November 4th, 2008 @ 3:06 pm UTC

Hmm for Cherixion, I would recommend: Serenity, Sparkle, Twinkle, Pixie, or Azure.

For Hemingway I second the suggest of Ernest, that truly is a super name.

  26. Boarwood - November 4th, 2008 @ 5:00 pm UTC

I have already said that i named my moth saige, i think that’s a good name, take it if you like.

  27. Sigrdrífa - November 4th, 2008 @ 5:22 pm UTC

@Shagrat-Turalyon – really?!? I have no idea what these certs can do or can’t. I still don’t have any glymps or however it is spelled. Heck, I am still in green and some blue armor. There is too much to try and figure out what is what or even where these days with the game. :( Where can I learn more about these certificates?

But it is ok. The first one was a cutie from around Shat, low level (65). the 2nd one is from Area 52 and was lvl 69 (saved me 4 levels of leveling) :) She is that beauty that is blue with red wing inserts. She upped to 70 last night.

  28. desk - November 4th, 2008 @ 6:10 pm UTC

Stumped for moth names but I have to say, Hemingway is an awsome hunter name :)

  29. Cherixion - November 4th, 2008 @ 7:37 pm UTC

Good names so far guys. Keep it up! I’m considering Astur (derived from Sarai’s suggestion of Astor) and Atropos from Sukulatae. After a few more posts, I’ll decide what I’ll want. :)

  30. Silvart - November 4th, 2008 @ 9:49 pm UTC

Shardik is actually the title of a book by Richard Adams (also, about a bear), which predates the Dark Tower Chronicles. The book (and the author) are referred to in an obtuse manner in the Dark Tower Chronicles (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_characters_from_the_Dark_Tower_series#Shardik).

As for the name of the moth, “Flutter”, gets my vote :)

    Silvart on Proudmoore

  31. hyena84 - November 5th, 2008 @ 1:59 am UTC

ah.that would explain why i couldnt find it.
id sugjest “peachfuzz” but some people seem to find it offencive.something about butts apperently…

  32. Hemingway - November 5th, 2008 @ 9:31 pm UTC

Okay, so I’ve been lurking since this Name That Pet came up (thanks again, Mania!) and a few remarks I’d like to make…

First off, thanks so much for all the kudos on my name. I actually did the $10 name change just to get this, when I thought of it. :)

Also, I knew Stephen King based Shardik off of the original novel of the same name; I think Eddie or Calvin Tower or somewhere in the series, someone makes reference to that, don’t they? But I’ve never read the Richard Adams story, just The Dark Tower. ;)

I really like everyone’s endorsement of “Ernest “… but Ernest just doesn’t quite seem write for a moth. I might make that my name for Sian-Rotam, once I level high enough. So thanks for that recommendation. :)

As far as the Moth goes… I choose…

    Kilimanjaro!

I guess it was sort of an obvious choice. But I also think it was an inevitable one. There were some really great recommendations, so many that it was actually *challenging* to choose just one! The Moth I have right now is the starting Draenei zone moth (the little level 1s) because I’m so low level. But eventually? I’m totally taming Aspatha the Broodmother. So the name will be perfect, then.

THANKS SO MUCH, FELLOW PETOPIANS. :)

  33. Mania - November 5th, 2008 @ 9:42 pm UTC

Excellent choices! I’ve updated the post with both hunters’ chosen pet names. Thanks, everyone!

  34. Fireshade - November 6th, 2008 @ 2:43 am UTC

    For the blue one: Glimmer

For the white one: Yuki (snow) or Slyan (star)

  35. Keilden - November 6th, 2008 @ 2:57 am UTC

Lilius after the mooncrater(that is named after my family)

  36. Sigrdrífa - November 6th, 2008 @ 5:24 pm UTC

but Ernest just doesn’t quite seem write for a moth.

OMG, roflmao on that. Good pun!

  37. Nutsy - US BWR - November 7th, 2008 @ 1:52 pm UTC

    Named my moth Lunatak
BTW – Lunatak is my fav. right now.

  38. Everii - November 11th, 2008 @ 1:18 pm UTC

I tamed one of these the very moment the patch was done downloading, I’ve wanted one since I first saw them on Azuremyst.

    I named mine
    Serenity
has a nice calming sense to it I think. Really referencing Firefly, but also happens to be the name of their skill Serenity dust :P

  39. noobnumnums - November 17th, 2008 @ 4:49 pm UTC

I love the look of Aspatha the broodmother, but where exactly is she? is she INSIDE Gammoth or atop it?

  40. Mania - November 17th, 2008 @ 5:33 pm UTC

Aspatha is on top of Gammoth, on the .. north? .. side, I think. I stumbled onto her when I was trying to get back to my corpse and fell off the actual top onto her ledge. She is guarding a number of eggs, including a big glowing egg that gives a quest (at least for the Horde).

  41. noobnumnums - November 17th, 2008 @ 6:35 pm UTC

Thanks! This is a great blog!

  42. Seher - December 10th, 2009 @ 7:24 am UTC

    I called mine Manfred.

    It’s a decent name.

    Don’t take it, it’s mine.
