Name That Pet: Forbeef’s Raptor

Sometime it’s the simplest requests that are the most fun. Forbeef, a Tauren hunter from Scarlet Crusade, sent me this request:
Since I’m a Tauren I’m big and gentle but not afraid to fight. So I decide to find a pet that was mean.
After an hour of searching I fond Goreclaw and wasted no time taming him. My friend and I spent a week thinking of names for him but we came up with nothing. So we gave up for the time.
One day I was looking up pets and found your site and saw your Name That Pet page. So I thought if my friend and I couldn’t think of a name why couldn’t someone else think of one?
I’m looking for a name that’s not funny or silly and has a cool ring to it that goes with the pet. Can you help?

“Forchicken” … can there be any other name as appropriate? LOL
Well, I had a raptor at one point named Percitus; cant remember what it means but it sounds cool.
So do you want a mean name for it? Just start slapping words together, like Bloodmaw, Razorclaw, or name him a violent word like Slaughter or Carnage. Or you could always stick with Goreclaw, that’s kind of cool, too.
I had a raptor from WC once.
I named him Toruk after a big, scary dragon in a game I play.
I had always regretted not getting another raptor like him…
Either way, If Toruk doesn’t work, look up other famous lizards from anywhere.
So long as it isn’t Puff, I think we’re good.
I named mine Nibbler, and fed him ham, because Futurama rocks.

I have to say, Messyah’s theme just kicks butt. :P So I’ll second her suggestion of “Forchicken” and add this one, “Forketchup.” ROFL FOOD NAMES
When I had him, I named my Goreclaw Akashi. It had no particular meaning, I just liked the sound. And if you’re looking for serious names, here are a few compound names:

Blacktalon
Littlefoot (I <3 Littlefoot)
I also like the name “Abyss” for your raptor.

I can’t take it any longer. What true hunter out there is really going to request a name for their pet from someone else? Deciding on, tracking down, taming and finally naming a new pet is one of the coolest aspects of playing a hunter (aside from wrecking shop), and to just name them willy nilly based on recommendations from randoms seems so impersonal. I’m as anti-RP as anyone, but pet naming is something I take very seriously for some reason. You’re stuck with your toon’s name, but as you level and move on to new pets, it’s your chance to shine, at least vicariously, through their name. The one exception, is the tough to tame pet, that requires some help from a guildie. I’ll usually let them throw out some options to be taken into consideration.
So I say, if a name doesn’t occur to you right away, be patient and play with the pet for awhile. I’m sure one will occur to you. Sorry for the rant. :D
And I’ll say, if you can’t stand name-a-pets; don’t read the name this pet section.

Agonizing over the perfect name is not nearly as big of a deal now that you can rename your pets.
I had a wolf from 42 to 64 and never managed to name him.
So yeah, it doesn’t always ‘just occur to you’.

Seems like people like Japanese names lol. I had a raptor named “Gir” (cuz Gir is my fave char) But I have a wolf name “Blackavar” (From a move called, Watership Down) I get names from fave movies or TV shows ^^ Hope that opend up an idea on where to get a name for your awesome raptor. Good Luck =)

OK,I have a question that maybe somebody can answer… and sorry, but it’s not about a pet name. OK, I have been camping Oozeworm and Grubthor since the patch came out, and i haven’t seen any trace of them… not alive, not dead. I am on the Sargaris server, and I am wondering if this is a bug or something. I realize they are rare, but 9 days of not seeing them? That is a bit rediculous. So, if anybody from sargaris has seem them, or even if you have seen them on other servers, could you please let me know. Thanks

Considering a number of Tauren Hunters are Tauren for the lore aspect… that or they like steak :p I’d make a suggestion of getting a non-Tauren friend to spend a bit of time with you and switch languages. Talk in Taruhe (sp?!) run through some of the names suggested here, or even Goreclaw. If you like how it looks, feel free to use it. Most people will just stare at it and it will go over their heads. But you’ll know what it means.
On the other hand, Lizzard is said to taste like chicken… so maybe ForChicken? I do like the idea of ForChicken ^_^.

A lot of people will laugh at that. Believe me, Antilok and his pet pig Brakes went over really well. My guy is always good for the amusing pet/hunter combos.

Well, I know exactly what you mean, and I personally prefer to look around and try to figure out a name on my own. I dislike naming pets after characters who already exist, because it feels as though the uniqueness of both the pet and the character it is named after is taken away.
Names gotta be inspired by something, though – who cares if you really, truly, just absolutely LOVE something that someone else is suggesting? Names are important, but they are still not the be-all and end-all of what your pet is…there is more to it than that, but unless you’re a prolific author, chances are only you know what makes it itself.
Besides, a lot of people in the community just love chatting about names in general. It’s a fun activity even if you’ve got all your pets worked out and perfectly named.

No offense, but…that’s an extremely insensitive comment, and also completely unnecessary. A lot of RPers do follow this blog; saying that only reinforces the idea that people who don’t RP are a bunch of stupid uber l33t raider/pwn sum noooooooobs!! types. Also, a lot of people make out RP to be incompatible with being skilled at the game. This is a dirty lie, partly perpetuated by crummy roleplayers, but partly perpetuated by stupid idiots who feel the urge to poke their enormous noses into whatever is being done on their screen whether it really has anything to do with them or not. People who can’t both RP and play their characters skillfully (for whatever activities they can enjoy) are lame, and if you catch people acting out a really lame RP storyline, then that means they’re bad writers, not that RP itself is bad. And yeah…RP does attract some doozies…
And as a note: yes, I roleplayed in the past. No, I don’t do it any more – after initially having some fun, I started realizing that it was truly awkward and kinda boring. However, my characters are fleshed out and I write about them a lot; they are not merely my “virtual avatars.” In that way, I suppose I almost fall into the “RP” category, but more in fanfiction terms.
Sorry, but people making judgments about the more creative aspects of WoW just set me off. Guess I’m a true writer, because this post here is a freaking novel ;P

Take your time naming your pet. Sometimes, the name comes out immediately but other times, every name you think will not fit for one reason or another.
I recently tamed Takk the Leaper and named him “Devilsaur”. I get quite a few whispers about where I tamed my unusually-skinned Devilsaur ;)
I also have a gorilla named after our guild’s longest serving warrior tank.
As stated by someone before, if a name doesn’t occur to you right away, be patient and play with the pet for awhile.

I named my Raptor “Chewy”… idk… it fits i guess…
If you want to show off the tauren nature, you might be better served with an ironic, gentle name for a dino, like “Buttercup” or “Pansy.” Or take the Herbalist route and find an herb with a cool name, like “Bruiseweed.”

I know that you’re looking for a more serious name, but your name evokes all sorts of amusing and silly pet names, so you might want to reconsider that possibility. :D (ForChicken and ImHungry were both good ones already suggested.)

I think about smoky quartz (can be brown or black) when I look at that raptor’s coloring. Maybe a name based on that or based on his jewelry and feather colors.
@ Dweezill: I have been having the SAME PROBLEM!! I’ve only been camping for three days though. I recommend camping Dustwallow Marsh though, because Oozeworm has only one specific spawn area, whereas Grubthor spawns all over. That’s what I’ve been doing. ^__^ I’m sorry to be ranting about this on a name that pet post, but something must be wrong! I want my yellow green-eyed worm so badly, but no evidence of his existence has ever been squashed under my feet! (Eew, worm guts!) The only proof I have for my guildies who think I’m crazy for camping a giant maggot is Petopia and Thottbot. Where is he?!

Kiddin, call him Katashi, or if you want him to relate to you in some way, call him Forclaw. Grimgore, or something like like, just take few cool words and mix and match them :D always the best way to do it, you’ll find one that you like.

Well,I have been camping Dustwallow since the patch came up, and still no sight of him… not dead or alive. This is almost 2 weeks in, and I haven’t seen him. I put in a ticket with Blizz, but I doubt they will answer any questions about mobs… so, if anybody here does see him, let us know. He is non-existant on the sargeris server. 11 days is a looong time to camp a critter nonstop without even seeing him, so something has to be up. I have thealbino version of the worm right now (sunken temple elite) and the worms are great pets, but I would really like the orange one. anyway, if you can, allyou pet peope keep me posted if you see him. Thanks.
Hrm….to those of you camping for orange worms, depending on your server’s population/motivation, you might want to try riding around Silithus looking for Grubthor anyway. I ran into him post-patch in one of the western sections of Silithus that he’s listed as spawning in quite by accident. Even with people going for the AQ and CC achievements, odds are still pretty good that you’ll come across him, since the area is generally deserted, at least in my experience. His spawn timer is also a lot lower than Oozeworm’s, so your odds should be better in that respect as well.

Scarlet Crusade is an RP server if I am not mistaken. Forchicken wouldn’t be a good name for anything on an RP server.
@Kalli: Thank you! I looked on Thottbot for some sign of a spawn timer and I just had no clue. I have run back and forth between the zones, hoping that the worm was there. I will check Silithus more often, if his timer is shorter.

I hunted with Goreclaw at my side for many levels, before releasing him into the Un’Goro Crater (where he seemed very happy). On our last hunt we took trophy screenshots with all the different Devilsaurs we took down that day.
I always figured he had a name when I met him – Goreclaw. So I respected that and called him by his name.
