Beta Build 9095

While I was hacking on Petopia this evening, Blizzard went and released a new build to the WotLK beta realms! (And also to the PTR realms, but if you were pro-active and deleted your PTR folder like I did, you won’t be able to log into this PTR test.)

I haven’t even had a chance to patch it yet, but according to WotLK Wiki there are a number of changes to pet skills in this build.

  • Fire Breath – Now has a 20 yard range.
  • Stampede – Damage ranges increased, max rank is 182 to 246 damage up from 91 to 123.
  • Thunderstomp – Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Spore Cloud – Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Lightning Breath – Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Monstrous Bite – Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Poison Spit – Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Tendon Rip – Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Savage Rend – Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Sting – Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Snatch – Focus cost reduced to 20 from 40.
  • Ravage – Damage ranges increased, max rank is 106 to 150 damage up from 89 to 125.
  • Lava Breath – Damage ranges increased, max rank is 128 to 172 damage up from 64 to 86. Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25
  • Rake – Damage ranges decreased, max rank is 24 to 34 damage down from 59 to 83. Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25
  • Acid Spit – Damage ranges increased, max rank is 124 to 176 damage up from 62 to 88. Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Froststorm Breath – Damage ranges increased, max rank is 128 to 172 damage up from 64 to 86. Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Swipe – Damage ranges increased, max rank is 90 to 126 damage up from 60 to 84. Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Gore – Damage ranges added, max rank is 122 to 164 damage. Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.
  • Scorpid Poison – Rank 6 damage reduced to 18 to 40 from 34 to 80. Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.

To be honest, I hadn’t even considered how I might keep up with beta changes after Patch 3.0 launched, so … it looks like I’m back to hacking on Petopia! *grin*

I’m also keeping an eye out for any other interesting pet changes, so definitely let me know if you hear about anything.

    Glad to see Thunderstomp’s focus cost reduced. been using my Gorilla nonstop. I personally think Gorillas are the best petson the game and this reduction just makes it better! Kudos Blizz.

    “Animal Handler– Increases your pet’s expertise by 5/10. Changed from 2% chance to hit”

    I’m curious what “expertise” will do. I wouldn’t mind taking Animal Handler with the latest “build”.

    Expertise reduces the chance for attacks to be dodged or parried. At 10 expertise, you would see very few dodges for your pet (parries should already be very low since pets path behind mobs). I worked it into my planned build right away when I saw the change :)

    Just got my core hound to 70 on live tonight. Tested dps numbers against the lvl 70 dummy. Both cat and CH have the same talents. Both with growl, Focus dump, Rake/Lava breath and the two talented skills on. (I forget the talent’s names.)
    I simply spammed steady to give some focus regen. The test went until I ran out of mana.

    Cat showed 310 dps.
    Corehound showed 262 dps.

    So why would I want an exotic again? That is why they are “fixing” all these numbers a bit.

    yay i put in a report that they should reduce the cost to 20 so that you can keep your dump (25) and your special on at the same time and the special being on cooldown would pop when you gain 20 but the dump would continue to pop while the other was on cooldown. glad to see it happening.

    Rudda, for one thats live, this change isn’t in live yet. For another, thats just one of the ferocity pets. A devilsaur would score higher, just to use the most famous example. Not to mention taking the talent itself would imbue you with four more talent points for your pet. So really the better question is, as a beast master why WOULDN’T you want that talent?

    Palladiamors, I believe Rudda is saying that it’s wrong for a cat to do more dps than a pet that you have to invest 51 points in a tree to get which is why the exotic pets are getting their damage increased.

    I just hope that wasps will get fixed since mine is doing 184.2 dps versus the 202.6 dps it should be.

    Jeanne: Agreed about the wasps, although the li’l fella still holds aggro remarkably well.

    One fix I’d like to see is placing pet abilities clear of the pet’s global cooldown. After an age of trying to use nether shock to counterspell, and getting the message “spell is not ready yet” I realised that the constantly-triggering cooldown off bite was interfering with it. With bite off, nethershock would fire properly unless growl was in the way. I imagine there’s a macro that would turn the thing off and on automatically to give the shock a window, but it’s still somewhat annoying.

    Here’s what I posted on the suggestion forumns.

    “My eyes have fallen on the WotLK Wiki to see that scorpid poison will be reduced to… “Scorpid Poison – Rank 6 damage reduced to 18 to 40 from 34 to 80. Focus cost reduced to 20 from 25.” Who would use a scorpid. I don’t mean to sound like an @@###@* to any moderator who happens to be reading this but even with the reduced cool-down who would use them? They certainly don’t do very much damage in PvE or PvP anymore, let alone they have almost nothing special about that sting except that it stacks. Developers, a little help here? Please say you didn’t bomb the scorpid with a nerf too. He was next to nothing in the first place. I half-expected to see our scorpids get better, and if not, stay the same as it is now. They’re not great but it’s better than nothing. Not it seems we may as well pick a Silithid with the focus dump off, if that. I know you want to buff the exotic pets Blizz but please, would you mind keeping the non-exotics useful too? What would be the gain with using a scorpid? ”

    Anyone share this opinion? I could use some backing up with that post. It’s in suggestions and my name is Nanotyrannus as the poster

    Nonetheless, like the changes, particularly the bear.

    P.S. Didn’t think Rake was weak anyway…

    Scorpids will be used for sting masking in PvP, just as they are now.

    And that’s a very nice change to Animal Handler – guess I will be tweaking my spec plans again.

    Thanks god for that, the sooner this goes Live the better. At the risk of becoming SEVERELY unpopular ^^ I am very, very glad about the Rake Damage reduction, for the longest time cats have needed to be brought in line with other pets. Glad to see about Ravage as well; being one of the few who like the spiky little buggers, I’ll be heading off to Azure now to get me a nice green ravager. On a closing note; I do hope they continue to make Exotics more powerful, especially worms and chimaeras.

    Bradagore,

    I had the same problem you are having with Nethershock with spider’s Web ability. The constant autos keep you from being able to trigger the special ability instantly, making it kind of useless except for a random effect. You sure as heck can’t just trigger it when needed.

    I tried making macros that turned off petattack before Web, but it did no good. Then I made a macro that turned Bite and Growl off autocast before triggering web, and that did not do the trick either. The pet abilities simply trigger too fast to make the pet specials an instant-use item, because they are linked to the same cooldown.

    I guess it’s cool if the spider webs someone every now and then, and the ray interrupts a caster every now and then…but it would be better and make more sense if we could actually trigger those abilities when we want them to go off.

    Nanotrev, had you used a scorpid recently? The scorpids sting, at five stacks full on beast master, was ticking for five hundred damage every three seconds. Five. Hundred. Nature damage. Now, granted most PvP encounters won’t last long enough to GET to five stacks, but even in PvE circumstances it was insane. I personally loved it, but it really did need a nerf, though perhaps having it was a bit much. I may run some tests later to determine the actual extent of it. It may be that it just goes from 500 to 460, but most likely it was slashed from 500 to 250.

    Korzak – problem with those sort of pets is that the tend to reigger the ability on their initial approach – the ray would happily zap a caster as it went in, and the caster would then start casting a spellm in retaliation. And of course where your pet has a long-cooldown focus-free power, you’re going to want tohe focus dump autocasting all the time.

    Simplest would be for the skill to be independent of the global cooldown, like (I think) kill command is.

    Hope the focus thing goes live soon, then my Devilsaur’s bite will finally stop focus dumping what should be used for monstrous bite.

    One thing to keep in mind when we’re looking at these tooltip numbers is that we haven’t sorted out how pet damage is scaling with hunter RAP yet. We know it’s supposed to be happening for all pet abilities, and we know from previous experience that different types of abilities may have different scaling coefficients.

    One thing they need to fix is how Core Hounds, Chimaeras and some other pets with ranged specials do the stop-start thing when they run toward an enemy until they get close enough to use it, then run in normally. Wind Serpents never had that problem.

    I guess when they said they wanted to buff exotics, rather than nerf existing pets to make the talent more appealing they were… what’s a nice way to say lying?

    The expertise is nice but for a cunning pet, wouldn’t you want your target to dodge once in a while so it can use Wolverine bite?

    Okay, this may sound like a stupid question, so please don’t bash me for being an idiot. (Pretty please?) How is a cat’s DPS so high that their Rake ability needs to be decreased? They have a focus dump like every other pet, they have the same talents in their talent tree as the other ferocity pets. The only other difference I see between them and other pets is Prowl. Does Prowl really make so much of a difference in their DPS?

    Looking at the skills here, Ravage was increased to do 106-150, Gore is now 122-164, and several others were also increased. And yet the max rank of Rake does 24 to 34. I think I’m missing something in the math. Would someone please explain the theorycrafting behind that? I’m confuddled. :-/

    I have to say decreasing rake does seem strange. Prowl is not very effective at all considering dash and charge breaks the effect so nerfing rake appears to be an attempt to make raptors worth something to me.

    I dont know about charge since cats dont have it on live bcuse of a bug, but Dash does NOT break Prowl.

    Atm my lvl 67 cats Rake ticks for about 92 I think? Im quite fond of it, to bad to see it nerfed =(

    Mania I read there about you being unsure how abilities scale with hunter RAP. Don’t forger that all pets can gain +49% damage between hunter and pet talent trees. Claw on live now supposed to deal about 60-70 dmg (cant remember exact figures) its dealing ~150 per hit
