Name That Pet is back today with a clever tale from Grizzlehoof, a young Tauren hunter on an RP realm.
Grizzlehoof writes:
My name is Grizzlehoof, a fledgling hunter of the Sharpmane clan. I have recently completed my trials and was granted the ability to tame a companion. I had a grand vision regarding that companion, something that would prove my worth in my elders’ eyes.
You see, not that long ago I did a favor for Maur Raincaller. He was suffering from the venomous bite of a beast called Mazzranache, and required my aid to collect the components of the cure. He told me tales of his grandfather, and how even he had been unable to defeat this dread beast. I swore then and there that I would triumph over this “Mazzranache”, if it was the last thing I did.
So, at the completion of my trials, I set off across Mulgore in search of this beast. I found it much sooner than I expected. I heard it before I saw it, a grim screeching across the hills. I readied my spirit for the bonding, and cast my will upon the creature before my courage failed me.
The sun beat down upon the plains, sweat dripped into my eyes, and the bird did its best to claw me to death. I held firm despite all of this, and after what seemed like an eternity, the beast’s spirit bonded with my own, and he became my companion.
I closed my eyes and whispered a mantra of thanks to my ancestors for passing down to me the courage and fortitude to tame this mighty beast. I wiped the sweat from my face and looked down proudly at my new companion for the first time.
I am going to be the laughingstock of the clan.

I know we’ve helped name Mazzranache before, but honestly half the fun is seeing the taming stories that hunters write. So let’s get some suggestions rolling that fit this clever young hunter and his inadvertent pink tallstrider!

StarScreech. ‘Cause.. they screech. hehe. I take that name, and changed it a little, from “Star Scream” of “Transformers”.
Sunblaze, Jitters, Spearbeak, Brightclaw, or im pretty sure Mazzranache means something in Tauren language like if you were to say Speartooth in Tauren to other peaople it sounds like Isamhule which is a quest in the barrens or Whitemist it comes out Echeakee, so if u could figure out what word comes out Mazzranache that would be cool, its probably somethign like Brightplume or something

You can always go the mythological route.
Bennu – Bird of Egyptian mythology, symbol of Ra, associated with resurrection.
Nunyanune – North American man-eating bird.
Pheng – The Japanese equivalent to the Arabic Roc.
Tlanuwa – Cherokee hawk spirit, feathers made of metal.
Ziz – Giant bird mentioned in the Psalms, known for protecting smaller birds.
(Got a Tallstrider for a pet myself, went with the name LilBuddy; not an RP name by any means though)

I’m bad at names. I just made up Taurahe sounding stuff.
I would have to actually go for ‘Mazzranache’ this time around. After all, you went through a lovely storyline where you chased down the exact beast that the man spoke of. If that is the case, why not leave the creature with the name it is most known by? If it is the legendary Mazzranache, then perhaps its name should be left (changed to) that for all to see.
Or, barring that, I suppose you could name it something like Vileplume, DeadlyRunner, or DreadBird…
Well since it has its own Specific Name why not just call it Mazzranache.
But if you must name it something different I’d go with “Clawfeather” for an RP name
sorry….. its an idea to all not exactly rp…. but “thdmnflmingo” ? LOL but for an RP id go for something about roses if you want beauty. Opalbeak or something with opals might fit him…. but those are more purple…. i know theres a pink gem….. the name excapes me…. but back to subject, id still go with flamingo, or something to do with the unique skin…XD

Sherbert: Mazz’s color always reminds me of this icy dessert. I think it’s because his plumage looks sweet and fruity.
Molly: I love the movie “Pretty in Pink” and what better name for such a pretty, pink bird than that of the film’s leading actress, Molly Ringwald. Of course, choosing this name would mean Mazzie gets a sex change operation :-O
Knip: This is simply the word “pink” spelled backwards. Plus, tallstriders are infamous for their grooming (nipping) animation while standing idle.

Well i am not good at names but i called mine Milkshake as it reminded me of strawberry milkshake and of course as a Tauren hunter if i attack a NE their milky skin would be shaken.

well looked up hawkstriders and they eledged models to be shaped from moa and terrorbirds are mentioned i looked up moa since it sounds pretty to me but eatible bird is a bad name for sutch a creature of fear so i lookd at some family creatures in the history and found Rok here is some wiki on it (Rok is the danish name)

Wow, you all have come up with some great names already! I’m still not sure what I’m going to pick overall, but I’m definitely sure that it will be something suggested here. There is a reason I didn’t just re-name it Mazzranache, and I thought I should mention that. It basically comes down to the fact that I don’t like naming my pets what Blizzard named them in the first place. It feels too much like having a Warlock!
You could always weave it into the story – as part of the full taming of Mazzranache, you had to give him a new name as a sign of removing his power.
Without the name that struck fear into the heart of your clan, your clanmates would forget what an accomplishment taming him was and would only see the silly pink bird strutting along behind you.

What a wonderful tale of taming! I have no ideas on names, but I do have to applaude what (at least to me) has been the best tale yet. So much was said in so few words.

I just like the idea of Grizzlehoof being so disgusted by the gangly pink bird following him around that he renamed him out of bitterness. xD
You could simply run things like Pinky or Flamingo through the tauren language translator till something cool comes out. That’s how i named my tauren warrior.
How about just Mazzranache? its a rare bird i like to keep the name it would be nice for rp if you just keep it as Mazzranache Example

My hunter still has his pink tallstrider at level 70. I named him Peck, since he did quite a lot of that while I was trying to tame him. With a few exceptions, I’ve always tried to name my pets something related to how they look, sound, or act.
From an RP perspective, I do think it’s better to give him a new name. A new name would symbolize his change in his life when he became your companion.
“e-qua tsa-ta-ga” roughly is cherokee for big chicken
“u-tlv-ta tsu-na” roughly is cherokee for sharp foot
“u-lu-nu-hi a-da-nv-do” roughly is cherokee for feather spirit
make them what you will if you like them
