Ghostcrawler’s Arcania: Auto-Cast Spiders

Raptor in motocycle sidebar by KxaraIt’s that time again! Time for me to be lazy by rounding up stuff Ghostcrawler said instead of saying something myself!

I’ve also grabbed a couple of posts from Maaven of the PTR forum this time.

(Also check out the thread linked from this cool sketch to the right. Very nice!)

When asked about the change in Spider’s Bite from bonus crit damage to bonus crit chance, Ghoscrawler said:

The damage bonus ended up being a pretty trivial amount of dps IIRC.

And apparently we have a forum suggestion to thank for the new bone spider:

I just want to point out that someone on this forum made that request.

I’m not saying that you should shut up and be grateful because we gave you a SPIDER(!), but I did want you to realize that we read your posts. Your requests and feedback do help us make decisions.

In a thread on the beta shaman forum, Ghostcrawler mentioned the problems with pets’ auto-cast skills:

Pets always showing up in autocast is annoying especially with so many pets now. We’re trying to decide whether to fix it or overhaul the whole autocast system.

Personally, I hope they decide soon!

I also found a few interesting pet-related posts by Maaven, the new PTR forum Blizzard person. Maaven is doing a very good job keeping the PTR forum useful by sorting issues, requesting more info on bugs when necessary, and moderating non-useful posts.

(Note that the links to these posts may stop working since the PTR forum is now being cleaned up on a nearly daily basis.)

Regarding a potential bug with the level requirement for Rank 2 of Serenity Dust:

I earned the ability on a Lv. 18 pet. It is possible third party sources do not have an accurate representation of when abilities are supposed to be earned. Regardless, this will be investigated. Thanks!

Aside: As much as I love the new auto-leveling pets, I do wish there was some way for me to gather data on lower level pets without having to have 13 characters carefully arranged between levels 10 and 80. (Yes, it would take 13 to cover all the pet levels. I made a spreadsheet to prove it to myself.) Right now I am relying on spot-checking data-mined information, which does not make me a satisfied camper.

Regarding a potential bug with Rabid not auto-casting, Maaven clarified that:

Rabid will only autocast when the pet is being attacked.

Well that’s good to know!

OMG! I have a chance to help? What to you want to know in the 25-30 range Mania? I got way too much free time on my hands and a massive need for something to fill it. Go on, make my day; please? (Im on the PTR Btw 8D)

i sure hope they don’t get rid of autocast… i personally like autocast a lot, but i like to be able to set what i want autocast and what i don’t.

*sigh* I guess I’m gonna have to manually cast Rabid. One less spot on my bar…

If they rewrite the autocast code, I would love it if they put in an autocast focus priority system in place. I know they want us to make decisions, but I have enough cooldowns and resources to keep track of. I believe this is one of those things they said they wouldn’t do, but they seem to be now doing quite a few things they said they wouldn’t do…

The way I see it, were gonna end up with macros that include pet rotations (growl, focus dump) and individual abilities (species skill, intervene, etc.) – and we will end up with all macros and no more manual weaving… Which could probably work ok. … Depending how blizz implements things of course.

  8. sara - October 7th, 2008 @ 10:38 am UTC

Clarification: include pet rotations with our own – the new 3:2 will have growl etc. as well as our shots n’ all that.

anyone notice the annoying pet Ai with AoE skills? like the sporebats and gorillas? they’re family skill doesnt seem to go off unless they’re more than one enemy in their area.. which is pretty annoying.. that thunderstomp is extra DPS and the sporebat in particular. the DoT can help against rogues and such.. i end up having to turn EVERYTHING off and spamming it just to have it go off.. and it doenst always work..

I’ll fish around on my character list across the servers, I know I have a spattering of low level hunter alts out there =)

    @sara
Assuming they fix the autocast issues, we shouldn’t need any macros. Shot macros were needed when our shots could clip auto shot to ensure proper timing(and stubborn people like myself never used them anyway). That has been removed, so its simply of what to fire in what order… and its still based off of steady shot spam.
And for those that want it one button easy, a /castsequence should be all you need to step you through the shots you want in the order you want them in.

Great…another friggin spider…and a disgusting one at that. Oh well, still cool that they got the idea from a forum suggestion. Anyways, I wish I could help test the auto-pet leveling thing, but I can’t get into the PTR for some stupid reason. Anyway, I hope they get most of it sorted out and make patch 3.0 live soon. It’s only like a month till the release anyway. I still plan on getting my Silithid and Core Hound the minute my computer downloads the patch.

Sorry if this does not fit in to the conversation, but does Readiness work with Bestial Wrath? I have never ventured out of the BM tree very far but now with Readiness 21 points away I am thinking about it over Beast Mastery.
I was thinking of a macro for leveling that used pets spells, my trinkets, BW and Readiness so I never missed a CD. Is Readiness worth giving up 4 points for my pets talents?

I don’t get what Ghost Crawler was saying, about “auto-cast skills”. And that kinda sucks, for DpS, about Rabid.

  15. Foresti - October 7th, 2008 @ 3:06 pm UTC

He isn’t talking about removing autocast. That would be ridiculous. He’s talking about redoing/improving the code that runs the auto cast system.

  16. Nimizar - October 7th, 2008 @ 6:01 pm UTC

Steady Shot macros are still useful – they make sure your first auto shot goes off at the beginning of your first steady shot cast, instead of at the end.

Spreadsheet? You’re kidding – it’s too easy to prove with simple claculation. :P

First, with new system, you cannot have tamed pet below level 5, so you have 76 pet levels to test. Second, each hunter can test 6 pet levels (his/her level and up to 5 levels below). 76 divided by 6 and rounded up gives 13.

If the whole bone spider things is true then some one on beta needs to start asking about other pets. To the best of my knowledge however the only two models in the game that there are no tamable examples of are the Sunblade and Dawnblade Dragonhawk. There are a couple of others like the Ghost Wolf, but those I can understand since they are part of scripted events.
