Name That Pet: Darknez’ Gorilla

Name That Pet: Darknez & GorillaFinal Name: Avalanche

Gorillas are certainly the belle of the ball right now in the beta, and I fully expect them to blossom on live as well after Patch 3.0.

Today we have a request from a hunter who is getting prepared early!

With the changes coming in WotLK, I was preparing myself in advance. Knowing that stabled pets appear to auto-level now, I’ve gone and tamed myself a tanking pet.

I’ve already got a Cunning spider (Zarakh) and a Ferocious cat (Bhag’thera) and I just needed a Tenacious pet to complete the set.

I had been after Uhk’loc for a while, and now I know of what’s coming I thought it was the best time to grab her!

Trouble is, I usually have no problem thinking of a name for a pet. However as Uhk’loc is a rare, I didn’t want to just call it Bananas!

I went through a few names in the guild to no avail … the usual ones came up (Donkeykong, Nanas) and a few others (Snowflake, Thunder, Lightning, Blizzard, Snowstorm).

I’m not after anything silly, but I can’t decide on a name thats suitable for it.

Darknez is very loyal to the right pet. Bhaggie has been with her ever since she was able to tame it. Currently a marksman, the exotics may or may not entice me to change specs …

Isn’t that a great screenshot? And what an attractive gorilla! Okay, okay — enough drooling. *grin* On with the suggestions!

[Update]

I went the traditional route and searched for names that meant snow.
If your lovely gorilla is a girl..

    EIRA
    EIRWEN
    GWYNEIRA
    YUKI
    YUKIKO

I must admit you inspired me to go and grab Uhk’loc right this moment.

  2. Darknez - October 1st, 2008 @ 5:38 pm EDT

Thanks for posting it Mania :)

Harleigh - I think it’s meant to be the mate of U’cha (who I assume was male) - so I think it’s female! :)
Guess it’s down to the player - I try to keep my pet genders accurate as possible ^.^

Glad it’s inspired you :) I’m very happy with her.

  3. Harleigh - October 1st, 2008 @ 5:44 pm EDT

I’m glad to see another player does that. I thought I was pretty silly to keep my Rak’shiri a girl. Then again unless it’s a lion with a mane most of my cats have been females either way.

  4. Boarwood - October 1st, 2008 @ 5:57 pm EDT

Well, naming Gorillas isn’t quite my forte, but i think something Yeti-related would be nice here. What first pops into my mind is Wendy after the Wendigos in Dun Morogh (and the better Wendigos in Northrend), but you could get creative with that. Maybe something like a spinoff of Bigfoot, like Maxiped. Other than that, I can’t supply much help, but i wish you luck with your apescapades.

  5. korbn - October 1st, 2008 @ 5:59 pm EDT

I have had a gorilla from stanglehorn for years named Wankertanker.
he was quite famous, when he was my first choice pet. People tended to remember my gorilla before me for some reason ;)

Seems like he will get a revival soon, can’t wait …

  6. Evandelle - October 1st, 2008 @ 6:10 pm EDT

lol my mages name is Eirwen ^^

  7. Evandelle - October 1st, 2008 @ 6:11 pm EDT

    I also second Yuki…very cute imo :)

  8. Evandelle - October 1st, 2008 @ 6:11 pm EDT

    or maybe Yukionna?

  9. Sentrakh - October 1st, 2008 @ 6:29 pm EDT

    Kopaka or Nuju?

  10. irwinn - October 1st, 2008 @ 6:31 pm EDT

I would go for something along the lines of evolution / devolution…

My Uhk is named Darwinn… kind of a play of my in game name (Irwinn) and Charles Darwin who was the founder of the modern theory of evolution through the process of natural selection.

hope this helps in some sort of way. :)and congrats on taming it.

  11. irwinn - October 1st, 2008 @ 6:33 pm EDT

“but i think something Yeti-related would be nice here” -Boarwood

haha yeah… only problem is the name Yeti is “reserved” that was one of my first choices.

  12. Selesti - October 1st, 2008 @ 6:36 pm EDT

I use alot of Japanese and Native American names for my pets (on all 3 hunters of mine), so I looked up a few:

    CATORI: Hopi name meaning “spirit.”
    GALILAHI: Cherokee name meaning “attractive.”
    HURIT: Algonquin name meaning “beautiful.”
    ISTAS: snow
KASA: Hopi name meaning “dressed in furs.”
MISAE: Osage name meaning “white sun.”
    SOOLEAWA: Algonquin name meaning “silver.”

The Japanese names are a bit on the annoying side at times, but maybe these Native American ones will help out. They certainly aren’t as commonly used for naming pets (or characters for that matter).

  13. Xeonio of Silver Hand - October 1st, 2008 @ 6:39 pm EDT

    Avalanche

  14. Redlocke - October 1st, 2008 @ 6:40 pm EDT

I named my Gorilla “Charlton” for the actor who uttered the famous lines “Keep your stinking paws off me you damned dirty ape!”

  15. Boarwood - October 1st, 2008 @ 7:01 pm EDT

I definitely like Redlocke’s idea the best. @irwinn, why the heck is yeti reserved!? lol. i played a gnome mage named Irwin for like two days before i realized people might read it as “I R Win”.

  16. Harleigh - October 1st, 2008 @ 7:05 pm EDT

I’ve been camping the spawn location for the white gorilla for a while now. I just got cussed out by a priest for “messing with his quest mobs” and he/she said “go do some level 70 stuff”

lol i’m not killing anything im just shadowmelded waiting for her to spawn.

  17. Featherkitty - October 1st, 2008 @ 7:27 pm EDT

Well you dont like silly because i thought you could do ImWithStupid if you wanted to do silly.

  18. Infernov - October 1st, 2008 @ 8:07 pm EDT

I if I got that gorilla, I’d defninately name it “Hyouden” meaning “field of eternal snow” (atleast thats what the translater says <_<)

Infact I might have to grab my self one of those! I never really liked gorillas, but that is a very beautiful pet!

  19. Harleigh - October 1st, 2008 @ 8:53 pm EDT

Welcome to the club, Infernov. hehe

  20. Nimizar - October 1st, 2008 @ 9:14 pm EDT

In the vein of Redlocke’s suggestion, something like “Hesta” may work. Norse is also a nice source of ideas when thinking along snow themed lines - Bifrost, Kyrie (dropping the ‘Val’ from the beginning of valkyrie, but also part of the latin phrase for “Lord have mercy”).

You could always call her Grendel, too :)

  21. Selesti - October 1st, 2008 @ 9:44 pm EDT

Except that Grendel was a male. :D

  22. shir_kirakira - October 1st, 2008 @ 9:46 pm EDT

If I had a female gorilla, I’d totally name it Fossey.

A male gorilla–probably something like Heston.

And if I were going to be completely silly, something like Rumpscratcher or Itchysides.

  23. hyena84 - October 1st, 2008 @ 10:02 pm EDT

for some reason it reminds me of blueberry slushies and other frozen treats.like yogurt or milkshake…

  24. Boarwood - October 1st, 2008 @ 10:16 pm EDT

I like Grendel! or angelina, for grendel’s mom. =^D

  25. Sukulatae - October 1st, 2008 @ 10:17 pm EDT

    Lightz? To match your name.

  26. Jindar - October 1st, 2008 @ 10:22 pm EDT

Faye, after Faye Wray, the actress who played King Kong’s human captive/love-interest in the original “King Kong”.

  27. redmest - October 1st, 2008 @ 10:22 pm EDT

For some reason i seee a gorilla and think of the name

    “Craps”

  28. Bruce Baugh - October 1st, 2008 @ 11:36 pm EDT

I have him too, and named mine Sagarmatha. It’s the Nepalese name for Mt. Everest, and means literally “the head of the sky”. Seemed right for something so big and white.

  29. Kohari - October 1st, 2008 @ 11:37 pm EDT

For some reason when I see a Gorilla and it’s move, “Thunderstomp”, only one name pops in my mind…

    “Curbstomp”!

But really, from the way the picture portraits Uhk’loc, I guess it would look like a “Snow Gorila”. With that said you could try to come up with a variant that utilizes…

    “Yuki” which means “Snow”
    “Shiroi” which means “White”
“Gorira” which means “Gorilla” (No one would really want to use this, right?)
    “Hogo” which means “Protection”
    “Nenchakusei” which means “Tenacity”

But these are just me and my Japanese picks. :P

  30. Nimizar - October 2nd, 2008 @ 12:46 am EDT

Regardless of the gender of the original, I think “Grendel” is gender neutral enough that I don’t see any problems with using the name for a female pet.

  31. Harleigh - October 2nd, 2008 @ 1:19 am EDT

I had a female dog named Grendel. I think it is gender neutral like nimizar says.

  32. Gazak - October 2nd, 2008 @ 1:26 am EDT

I’ve had Uhk’loc since level 53, and he’s still my favourite. I named him Darunia after the King of the Gorons in the Zelda video game… Un-Goro Crater-Goron-Gorilla… made sense at the time. But yours is a chick, so how about:
Yaga, as in the Baba Yaga, a Russian witch (and Yaga kind of recalls Yeti)
Ymir, the frost giant that the Norse god Odin killed and whose body parts he used to create the world (again has Yeti connotations, sort of)
Lucy, after the famous Australopithecus fossil

I’m liking Yaga… Good luck though, I love this guy. I wish they’d give him some jumping animation though.

  33. Mania - October 2nd, 2008 @ 2:04 am EDT

I once dated a guy named Grendel.

  34. Niabi - October 2nd, 2008 @ 2:42 am EDT

    Neiva or Neva: means “snow”.
    Ivory: (self-explainatory).
    Fiona: means “fair-skinned”.
    Kezia: means “fair”.
    Calla or Kala: means “beautiful”.
    Kanani: means “the beautiful one”

  35. Kady - October 2nd, 2008 @ 2:46 am EDT

    Elyxi
    Elevi
    Yanka
    Jolie
    Yoki

  36. Talaaya - October 2nd, 2008 @ 2:51 am EDT

I recently tamed this fantastic gorilla, and decided to name it after the yeti in the stop motion animated TV special “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”:

    Bumble!

Now if only my hunter’s name was Yukon Cornelius!

  37. Cotytto - October 2nd, 2008 @ 4:06 am EDT

    Gullah

From the Hyborian era,Gorilla God worshiped by the Picts,”hairy one who lies on the moon” from the old R.E. Howard books.

  38. Pennelope - October 2nd, 2008 @ 4:58 am EDT

hmm… what about not call your great tank pet

Shiroga? (mearning: White fang in japanese)
i think it fits it good since she is white and yeah got fang

    or what about

Ginowagi? (Mearning: Silver coat in japanese)

  39. Tahlian - October 2nd, 2008 @ 8:00 am EDT

I’m not great at gorilla names, so let me offer the names of the gorillas we’ve had in the past at our local zoo:

    Kabako - called “Joe” informally
    Pongi - called “Susie” informally
Babec - just called “Babec,” but was also, if I recall correctly, the first gorilla in the world to be the successful recipient of a pacemaker device. Babec was a really cool gorilla. We miss him muchly around here.

  40. Thorikson - October 2nd, 2008 @ 8:29 am EDT

I tamed this sweet looking ape shortly before BC hit. I needed a good tank and Bjarn just wasn’t cutting it for me any more. Most of the time when I name a rare pet, I name it with it’s lore name so everyone knows where it came from but this time I changed it up a little. I thought long and hard about a proper name, going through the Japanese names and such, before finally deciding on Moonshine. Every one of these that I see in the BGs, including the 2 others on my realm, are named around something snowish. Not very original nowadays. If I did it again, I would go with something of African descent I think, Swahili maybe. Anyway, I love Thunderstomp and really love the new CD change to it, but overall the tenacity tree leaves me wanting. As soon as 3.0 hits, Moonshine goes to the stable and Blacksting gets to ride shotgun with me.

  41. Joonces - October 2nd, 2008 @ 9:19 am EDT

    @Talaaya

I have this gorilla and named it Oddjob, however I always thought he looked like “Bumble” and wondered why I didn’t go with that. Glad to see I’m not the only one!

And for me, yes it’s a “he”.

  42. Rudda - October 2nd, 2008 @ 9:42 am EDT

My Gorillas have all been named after one of my childhood heros. Curious George!
I know George is kinda “silly” and its a male name. But you could alter it to Georgia, or Georgina or something like that.

  43. Dweezill - October 2nd, 2008 @ 10:53 am EDT

Hey, I have Uhk’Lok for a while now, and I waited quite some time to name him. Like you, I wanted to name him something “special” becuase it took forever to tame him. He is, by far, the toughest tame I have come across (so far). Anyway, after playing with him for a while, it started to feel kinda like I was a mobster, and Uhk was a hired body guard… so, I ended up decidding between two names. Bruno and Knuckles are two common body guard names, so those were my choices. Seeing how Uhk walks with his knuckles, I chose Knuckles. So, those would be my two offerings:

    Knuckles
    Bruno

  44. Druff - October 2nd, 2008 @ 12:26 pm EDT

    Granilla

  45. Mythan - October 2nd, 2008 @ 2:20 pm EDT

I think with it’s coloration, a name with a blue or white theme would be nice.
Azure is a good springboard for blue. Azurewind, Azureguard, Azurekin
Shiro, Japanese for White, has a great sound to it. KazeShiro (White wind)
A lot of my pets get simple title like names. Yojimbo, Ronin, Warden

  46. Sigrdrífa - October 2nd, 2008 @ 2:33 pm EDT

@Dweezill, lol, wait till you try for “Gutripper”, then it will prob be the “Spirit Beast” if it is still tameable after LK comes out.

@Darknez, sorry Hon, all I can think of is “Bubba”. I know, I know, not very good.

And to my friends here, In RL, I had to put down my oldest ferret “Miss Alpha Beta” last night. She was 8 years & 4 months old. The meds she was on were not helping her anymore. She was such a frail little old gurl. :(

  47. Shadowteer - October 2nd, 2008 @ 3:04 pm EDT

I’d say “Blizzard”, but you can’t name pets Blizzard in WoW. I don’t get why Blizzard would make it so, but it is.

As for a name….well, i’m terrible at thinking of names, but I named my white tiger “Isbre”, meaning Iceberg in icelandic I believe.

  48. Goofball Jones - October 2nd, 2008 @ 3:21 pm EDT

Me…I’d name him O’Brien or Willis. The special effects pioneer that was behind the original 1933 King Kong, Willis O’Brien.

I know, you won’t…but he holds a special place in my heart. Baring that, I’d go with Yuki as that’s pretty cute. I like short names.

  49. Mitsuhide - October 2nd, 2008 @ 3:23 pm EDT

Name him Optimus Primal, and make a macro that has him yell “Optimus Primal: MAXIMIZE!” when you send him into battle.

Gonna do something similar with my Wasp when I hit the 60’s, name him Waspinator and have him go “Wazzzzpinator: TERRORIIIIIZZZZZZZE!”

  50. Corrado - October 2nd, 2008 @ 4:20 pm EDT

I have had U’Cha tamed for almost a year, now, and… I have always just left him named Ucha. I particularly enjoy taming named pets (Ironjaw, Araga, etc.) and just leaving them with their given name. It might be boring, but it feels somehow authentic for my Hunter to have those pet names.

So, I would suggest Uhkloc. :)

  51. Tashi - October 2nd, 2008 @ 5:00 pm EDT

Grats on taming the rare! I’ve always loved gorillas. I don’t have one right now, but I used to have one named Takahashi.

    I suggest:
    Yonoshia
    Shania
    Noviani
    Sia
    and Celia.

    Good luck naming this beauty!

  52. Jakalth - October 2nd, 2008 @ 5:16 pm EDT

You could always call him/her: storhvid (stor hvid) Danish for great white.

  53. Angie - October 2nd, 2008 @ 5:17 pm EDT

    Grumpyface because it looks grumpy.

but serious namewise - I agree with tashi, i like the name Noviani

  54. Firewing - October 2nd, 2008 @ 5:56 pm EDT

Blitzkrieg! Which is Lighting War in German, I believe. It’s more a make name, then female, so that may not fit.

    How about….

    Luna?

    Dog? If you’re feeling weird.

    Fern?

    Frost?

    Winter?

    Echo?

  55. Lucutu - October 2nd, 2008 @ 6:02 pm EDT

54th post WOOT! as i usually say i think any pet with fur could be named Scruffles it doesnt really mean anyhtign in particular but i think its cool like scruffy fur or sumthing Also thirding Yuki if its a girl or if u wna make it a guy yuko or Yukiko (i named my wolf scruffles but dumped him for a ravager at 60 [he remained at lvl 59 for a long time so i got rid of em, big mistake i miss em] and also my bat which i solo tamed from Kara)

  56. Dweezill - October 2nd, 2008 @ 11:06 pm EDT

While we are on the Gorilla subject, I have a question. I was thinking about this when it came time to name my Uhk’Lok, but couldn;t remember the answer… so here goes. What is the name of the Gorilla in Edgar Allan Poe’s “Murder On The Rue Morgue”? Couldn;t remember the name, but that would be an awesome name for any Gorilla.

  57. Shirate - October 3rd, 2008 @ 1:05 am EDT

I always like naming african pets (Hyenas, gorillas etc.) With there swahili name, or a name in swahili. Sokwe is the name for gorilla, and there are a few for snow or blizzard. Theluji- Snow, Kimbunga- Storm, Vuma- Thunder, Umeme- Lightning. Those are a few. I like kimbunga, and Umeme.

  58. Shirate - October 3rd, 2008 @ 1:07 am EDT

    P.S.

I think since your name is darnez, storm would be good. It’s like the darkness before the storm, kinda cool imo.

  59. Yog - October 3rd, 2008 @ 1:59 am EDT

    I’m thinkin’:

    -Tundra, Arcturus, Glacier, Hoarfrost
    -Velgr, Crasher, Lucia

  60. Pepp - October 3rd, 2008 @ 2:35 am EDT

I just love Elvis for a Gorilla… or Alvis, god of thunder…

  61. Jashin - October 3rd, 2008 @ 3:23 am EDT

Hmm a name for a Gorilla thats non-silly and female…..

    Kana
    Shasuka (Sha-Ska)
    Chloe
    Kanoko
That’s all i got for 3:30 am lol i’ll think of something later

  62. Darknez - October 3rd, 2008 @ 4:31 am EDT

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions so far. I will sit down over the next few days and try and extract all the names and see what I like.

  63. Wolfington - October 3rd, 2008 @ 7:03 am EDT

Wow, good timing on this post. I have a white gorrila needing a name atm :-)

  64. Araeli - October 3rd, 2008 @ 1:16 pm EDT

    Jumana - Silver pearl :)

  65. Mike - October 3rd, 2008 @ 8:25 pm EDT

I grabbed this cool little Gorilla the other day after camping her for 3 days. Named her * Grumpy *

My ravagers name is * Grouchy * , I am trying to keep the theme going .

  66. John - October 3rd, 2008 @ 10:42 pm EDT

How about “Fuji”, kinda non specific in the gender area, cuz next to you she looks like a mountain. That’s what made me think of Mt. Fuji in Japan, and she’s a snow white color, just like the snow cap on Mt. Fuji. That’s wat i’d nam,e her neway.

  67. Chilkoot - October 3rd, 2008 @ 11:51 pm EDT

A huge, ultra-white ape? There can be only one name:

    HonkeyKong

  68. Wolfington - October 4th, 2008 @ 9:32 am EDT

    Brightfire
    Cinderheart
    Icesong
    Snowsong
    Starsong

    might be nice names.

  69. Wolfington - October 4th, 2008 @ 9:41 am EDT

Utara = brother in indonesian, I know it’s a girl, but oh well :-P

  70. Shirate - October 5th, 2008 @ 3:38 am EDT

HAHA, Chilkoot wins, that’s the funniest stuf ever.

  71. Snapshot - October 5th, 2008 @ 11:53 am EDT

Oh yeah… As someone stated above.. Avalanche is a win. :)

  72. Kayb - October 6th, 2008 @ 5:44 am EDT

    hmmm, names…

    Avalanche <—- winner
    Icefury
    Arcton <—- winner
    Crevasse/Crevas
    Iceback
    Frostbite
    Frostpunch

  73. Eidokar - October 6th, 2008 @ 11:02 am EDT

Since im currently living in Greenland i thought ill give my heads up on some greenlandic possibilities for a name. I know there isn’t many gorillas up here, but here it goes…

    Aput: Greenlandic word for snow
    Qanik: snowflake
    Ukioq: winter
    Qaqortoq: white
    Akisooq: animal
    Nujuartaq: wild

    Hope it’s helpful.

  74. Thranos - October 6th, 2008 @ 12:59 pm EDT

Name her Isis. it is easy to say and short and simple.

  75. Darknez - October 6th, 2008 @ 2:59 pm EDT

@56 Dweezill - A quick search on Google says the Gorilla’s name was Eric

@Everyone : - I’m pretty sure I’ve decided on a name, and thanks go out to you all for your epic suggestions.

I really like the Avalanche suggestion, and I’m going with that ;)
I’ll upload a new photo later showing off her new name!

    Thanks again,
    Darknez.

Lovely choice, Darknez! I added the pic of you and Avalanche to the post — hope you don’t mind. :>

  78. Syris - October 6th, 2008 @ 8:06 pm EDT

aww, i got in too late for my suggestion but i had one of those gorilla’s a long time ago when i USED to play wow, i called mine Goliath. It seemed fitting at the time.. (masculine name mind you)

  79. Darknez - October 7th, 2008 @ 5:56 am EDT

Thanks to you all, and thanks especially to Mania whom without I would not be able to have accomplished this.

Diablo forced his way into the picture… little devil!
