Beta/PTR Build 9014

Blizzard updated the Public Test Realms and the WotLK beta realms with build 3.0.2 (9014) this evening. I took a quick look at pet skills and talents and found no obvious differences between last build and this one — which is good because it means we can concentrate on looking for new beasts to tame. *grin* I’m headed out to do that now, and I’ll let you know if I find anything. And you should do the same!

[Update #1] Unfortunately ex-caster pets still seem to be a bit low on DPS. (Thanks to e-syringe for checking that for us.)

  1. any news yet of a new spirit beast? lol I am looking forward to the release of LK, so many new things to tame.
    (first post?!?)

  2. Oooh!

I’m going to go do a quick n’ dirty study to see if Caster pets are at all different!

Going to steal that other person’s idea of using Wind Serpents, ’cause they’re the easiest ones to find at my level…I transferred my character when she was only 56.

  3. *crosses fingers* PLEASE let blizz have made the silithid wasps tameable as wasp-pets… it’s SO lazy that they didn’t.

  4. I went to go solo Ramparts on PTR and as I was doing my thing, the mobs were knocking my pet around like a pingpong ball! I mean, it was funny, but my wolf usually didn’t get bothered by knockbacks.

Did this happen this patch or in a earlier patch and I was just an unaware idiot?

To be on topic, the wolves in Ramparts are still not tamable. Booo.

  5. ^ I should explain that I was just too lazy to take pictures and post them someplace online.

Also, I’m having the weird problem where the Wind Serpent polygons are not showing properly and they appear blacked out. The person who did this during the last patch had that happen, too. Wonder if it’s something to do with the copying of the beta files?

  6. Thanks for checking that, e-syringe.

I had that problem with black bits on wind serpents … hmm … a long time ago, anyway. I don’t know if it went away or if I just moved to a new computer. :>

  7. Ferocity pets – wolves and cats anyway, seem to be missing the talented ability ‘charge’ now, but my moth Aspatha still has swoop.

  8. Liet/Ansawa: Huh! I didn’t notice that before, but it looks like you are correct. I reported this both in-game and on the forums; let’s hope they get it fixed quickly.

e-syringe: Unfortunate but good to know.

nobbie: Nothing I’ve seen yet, but my laptop keeps shutting down on me. It doesn’t like the beta these days. :/

  9. Wyndigo, with the addition of movement skills that knock people around, I think nearly everything can and will be popped up.

  10. Lucky you who are in the PTR. When I’m trying to copy my character or download the client, I just get to the “This page is unaviable right now, lololol”-page.

About the caster pets, 3% less dps is not horrible, I think. Of course, it would be great if they made ‘em identical to noncasters.

  11. Not to sound snotty QuiSiLoR but that isn’t really news to us. This site actually, if I’m not totally mistaken, broke the news of the first spirit beast with help of the regular posters.

Thanks for the refresher thou. I just hope another site isn’t trying to take credit for discovering something that we first discovered close to a week ago.

  12. well someone posted asking about spirit pets and as thats the only one thats currently avail that either petopia or wor knows about I thought id lin k it as you said as a refresher.
I hope more of these type pets are avail the looks are great

  13. There are actually a ton of undocumented hunter changes from this most recent beta patch. Found on mmo-champion.com

    Beast Mastery

    * Aspect of the Wild (Rank 4) now increases Nature resistance by 130. (Up from 70)
    * Aspect of the Viper changed to : The hunter takes on the aspect of the viper, causing ranged attacks to regenerate mana but reducing your total damage done by 50%. Mana gained is based on the speed of your ranged weapon.
    * Aspect of the Beast has been changed and re-added to the game. The hunter takes on the aspects of a beast, becoming untrackable and increasing melee attack power of the hunter and the hunter’s pet by 10%. Only one Aspect can be active at a time.

    Marksmanship

    * Aimed shot mana cost reduced from 11% of base mana to 8%. Casting time changed from 2.5 sec to instant. Cooldown increased from 6 seconds to 10 seconds. Damage reduced to about 25% of the old value. (Lowered from 1570 to 408 for Rank 9)
    * Kill Shot damage now deals 200% weapon damage (down from 205%). Additional damage nerfed as well. (Down from [ 40% of RAP + 1200 ] to [ 40% of RAP + 650 ] for rank 3)
    * Multi-Shot mana cost has been increased from 8% of base mana to 9%.
    * *New Spell* – Fires a Black Arrow at the target, slowing the target’s movement speed by 70%. While the movement speed effect holds, the damage done by your ranged shots are increased by 15% on the target. Lasts for 6 sec. (6% of base mana, 5-35 yd range, Instant cast, 12 sec cooldown)

    Survival

    * Freezing Arrow now breaks on any damage. (Old – The ice has a chance to break on damage.)
    * Freezing Trap now breaks on any damage. (Old – The ice has a chance to break on damage.)

    Talents
    Beast Mastery

    * Kindred Spirits does not stack with other movement speed increasing effects anymore.

    Marksmanship

    * Readiness has been removed from Survival Tree and moved to Tier 5 of Marksmanship Tree.
    * Scatter Shot has been removed from Marksmanship Tree and moved to Tier 3 of Survival Tree
    * Marked for Death now increases your damage done by your shots and the damage done by your pet’s special abilities by 4% on marked targets. (Down from 8%)
    * Focused Aim doesn’t affect Aimed Shot anymore and now also increases your chance to hit by 1/2/3%.

    Survival

    * Readiness has been removed from Survival Tree and moved to Tier 5 of Marksmanship Tree.
    * Scatter Shot has been removed from Marksmanship Tree and moved to Tier 3 of Survival Tree
    * Point of No Escape has been changed from 3 to 2 points and now affects Freezing Arrow. Critical strike chance increased changed to 3/6% (up from 2/4/6%)
    * Surefooted has been moved from Tier 4 to Tier 2 and doesn’t increase hit chance anymore.
    * Lock and Load now has a 2/4/6% chance to proc on periodic damage. (Down from 5/10/15%)
    * Trap Mastery has been moved from Tier 3 to Tier 9 and now increases the duration by 30% of both Freezing and Frost Trap.
    * T.N.T. has been moved from Tier 2 to Tier 4.

    Glyphs

    * Glyph – Aimed Shot – Reduces the mana cost of your Aimed Shot ability by 20%. (Old – Decreases the cast time of Aimed Shot by 0.5 sec.)

  14. Can someone pls try the new Aspect of the Viper?

In it’s previous version it gained mana equal to 2x[weapon speed]%.

It really worked well enough to replenish all the mana pool. Does it work that well now and how much mana does it regain with every attack?

  15. @Quendil

I just got off of playing the beta, and AotV works with just the base weapon speed. That said, I was getting 78-79 mana back per shot with a 2.1 speed bow, and with one fight I could get my mana back up to at least 60-75% even spamming Arcane Shot. Aspect Mastery drops the reduced damage to 40% as well, which helps keep the damage up and even lets the pet hold aggro better.

Speaking of pets, I also went to Azuremyst Isle to get a moth (lvl 40 Belf Hunter), and HOLY MOLY it was a freaking beast.

    2 points in Cobra Reflexes
    1 point in Dive
    2 points in Bloodthirsty
    1 point in Boar’s Speed

All I have to say is, with a Ferocity pet you will NEVER have to feed it. Bloodthirsty brought his happiness up FAST, and the healing almost nulled the damage he was taking (and Spirit Bond helped too). Two-on-one didn’t bother him much either, he was healing himself nicely (it seems to be bonkers with Serenity Dust, I always had to activate it myself).

When the patch goes live, come hell or high water I’m going to Azuremyst and getting another moth (boo for PvP servers, though, this is not gonna be fun).

  16. Mania-

I did notice something important to pass along. The last few times, my pets did not get a refund on their talent points, but this time they did.

Wyverns are still not tameable, I have to say.

  17. On the subject of PTR/Beta, though not on the subject of hunters, is anyone else having problems with downloading the pre-patch data. My downloader gets to about 5% and then shuts itself down. Anyone else having this difficulty, or have any ideas?

  18. And the XP needed for pets to level up has been reduced in some way.
My pet was 40%ish to level 73 before patch and 18% to level 74 after.
    Finally!

  19. Note that those MMO champion “undocumented changes” include some datamined items that are incorrect (most significantly, Black Arrow isn’t an ability they are planning to give to hunters, and it isn’t on the trainers in-game).

  20. Black Arrow has been in the data files since closed beta…it pops up every once in awhile. Be nice if they finally implemented it.

  21. Did anyone else notice that the hunter pets are freaking out since this patch, frequently biting the air and attacking “phantoms” although no attack command has been given? Very annoying. I checked, and it has nothing to do with your or your pet’s talent point distribution or class.

  22. I just tamed a level 69 pet, and the XP required for it to level up to 70 is 71,700 XP. I honestly don’t remember exactly how much it needed before, but I do remember it being a LOT more than that.

  23. @Boarwood

You need to sign up for a “gravatar”
google it and sign up for a free account, then use the email from your gravatar when you make a comment here and it will use the icon you provided.

  24. I went and tamed a Vicious Teromoth to check it out. But as I soon discovered, Warden Treelos keeps killing it with one Moonfire all the time. So if any hunter want this as a pet, make sure you do all quests there before taming one, as it will always be killed by this guy.

  25. Ugh, just saw that Dive now triggers a cooldown on Swoop, preventing them both from being used one after the other. The only time my pet use Swoop now is if it’s within range to use it. Other wise Dive over write it all the time.

  26. Aspect of the Beast was never removed, I have been testing it for about a week or so. There is only about a 2 to 4 DPS increase between Beast and Hawk. Only thing it does well is give the hunter a good melee DPS boost, so for melee hunters, not bad. There was a suggestion on the Beta boards about just adding Beast to Monkey, which would be great for melee hunters IMO. But doubt it will happen.

  27. Just to confirm, Pet exp to level has been reduced from ~25% of the hunter’s exp to level down to 10%. I’ve seen it in game and GC has confirmed it on the beta board.
Now to just get out there and see how much it helps.

  28. So, it looks like they finally implemented the change for pet hit? Pet hit caps out at 9% and gains +hit equal to the Hunter’s.

  29. Mania I love your site and blog but this is the first time im posting here.. Im a pvp hunter but I really like the pet aspect of our class (too bad I have to stick with scorpids in arena =/) so im always checking your site.
The reason im posting is cause I dont have a beta key and im curious to check if the twilight serpents from nagrand are tameable (I really like their model) I guess the odds are against it but since its a new patch =D
    Any info about them?
    Thank you..
    Razokk

  30. poopoopad: Note the Cannot Be Tamed in the Beast Lore. But I’ll get it added as an untameable. (Actually I think someone e-mailed me about it already but I still haven’t caught up with my inbox.)
