Beta Taming Challenge: Snorts

Update: Niio took up the challenge and succeeded. Way to go, Niio!

I have a taming challenge for any enterprising Horde hunter in the beta. (Sorry, PTR testers, but you can’t help with this one.) I’d like you to try taming Snorts, the slumbering boar of Frosthold in the Storm Peaks.

Snorts is the pet of Boarmaster Bragh, the Stable Master in Frosthold. Both Bragh and Snorts are aligned with the Explorers’ League in Northrend. As an Alliance who has just entered the Storm Peaks, Snorts is neutral to me. However, when I attempt to tame him I get the dreaded ‘Invalid target’ message.

Now it may be that, being the pet of an NPC, Snorts can’t be tamed by anyone. But I’d really like to know for certain. So I’d like to see if a Horde character can manage it, or if not what kind of error messages they get. Any takers?

Update: As I mentioned above, Niio has tamed this wily boar! As he says in the comments below:

If you stand on the rock above him, you can tame through the line of sight issue, and the elite dwarf guards and npcs reach you about halfway through the tame. Very difficult indeed.

  1. Mania – have you tried setting yourself at war with the faction? I’m not sure if he’s faction aligned, but that might be a way around the issue for alliance?

Just a thought – I got chain disconnected due to some server issue or other and gave up. >.<

  2. @Niio-What addons do you use to get your UI to look like that?

That’s pretty neat the boar belonging to a rival faction can be tamed. Makes up for the fact that allis can tame the dragonhawks that are by the flight master in Traquillien. (to my latest knowledge anyways)

  3. There’s dragonhawks in Tranquilien other than the flightpath ones? I’ve never seen the flightpath ones tameable before. Can you get a screenshot of this?

  4. Niio: Excellent work!

Daikyu: Good idea, but unfortunately the At War option is grayed out. (Presumably the Explorers League is a fundamental Alliance faction and I’m not allowed to reject them.)

  5. *Chuckles* Yet another Alliance pet that can only be tamed by the horde. That…..gets a bit old. Still and all, good job Niio.

  6. Palladiamors: I’ll trade you taming this non-unique boar for the chance to get a Winterspring Frostsaber mount any day. :>

(By the way, I forgot that the pre-mades were on a PvP server and I copied the dwarf hunter first. Then I couldn’t make any Horde pre-mades there, of course. That’s how I ended up with only an Alliance hunter at level 80.)

  7. Kind of off-topic, but I saw something interesting posted by Ghostcrawler today in response to the request for volume control on pet sounds:

    http://blue.mmo-champion.com/1/10535469189-by-chance-can-we-have-pet-volume-adjustments.html

We try not to put in too many player options lest we baloon those pages even further, but this may just be the kind of thing that calls for an option. Even before the newer pets, it could be annoying at times. I once trained Dreadmire, the albino crocolisk, but had to let him go after a few weeks of heavy breathing. Most of the flappers get old too. Some of the warlock pet VO is cute the first few times, but then everyone but the warlock wants to disable it. Or maybe the warlock especially wants to disable it. :)

This would be an option for you to hear pets, not something where the pet owner would have to volunteer to mute Stompy.

    We’re discussing it.

  8. *LAUGHS* Point, point. Still and all, it is rather annoying that the horde have access to several alliance mounts without instance farming, and alliance has access to….two? Three with the brewfest kodo, and all of thee above require drops from bosses. Super rare drops. Not to mention they can sneak in to tame several alliance town pets, one of which has the adorable barking thing going for it. Thats really just a minor whine on my part, but I felt like getting it out! *Laughs*

  9. I’d noticed that almost all the stablemasters have pets with them now in Northrend. I’m tempted to strip naked and run Ansawa into the Warsong camp in BT to see if there’s anything tameable in there…

  10. Mania-

The Explorer’s League is alligned, basically, with the Ironforge Dwarfs, so it will not be accessable to the Alliance. However, with everything that is being set up now, it will just be easier to take your high level in and grab one from Razorfen and then level them up for five lesvels.

  11. Yes, Alliance can currently tame Silvermoon Dragonhawks…. which would only make it fair that we can tame this pretty piggy. So if they keep Snorts tameable by Horde, we’d have to get used to Night elves and Dwarves running around Silvermoon. O_o
Grats to the zealous hunters who tamed him! And I know this isn’t a Name That Pet post, but I suggest, Niio, that you name him Piggles!! (or ChuckBoaris, lol)
    I love this site! ^__^

  12. I’ve checked all the other alliance towns in northrend, and unless I missed something, Snorts is the only horde pet.

As far as I have seen/read, it goes:

    Horde:
    Spot (Wolf)
    Snorts (Boar)

    Alliance:
    Silvermoon Dragonhawk (Dragonhawk)
    Shardtooth (Bear)

  13. I don’t actually count the dragon hawk, thats more of a strange inclusion then anything else. Makes me wonder if the bats might have some way of being tameable too….. anyway, I could have sworn there was at least one more….. oh well.

  14. Lol at the whining. Btw, that wolf at the entrance to Blade’s Edge Mountains is only tamable by the alliance. Rema, I think her name is.

  15. what alliance mounts can horde get?
    brewfest kodo = ram
    zg raptor = tiger
    barron mount = nothing
+alliance gets a cool witersaber mount

  16. did they make detrafila (the wolf pet of the dude near the wyvern dealer in shadowmoon) untameable? i could have sworn that allis could get them to…

  17. The Horde took Alliance paladin mounts too, a lot of people forget about that :P

Good to see there’s another piggy in the game, hopefully they’ll put in some more for Alliance to tame.

  18. congratulations Niio! this is a nice skin, I like it a lot but I was stupid as I was leveling and decided that I wouldn’t keep any of my pets for more than ten levels. The new auto-ding to (your level)-5 will make that a bit less painful… I wish they would auto ding to (your level) though haha.

  19. i was saying as far as mounts the other faction cant get so pally is = now i guess u could say horde get horses because of lock/pally but hippogryph isnt really like we get something over allies, not like we get bats or anything

so as far as ground mounts horde can get tigers and rams (class horse too) and allies get deathcharger, kodo, and raptor but none are easy to get, unless u count last years brewfest (still was kinda hard)

  20. Speaking of mounts I find it very unfair on the horde side… Very unfair. For example, we have ‘three’ of your mounts if you do NOT include the warhorse pally mount because it’s a CLASS mount, just like warlocks and has completely different colours. Anyway, I’ll only conclude the tiger, ram and hippogryph! Now for the alliance, they can have our raptor, undead horse, kodo, hawkstrider and their own damn ‘alliance only’ mount. Clearly give us their elekks or even a horde only mount because it’s getting out of hand.

  21. to bring this back on topic (and because I didn’t see anyone mention it), the level 80 taxi mounts in Crystalsong forest (at the blood elf quest hub) are tamable by horde (from last push at least), my premade troll was able to just go “at war” stand right next to one and tame it. Didn’t aggro a guard or the FP master while I stole his mounts ;)
