Name That Pet: Raelian’s Raptor

Name That Pet: Raelian & RaptorFinal Name: Sage

Today on Name That Pet we have a young blood elf named Raelian who has recently tamed a raptor (and who tells a very good story).

Raelian writes:

Maybe your forum of dedicated readers can help me out with naming my raptor. I play on Steamwheedle Cartel as a Hordie. When I’m not chewing glass on M’uru with my guildmates, I’m often leveling alts and rping.

I also managed to suck my brother into playing the game with me, and we’re trying the Recruit-a-Friend out. Leveling is so insane! Your pet will literally ding off of a handful of mob kills a few minutes after your own toon has gained a new level. Pet loyalty comes rather fast too it seems like. The one downside is that you can really one have one pet to level with. It’s difficult to try and keep two, due to how fast you level. Shuffling pets from the stable is really hard to maintain because of the triple experience. =/

Anyway. About the raptor. ><

--------------------

The new alt I've been leveling with my brother is a blood elf hunter by the name of Raelian. Raelian Sunstriker is a very quiet youth, who spends as much time as he can away from Silvermoon City and his once beloved Eversong Woods. Rae's homeland hold too many painful memories for him, and too many nights that were plagued with constant nitemares and other horrid visions. Over time and with exposure to the Horde, Rae has gained a friendship with an orc by the name of Xeera Stormhowl. Despite all the constant grief she gives him, Xee silently worries about Rae's withdrawn nature. She takes every opportunity that she can to try and pull Rae from his shell, telling him to stop being such a "Skittish Pinkie".

Being a hunter, Rae wanted a companion. Xeera had already settled upon a serpent that she befriended the last time they had jumped headlong into Wailing Caverns. Rae hadn't been as fortunate, and Xeera was getting really irritated by how quiet and indecisive he was being over it. She'd suggested many different wolves and big cats to him, and Rae just didn't seem interested. The result led to a one-sided arguement (meaning that Xee did all the arguing and Rae just quietly stood there and took the brunt of it). Rae's continued silence didn't help Xee's temper or her concerns, and in frustration, she stormed off to cool down. Rae was left to himself, and he decided to explore the Barrens. Xee would track him down when she wanted to. He knew that.

Rae had dealt with a fair deal of Quilboar, knowing their usual haunts by the thorny vines erupting in scattered places across the Barrens. Normally Rae would have steered clear of such beasts. Quilboar had been quite dangerous to deal with when he and Xee had first come to the Barrens. Despite having gained more experience since then, Rae was alone. A group of Quilboar could prove to be a lot of trouble. But something had caught his attention. A sound. Rather, it was shrieking. Said shrieking was also underlined with the rumbling grunts and squeals of Quilboar. Despite the possible danger, Rae knew he had to investigate.

The scene he came upon was a chaotic one. A group of Quiboar had created quite the cloud of dust in their anger, which was focused upon a raptor they had cornered against a thorny vine protecting their dwellings. Rae couldn't get a very good look at the raptor at first, due to the dust and the constant movement of the Quiboar. All he could see was the raptor's outline, as it continued to shriek and lash at the Quilboars who intended to kill it. It had probably been trying to steal any shiny object it could find from the Quilboar dwellings to further adorn its nest, and the Quilboar were going to have none of it.

Not wanting to see the raptor be killed, Rae planted an arrow into the back of one of the Quilboars. The beast fell forward with a squeal of surprise and pain, causing its comrades to turn their attention from the raptor and onto Rae. They seemed as surprised as Rae was. Where in fel did the elf come from?

Rae was asking himself "Why did you do something SO STUPID?!", when he realized just how many Quilboar were present. The dust had concealed others of the group, and Rae had come to the horrific realization that he was very outnumbered. However, he did see the raptor take the opportunity to make its escape. As it ran from the haze of dust, Rae saw it was coal gray in color, with paler markings and golden eyes. Rae took a breath to marvel, before he had to defend himself as the Quilboar charged in on him.

Rae ended up in the same position that the raptor had been- pinned against the thorns with a circle of angry Quilboar around him. In a last ditch effort, Rae turned and moved to climb up the vine, hoping to save himself from being gored to death. He got about halfway up, before a shooting pain lanced through his left leg. The Quilboar had lunged for him in his attempt to escape, and one had actually bitten down upon his leg to grab him. Other moved to grasp onto Rae's other leg, and they yanked him right back down, through the thorns and all. They started beating on him as soon as he hit the ground, and under the blows Rae felt darkness closing in on him. He didn't want to die this way! Xee would never forgive him, and he knew she would blame herself for leaving him alone.

Through the pain and his foggy mind, he heard that familiar shriek again, and the surprised squeals of the Quilboar. Their beating upon him ceased, right before Rae finally passed out.

When he woke up, he found himself propped up against a sage tree. There were no Quilboars, no vines, no dust. Just warm sun and the open grass of the Barrens. And fel, did he hurt. With a wince, he tilted his head to take a glance at himself, knowing some pretty nasty wounds and a badly injured leg would greet his eyes. He expected Xee to be there too, applying bandages and ready to chew him for being so stupid. But it wasn't Xee, at all. Rather, it was the raptor from earlier.. crouched at his feet. Rae took a slow breath, bracing himself against the tree. He wasn't sure what to expect.. and if Xee wasn't here, how did he get out of there and away from the Quilboars to begin with? Did the raptor.. ?

The raptor blinked at him, regarding him rather quietly for a moment. Raptors were incredibly intelligent creatures, and this one understood that Rae had saved her. It's why she had gone back for him, managing to shake the Quilboars off of him. Gathering Rae up had been far more complicated, trying to balance him and avoid angry tusks all at once. She had managed to succeed however, using a few hefty headbutts and claws to make a path of escape.

She'd carried Rae a fair way, until she found a suitable spot in the shade of the sage tree. With him now awake, she could smell his fear just as readily as she could smell his blood. She drew a slow breath, before slowly tilting her head down to look at his wounded leg. The Quilboar that had taken a bite out of him, had also managed to twist the leg in the process of ripping Rae down from the vines. The bones hadn't been able to stand the strain, and had snapped under the assault. It was a very nasty injury, and she decided to treat it like she treated any of her own injuries. She began to lick it, minding his torn skin as she began to clean away the grit and dirty, drying blood.

Rae startled at this, expecting the raptor to take a bite out of him. He winced, watching her, understanding that she was actually trying to tend his injury for him, rather than devour him. It felt rather strange, and hurt to a fair extent.. but he didn't stop her. Rather, he finally relaxed, resting against the tree. There wasn't much he could do at the moment, anyway. He couldn't walk like this, and his new companion probably wouldn't allow him to anyway. Xeera would be on her way. He was sure of that. He was also fairly sure he was safe in his present company.

---------------------

Sorry for such a long post. I'm not sure this is something you want to cram onto your forum, due to how long it is. I've just desperately been trying to find a name for this raptor. She's very special to Rae since she saved his life, and they've been companions to each other ever since that day. But she still has no name. Rae gets enough grief from Xeera that he's never given her a name, and I've been lousy at trying to find one. I want a serious name that fits her, and something that describes her protective nature over Rae. I just fail at naming raptors. Someone help! *flails*

After a great story like that, we will most certainly do all we can to help find a name!

Wonderful story and great screenshot! You’re a better role-player than I am! You scored so many brownie points it’s not even funny.
Here are the names, based on context of the story, that I suggest:

Sage – after the sage tree Rae awoke under
Quilfeather – after the Quilboars, and raptors have feathers
    Plainsrunner – after the Barrens
Bramble – after the Quilboars home
    Bramblerose – it’s just pretty :)
Mae – would look good above your name
    Azure – color of raptor
Gloria – the whole “savior” thing
Sungrass – it’s the name of an in-game herb. I just like that name :P

And some names with no particular meaning that I just like:
    Amorni
    Zephyr
    Jupiter
    Seafeather
    Hibiscus
    Paradise
    Venus
    and May

Those are all very girly names, but I tried. You have a gorgeous pet and I hope you find the perfect name!

I’m assuming you want a more serious name.

    Ishwyil – Thalassian for “gentle”
    Nuilase – Thalassian for “claw”
    Daribase – Thalassian for “grey”

I could go on, but I’m sure if this is something you are interested in, the actual reference link might be of more use to you. :) http://thalassian.pbwiki.com/FrontPage

First of all.. I sick at names.

I’d say give her a nice name like Athena, companion of heroes and the goddess of heroic endeavour.

  5. Seveil - September 29th, 2008 @ 11:43 pm UTC

“Garnet” springs to mind, looking at the pink markings on her flanks.
“Kit”: not sure why, it just seems to fit.

Great story by the way, definitely one of the best pet stories I’ve seen :)

I personally really liked what Tashi suggested “Sage – after the sage tree Rae awoke under” for a name.
As for my suggestion I would say name her Clara after Clara Barton the nurse who helped the wounded soldiers in the civil war. Since you story involved you passing out and waking up to a gentle raptor trying to heal your wounds. Plus I imagine many civil war soldiers passing out in battle and waking up to Clara Barton tending to their wounds, similar to the circumstances in your story :)

something to do with raven, crow,or magpie feathers? they collect shiny things sometimes.becareful if you name them after an ingame herb/mining node you gather.it can get mildly distracting seeing that on the screen all the time right under you…

  9. Axeface - September 30th, 2008 @ 12:11 am UTC

If I was your Dungeon Master I’d give you a billion bonus xp.

    Dusk
Spike (it was a very pointy story)
Dyna (deinonychus is a species of raptor)

    I like a lot of Tashi’s names.

  10. Mordain - September 30th, 2008 @ 12:24 am UTC

I used to have a gray raptor that I named Cesare. Sadly that character doesn’t exist anymore, but I thought you might like the name. It also sounds a masculine…

I’m horrible at names, I had a wolf for 25 levels and never named him. >.<

  11. Ansawa - September 30th, 2008 @ 12:35 am UTC

I was very taken with your story, Rae, so I spent some time wandering around THE INTERNETS hunting for “guardian” names.

Of those, my particular favorites are Ismat, Alexa, Lexine, Alondra, Camarin, and Anselma–all of which mean some variation on “protector or defender”.

Alternately, Akhana, meaning “love,” since I needed to sneak in my adoration of Gnostic names. ;)

  12. Cotytto - September 30th, 2008 @ 12:52 am UTC

    Beskytter

    Norwegian for guardian.

  13. e-syringe - September 30th, 2008 @ 2:05 am UTC

Saskia supposedly means “Protector of Mankind.” :3

Also, WOOT Steamwheedle Cartel! I’m an ally though, not because I don’t like Horde but because things just…ended up that way :( Any alts? :P

  14. Kady - September 30th, 2008 @ 3:18 am UTC

Just a little brainstorming from me (:
    Thundercry
    Thundersong
    (I’m a sucker for nature-names, I’ll give it a rest now^^)
    Might
    Sethia
    Alessa
    Bochurra
    Iticha
    Beroca

I actually started out with Alessa in mind for my pet, seeing how she is Sharons darker side in the Silent Hill movie! I felt that i could relate to that, in some strange way…
But I ended up with Alyssia!
Let the names linger for some time, maybe they can be helpful in guiding your own mind on to a good name for your friend:)

Best of luck to you on your quest
May you find what you have been searching for

    Kady & Alyssia

I name my raptors after small birds
Wren, Sparrow, Jay, Shrike, Ibis, Rail, Plover, Kite
cause if you really look at a raptor then you look at a bird
    they are so similar

  21. Sigrdrífa - September 30th, 2008 @ 2:37 pm UTC

nice story! I was on an RP server, but gave it up – just couldnt role play (do it enough in real life, I guess)and all of my names are of Nordic Sagas :) (clever little devil, I know). I did try to find blood elf names for healer, lover, friend, etc, but I guess no one has taken the time to figure those out :( .

Tashi has a lot of nice sounding names. Take Tashi’s suggestion of “Sage”, thats the winner. Maybe “Sagefeather”, or “Sageflower”, etc. Anyway, good luck, good hunting and good story telling.

I love Takk, I have him on 3 of my 5 hunters. No good names though. I have Takk, MiniTakk, and Varanus (which is the genius name for the Komodo Dragon).

  23. Mania - September 30th, 2008 @ 7:55 pm UTC

Aside: I often use Varana as a feminized variant of Varanus (and because in some places Varanus sets off language filters). I have a thing for monitors of all stripes. :>

  24. Vajarra - September 30th, 2008 @ 8:16 pm UTC

I have that same raptor on one of my hunters, her name is “Rajani” meaning “dark”.

  25. Shanrei - October 1st, 2008 @ 4:14 am UTC

    good story!
when it comes to naming, I, too, suck a great deal. Anyways, let’s see what we can dig up from my dusty brain.

Dustbunny – because raptors are cute, and you found her in the Barrens
Raahjaa – has no meaning, just sounds kinda awesome to me
Tyri – after Tyrygosza, or whatever, the blue dragon who’s suppossed to be Kalecgos’ mate
Skyggen – means The Shadow in danish

its early, couldn’t come up with more.. hope you find a good name for such an awesome companion!

  32. Urthona - October 7th, 2008 @ 4:07 pm UTC

Hm. Raelian Sunstriker is a strong name and well suited for a Blood Elf. The way you write leads me to believe you play your character as very respectful and adventurous. I’d examine the Thalassian translators to come up with a name that means something in Elven, like Rashiban suggests. Another option would be to use the Taurahe translation, as a Barrens raptor inhabits the land where the Tauren were once nomadic.

Lots of imagery is suggested by the combination of a Blood Elf and a Raptor. Blood Elves have several avian symbols, and the Raptor is closely related to Birds of Prey. Blood Elves can be seen as having lost their wings; Raptors can be seen as never needing them. There’s a blending of traditions in the fact that a Thalassian chooses a beast from ancestral Tauren hunting grounds. That you chose the word “coal gray” to describe its color when we all are aware that Blood Elves are synonymous with fire, sun, and light as opposed to the Night Elves, and that dinosaurs are the source for our fossil fuels of today.

I suggest the name Coal. It’s something you instinctively chose, it’s short, descriptive, cleverly respective of both members of the partnership, and something that if you look at enough, loses its connotations.

  33. Krom - October 8th, 2008 @ 6:22 pm UTC

    I named mine: Sauron
