Name That Pet: Atayah’s Lion

Name That Pet: Atayah & Black LionFinal Name: Deimos

Humar sure is one popular cat! Today we have a Name That Pet request from a Draenei hunter who has just tamed Humar (again!). Atayah writes:

Atayah was my huntress in Furcadia. I used her personality to make my Horde huntress Nightwill, and now I’ve made her again as a Draenei. I had to go for Humar again ’cause I just love his look but I found myself wanting a new name.

My Tauren huntress was greatly into PVP and I ended up naming him Foehammer (me anvil, him hammer). As a beastmaster it’s very important to me to get a name that really fits the pet and I’m at a loss!

A fierce huntress with a passion for the hunt learned from the orcs on Durotar, Atayah found herself face to face with a lion in the Barrens. The fight was a long and bloody one and in the end the hunters on two and four legs recognized the bond between them and formed a partnership.

A few quotes from the roleplayinghelper mod.

  • “I am not a monster, I am a predator. You are simply my prey.”
  • “You have killed without mercy, expect none in return.”
  • “Dare to commit a rash act and surrender yourself to my beast.”
  • “There is no animal more invincible than a woman, nor fire so hot, nor any wildcat so ruthless.”
  • “I hunt because hunting is my passion.”
  • “I kill because it is my nature to kill.”

Thanks so much!

Our pleasure! Let’s see what great suggestions we can come up with for this lion.

(And completely off-topic, I once met the creator of Furcadia at a conference. He made me a little origami dragon. I still have it … somewhere in one of these boxes …)

Seeing as your character’s passion to fight in this merciless world is so strong and willing to be recognized, why not name your fierce lion “BlackDeath”? It’s simple, to the point, and will be the last thing your foes see before they die.

    Therona, Shadelass, Onyxia, and Shellia.

how about Deathclaw or Blackguard…or even Dark plague.

  4. Harleigh - September 24th, 2008 @ 1:22 pm UTC

    Ares.

  5. Harleigh - September 24th, 2008 @ 1:23 pm UTC

See what I did there? Simple .. to the point. Ares is a powerful name. God of War.. etc.. totally perfect for a black lion.

    Apollo is good to.

hmm.. what about Yumiga (Darkness fang in japanese)
i think it fits him good as he got fangs and he is black as the night ^^

It’s always so hard to come up with something for Humar, he deserves something perfect…

    Obsidian
    Monarch
Cloud (or a variation like Stormcloud, Thundercloud, etc.)
    Fear, Pain or Sorrow
    Tsavo (after the Tsavo maneaters)

    That’s all I got for now…

    name that pet theWhitestDog

  10. Melora - September 24th, 2008 @ 2:00 pm UTC

First: I tamed Humar on Ravencrest and named him Otieno. It’s African and it means “born at night.” Some other suggestions:
    Chernobog (Slavic “Dark god”)
    Deimos (Greek, “Terror”)
    Abaddon (Hebrew “Destruction”)

Second: Sundiata, this post is about naming a pet, not making assumptions about the OP. Also, if you actually read what was above the quotes, you’d see that they are
“A few quotes from the roleplayinghelper mod.” From a mod likely means “not from her” Frankly, it’s her business how she lives her life or what her opinions are, but you’re being counterproductive.

A draenei who hangs out with orcs? O_o

  15. Tashi - September 24th, 2008 @ 4:30 pm UTC

My friend has Humar! She named him Bearcat, after my cat irl. Onyx is a good name, because I think it represents strength and solidity. And Humar is a VERY strong cat.
I also like Ujarak’s suggestion of Tsavo. Actually, I LOVE that suggestion. Not only is it the name of a vicious big cat species, it would also look great with Atayah’s name. Example:
    Tsavo
    Atayah’s Pet
    See? I love that!
So my vote is Tsavo! Good luck naming! ^_^

Im sorry to use this post like this but first off mania i’ve got a question, now i dont know if its just my computer or what, but right now i shows me as not having a picture by my name…. now i dont nkow if its like that for you all but i kind of need to go back to that website and check what happened to my picture so if i can get it from you mania that’d be great.

Also i have some names- Eocene (means dawn in greek), Misandry (means hatered in greek sounds dark like).

I second Obsidion and raise you an Oblivion.

  19. Truffled - September 24th, 2008 @ 6:24 pm UTC

    Grograman

    - named for Grograman the Many Colored Death from the book The Neverending Story. Since as a black lion he is all colors in one.

  20. Xemik - September 24th, 2008 @ 7:04 pm UTC

I like Grograman! I remember reading that name as a child. Very depressive how things with Grograman ended, but amazing name!
I also like Tsavo. It lends itself to images of carnage, bloodshed, and death on a massive, yet personalized, scale.

  21. Kamalia - September 24th, 2008 @ 7:11 pm UTC

Here’s some names I thought of:

    Tyrone – Greek for “King”
Yokai – Japanese for “Demon”, “Spirit”, or “Monster”
    Gazini – “Blood” in Zulu
Ankou – The faerie/French version of the Grim Reaper
Tuoni – The Finnish god of the Underworld
Arawn – Celtic god of the underworld

I also second Deidare’s names. I might have to go and get a pet just to name it ‘Eocene’ I like that name so much, LoL. Good luck! ^_^

  22. Zulimunda - September 24th, 2008 @ 7:14 pm UTC

    Krishnax

  23. Agravaine - September 24th, 2008 @ 7:20 pm UTC

  24. Agravaine - September 24th, 2008 @ 7:21 pm UTC

    Sundiata; rude much?

  26. Lucutu - September 24th, 2008 @ 8:18 pm UTC

Seconding Onixia or Obsidian also adding BadLuck (Black cat) and possibly Yahtaa (Your name mixed up)

    Good Hunting

  27. Lamis - September 24th, 2008 @ 9:03 pm UTC

Hmm, I can only think of one for him. It’s a name I created a while back, how does Tathar sound?

  28. Loved - September 24th, 2008 @ 10:43 pm UTC

    Oh wait black cat… Jinx!

I always name my pets things like Bonesnapper, Mangler, Urnitemare, Mauler etc

    My Humar is named Shade

  29. Pepp - September 25th, 2008 @ 1:00 am UTC

I think the best name form all these suggestions 9some are very good) is TSAVO. Short, phonetically sound and historically strong.

Excellent suggestion! Personnaly, I have Sian Rotam, it’s opposite color… and named him Fidelio

  30. Arinth - September 25th, 2008 @ 1:17 am UTC

Hayata. But if you dont like that, I vote obsidian.

  31. Kanaan - September 25th, 2008 @ 3:19 am UTC

I have to second Ares. The fierce companion of a fierce huntress needs a name that is strong and commanding! =)

  32. Kalalay - September 25th, 2008 @ 3:46 am UTC

Nigernex – Latin for Black Death

  33. Mogo - September 25th, 2008 @ 4:42 am UTC

    Ender

  34. Crannberry - September 25th, 2008 @ 10:39 am UTC

I named my Humar, Dis, god of the underworld (Or the underworld itself). The name seems to match you and your Humar as well. =]

  35. mrchicken - September 25th, 2008 @ 10:45 am UTC

“Shabekavir”: means desert night in iranian apparently. Maybe a bit long tho.

  36. Atayah - September 25th, 2008 @ 12:01 pm UTC

Hi guys! Thank you so much for your suggestions, it was hard going through them to pick only one.

As much as I like greek mythology (The original Atayah was modeled after an Amazon of their myths) I try to avoid that in WoW (There may not be much RP on my RP server but I do try). Tsavo would be a nice in to the story of the man eaters, which not too many people know about, but its not quite what I had in mind.

Deimos ended up being my name of choice because when I imagine it as a name its a word that speaks of power.

Again thanks so much for your suggestions, I only wish I had enough pets to use them all, and thanks to Mania for posting this!

  37. Kalli - September 25th, 2008 @ 6:07 pm UTC

Guess that name’s double-win for ya, since it IS a name from Greek mythology. ;) He’s one of the sons of Ares and Aphrodite (which is why one of Mars’s moons is named Deimos).

He’s more obscure, though, so you should be okay on the RP front. :)

  38. Shagrat-Turalyon - September 26th, 2008 @ 10:09 am UTC

I just tamed Humar myself last night and I’m going to borrow Tsavo for his name.

  39. Bunkey The Monkey - September 26th, 2008 @ 11:09 am UTC

On one of my hunters, I have both Echeyakee (white lion) and Humar (black lion), and I named them ‘ghost’ and ‘darkness’ from the movie “The Ghost and The Darkness” about maneating lions in Africa. Seemed fitting.

    * “I am not a monster, I am a predator. You are simply my prey.”
    * “You have killed without mercy, expect none in return.”
    * “Dare to commit a rash act and surrender yourself to my beast.”
    * “There is no animal more invincible than a woman, nor fire so hot, nor any wildcat so ruthless.”
    * “I hunt because hunting is my passion.”
    * “I kill because it is my nature to kill.”
    Roflmao?

  41. Farseer Lolotea - September 29th, 2008 @ 5:41 pm UTC

Deimos?  I think that means “terror.”  Appropriate.

  42. Kaynein - November 25th, 2008 @ 9:59 pm UTC

Aha The Ghost and The Darkness! I am so happy to see I am not the only one to have seen that movie. As for a name for your striking cat, if I had tamed him, I would go with Chernobog (Slavic “Dark god”). Sounds awesome. I own a frostsaber myself, named Tjilpa.

    Happy trails.
