First Spirit Beast Found

WotLK Beta: Evara with Spirit BeastEvara has found the first confirmed example of the new exotic Spirit beast family!

The beast is Loque’nahak, a rare level 76 that Evara found in Sholazar Basin, southwest of Nessingwary Base Camp. The model matches the new cat-like model we’ve heard described: a snow leopard-like cat with glowing blue eyes. Beast Lore on the untamed beast describes it as an Exotic pet. And when tamed, the beast’s name becomes “Spirit Beast”.

WotLK Beta: Evara with Spirit BeastThis raises as many interesting questions as it answers! Is this the only spirit beast, the only one we’ve found so far, or the only one that’s been added to the world yet? Will they all be rare? Will they all use this cat-like model?

And you know, this is the first silver-dragon rare of any kind that I have heard about in Northrend. Have all the rares been added with this build? Can any of them can be tamed? What kind of respawn time does Loque’nahak have, and how is his loot? (As if any hunter would kill him rather than tame him at this point!)

(By the way, I am safely back at home and trying desperately to catch up with all the news. Please keep the posts and comments and e-mails coming — I’m compiling the info you are all contributing as I make my way through it!)

[edit: By the way, I wanted to give a big thank you to Skosiris from Wowhead for letting me know about the new Spirit Beast exotic family almost before I even knew there was new build happening.]

I’ve already tamed a Shimmerwing Moth on the PTR, and I’m loving it – Serenity Dust is a badass ability, and I haven’t had this much fun with my hunter since I first hit 70. I still love my Rak’shiri, but considering I specced my hunter Beast Mastery with the exotic taming talent, then ended up with a moth… hehe, Wrath, I think, is going to be interesting, to say the least. :P

I wonder why Blizzard isn’t reusing/refining/expanding on more of the cool old world skins. The Outland wind serpents look terrible compared to the old ones. I mean, really, since when was it bad to have a recognizable face? >_<

  3. Ansawa

Dweezill, I love dragonhawks too. Which is why I’m really disappointed the family hasn’t gotten more tameable skins despite them being present in-game–but c’est la vie, I suppose. :)

@Ryai: I’ve only run into three akitas in my life—including the kitten-killer—that weren’t perfectly nice dogs.  But you’re right in saying that all of their problems could probably be attributed to poor socialization and training.  (Of the other two, one—also belonging to my parents—was nearly catatonic.  The other was psychotically paranoid and constantly barking.  Both of my parents’ dogs were acquired from a failed kennel, which could explain a lot.)

@Casdia:  Yes, I’ve run into a few bad dogs (the kitten-killer, the kitten-killer-wannabe that lives next door, and a horrible Yorkie that had a grudge against me).  But I’ve also run into quite a few good dogs.  Case in point:  My rottweiler cross—who only received basic obedience training, but could probably have passed utility-dog tests—died ten years ago.  I still miss her.

@Kalli:  Hey!  I like the Outland wind serpents!  (Outland chimeras, on the other hand?  Only one worth it is Nuramoc; his pretty color makes up for his two ugly faces.  And don’t get me started on ravagers.)

  5. Lamis

    @Farseer Lolotea

I can totally agree with you about Nuramoc! They have freakin ugly/scary heads but I love the purple hues and wings, I also sort of like their tails compared to the old half hairy rat-tailed chimeras xD Don’t get me wrong though, the old ones rock!

I have a green ravager I’ve had since lvl 16 and I’m a 70. He’s still my main. of the other 2 pets I have now, I’ll be dropping both for new ones when LK comes out. My Ghost saber will become a Spirit beast cat, picking up a wasp, a green core hound, and something else… hard to call right now but I’ll need a tanking pet of some sort.

Thing is different people like different things. I hated ravagers when I was playing my BE hunter but when I made my main, my orc hunter he’s had one from almost the start.

I personally hate flappy pets, (( The wasp might end up being let go, he’s a Buzzy not a flappy)) but some people sware by their owls and dragonhawks. They’re just not for me.

So Blizzard has to cater to the majority, not the minority’s…

  7. Seidouyumi

    Pepsijedi-

I would say that they’re catering to the minority rather than the majority. If they catered to the majority then we would see Cats, Ravagers and Raptors and no variety. Instead, they’re catering to the minority of people who love, say, Tallstriders or Crocilisks instead.

  8. PepsiJedi

I think you’re missing my point. You’re not seeing any new tallstrider’s or crocs or the like, while cats and what not are getting new stuff, or the most stuff. Granted no ravagers ((outlands critter)) or Raptors (( Cold blooded critters)). My point is if 10 of 1000 people use a spore bat, they’re not going to cater the game to those 10.

  9. Wolfington

    Hrm.
    I really don’t think the ghosty beasts will be put into the Spirit Beast family, simply because;
    1. The family eats Fish and Meat, or Cat Food.
    2. No families so far have gotten more than one, erh, species of beast in them. Different skins? Sure! Different animals altogether? Might cause some problems.
    3. The only spirit beast right now ISN’T a ghost. It’s pretty solid looking. If there WAS to be more species in it, they probubly wouldn’t be ghosts, just solid creatures with glowing eyes and mouths.

    But I hope I’m wrong.

  10. Seidouyumi

    Pepsijedi-

Except for one new cat skin applied to an existing model and one new bear skin/model, most existing pet families aren’t getting new skins or models. That is except for two- Wolves, Birds of Prey and Carrion Birds, all of which are far less common than Ravagers, Raptors or Cats. Birds of Prey are getting three new models and five new skins while Carrion Birds are getting one new model and two new skins. Wolves are getting two new models as of now, and five new skins. Wolves are among the least common pets out there.

So, I’m not sure what your point is given that all families are getting family skills and a lot of them are being reclasified. I’m sorry if I’m being dense, but I’m not feeling well, so I really am not sure what you are trying to get at.

  11. Veyska

The sole current spirit beast isn’t a ghost, but I’d bet it’s not a normal cat given who it’s the mate *of*. That’s got to be something.

  12. Curumor

    @Sukulatae:
I am indeed. Been a fan for about 14 years, to be exact. :P
Got Humar too, but named him Veldrin (drow for “shadow”I’m also a big, big geek. :D).
But you should have named him Sholo/Shulo, after the black lion that belonged to the first Amra (and later followed Conan and helped him and Belit defeat Ajaga, sacrificing himself to save Conan).
Interestingly enough (if you’re a geek) Bêlit is derived from Akkadian (Bêltu, meaning lady/mistress) which is one of the old Semitic languages, which has the biblical name Shem, which is Belits homeland, making her an arabian princess. ^^

My god, I need to get out more….

  13. Deathbang

I was actually not referring to cats. I was referring to the spirit beasts on which this article is about. They also have prowl and their spirit strike ability in total does less damage than monstrous bite. The perpetual damage boost of devilsaurs should keep them doing more sustained DPS than a spirit beast. I don’t know about everyone here but my Hunter is sustained DPS based so I’m going with a devilsaur. (Plus they are really cool!)

  14. Kalli

    @Lolotea

Fair enough! xD My apologies; I just never got attached to my (OL) wind serpent and may try again with a cuter one (well, cuter to me) in LK. :)

  15. Meleris

Gorillas. I think we need to take a look at Gorillas now that the cooldown for thunderstomp has been changed to 10sec. I have been playing with one i picked up recently on the test realm, and it is AMAZING.

  16. Seidouyumi

They dropped the cool down on Thunderstomp to ten seconds?! Woohoo! Now I’m really going to have to have a ton more hunters. . .sigh.

  17. Kristy

Yeah, I’ve stated that before, about how Spirit Beast are not so-called “ghostly”.. :-P. I have no idea what other Spirit Beasts they’re gonna release. And hmmmm, too bad the Exotic Devilsaur and Spirit Beast “don’t” do the same DpS. Guess my Devilsaur’s gonna stay out the most. Was kinda looking forward to going, maybe, back to a cat(-like :-P.) pet.

  18. Curumor

@Meleris: Aye, been considering Gorillas since I heard that. I should think it would make a very good pet for tanking multiple mobs. You done any testing (or just plain noticed) if it works better than Screech (and the various new types of that skill)?

@Kristy: Would kinda like to have a cat as a raid pet too. I think Devilsaur will be abit annoying when it comes to raids (especially if they don’t do something about the groundshaking). But they seem to be the best dps pets, and I’m a dps’er so… :P

  19. Rikaku

Devilsaurs wont be the best for long. They’re getting smacked with the nerf bat. Which is kind of sad. I wish all exotic pets had a really good skill like the Devilsaurs (and by really good I mean one that makes the 51 pt talent really feel like its a 51 pointer other than taming pretty beasts <3 ).

  20. Harleigh

I agree. 51 point pets should be better than the other pets. Usually when i say i’m BM people just laugh and tell me to go MM. I think we should get something special to our pets since we ARE sticking with BM. I’m not saying here give our pets the abilty to 1 shot things. Just make it a playable spec. Give us something a little more like what MM or Survival has.

  21. Wain

The only problem I can think of with making exotic pets overall more powerful than normal pets is that it would supersede 99% of BM pet options, and cripple any BM who really loves their non-exotic and wants to use it regularly. I suspect Blizzard didn’t want to end up with a situation where almost every BM hunter has one of two or three pets, much as we see with cats and ravagers currently. If that’s the case, then the greatest advantage I can think of with having the exotic pet talent would be to have a suite of pets at the BM’s disposal, each with powerful special abilities for different situations, but not especially aimed at everyday grinding. If Blizzard could balance the exotic pets well, then BMs would be in demand for raids not because of their raw damage, but because they can bring just the right pet for the right boss, and help parties where they have a shortage of classes that would otherwise fill those roles (crowd control, stun, etc.)

  22. Curumor

Ppl laugh at you being BM..? O_o
What kind of nubs do you share a realm with? :P

BM is the best raid and group specc by far, not to mention the best solo specc.
And it’s arguably a more effective than MM and surv vs certain classes in pvp.

Might change in wolk, but live nothing beats BM, tbh. ;)

  23. Curumor

@Wain: Another option would be to give all pets a second skill that’s BM talent exclusive and more powerful than the normal one.

That would be kinda nice, come to think of it… And it would certainly make the talent more desirable. Plus it would fit lore-wise. A hunter dedicated to training his pet would naturally have taught them more tricks or improved the usual ones.
Like a Double Rake for cats, for example.

  24. Kristy

Curumor: I don’t mind at all right now, that Devilsaurs are the best. I, personally, do not mind my Devilsaur’s “stomping” sound behind me. Its stomping sound doesn’t get “annoying-after-awhile” for me at all. And I kinda (unrealisticly) view it as a trade-off. Either give us pet sizes or let the ground be heard (from their stomping)! :-P.

Rikaku: How do you know this? I’ve heard this before. Does a Blizzard official say this? If yes, link please. I really want official proof of Blizzard “saying” this. :-P

  25. Palladiamors

Kristy, it was stated by GC not to long ago that Monstrous bite was getting an increased cooldown and a reduced amount of damage increase. I’d have to dig through a good number of blue posts to find it first, so I’ll just wait and see how it goes, cuz I am feeling lazy.

  26. fearstalker

My real beef is that Blizz is trying so hard to not have anything that is OP that they just nerf anything that’s good.

I’m likely going to go Surv in Wrath due to the BM dps nerfs (KC, Mortal, etc). SA is broken and not useful in instances, and overall our new stuff is pretty lackluster. The multiple nerfs to SteadyShot hurt us more than any other class. (The new Surv will be 50/50 Explosive/SteadyShot, compared to our reliance on 100% Steady shot).

A Surv hunter right now with a Gorilla will be a major force. Or a wasp in raids.

BM might still be good for leveling, but…..

For BM to be raid viable, they need to fix SA so it will be of use in raids, bump up mana regen more, and fix some of the haste issues.

BM will be a fine solo class, and perhaps the best, due to the talents to keep your pet alive, but you aren’t going to be near the top in raids anymore.

I hope that they fix the 51-point BM and SA to make BM raid viable.. I’d love to have a T-Rex in raid.

So after about 2 days of camping Loque’s 1 known spawn point and having his spawn interrupted by server crashes, I finally managed to tame him. Now, seeing as his only known spawn point was posted above, I relentlessly camped the area for hours upon in end. Today, fortunately the Northrend server actually stayed up long enough for him to be able to spawn(6-8hrs from what we gather) but for some reason I never spotted him.

What does this mean? Another spawn location!

I proceeded to check my post on the WoW Beta boards and come across some info posted by Misty saying that he can spawn by the Skyreach Pillar. I then go check Skyreach Pillar thinking to myself “Why would a rarespawn cat, hang around a bunch of wasps??”(Blizzard logic) Suffice to say, I was spamming my target macro and ended up seeing his portrait pop up on my screen. $$$$$! Spotted him sitting there…alone…no one else in sight so I nabbed him. He does a pounce attack upon aggroing(he’s neutral) but he’s trappable so you can tame him without sustaining any damage.(He actually pounced into my trap when I used tame beast on him at max range. Anyway, here’s some pics.

Also, just as a reference point to the rarespawn tamables in Sholazar, I made this magnificent creation(MS PAINT!):

I included where I saw the giant green devilsaur rarespawn King Krush pathing around at. Yes he is tamable.

Post on the blizz forums? D: Also, there was an ally hunter at the first known spot, and I went to go check the second known spot.. and when I came back there were a couple of dead mobs and he was gone… somewhat unsettling…

  30. Misty

Ty ty… I’m getting kinda pissed at ol’ Loque’nahak… I may just give up til next patch.. :( He seems to like everyone but me :(

  31. Agravaine

Heh, Misty, I whispered you that I suspected he had at least one other spawn point yesterday… but you were AFK :(

In any case, since most hunters still don’t know, I’ll continue to camp the southwest spot as a decoy if you want to switch to the pillar.

  32. BobbyDrake

    Misty,

I have spotted you there several times. I am the dwarf named Piter. Good luck getting your cat. I just want to see the damn thing in game.
