The Public Test Realms for patch 3.0 — the mega-patch that will bring the entire World of Warcraft up to speed with the mechanics of Wrath if not the new 70+ content — are now available for testing. (Well, not for beta testers. But beta testers have the beta.)
So I need your help answering this question:
What level 70-and-under pets can be tamed now that couldn’t be tamed before?
Now I’m not talking about exotics (although there are a few of those I’m not sure about yet). But a few beta builds back, Blizzard did a pass on the beasts in Northrend and allowed hunters to tame a lot of previously untameable pets from tameable families. That’s when Emerald Skytalons, Carrion Condors, and Frost Leopards became tameable, among a bunch of others.
But it looks like Blizzard may have hit a lot of the pre-Northrend beasts at the same time. For example, a hunter from Anachronos named Bloodelfer recently let me know that King Mukla can be tamed in beta. (King Mukla is the big King Kong-like ape on Jaguero Island in Stranglethorn Vale.) And both Dakender and nobbie from World of War.de e-mailed me to say that the Terokkarantula — the enormous elite spider from Terokkar Forest — can be tamed in the beta as well. Finally, I recently noticed myself that Skittering Crawlers from Azuremyst Island can be tamed in beta.
So I am very curious about what other pre-Wrath pets we may be able to tame in Patch 3.0. Petopia currently lists 136 pets level 70 and under that are part of a tameable pet family but which cannot be tamed. (And I know I haven’t got all of them!) Now some of those are NPC’s pets and some are summoned and some are bosses, but I’m willing to bet that at least a few of them will be hunter pets after Patch 3.0.
So if you have a chance on either the 3.0 Public Test Realms or the Wrath beta to chase down some of these creatures, I’d love to know what you find! (But keep in mind that, unfortunately for beasts that are NPC pets, Beast Lore sometimes isn’t accurate and you have to actually try tossing a tame at ‘em to see what happens.)
Just a thought, I wish there were Core Cats
Thanks for the ones that replied! I am on Alliance side, forgot to say this. ^^; I do have the Seal of Ascension btw. I’m almost always on my hunter Deimy if any of you want to talk to me, assuming that, like Rikaku said, the server isn’t down, which does happen way too much. XD
Ghost pets (crocolisk, hydra and ooz) still tameable?
Hi folks,
tonight I go after Kurken. wish me luck, I am horde. I also noticed those shadow snakes in Shadow Moon valley. Almost was going to try and get one. Will try that tonight too. Along with some others I have wished for….
Ok, a really off topic – how do I get to the PTR? (sorry in advance for asking)
Anyone willing and able to check and see if the Sunblade Dragonhawks from Sunwell Plateau are tameable, by chance? I’d gladly give up all three of my current pets to get one of them, it’s the only dragonhawk skin I actually like. /cry
Good luck :) Kurken is the prettiest imho, I had hoped that the hounds of culuthas in netherstorm would be tameable but they are demons, pooey, they look cool :(
BTW, @70 you can hop on the boat to azuremyst without aggro, so should be no problem :)
Does anyone have a list of giant pets? The ones that stay kinda huge after taming? Or is it generally just the exotics that stay big? I’ve tamed a few big mobs but apart from the devilsaurs and hounds they all resize to teeny proportions (Brumeran was not bad tho, would still rather he was a bit bigger). Terokkarantula looks stupid tiny after taming :(
Been on the PTR some and overall I’m very pleased with what I’m seeing.
Conserning Family skill and focus dump dps… (example: on live cats do better dps with claw (focus dump) only, no bite)
Did a few tests on my Devilsaur and he is just slightly higher dps with both the focus dump and his family skill running than he did with only one or the other. (all the others talent skills were up for the tests.)
Can’t test cats that way atm because PTR doesn’t have the rake ability yet.
The only thing I didn’t like about the Devilsaur, is that his “walk” looked very funny when he was “running”, and it seemed to mess up his follow and pursuit speed (unless he used dash, which normally “locked” the animation and he “scooted” up the mob really fast) But alot of this could be due to the excessive lag spikes on the PTR.
Well while on the way to Silithus to check out some things I went up to check out Deathclasp to see if he was still untameable. Yes, he is sadly… too bad to because I would have loved to tame the big red scorpid XD
I’m going to go to EPL to test out Duskwing if I can find him to see if he is tameable. I can’t really check out Torgos as I have already done the quest and you cannot target him while he is flying. I’m going to try and get into a group to check out some of the Instance untameables and see there. Also going to try out the Enraged Panther and some other lower elites.
Barnes: My horde character has already done that quest, or I would be willing to help test it out.
Spot in Theramore is still untameable.
Spot? Untameable? For Alliance maybe -.-;
But for Horde. Please, check your beast lore.
@Don
Will check it out anyhow.
i saw this on wowhead:http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?npc=27119
can any1 test it on beta? maybe can tame him after kill his master. it is a really nice looking cat.
Did anyone check the level 50 Frostsaber Companion’s in darnassus? i know its a long shot but, one never knows lol
@112: No. Not tameable, sorry. Though that would’ve been cool.
@113: I’ll go check XD
@113: No, they are still untameable…sadly T-T
Clefthooves – Untameable
Talbuks – Untameable
Pterodax – Untameable
Stegodon – Untameable
Hippogryphs – Haven’t checked more than likely Untameable
Gryphons – Haven check more than likely Untameable
Zhevras – Untameable
Kodo’s tameable?
New skin!
Well not so new. The Frostsaber Stalkers in winterspring no longer use the solid white cat skiun, but rather the white and black stripe skin.

Some quick comments, probably out of order:
Terrokarantula or however you spell her name has always been immune to all forms of CC. It’s not a matter of her not getting close enough to trap; I’ve tried hibernating and rooting her on a druid and they don’t stick.
We are probably not going to see a new pet family added at this stage, unless it’s in the next beta patch that’s happening right now. I’ll take a look around when I can get on, but asking “are xyz that haven’t been tameable in all the revisions so far tameable now?” when there’s no indication from data-mining (naughty!) that they are is wishful thinking. (And, I admit, annoying me, but that’s my own silly fault.) Granted, core hounds DID become tameable, but rest assured that people will probably find any new critters pretty quickly without exhaustive lists of “hopefuls”.
Red-and-silver Botanica dragonhawks can be tamed without sheeping the handlers to remove the “controlled” status. We sheeped the dragonhawk I tamed on my attempt and that went fine. Whether or not a beast counts as “already controlled” seems to be inconsistent and difficult to predict.
Will go look at Sunblade dragonhawks in the beta once it’s up. I want one badly, too, but I’ve mostly given up on them being made tameable.
Tundra Crawlers, the one outland worm family, are also “victims” of the “revert to original size” bug. Those things are HUGE; it’s hilarious when they do that while fighting for their hunter.
Also, realized I can test the tameability of Gorishi Hive Guards, since Ansawa never completed that quest on Live. I’ll go check that as well.
someone check Ursangous http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?npc=12678 !
WoWhead is listing a new Ferocity ‘Exotic’ beast called ‘Spirit Beast’. Given that their special ability is apparently an arcane blast with a DoT tick, I have a feeling this is mana wyrms, but can anyone find out what this is? If they’re gonna give us ghost wolves back (from SFK) I will weep tears of joy as I respec for 51BM.
Here’s the link to WoWhead -> http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?pet=46
maybe mana wyrms or new wyrms from Northrend
many new ferocity pet spells on wowhead, too!
link: http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?pets=0
Has anyone gotten into ZA on the test realms or beta to find out if the bears can be tamed now? Fingers crossed.
Someone check new WotLK bonespiders (like Carrion Fleshstripper http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?npc=30206 and Deep Crawler http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?npc=30279 ). it’s “beast”
ops, press error(
Swipe cooldown is now 5sec… add in the BM talent to reduce to 3.5sec and it gets interesting.
Also bad attitude is now 2 min CD on wowhead… (was 3??)… I’m thinking that there were a lot of changes here.
Maybe the bottom right one is the new pet?
http://wotlkwiki.info/up2/a/models/8962/mobs1.jpg
im pretty sure spiret beast is a mana wyrm, noting that it uses arcane abilities
Checked a few mana wyrms on the beta. All the ones I found were not tameable, so keep guessing.
Has anybody tried too Tame a Core Hound from Molten Core???!!
I’m on the PTR,been taming everything I could like a kid in a candy store.Everyone has stated the tameables I’ve tried already.
Sadly our Rose will no longer hold aggro with Sonic Blast having such a long CD.Rose is going to get stabled,never thought that would happen.
I wish I could try for a MC Core Hound,unfortunately I never got attuned for BRD let alone MC.Seen many Kurkens stomping about Orgrimmar,along with tons of Devilsaurs.Not seen a single Chimaera yet though.
Just something else to plan for after this goes live.Which will be awhile imo since they’ve borked so many quests after they started playing with our racials.
Next on my list is a Chimaera,though I intend to tame an owl.I just haven’t seen their family ability listed anywhere.
The Core Hounds in MC are tamable,(the Ancient Core Hounds)and yes its a pitty that the lava red CH are rare becouse people dont go to MC out of lazzyness and would rather form a line to tame Kurken or a Green Neon one from SMV.
Anyway, has there been any word on the bears in ZA becomeing tamable?
By the way Spirit Beasts are not Mana Wyrms!
Skittering crawlers on azuremyst isle are now tameable on the PTR – yay for all the crab fans out there
Did anyone know owls are now considered Birds of Prey on the PTR?I didn’t until I tamed a Male Kaliri Hatchling.It comes with Snatch and when tamed says Bird of Prey.I didn’t keep it long enough to check the on diet.Hopefully it eats fish now like the other Birds of Prey are supposed to.
I tamed a level 65 Bladewing Bloodletter on the PTR.Do you have any idea what a pain it is to find a level 65?It’s Froststorm Breath has been brought into line damage-wise.Still doesn’t slow either.
Savannah cubs now say tameable when beastlore’d but i suspect it’ll be like the botanica dragonhawk, some kinda handler controlling needed. I couldnt tame one with the mother dead or trapped, kept getting that annoying “creature is already controlled” message. Never the less, beastlore now says tameable :))
time to carry on working my way through petopia’s CBT list :P
Terrokarantula in beta is able to be frozen by freezing trap.
I’m not in the beta…but I know I’m not the only one who wants basilisks and pterrordax. If any of you wonderful people with better luck than me would like to agitate in favor of them as pets, I’d be very grateful. (Although I’m not in the beta, I’ve done my share of agitating on the PTR.)
Don’t ask me why, but I checked out the untamable crawlers in Westfall. They still cannot be tamed because they are under control of a murloc.
@Bradagore (88):
I didn’t tame Terrokarantula on PTR, but I did kill it on live the other day, and it jumped up and landed on its back just like a tiny spider. So, unless they changed t he animation, I guess it won’t be different from any other spider when tamed.
Yay! Bloodmyst hatchlings are now tameable :D:D:D:D No more having to make do with an orange ravager at low levels till about 16ish :D
Ammen vale moths can be tamed but ALL the blue moths on bloodmyst cannot be. You want a blue moth, ya gonna have to wait till you get to netherstorm :S
I tried to get in and tame an MC core hound, but it’s not soloable (At least to me!). When he patch hits live, I will likely get a couple friends to help me.
The real reason I don’t put more effort into it, I guess, is that The Kurken is just plain prettier. I want to do it for the ‘noone has a proper core hound from the core’ aspect, but aesthetically, I prefer The Kurken. And the ground shaking, foot stomping thing is cool… For about 10 minutes. Then it is just annoying and old.
Know what I really want? More /small/ pets. In 10 or 25 man instances, who wants something like a Core Hound getting in the way? The ever expanding need to have bigger pets baffles me.
I did manage to get into MC and get a core hound from there (died once) It’s just a case of being patient and knowing roughly where to FD to be safe from aggro.
Personally, I like the whole ground shaking, stompy thing, also the number of people on the PTR who have come grinding to a halt just to have a good look at my ikkle puppy (!) is huge. Am I gonna get a core hound when it goes live? YES! Am I gonna get a stompy, lava dribbling firey hound from MC? YOU BEAT YOUR BUTT I AM :D:D:D:D:D
Question: are the ghost wolves from SFK tamable ? I always wanted to have one and missed the patch bug when they were tamable…
