Name That Pet: Kelvar’s Frostsaber

Name That Pet: Kelvar & FrostsaberFinal Name: Volatigris

Today’s episode of Name That Pet comes to us from Kelvar, a level 60 dwarf hunter from the realm of Mok’nathal.

Kelvar writes:

I’m a dwarf hunter and I just tamed Shy-Rotam. I need a good name.

*****

Long, long ago, when Kelvar was young, he tamed a cheetah in Thousand Needles and named it Zoom. He and the cat became great friends, defeating the most powerful of monsters. But no matter what happened, Zoom always led the two north, like a compass.

Finally, when they reached Winterspring, Zoom kept running off so Kelvar released him. It was mysterious though. Why would a beast of the desert seem most at home here, in the snowy north?

After what seemed like years but was actually a few weeks, Kelvar, all alone in Winterspring decided to get a new pet. He strove north, towards the home of the mystical frostsabers and entered a large cave where a huge aqua striped frostsaber leaped out of the shadows!

Something was odd about this beast, actually more familiar than odd. Then Kelvar wondered.

“Zoom?” he called.

The frostsaber patriarch stared Kelvar in the eyes and he learned Zoom’s true story. Son of a leader, falling into a river, washing up in a desert, being adopted by cheetahs, meeting Kelvar, returning home. He had now returned to his family and was ready to set out with Kelvar once more, if the hunter could
handle the challenge.

The lord of the frostsabers leaped, but Kelvar was waiting. A glowing bolt shot forth from the dwarf’s bow, slowing the great cat. After moving forward just a few paces though, the beast was trapped in a wall of ice. The frostsaber king realized he had been bested and walked calmly to Kelvar’s side.
Kelvar was about to call him Zoom but realized that beast such as this required a name of strength, of nobility and decided to choose later. They walked out of the cave side by side into the cool, snowy air.

*****

Two things: for the purpose of naming, Shy-Rotam needs a boy/genderless name (since Zoom was a boy). And I dont want names like Zoom, that was a bad choice and I want a good name this time.

I actually think Zoom was a great name for a cheetah, but I completely understand wanting a more noble, strong name for this new incarnation.

So, what suggestions have we got for Kelvar?

well I named my shy-rotam caeruleus, I came across the name when I was doing research for geology and the color matched up pretty good, i have found that some latin names for pets sound and look cool too. here is a example of the mineral
    http://www.mindat.org/min-933.html

also shy-rotam is a female cat. sian-rotam is the male

Nice. I use Latin to name all of my characters. Soon after i started the system i used it to name my pets. I would however like to share a more off-beat name. I named my Ripfang Lynx from Netherstorm Avo, after the deity in Fable. After i got rid of him and had Sian-Rotam along my side, I considered naming him Avo too, but I wanted a different, but similar name. I thought of prefixes and suffixes that were related to family, and i ended up naming Sian, Avokin.

These are my latin dictionary’s words for Strong and Noble. Sometimes i take the most fluent parts of two words, like Strong and Noble in your case, and combine them. Like Convaservo, or Adservarx. Just some ideas, hope they help.

(Other languages, I’ve found, can work very well too, my friend uses Elvish)

    Arx – Stronghold

Adservo – To assert confidently or strongly

    Convalesco – To become Strong

    Dius – Noble

    Divinus – Noble

    Actaeon – Hunter

    Veredus – A strong steed, a Hunter.

    Socius – Partner

  7. Tyler Paradise - September 16th, 2008 @ 12:23 am UTC

I like Winter and Snow :D

  8. fatman - September 16th, 2008 @ 12:51 am UTC

What is it about “Zoom” that you don’t like? Is it because it is flippant or it is in English or not a proper name like Zeus etc? I just want to know what you don’t like so I won’t suggest stuff like MotherInLaw. :)

I suggest Kilimanjaro. I thought it meant Leopard in the Snows but the Wikipedia entry suggested that it might mean shiny/shining hill.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Kilimanjaro

  9. Evandelle - September 16th, 2008 @ 1:34 am UTC

    I suggest:

    Winsong
    and
Gwyn (means white snow in Welsh)

    hope that helps :)

  10. Sidnei - September 16th, 2008 @ 1:41 am UTC

    Psykotic ..

  11. Wolfington - September 16th, 2008 @ 6:53 am UTC

    Sleepingfire
    Inferno
    Fireclaw
    Firesong

Something not ice related would be a unique (and powerfull!) name.

  12. Scott - September 16th, 2008 @ 8:47 am UTC

Beautiful looking cat model, but I don’t know how you put up with the Beethoven-esque headshake sound…

    Maybe “Slobbercat”? jk

  13. Estella - September 16th, 2008 @ 8:49 am UTC

A lot of nice choices so far suggested. The name Frostbite could be a nice one, or Blizzard (if looking to play on the area in which the tiger could be caught).. or if you want something dwarf themed:Forge.

Good luck in naming your tiger. :)

  14. Fortius - September 16th, 2008 @ 11:53 am UTC

I have a Winterspring cat named Frostbite it is very fitting for a white cat and I have Shy-Rotam as well and named him Shiver.

  15. Zoblek - September 16th, 2008 @ 12:00 pm UTC

name that pet Snejok (snowball in Russian)

  16. Sydion - September 16th, 2008 @ 1:46 pm UTC

    СИЛЬНЫЙ or
“Seelniy” (As best as I can translate it)
means “Strong” in the frozen siberian tundra. >.>

    Just an idea!

  17. Aerye - September 16th, 2008 @ 2:23 pm UTC

Cerulian? It’s genderless, and fits his pretty color

…. then again, I’m biased, as that is my primary pet :)
Mine is named Myrddin, after the first cat I ever owned and adored. :)

  18. Avelara - September 16th, 2008 @ 3:15 pm UTC

Just a nitpick – it’s spelled Cerulean. I like the idea as a name though.

  19. Emowin - September 16th, 2008 @ 3:27 pm UTC

Unfortunatly you cant use Blizzard I tryed it on a white bear “name unavailable” blah blah blah. I would sugest:
    Lash
    Dehstroyer
    Wrath
    Zhadist
    Tehror
All of them big strong manly names, names of warriors from a book sieries called “The black Dagger Brotherhood”

  20. BubbAStEvE LaRiZ - September 16th, 2008 @ 6:22 pm UTC

Vintersorg it means Winters sorrow as in the sorrow of those who cross paths with you and your pet from the icelands!

  21. Elanesse - September 16th, 2008 @ 6:24 pm UTC

Well, since you’re a dwarf, I checked some websites for dwarvish words.

I’ve found a Tolkien Dwarvish Dictionary and an AD&D Dwarvish Dictionary. The AD&D seemed easier to check: http://www.delving.com/addword.html

Now, some ideas from that dictionary:
Daern: familiar, known (place, feature, or being)
    Rune: familiar, known
Samman: trusted friend, shield-brother (battle companion)
    Splendarr: bright, shining, beautiful, hopeful

  22. Lucutu - September 16th, 2008 @ 6:53 pm UTC

Powderpelt, Swifsnow, Winterburn, Iceclaw, Snowfang, or just plain Paws

  23. Lucutu - September 16th, 2008 @ 6:56 pm UTC

    oh, one more Frostmaw

  24. Luna - September 16th, 2008 @ 7:01 pm UTC

How about Yukiba? It’s the Japanese words for “snow” (yuki) and “fang” (kiba) mashed together. I think it would be a noble sounding name, and it definitely suits your cat’s origins and teeth. Just a thought.

  25. Kamalia - September 16th, 2008 @ 7:19 pm UTC

    I love that cat model! I wish I never released my Rak’Shiri… = /
Anyway, here’s a couple name suggestions:

    Tyrone – Greek for “King”
Keon – “Young Warrior” In Irish
    Karalis – “King” in Latvian
Cadifor – “Battle King” in Celtic

    Good luck! :)

  26. Sukulatae - September 16th, 2008 @ 10:06 pm UTC

I’ve always liked “Pride” for the big cats. As in a pride of lions. As your friend was the son of the leader, this would suit him.

  27. Hawkshadow - September 16th, 2008 @ 11:14 pm UTC

hmm here is a list of names i can think of off the top of my head, good luck!

Icefang. Icestorm, Iceclaw, Icefur,Frostfang, Frostfur, Frostnight, Frostlord, Frostfire, Frostwalker, Frostwarrior, Frostmoon, Nightfrost,Bluefrost, Bluefur, Nightsky, Frostshadow, Iceshadow, Darkfrost, Stormfrost, Duskfrost,Lunarian, Rakthor, Rikuain, Draidian, Frazor, Twilight, Dusk, Lord, Riku, Solorian, Starwalker, Starseeker, Bluefang, Guardian, Whitelord, Icelord, Whitestorm, Whitefrost, Drackon, Bluewarrior, Blueclaw, Blueking, Frost, Avalanche, Frostheart, Iceheart, Blueheart, Darikion, Akaishin, Ronack, Ganthor, Silverlight, Silvernight, Faidian, Hawkfrost, Icehawk, Froststrike, Mystic, Frostlight, Blueshadow, Azul, Darkfrost, Frostpride.

I always enjoy using words that coincide with the story of the animal; I love RP names. How about using something like:

Arecogerse: Sicilian for “to return home”?

  29. Sage Confucius - September 18th, 2008 @ 12:51 am UTC

I named my Frostsaber Pridewatcher ‘Alsius Tigris’ which is ‘Frost’ and ‘Tiger’ in Latin. There wasn’t enough room to properly decline it. :) I call him PT for Purple Tiger though.

  30. Gitsom - September 18th, 2008 @ 3:55 am UTC

My suggestion is “Rewa” (Ree-wah). Rewa was a princely state in India in the early 1900′s. It also happens to be the area where “white” tigers naturally occur and have been studied in the wild.

  31. Thornon - September 18th, 2008 @ 11:47 am UTC

I was thinking about a word that would reflect both strength and still show the frostsaber’s nobility. What about Glacier? That would be a name that reflects the coolness of the Frostsaber yet also would have a feel of power as glaciers are massive unstoppable moutains of ice that carve out a path in the land it travels over.

  32. Pennelope - September 23rd, 2008 @ 3:33 pm UTC

Oh a Frostsaber, what a great choice :-) i love frostsabers and
i actually made a little “backgound story” about my white Lion Adoni that
i have been having since level 17, where he is son of a great male frost saber and to a white lioness. But well back to the names
when i hear the name Zoom or the word Frostsaber
i get the kind of names into the heard like those:

    Skylight
Gin (whitch mearns Silver in japanese)
    Gintora (Silvertiger in japanese)

hope it helped on the choice of getting
a name for your new cat :-) and remember our old pets is always ad the
side of us everytime we need it

  33. Stykkfree - September 23rd, 2008 @ 4:10 pm UTC

You could name him Swiftstorm or Frosty or Tigrost

  34. Kelvar - September 25th, 2008 @ 8:41 pm UTC

@Sage Confucius- Thanks, I finally picked a name. I chose volatigris (volatilis=swift), the latin really inspired me.

@Everyone- Thanks, there were so many great names
