Name That Pet: Vadise & HyenaToday’s Name That Pet request is courtesy of Vadise, a Draenei hunter with hyena in need of a unique name.

Vadise writes:

My character in game is named Vadise. I’m on a roleplaying server, but I’ve yet to develop much of a personality for her.

I -have- however, always seen her as being intelligent, aware of her surroundings, powerful, beautiful, elegant and well put together in terms of her appearance.

I’ve picked a hyena as her first pet because no one ever has one and I love the way they run and the sounds they make. I love being so unique that I also want it to have a very unique name, but also one that is funny and possibly silly, one that is quirky, and that catches people off guard/makes them stop and look.

The name doesn’t necessarily have to reflect upon Vadise herself, as hyenas are obviously -not- beautiful and well put together, but I think my hyena is elegant in the way it runs, and is also intelligent, aware of its surroundings, and powerful.

I’d also like to add that as a side hobby in WoW, I enjoy tracking down every rare creature in the zone I’m in and slaying it.

Unique, funny, possibly silly, quirky, attention-getting … sounds like a hyena, all right! Okay, let’s see what we can do!

  3. I love hyenas too. The sort of purring growl they make is adorable. Plus, they are more animated than some pets, like the worg looking wolves. I had a red one from SM named Poptart for a while, as well as a barrens one named Yahtzee (forgive any bad spelling if that’s wrong). Perhaps you could use those. Or, if you want something with a little bit more meaning, you can use the name of my tauren’s hyena: Ahanu. It’s an Algonquin (Native American) name that means “He laughs” which I think suits hyenas perfectly.

    BTW I love rare pets too. My tauren’s hyena actually was Giggler, the rare white one from Desolace…whom is immune to frost traps unfortunately. Lucky I was still able to tame him on the first try.

  7. I was thinking about grabbing a hyena…

    For some reason, the name “Scooter” hits me as perfect for a hyena. If I ever get one you can bet that’ll be its name :) Kind of a playful, mischievous word.

    Hurruu (Which reminds me of the sound the hyena makes when you send them to charge.)

    I’ve always loved hyenas. I’m raising a second hunter just so I can have all the pets I want come wrath (since Hyenas are gonna RULE then XD. But man, a wolf, a hyena, corehound and chimera, and then my ghost wolf My stable slots are filled T-T)
    My favorite hyenas were always the bright purple ones like the ones in Thousand needles, but I tamed the rare 51 one in Blasted Lands.

    I’d use it if ever i get another hunter going but i want the purple rare or the red one!

  13. Haha, I love tracking rares too, to take pictures of ‘em (And kill ‘em of course. I want teh lewts! :P)

    Anyways, hyenas. Long time ago, before I got my überboar, I had a hyena. He was the same color as yours actually. I named him Clown, just for the heck of it.
    I like Garae’s suggestions too, especially Emdanka.

  16. I have a hyena too, which I am in the process of naming! He’s the red one from SM and aesthetically matches my character perfectly. Of course, while I can’t recommend any names running around with a hyena named Hyena, I can wish you good luck naming and thanks for posting (so I don’t have to :P)!!

    And regarding Giggler, maybe he just resisted the ice trap I set down. Either way, it was terribly annoying.

  21. For most all my hunters, I was quick to pick up a Hyena or two. They are rare, and even if you see another, there’s a very little chance it’s the same skin as yours.

    On my BE hunter, I’ve a Scarlet Tracking Hound (the red hyenas) which I named Love. It was something playful and..pun-inducing. IE: Love hurts.

    On my Nelf hunter, I’ve Snort the Heckler (the purple one) and named it Tantrum.

    It depends on how playful or serious you want to be in the name I suppose. My boyfriend was dying for me to name my purple one, on my Nelf, after a My Little Pony – IE: Rainbow Dash (because I often say that Nelves are the product of a MLP and Lumberjack’s bad one night stand).

    Other names that might be nice would be naming it after a rare spawn:

    Snort
    Giggler
    Bonepaw

    Though it may be an action or something:

    Riot
    Chase
    Dash

  23. I think a cute name with a bit of elegance and power would be nice for your special pet.

    Something like:
    Ellie (since you see her as being elegant)
    Fiora
    Talla
    Siri (pronounced SEE-ree)
    Gemini
    Jassi

  32. If you want a name to make people stop and stare: Owl.
    If you’re on an RP realm make up some stuff about it having a personality disorder or something similar.

  35. I have raised many a Hyena and have taken pride in all their names. My first tame was Snort the Heckler, whom I named ‘Snort’. It was too perfect.

    Years later, I made a Dreanai hunter and walked her to The Barrens (gankville for me) and tamed Snort The Heckler again. I named him Heckleberry. Not many people get it, but when they did I got tons of compliments. Like, Huckleberry Hound? Snort the Heckler? Yeah.

    Err, bragging aside, I’m trying to find a name for the Scarlet Teacking Hound I tamed with my 63 Hunter. Here are a few names I’ve been tossing around:

    Ruffles
    Truffles (more of a Boar name, but still)
    Victor
    Victoria
    Gingersnap

    The model WoW Hyena are after is the Spotted Hyena (genus Crocuta), so Crocuta may be good.

    Also, there is a mythical beasts named ‘Crocotta’ (also known as corocotta, crocuta, or yena) which was said to be like a mix between a dog and wolf. It could mimic the sound of human speech, had insanly strong jaw strength, and it’s spine was so ridgid, it had to turn around to see behind it. (Much like the WoW model)

    Those brown hyena are beautiful, and you two make a perfect combo. Aren’t Hyena the best? :D Grats on the unique tame and good luck with your new friend!

  36. I like several of these suggestions, especially Schadenfreude. That one’s an intellectual jewel of a name :]
    However I’d also like to add that I see my hyena as being a male.

  38. I like going the authentic route, I like the name Kifo, it means death in swahili. Or Kumbo, which means destruction. Also, adding -leta or -ukilia means “to bring about” DSo, kifoleta or kifoukilia means to bring about death, or deathbringer.

  40. I have tamed one of the white hyenas and named him Itchii because of the way he scratches himself when he’s idle.
    I have a scarlet hound on another hunter that I named Tala, which means red wolf in Sioux

  43. I love My hyenas for pvp, named one “the general” and the other “pedro” just kinda depends on my mood lol
