Mania Doesn’t Live Here Anymore
Today is the last day on one of my larger contracts … and unfortunately I’m not done with the work yet. (Stupid recalcitrant build!)
In about an hour, my husband and I are going to pick up the keys for our new rental house. It’s only a few miles down the road from where we live now. We have until the end of the month to get moved out of our apartment, but the couple who is moving into it after us is patiently waiting in a hotel for us to get out, so we’re going to try to hurry. (Apparently they just came back from a military posting overseas.)
On Sunday, we are flying to Austin for the Austin Game Develeper’s Conference (AGDC). We’ll be back on Thursday. This is my first year going since the GDC people took over the Austin conference, and already I’m not impressed with the changes (like the price hike!) — but my husband has people to meet for business and I agreed to go with him.
I’ll have my laptop (which is now my main computer) through all of these events, so technically I won’t be out of touch. But I may not be able to keep up with the news, post, or respond to e-mail and comments quite as well as I’d like to for the next week or so. I’ll do what I can, and in the meantime you always have the forums!

Featherkitty: Awesome.
Mania: Thx for the heads-up.
Well don’t get too stressed about it all and try to have fun even if you’re starting out skeptical… ;o)
Laptops plus a wireless aircard from your fav telco, just like being at home with a desktop. Have fun!
I saw the title of your post and it scared! :O
I was scared, too.
As I saw the title I first thought Mania is giving up on the Blog and/or Petopia :(
But btt: Wish you much fun at ADGC and not so much stress with your move ;)

and have fun at the gameing place i would remeber it but iv never herd of it.
oh by the way mania did you copy a hunter in the murmur relm?
You do realize that Hurricane Ike is currently doing a doozy on Austin, Texas?
I primarily use a lap top too, since I move around so much. I just have to make sure I back up my writings in multiple places….
Anyway! Have a good time, Mania! Rest assured you’ll be missed for those brief periods of time when you are out of contact!
Hey mania, I apoligize for prying, b ut what exactly do you do? no real reason, though, just curious. Was wonderin what online celenritys did for a living =P
Awww…I wanted to get your opinion on the new additional cat skill “Rake”!

/agree
Yah me too I freaked out. A lot. Until I actually read the post.
Heh! I’m sorry about that, guys. I didn’t mean to scare you. I just wanted a catchy post title.
We picked up the keys on schedule, and the new place is an utter mess. We have to go get pictures of everything before we can even start moving in in case there are disputes when we move out. *sigh* It’ll be okay with some cleaning and minor work, though. And my build eventually finished, although I still have to whip out another doc or two before I can call this contract done.
MiT: Our flights may be delayed, but barring catastrophe in inland Texas they think the conference will still be fine. We are keeping an eye on it, though. (And things definitely look rough for the Texas coast.)
Sabrejak: I’ll be in and out of touch, so I’ll try to post stuff and get involved as I can. :>
Harvok: That’s not prying, especially since I brought it up myself. (Although I would like the clarify that I am hardly a celebrity, online or not.)
Mostly I do contract programming (C/C++, Java) and some web work (CSS, PHP). I also occasionally take design and production contracts, but since I work from home those are less common. My husband does the same, but he also (rather accidentally) became the CTO of a tiny 3 person company that’s involved with matching Flash game developers to Flash game sponsors (like portal sites). And he works on his own small games (Flash and downloadable) on the side.
*Laughs* Mania, to those of us who visit your blog and forums, you are a bit of celebrity, and I’d honestly turn to you for pet advice before any of the other big online hunters.
I certainly enjoy your “company” to that of the latest crop of “popular” celebrities! Have fun in Texas, stay dry.
definately a celebrity, I always look to you for my pet tips and news and now all my friends do too since i told them. I’d be lost without Petopia and your blogs.
Have fun in Texas and good luck with the move.
OMG Mania your a girl!?!? ( No offence but it came as a shock for me)
Anyway i hope you and your husband will eventualy get enough monney to buy your own house!
austin is sweet. born n raised 24 years here. and no … we haven’t seen a drop of rain, just a nice breeze (aka not windy) as always, people freak out and nothing happens here

Sorry you’re under a lot of pressure these days, Mania. I hope everything eases up for you soon.
I read that Zenimax Online Studios is looking for help in a number of positions at the Austin conference this year. It’s your chance to make sure the rumored Elder Scrolls Online has a pet class. :)
Tarjin: Thanks, but no thanks. I’ve had my fill of the regular working world. There’s only one MMO I’d come out of my ‘semi-retirement’ to run, and that’s AC1. (Okay, okay, or AC2.)
Understood, Mania. As for the title, it did make me wonder how many people know the song “Mary Doesn’t Live Here Any More,” which is now going through my head in the version by Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians. 0.0
