Name That Pet: Cotytto’s Cat

Name That Pet: Cotytto & CatFinal Name: Sacmis

Today’s Name That Pet request comes to us by way of Mania’s Forums. But unfortunately Cotytto hasn’t quite found the perfect name yet, so we’re going to solicit more suggestions here as well

Cotytto writes:

I just tamed a new pet. I was in Winterspring and just happened across Rak’shiri. After dying multiple times due to the Stalkers in the area, I tamed this beauty.

Now I’m usually pretty good at naming my pets, but I’ve never owned a cat before. I just never liked them much. Seeing this changed my mind because it is really a great looking beast. So I’d like to ask for a little help with the naming.

Now about my character: Currently at level 58 soon to be 59 Blood Elf Beastmastery Huntress named Cotytto. I solo everything (Uldaman was not fun), not in any guild. Engineering and Skinning are my professions. I’d prefer something serious and mythical or lore related as my character’s name is of a Thracian Goddess. I’m not on a roleplay server (though I do enjoy playing on them and wouldn’t mind transferring to a good one), but I don’t really mind if I’m the only one that understands the meaning behind the name.

Later Cotytto wrote me to add:

I haven’t found one yet. Nothing suggested really pops out as a name befitting Rak’Shiri and the effort that went into taming it. Some names of gods and goddesses were okay, but not outstanding.
There are only six characters named Cotytto playing WoW according to Armory. I’d like something nearly unique as that.

Well we’ll see what we can so!

And while we’re on the subject, you should drop by these threads in the forums and help out with their naming needs as well:

You could name him Shinku, which is Japanese for “hardship” and can also mean “crimson”. The hardship meaning would represent your task in taming him and trying to avoid those horrible Stalkers, and the crimson meaning could represent the blood you shed in reaching him. It’s a simple easy-to-pronounce name, but has a deep meaning I suppose

What about Sitalces ,Burebista or Amadocus (Thracian kings, so could be assumed they would serve and obay a Thracian Godess :).)

Vintersorg means “Winter Sorrow,” as in the woe of those who come face to face with this creature of the frozen woodland deeps!

why not simply stick with the name the beast came with and call him/her

    Rak’Shiri

atleast it fits lore vise.. And as you yourself stated, nothing else really seems to be fitting the mighty beast.

Mace – Hecate (or Hekate) is the goddess of beasts, goddess of witchcraft and witches, the goddess of the three way crossroads, guide of the newly dead, lady of the moon and all three aspects thereof; primarilly tied to the dark moon.

Hey, you asked, and no, that is not from a site, that’s just off the top of my head.

Now as for names for the beautiful kitty,

    Azurina
    Skylia
    Caspia

    Glaciers (*words somewhat altered)
    Moonmaw*
    Isabelle
    Moondance*

    Random (star related)
Austrina – from Corona Austrina (Southern Crown)
Talitha – star w/in Ursa Major Constellation.
Ankaa – the only named star in the Phoenix Constellation.
Asterope- a star from w/in the Taurus Constellation.
Pleione – another from the Taurus Constellation.

    Bast or Bastet
    Sekhmet

Both egyptian goddesses, both associated with cats, both depicted with cat heads, both seen as defenders of the pharoahs. Bast however became the more gentle, the more domesticated of the two (mainly because lower eqypt was conquered by upper eqypt and Sekhmet replaced her as a warrior goddess).

Based on your post, personally i would go for Sekhmet. The tough warrior goddess goes better with the idea of a hunter soloing everything. Although both have fairly aggressive names, Bast meaning “devourer” and Sekhmet “(One) Before Whom Evil Trembles, the Mistress of Dread, and the Lady of Slaughter.”

    Thank you Amaryllis!

I looked up Sekhmet and found she had a Greek version of her name.
    Now Greek isn’t Thracian,but it’s close enough.So that is what I named her.Sacmis.

I would like to thank everyone who made suggestions. Many great names were put forth, and myth?My sister named her irl kitten Amadocus after seeing your post.I thought you might like to know.:)

Zalmoxis is the Thracian word for hide. Most BM hunters I know including myself have prowl and in a RP setting it would make for an interesting name in that in it prowl mode it could be said to be hiding and waiting for the first attack. You could also look for other Thracian words like for shadow since you solo a lot you pet would be your shadow so to speak.

“Asti” might be a short name I would pick… from a Greek City… derived from Astica.

    Whiskers
