The Magic of Beta: Ghost Hydra & Slime

WotLK Beta: Xardion & Ghost HydraI just got an e-mail from Xardion, a hunter in the beta who has been quite helpful with tips and screenshots. He noticed a little something odd today …

All the spirits from the Oracle daily quest “A Cleansing Song” are marked as crocolisks and tamable. (This is probably a bug.) They are skinned as a ghost croc, ghost hydra, and a slime.

I had switched to Oracle from Frenzyheart, and when the hydra spawned I Beast Lore’d it out of habit. Let’s just say I had to fly over to Nesingwary’s ASAP to switch out my devilsaur to tame it and the slime.

The only problem is that the hydra is a little small after the exotics, since the game treats it as a crocolisk.

I can just imagine!

WotLK Beta: Xardion & SlimeUnfortunately Xardion is probably right that this is a bug — probably all three of the creatures were copied from a tameable croc and aren’t intended as pets at all. But even so, they are pretty absolutely cool right now!

All three of them — the Spirit of Ha-Khalan (croc), the Spirit of Atha (hydra), and the Spirit of Koosu (slime) — are level 80, which means I won’t be running out to get one with Mania today. (And I’m still waiting on my pre-made characters to transfer as well.)

The ghostly crocolisk looks pretty cool too, although Xardion didn’t send me a shot with him tamed. You can see him in the wild in the screenshot below, however. (The blue effect behind/through him is a waterfall, I believe, not some weird spell.)

Hydra!!!!OMFG…i hope they keep this bug when live too…

  2. Seidouyumi - September 7th, 2008 @ 9:00 pm UTC

I actually have to say that seeing someone next to a ‘tamed’ hydra, I’d love to see one as an exotic pet.

  3. Selesti - September 7th, 2008 @ 9:13 pm UTC

I think Hydras should be normal pets, if they become pets at all. Six exotics is plenty for me.

  4. empello - September 7th, 2008 @ 9:21 pm UTC

Mania, Dont you think if you post this some 1 is more likly to tell blizz?

  5. Kalasha - September 7th, 2008 @ 9:47 pm UTC

Relax man, if folks are taming these creatures you can be sure it is already all over the chat channels. And I m sure at least SOME blizz employees read those evry now and then ^^ All the same that hydra does look cool, but I m still running to silithus on my first chance, and get me a creepy crawly.

Keep up the good work Mania.

  6. Mania - September 7th, 2008 @ 9:54 pm UTC

You know, it would never have occurred to me not to post this. If it is a bug — and at the very least the fact that all three spirits are considered Crocolisks must be — then Blizzard will fix it. And it would be better if they fixed in during beta.

  7. Kristy - September 7th, 2008 @ 10:12 pm UTC

Yeah, it’s gotta be a bug.

  8. hyena84 - September 7th, 2008 @ 11:19 pm UTC

OOOOOOOOOOOOZZZES! *EXPLODES FROM SHEER GLEE* even if its a bug.at some point.there were tameable oozes…

  9. Palladiamors - September 7th, 2008 @ 11:19 pm UTC

Agreed, and even if Mania hadn’t posted it, some one else would have and no doubt already has.

Why all the hate for exotics? Each class has their own specialty, and I think its great that beast masters are getting the ability to REALLY emphasize on what the tree represents: Pets. I do think there needs to be at least one new, non-exotic mob, preferably more, but if they end up with around ten exotic mobs then I won’t complain.

  10. Celeglad - September 7th, 2008 @ 11:22 pm UTC

Wow, that Hydra screenshot just solidifies what i’ve been saying since before Wrath was even announced: Tamable hydras plz, kthxbye!

Pet slime, doesn’t quite do it for me. But the hydra, especially since it is one of the few beasts with both walking and swimming animations fully programmed, should be almost a no-brainer to throw into the ‘new tameables’ pool… I personally love the green-blue hydras outside BFD in Ashenvale, but even if I have to give that particular skin up I’d just be thrilled to have one at all.

  11. Dweezill - September 7th, 2008 @ 11:34 pm UTC

I would prefer the ooze myself. I have thought soe of the oozes were kinda cool looking. I would also like to hear them sloshing around as they followed me around. Speaking of “exotics”…. I still don’t thin there are enough “exotics” to make me anna spend 51 points…. although, the Kurken alone has made me think about it. Thank goodness the wasps are not exotic…. if they were,I would have wasted the 51 points to get a Kurken and a wasp. I am happy with the way things turned out.

Hydra! HYDRA! plz, check El Pollo Grande http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?npc=659

Niby has to be about the funniest and most funny character in WoW…..

  14. shir_kirakira - September 8th, 2008 @ 12:40 am UTC

Hahah, what a funny bug. And a ghost croc would be super creepy. (Too bad its probably going to be removed once the game goes live).

  15. fearstalker - September 8th, 2008 @ 12:48 am UTC

Ghost croc would be cool.. hope they stay, and stay non-exotic

Fact is, few raiders will be BM in the xpac. MM is going to be king, because BM is going to be haste-capped far too quickly, unless Blizz changes something. The Nax10 set has haste on every item, and most of the offset has haste too. There’s no we we’ll be able to use it all without being gimped. Even for soloing it won’t be optimal, but will be passable. But unless something changes, MM will be the new raid spec, and even they will be gimped a bit if they max out on the haste.

The exotic pets will be fun, but when it comes to raiding, you won’t want to be BM.

  16. Rikaku - September 8th, 2008 @ 1:27 am UTC

I dunno Fearstalker, alot of the pets have very nifty abilities for raiding. I don’t see BM going out anytime soon. But, if it does happen, I’m never changing specs. I’m BM 4 Life. ^^

    I’d like to see the crocolisk stay, but as someone who cannot STAND that annoying croc hissing, I wouldn’t mind it’s absence ^^;;;

  17. fearstalker - September 8th, 2008 @ 1:41 am UTC

    @Rikaku

The pets aren’t the problem. The problem is all the haste on the gear (look at the Nax10 set) is going to hinder our dps. Basically, because of SS, we BM hit the haste cap faster than anyone else. So the effect is the haste will speed your autoshot, which is at most 30% of your dps, while the rest of your dps (pet and steady-shot) are uneffected by the haste. (your steady-shot does fire faster, but it is still limited by the GCD, which isn’t changed by haste). MM doesn’t have as much as a problem, because they hit the haste-cap later.

So, the exotic pets are great for raiding. The limits on our dps due to poor gear itemization isn’t so great for raiding…

  18. Jester - September 8th, 2008 @ 3:01 am UTC

Steady shot won’t clip auto shot anymore and the damage is being adjusted. It’ll be fine.

  19. Kristy - September 8th, 2008 @ 4:09 am UTC

Mere *6* Exotics are not “enough”. Regular pets outnumber Exotics 25, to 6. Anyways YEAH, there should NOT be hating on special Exotics in here! I agree Pall, about getting the Beast Mastery ability. Anyways I really hope they add more Exotic pets. And I’m staying Beast Mastery for the Exotic pets!

  20. Rykros - September 8th, 2008 @ 4:48 am UTC

Needs more tamable Hydra; but seeing it like that, I Actually prefer it at the that size than in the wild, and im very much a bigger is better man 0_o

  21. Farseer Lolotea - September 8th, 2008 @ 5:08 am UTC

I’m still rooting for basilisks and pterrordax (exotic, standard, I don’t care).  Hydras might be a nice addition.

  22. bbr - September 8th, 2008 @ 8:22 am UTC

I could see hydras becoming an exotic family to pick though.
Don’t see why they’d exclude those.

    Sharks would be weird.

  23. Jaedenkaal - September 8th, 2008 @ 9:57 am UTC

Haste also reduces steady shot’s cast time, even now, I think mine’s running around a 1.15sec cast time

  24. Featherkitty - September 8th, 2008 @ 10:11 am UTC

    SOMEONE CHECK THE HIPPORGRYPHS!!!!!

  25. Myst - September 8th, 2008 @ 10:51 am UTC

Hydras really should be made tamable. It would be a crying shame if they didn’t after going to all the trouble for silly things like worms.

  26. Rikaku - September 8th, 2008 @ 11:59 am UTC

Featherkitty: I’m sure that the second hippogryphs become tameable, we’ll know lol

  27. Zoblek - September 8th, 2008 @ 1:27 pm UTC

    someone check Wild Eleks…

  28. Palladiamors - September 8th, 2008 @ 2:42 pm UTC

Yer not really making any sense there, Fearstalker. Your citing one stat as a reason for BM fail, and not even really taking it to its logical extreme. You are also going on the assumption that all raiding gear will have haste, and that hunters will still be using the oh-so-inane steady shot ‘rotation’. You also failed to take into account longevity, and the glyph to further reduce the cooldown on beastial wrath. I don’t see BMs being out of the running for raids at all, I definitely see them still being big contenders for DPS, and pets will bring even more in the form of their family abilities. That being said, its still just a bit to early to be able to tell.

Kristy, I totally agree. I think there needs to be at least a couple more non-exotic pets, since not everyone is BM, but mean time, BRING ON THE EXOTICS!! YEA BABY!!

  29. Noba - September 8th, 2008 @ 2:43 pm UTC

Tamable hydras would be fun.. Maybe they’ll make those cute little fae drakes into tamable beasts. Prolly not, i think theyre dragonkin >.< I wish they’d fix some things with the old pets, animation-wise. Wind Serpents twitch at normal run speed, and the Worg wolves appear to have a gimpy back leg while running and waddle to walk. Oh, and cats need a dmg boost or stun chance to make prowl viable..

  30. Kristy - September 8th, 2008 @ 2:49 pm UTC

Woot, glad you agree with me Pall! More Exotics, yes! 25 to a mere 6 isn’t fair. >_< lol

  31. Infares - September 8th, 2008 @ 4:12 pm UTC

I think the exotic pet talent (I refuse to call it by its name!) should allow a select number of nonbeast pets as well. Mostly like the Ranger taming from DND, you could take feats that allowed you to tame magical beasts, dragonkin, etc.

They could have a quest where you capture one of those undead Green hatchlings off of that li’l island off of bloodmyst and revert it to a sort of Drake form after breaking the curse of undeath on it.

    A guy can dream!

  32. Kristy - September 8th, 2008 @ 4:16 pm UTC

IF, Devilsaurs are getting smaller, and I think they are (sadly), then it’s only right if rhinos and core hounds get smaller too! >_> -_-

  33. Deidare - September 8th, 2008 @ 5:14 pm UTC

Hmph Hydras, eh? Well i hope the make them a pet at least an exotic or somthing i mean if they dotn i wouldnt see why they would because they have two feet so there able to walk on land well anyway ill keep my fingers crossed til that day comes (please let that day come haha).

  34. Deidare - September 8th, 2008 @ 5:15 pm UTC

    dont*

  35. Shinryu Masaki - September 8th, 2008 @ 8:17 pm UTC

    @fearstalker

So you’re saying BM won’t be raid viable because Serpent’s Swiftness and too much haste on the gear will make them haste capped faster? How is that a bad thing? This just means that BM hunters won’t have to gem for haste. I’m pretty happy with that.

  36. Ketari - September 8th, 2008 @ 10:24 pm UTC

Palladiamors: Actually he’s wrong, but your reasoning is also wrong.

In raids, BM looks to be the only even remotely viable option from a mana standpoint, assuming (as I am) that getting up to three thrill procs off a single explosive shot (and thus is actually returning mana) is a bug.

  37. Moiri - September 9th, 2008 @ 3:14 am UTC

Just something that I have been wondering. What happens if someone goes BM, gets an exotic pet, and the switches talent trees? Does the exotic go away?

  38. Infares - September 9th, 2008 @ 4:19 am UTC

IF the pet is currently active when you swap out, it’ll become unsummonable, and you basically won’t be able to have a pet at all until you spec back into BM and stable your exotic pet.

Otherwise, if you own an exotic pet but it’s in your stable when you swap out of BM, the pet will simply be unable to be moved into your main pet slot thenceforth until you spec back into Beast Mastery.

  39. Infares - September 9th, 2008 @ 4:23 am UTC

Shinryu Masaki: Apparently a lot of the new gear for post-70 is itemized like shit and will have a lot of haste on it. Basically between SS and your quiver you’ll be at 1.5s cast Steady Shot inductions, and any haste over that will just yield faster autoshots which at least are unfettered from the shot rotation mechanic. Nevertheless that will only benefit builds that use the Wild Quiver and Go for the Throat talents aside from a meager DPS increase.

Hopefully there will be options to forego most of that extraneous haste gear in favor of more agility and crit rating.

  40. Lin - September 11th, 2008 @ 8:08 am UTC

But, what does a Slime eat?

  41. Elixiris - September 11th, 2008 @ 12:28 pm UTC

They’re changing SS to be 2 secs cast time instead of 1.5, so as of this: haste WILL be more needed.

Btw… I believe slimes would eat anything. xD

  42. Gurluas - September 12th, 2008 @ 9:25 am UTC

Currently it eats the same as crocolisk…Can theese still be tamed in the last beta push?

  43. Forest - September 22nd, 2008 @ 2:13 pm UTC

O.o the Hydra, is cool. There should be more “aquatic-ish” pets.

  44. Choo - October 10th, 2008 @ 10:18 pm UTC

Curse you Blizz, MAKE HIPPORGRYPHS TAMEABLE!!!
    -Falls to knees and sobs-
Though, Hydras as pets would be cool. 8D
