Name That Pet: Bellatrixl’s Owl

Bellatrixl & OwlBellatrixl, a Blood Elf hunter from Eonar, is looking for some suggestions to name her new pet owl. Bellatrixl writes:

My character’s name is Bellatrixl, named after the Harry Potter character Bellstrix Lestrange. Like the one in Harry Potter she is loyal to her allies and would go to the edges of the earth to help them, but cross her friends and you found yourself a great enemy. And don’t even think of going near the Horde leaders with bad intentions.

But the worst thing you can do is kill her pets. She and her pets like any other hunter share a special bond. She has had many pets, the first AngelofDark the black worg, DragonHeart the windserpent, Icesaber (King Bangladash) the white tiger, Moonfrost (Rak’Shiri) the blueish rare sabertooth, and the most recent, the unnamed owl known to most as Gutripper.

When I saw him I knew I wanted that owl. I tried to tame him numerous times and failed; ’til today when thanks to a few fellow guild members I finally got this great owl. The only problem is I need him a name. I would prefer a mythical name and as you can tell I’m a big Harry Potter fan. Any ideas?

We do a decent amount of serious pet naming here on Name That Pet, and some seriously silly naming as well. So I’m excited to see what we can come up as a mythical, possibly Harry Potter-flavored name. Suggestions, anyone?

    Hi Bellatrixl!

well, If you like Harry Potter I googled 2 Harry Potter names –

    Hedwig – She/He is Harry Potter’s owl
    Pigwidgeon – She/He is Ronald Weasley’s Owl

I did google Bellstrix Lestrange to see if she had a pet owl (I don’t really know alot about Harry Potter) but I found out she didn’t have an Owl – Oh well!
    Hope this helps!

    Hiya Again Bellatrixl –

Was fun talking to you on Eonar! But how’s Lestrange for a pet name to finish you’re character’s name?

How about Hermes? It’s the name of the swift messenger of the gods in Greek mythology, and also the name of Percy’s owl in Harry Potter.

And what about “Lestrange”? it could be a good complement to your name :P

Maybe Grim, the Omen of death? I named my black wolf Grim, and I can alway say it’s because of Church Grims (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_Grim), but it’s also kind of a hidden Potter reference. ;)

Sure, the name is most fitting for a wolf, but I think it could also work for beautiful Mr. Gutripper.

I researched names from the Harry Potter series and chose the names I thought would best suit your magestic owl:

    Phineas (after Phineas Black)
    Sirius (after Sirius Black)
Errol (an owl belonging to the Weasley family)
    Everard (a headmaster of Hogwarts)
    Volkov (a Bulgarian Quidditch Beater)

I love Harry Potter, and Luna was one of my favorite characters. As owls are “night creatures”, what about Luna?

What about Avery? I believe he was a Death Eater.

Doloros, after the torture spell in Harry Potter. It means ‘Suffering’ in latin too.

Hi there Bella, you might recognize my gravatar if you follow The Leaky Cauldron website…

As a hunter, I’ve owned a few owls over the past couple of years. I named one Minerva after Professor McGonagall, and since then I’ve named all other owls I tame Nicodemus. This is a NIMH reference, but also a reference to the Pharisee who liked Jesus… But that’s just me.

If you want to be true to the Black family’s alignment with Slytherin, you may want to consider the following names:

    Phineas / Nigellus
    Rodulphus
    Regulus / Arcturus
    Horace / Slugworth
    Severus
    Salazar

    Hope this helps!

    Here’s some Babelfish:

    Italian for Wise: Saggio
    German for Wisdom: Klugheit
    Sage is good
    Italian for Owl: Gufo (haha)
    Portuguese for Owl: Coruja
Spanish for Owl: Buho, for wise: Sabio
    Dutch for Cunning: Sluw
French for Cunning: Adroit (used in English too as a synonym)
German for Cunning: Schlau (like the sound of this one)
Portuguese for Cunning: Destreza (good feminine name, along with Coruja)
Italian for Talon: Matrice (nice original name)
Spanish for Talon: Garra (also pretty cool sounding)

How about Archimedes? (Merlin’s companion owl).

I tried to name mine a variant of Captain Snow (the owl in the first Redwall book by Brain Jacques) but couldn’t get past the filters for naming conventions. I eventually called mine Warbeak, after Queen Warbeak Sparra from the same book.
