Name That Pet: Jaffer’s Warp Stalker

Jaffer & Warp StalkerToday we have a special cross-over episode of Name That Pet.

Jaffer, a Night Elf hunter in the guild <The Unit> on the PvP realm of Korgath sent me a naming request some weeks ago. When I regretfully told him how backlogged I was with requests, he posted his tale to the forums. But since he hasn’t quite found the perfect name yet, I wanted to highlight his post and see if we can’t get him a few more suggestions.

I’m going to go ahead and repeat Jaffer’s request here for those readers who tune in via RSS feed. Jaffer wrote:

I am looking for a name for my new warp stalker. I’m not on a role play realm, but I enjoy role playing.

Jaffer is a collector. He has looked at all the rare pets there are. His first was a beautiful black wind serpent, ‘Dreadfang’, which has been his companion and close friend since being tempted from the corrupted depths of the Wailing Caverns.

Jaffer had heard rumours coming from Outland that an amazing beast had been discovered, one with the ability to bent space and blink across the battlefield. When Jaffer first laid eyes on one of these stunning beasts, he was breathless. The ‘Echo’ enjoyed the fish that was offered to it, and it slowly became attached to the hunter.

Jaffer was happy that he had tamed these amazing creatures, when he heard word of a wolf spirit being held by the grimtotem taurens. Gathering his friends, Jaffer set forth to free it. After hours of battling the taurens Jaffer saw one summon the wolf spirit. Moving with an unnatural speed, Jaffer broke the bond between the tauren and the wolf. After the battle, Jaffer looked to the freed spirit. Realising how special she was, the hunter offered her a place by his side, naming her ‘Kiviya’.
After finding the wolf, Jaffer had to teach him how to fight and survive. Looking to his pets, Jaffer reluctantly had to choose one to lose. Dreadfang, or Fang as he was affectionately known, had been with Jaffer for years, and had managed to find a special spot in Jaffer’s heart. Unfortunately for Echo, he was the only choice that Jaffer could make.

Jaffer returned to the forests of Terokkar and released Echo. Jaffer watched his warp stalker wander between the trees, a tear running down his cheek as he did so. On his flight back to Shattrath, Jaffer saw a blood elf mage moving through the trees, slaughtering any warp stalker he could find Fearing the worst, Jaffer mounted onto his nether drake the second his gryphon landed. Speeding back towards he had released Echo, thoughts and fears sped through his mind.

When Jaffer reached the clearing, he saw several corpses, but none of them Echo. Just as he was turning away, Jaffer heard a screech of pain, recognising it as Echo, Jaffer turned and ran towards the sound, loading his rifle as he moved. Jaffer rounded a tree to be met with a horrid sight. There was the mage, standing over the charred body of Echo. Rage boiled inside Jaffer as he took a knee and raised his rifle. Making sure to aim the shot well, Jaffer pulled the trigger, sending the timeless bullet rippling through cloth armour of the mage. Running to Echo, Jaffer heard him breathing, his faint gasps becoming more ragged with each breath. Not wanting his companion to suffer so, Jaffer drew his knife and put his close friend out of his pain.

Three months on, and the sting of Echo’s death remains. Jaffer refuses to eat warp burgers, or harm warp stalkers in the wild. Remembering how powerful a companion Echo was, Jaffer has tamed another warp stalker, but the only name he can think of for these majestic creatures is, Echo.

I want to get a name with meaning for the warp ability, but I also want to remember Echo. I’m looking for either male or female names, it doesn’t make a difference. Please help…

One thing I would like to add, I’ll probably be switching to Gezzarak when WotLK comes out. I’ll be keeping the name from this warpstalker, as the story will be that it has grown from a baby, into a full blown stalker. (Cool summon animation and all).

Some suggestions have already been tendered via the forum thread. If you have another suggestion, please feel free to post it there or throw it in the comments here. The more the merrier!

Also, “Nalláma” is Echo in Quenya- a form of Elvish.

Shriek, Thunder, Cry, Roar, or whatever else you think might have been the last sound Echo made when that last Fireball hit. Since you want something that reminds you of echo perhaps what you want is the sound that ’caused’ the Echo to begin with.

    1> Hum

    3> Requiem
    4> Chant

Mimic: Since what we hear in an “echo” is the repetition of an original sound produced and “mimic” is defined as imitative; to copy or resemble closely.

Phase: Warpstalkers are able to phase in and out of sight to gain an advantage over their opponents. The word “phase” is linked to sound and light waves, also known as “echoes”.

Of those previously mentioned in the other forum, I cast my vote for the name Vestige suggested by Akycha.

I suggest, “Protego”. I first heard it in the latest “Harry Potter” movie. I liked it. It’s a shield/spell rebound spell. And I looked it up. It’s Latin. It means “to protect”.
