Name That Pet: Cenisas’ Ravager

Cenisas & RavagerFinal Name: Phobos

Today we have a special Saturday edition of Name That Pet! (… largely because I utterly blanked on posting it yesterday.) Cenisas from the Antonidas realm writes:

Please help me find a name for my beautiful emerald ravager.

I’m a disillusioned level 60 BE Mage that found new life in WoW as a hunter, mainly due to your wonderful site Petopia and your blog (/grin). My love for hunters has driven me to level my hunter very quickly while making some strategic stops at Battleground levels.

I’ve tried almost all different types of pets and have come to a conclusion: I hate cats, everyone has a cat, I’m allergic to cats. But, ravagers are what I’m looking for. They are weird, savage looking, and very rare (at least pre-Outlands for the Horde).

The name of my hunter in Antonidas is Cenisas which means Ashes in Spanish, and the name of my abandoned Mages on the same server are Dante and Alighieri. When it comes to names for my ravager my mind just draws a blank. But I would love a name that would fit with my previous Mages, but more importantly that fits well with my hunter. Please please help.

We’re happy to help! Cenisas has some great character names, though, so I just hope we can come up with something equally great for the ravager.

  1. the only thing i can think of that like your guyses 3 names are

carinthean and arcapellodic (lol i just randomly put big words there)

  2. I tend to associate ravagers with inspiring fear in the enemy, so here are a few suggestions:

Anathema – Cursed or cursed thing
Daghain – Fear (from the Old Tongue language in the Wheel of Time series)
    Deimos – Panic
Formidilosus – (Latin) Causing dread, fear, terror
    Nightmare
    Phobos – Fear

    Good luck naming your ravager!

  3. Based upon your own wishes… following the Divine Comedy theme, the first word to pop into my head was Castigate, which means to subject to severe pain and punishment. Purgatory also has a nice ring to it.

But something kinda knocked me back a little. I pick my pet names very carefully, and have abandoned pets for their cookie cutter appeal. You don’t like cookie cutter, but there are things far more like that than just plain cat pets. One of the most cookie cutter things I’ve noticed is exactly how they name their pets. I have seen more pets named simply with just substituted words from another language, which seems kinda cheap to me. You’re far better off by naming it something that means something to you. My advise to get around such a thing would be to conceptualize your pet, as if it were human. I find nicknaming pets gives them more personality. You only get one space to type a whole name, so for me, it needs to stick seamlessly.

    For example:

I have a pet gorilla. A lil outdated tanking pet, but I can’t imagine ever giving him up. I named him Humpy, and created a macro for him ./shout “Its Humpy Monkey tiiiiiime!” I got alot of laughs, not just for me personally, but lots of groups loved my pet just on that alone.

I also use PetEmote. It’s fantastic and makes a pet more personal, especially if you play with the pet family emotes a little. You can turn an amazingly boring and cookie cutter pet into something really cool and noteworthy.

To illustrate the relation: I was not a fan of cats either. I was using an Owl to do most of my leveling with until 70 and beyond. I had problems raiding with him, because everyone else got tired of listening to his debuff screech, and he wasn’t putting nearly as much dps as other pets were. I decided on a cat finally (ick.. but there were 4 ravagers in our raids at the time.) to be different than them. After a couple months, I actually started to like him. Not because he was a cat, but because he was my cat. Raiders started to actually call him by name, instead of looking at him like as a simple attack pet. Eventually, he replaced my owl. This was simply done by PetEmote. You’d be suprised what what lil addon will do for ya, if youre passionate about your pet. So, literally, the key to naming a pet is your connection to he/she/it.

  4. My orc hunter Skink has had a couple of ravagers. I like to pick a slightly cute name to contrast with the ravager’s fearsome appearance.

I considered calling one Doodlebug but eventually settled on just Bug.

My latest ravager, which is green just like yours, is named Okra. If you’ve ever seen any uncooked okra seed pod, I think you’d agree that they look a bit like a green ravager. And besides, “okra” sounds like a good Orcish word.

  5. for a comical thing id call it “Kat”…..
some more serious names … “Carnage” “Ripper” or just “Ravage” all sound good to me

  6. I named mine Voldo, after the character of that name from the Soul Calibur franchise. If you’ve ever played it you’d know, they both make the same sounds, both are covered in spikes and blades and are generally freaky lookin.

  7. I’m sure he didn’t mean to knock your technical prowess… I think you’ll find he meant Strength is a useless attribute for a hunter as they should be at range – where agility & attack power is the thing that gives you more damage.

  8. Fuego (“fire” in Spanish)
    Azufre (“brimstone” in Spanish)
Infierno (“hell” and “inferno” in Spanish)
    Condenación (“doom” in Spanish)
    Purgatorio (“purgatory” in Spanish)
Requiem (a Mass for the repose of the dead)
Perdition (the loss of the soul)

  9. whoops, forgot one …

Brujería (“witchcraft” in Spanish — since your hunter is a disillusioned BE Hunter/Mage who likes to dabble in arcane magic, I thought this name might fit as well)

  10. FLUFFY! That’s the name of my Pot-bellied Pig. And, it was the name of Cartman’s Pot-bellied pig on South Park. Any animal that is “ferocious” looking and has no hair has to be called FLUFFY! And yes, i have posted this name on here before. lol

  11. Oh yeah, since you are Horde, I would go with GnomeEater. Ravagers are big enough to eat a Gnome. That could work too.

  12. Sorry, didn;t realize you was looking for osmething more serious. OK, here’s one for ya…. Rhiannon… Celtic Goddess… can’t remember the whole thing exactly, but she was something like the Goddess of Dark and Arcane magic….. But she was also in touch with natura Magics too. Something like that might work too.

  13. I second Inferno/Infierno or Requiem or Azufre.

Specially Azufre -> Brimstone/Sulfur, as sulfur has a greenish/yellowish color.

  14. Well, you could always dip into your sin’dorei heritage, for me the ravager is a forceful beast, charging head first into combat with no regard for its own safety so perhaps Fallah’na would fit, Thalassian for literally ‘breaking through’

  15. Hm.. well, he is green, and hard to get as horde.. how about Envy? Doesn’t exactly fit the theme, but it sort of could as envy is one of the ‘seven deadly sins’.

  16. I want to thank everyone so much for all your wonderful suggestions…

…as of right now, I am between three names:

    1) Phobos – because I love seeing little tiny alliance running in fear from my deathbeastie…

    2) Brujeria – because it reminds me of my mage past, and I love the band if you’ve ever had the change to hear it…

    3) Inferno – I closely ties to my previous mages, I love the way it sounds; however, I don’t feel it’s fitting of a green ravager… considering that i’m now so close to OL, I could always get myself a Razorfang Ravager and name him Inferno… now there is a thought. two ravagers are always better than one…

  17. ravager names um lets see:

    aracattack
    scampbit
    elvis
    tripnickerson
fluffy (always good evil pet name)
    oh oh comadorpuddles!!!

……… ok im out of ideas

and can somone tell me on the forums howcome my avatar works on my profile and these posts but not on the forum posts

  18. @ Lianardo

After I uploaded my avatar picture for the first time, I noticed the same issues. I guess it just takes a bit longer for the image to activate on the forums. Give it another 24 hrs. to kick in.

  19. Since fire is your theme, then why not pick “Copper” or “Cuprum” or if you really wanted to reach a bit, Cyprium? Copper burns a very cool green color, kind of similar to the color of the Ravager. Copper Oxide is also an interesting Green color (Statue of Liberty color).

    Or, Snuggles, Snookums, or Dog.

  20. Gerence small hungarian river, means backbone(old word, nowadays we use gerinc word which means backbone)
    Mancs means paw
    Karom means claw
    Kutya means dog
Vuk —> lord of the animals in hungarian tale(V.U.K.Vadászok utamból kotródj=Hunters get away from me)
    Szellem means ghost
    Harap means bite
    Pokol means hell
IMO these words are lesser used and more exotic then japanise ones :)

  21. Ok, it’s final! The name I decided to give my accomplice in Murder and Mayhem is Phobos.

Someone told me this week “There is nothing to fear but fear itself.” This way, it’s kind of understandable when they run away… even if it’s just for a little bit…

Thank you to everyone for all your wonderful suggestions. I’m even thinking of getting a second red ravager just to call it Inferno.

And last but not least, Thank you so much for all your help, and everything else you do for us hunters Mania.

    ~Cenisas
