Name That Pet: Nalain’s Wolf

Nalain & WolfFinal Name: Tiarna

Today’s episode of Name That Pet features a wonderful story from Nalain, a Night Elf hunter from the EU, PvP-realm of Kor’gall. (It also features a guest appearance by Kaet!)

Nalain writes:

Nalain is a seasoned Hunter who loves to take things easy, explore the world of Azeroth and help it’s people at the same time.

She is very laid-back, likes a laugh, is patient, cares for her family and pets, is a real goldigger who would farm for 1½ hour just for the heck of it, even if the profit was low, and she loves fluffy and cuddly pets. She rarely cries or gets angry and hates to kill animals. Ogres, Orcs or any other sort of Horde would be okay though. She loves to go to that special place called Alterac Valley or Warsong Gulch just to have some fun. And she enjoys it.

She has had many interesting pets during the days. Just to name a few: a pink tallstrider named Rosie, a white wolf named Nishinki, a brown owl named Elleoce and a Ghost Saber named Mina. Mina and Elleoce are still with her, but both Rosie and Nishinki was longing for freedom and being the animal-lover she is, she couldn’t stand to see their eyes look to the horizont. She did, however want a new wolf, seeing as wolves always had had a soft spot in her heart.

She then went to the library of Stormwind in search of an index of wolves over Azeroth and Outlands but she wasn’t able to find one. She did, however, read about a place called Petopia, owned by a girl called Mania, that worked like an index of wolves except that it had records of every pet in the world, helpful tips, worked hard to keep up with everything new about the pets, and had a friendly, and alive community. It wasn’t just a book, it was a real place, and it sounded amazing.

So Nalain took the first boat that sailed from Menethil and after 2 days of sailing, she arrived at the little island called Petopia. Petopia was like a big park. A lot of animals were on the island, in the sky, in the sea, on the beach, in the caves or underneath the trees, either relaxing, playing or eating. There had to be over 100 animals!. They all seemed to be friendly, but she didn’t dare to touch.

She walked around for a bit and eventually stumbled across a beautiful, but huge, black-colored wolf, sitting in a cave. It had friendly eyes and Nalain fell in love. ‘Can I help you?’ someone asked from behind. Nalain turned around, looked down, and saw a redheaded Dwarf smiling up at her. She knew that had to be Mania.

‘Hello my name is Kaet, I’m a volunteer at this place. Mania is in Northrend at the moment but should be back soon,’ the Dwarf, Kaet, said. Nalain smiled, a bit shy now. She had never really met a Dwarf and didn’t know about Northrend.

‘The big, black wolf over there is so cute,’ Nalain pointed behind her. ‘ What’s its name?’

‘Oh that is one beautiful pet you’ve laid your eyes on! She’s a bit of a handful, but once she gets to know you she’ll be a loyal companion forever.’ Nalain didn’t doubt that. ‘Her name is Rema, The Den Mother. Mania tamed this one a long time ago, so you can’t get her. But her heiress can be found in Blade Edge’s Mountains in Outland. Her name is Rema too. But mind you, she is a handful, as I said.’

Nalain thanked her and asked if it was okay she looked a bit more around. She did look and she saw a beautiful Dragonhawk too … But her mind kept going back to Rema and its friendly eyes and soft-looking fur. She knew she had to get her.

So she took the next boat from Petopia after having thanked Kaet. Before she left, Kaet told her that if she had trouble naming her new pet, Petopia would love to help her out.

Nalain had been in Blade Edge’s Mountains before, but that was to honor the flames during Midsummer. She had never explored it, so she asked her boyfriend, a more seasoned Shaman, if he knew where to find Rema. He did, and together they went on to find her, protecting eachother from the dangerous Worgs and Chimeras in the forests of Blade Edge’s Mountains.

They soon found Rema and she was just as beautiful as Mania’s pet, but she was very huge. Almost scared Nalain, but her boyfriend told her that he’d be there if things went wrong, which it wouldn’t do. It never had. Nalain felt a bit better.

Nalain & WolfShe moved closer to the majestic wolf and was shocked by its beauty. She took a deep breath, and started singing out the beautiful, calming words her very first mentor had told her. Rema reacted. She sprang up and ran at high speed towards Nalain, who kept singing. Nalain had, however, placed a trap to slow the wolf down a bit and with the words still chanting, the wolf soon stood by her side.

She couldn’t believe it! This magnificent beautiful and huge wolf was now hers. Hers all alone and she saw the same look that Mina and Elleoce had had: they’d never part. She sat down and fed the big wolf a chunk of meat, and then did what she had wanted to do for a long time: she gave Rema a big hug and the fur was as soft as she had imagined. She couldn’t believe how lucky she was.

I don’t roleplay, but I do like a backstory and this is how I met Rema. I love grinding and collecting vanity pets. I’m survival and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world and I love both PvP and Instances. Rema will be an Instance wolf.

I know I’ve called Rema for Rema during my whole story, but I don’t want her final name to be that. I’m looking for something cute, Japanese maybe, but also something you’d call a wolf. Majestic maybe or a sorta angelish/godessish name, something that’s different. I’m really up for anything, as long as they feel good and sound good. I just don’t want names like Blackpaw or Blackfur. I want a real name so to speak.

I really hope this is not too much to ask for and I really hope you can help me =)

Remember to hug your pet today!

The creativity of hunters never fails to amaze me. (And yes, I think I’ll go hug my pets right now!) But when we get back from that, let’s see what we can do to find the perfect name for Nalain’s great wolf.

    Lycan

  3. Mania - August 22nd, 2008 @ 3:39 pm UTC

Cenisas: Oddly Lycan was the name of a hunter alt I rolled just to tame wolves. Unfortunately she didn’t make it through the alt purge of 2005.

Kristy: When I remember, I pre-write and schedule Name That Pet posts. But in this case you’re right — I’m up. And I’ll get back to work now, promise. *grin*

Great story! My Night Elf hunter’s main pet, ‘Kibbles’, was a Rema as well. Here’s a couple names for you:

Inari: The Japanese god/goddess of rice. The female version is a woman with a fox’s tail, and is also considered the goddess of swords.
Zyanya: Means “Forever, Always” in Nahuatl. (A Native American language)
Thandeka: “Beloved” in Zulu (An African language, I think…)

I also second Niabi’s suggestion of ‘Tsuki’, ‘Tenshi’, and ‘Kirei’.
    Good luck! =)

  13. Seveil - August 22nd, 2008 @ 7:51 pm UTC

    Kikita, Maya, Kairial

  14. Drakkena - August 22nd, 2008 @ 8:10 pm UTC

If you’re looking for a few names there are some that I can suggest. Besides Mononoke you could call it after Moro, the princess adopted wolf mother in the movie.

But here are some others that I found while looking about =3

Congratulations on taming one of the most beautiful wolves in WoW! I used to have Snarler myself, who uses the same model. I named him Fenris. Not very original, but I felt that it suited him.

Here are a couple more Japanese suggestions:

    Tanrei – Grace, beauty, elegance
Sutamina – Stamina, energy (these wolves are always moving and give the impression of boundless energy, unlike the worgs)
Mikomi – Hope (I don’t know why, but it seems right somehow)

    Good luck naming your wolf!

i agree with wulfric from the long list of wolf names
1.cause wolves are one of the greatest support pets (if not the best)
    2. people need to b reminded of how good they are in support
    3.cause it sounds cool
    4. it just matches a wolf with black skin
    5. YOU SHOULD DO IT

if thats not enough then u b crazy i am a 66 hunter on uldum i also have rema and named it wulfric for those 5 reasons u should to remind every1 how great wolves are

    No mercy for the weak
    No pity for the old
    No sympathy for the dead
    -my motto

Tiarna! I love that name!=D from now on, my Wolf shall be known as Tiarna. Thank you Penumra ^_^

But I was wondering, does it mean anything in a particular language? No matter what, I love it =)

Thank you to everyone who suggested=)

Lovely choice! I just googled “Tiarna” and found this. Maybe it’s what Penumbra was thinking when suggesting the name.

Russian- Fairy Queen; Graceful princess; Rainbow.

    Sounds reasonable to me.
