The Mystic Hunter: Pet Family Review

Znodis at The Mystic Hunter has been working on a full, in-depth review of all the current pet families for quite some time now. He’s tamed an example of each family, leveled it to 70, and then tested it out against various types of gameplay. It hasn’t been quick or easy for him, but he has been most generous in making the results quick and easy for the rest of us.

And now he’s done! Znodis announced yesterday that all 23 pet families have been reviewed. (Technically he’s still got a little bit of leveling left on the hyena, but given that hyenas are so similar to wolves, plus the fact that he’s hunted with a hyena extensively before, he was able to post the review already.)

You can find the overall rankings on the main Pet Family Review page. Znodis has said he will be adding more ranked lists (for instance by category and stats) soon. You should also check out his Methodology, which contains important notes about the results.

  1. Nice information… Don’t envy him the job of re-doing that when WoTLK comes out – expecially with the additional pet families and complete pet makeover!

  2. That is very handy info! I do feel bad it was just finished with the Wrath pet revamp though. It will be much easier I guess with the auto 5 levels below though.

    Happy hunting.

As of right now, I have no plans to do this at level 80. I’m going to take 70-80 nice and easy.

I am in the beta and do plan to talk about the new 3 categories, how to spec and such. Once hyenas are actually done, I’m going to be focusing on pet choice in WotLK for a bit.

  4. All I could think is-

He finishes this with just a few months to go until Wrath. He’s going to have to start it all over again!

  5. Personally I think it shows tremendous dedication, not just to finish this with Wrath on the horizon, but to finish it with a beta account burning a hole in his pocket. *grin*

But we still have .. what? three to six more months? … of Burning Crusade mechanics. And I expect that Znodis’ reviews will be extremely helpful to an awful lot of hunters during those long months.

  6. What I liked seeing was the breakdown of PVE vs PVP vs Instance, etc. Many hunters don’t seem to utilize their extra stable slot (I figure one for PVE pet, one for your other either PVP or raid pet and the third open for the training pet) in this manner. Of course, end game, you have a spot for your PVE pet, your raid pet and your PVP/Arena pet and life is good lol.
