King Dred: Boss Pet

WotLK: King Dred Beast Lore(For best results, read title in early-’80s accent.)

King Dred is the second boss in the Wrath instance of Drak’Tharon Keep. He’s a hulking huge red devilsaur with a secret identity — as a hunter pet! Yup — King Dred can be tamed.

WotLK: Wild King DredCeron was the first person to let me know about this strange circumstance and send me screenshots of King Dred in his wild glory (complete with Beast Lore info)yesterday, with nobbie from the German site WorldofWar.de following soon after. (The picture here is nobbie’s because it was slightly more clear.)

But neither had tamed the King at that point (as far as I know). That accomplishment waited for Amuneta and friends (all originally from the Ghostlands realm) to gang up on the poor giant devilsaur last night.

Amuneta writes:

WotLK: King Dred Tamed

To explain this was tamed with alot of help. My boyfriend on his shaman was healing me, my 2 best friends Hadgibaba on his hunter IL and Wolfjin. Also my other friend Auribear was there on his druid to pick it up in case something went wrong.

This was tamed with Heroism, Drums of Battle, shaman totems and misdirects from both hunters to keep aggro on me. I started off with a Distracting Shot into an Immolation Trap for extra aggro, popped my Battle Master trinket for extra health, and started taming.

That’s a shot of her with her newly tamed Dred to the right. Sounds like quite an adventure, but well worth the effort!

What else is there to say but gratz on a really nice (and tough!) tame. Wonder how long he’s going to stay tameable though?

  2. Amuneta - August 16th, 2008 @ 3:41 pm EDT

    Thanks :)

I think a challenge was just issued to the Beta Beast Masters :P

    Grats on your amazing tame.

  4. Grimmtooth - August 16th, 2008 @ 4:04 pm EDT

Do you get credit for downing the boss if you tame him?

  5. Keilden - August 16th, 2008 @ 4:18 pm EDT

Dang that must be the biggest size change I have seen.

  6. Palladiamors - August 16th, 2008 @ 4:23 pm EDT

    That….is amazing. Good job!

  7. bradagore - August 16th, 2008 @ 4:26 pm EDT

Maybe that tempest keep warp stalker *is* doable then…

I second Grimmtooth though - what the hell happens to the encounter when the boss “defects”? Can you get him to eat his own adds?

  8. Yossir - August 16th, 2008 @ 4:34 pm EDT

This is sort of like Kresh in WC only at a much higher level. I kinda doubt Dred will be tamable in the live version.

  9. Snowstrider - August 16th, 2008 @ 4:47 pm EDT

Do all Devilsaurs get that +20% threat modifier? I can’t say I’ve noticed that bit on any of the beast lore screenshots I’ve seen from the beta.

  10. Mania - August 16th, 2008 @ 4:52 pm EDT

Snowstrider: That actually indicates that the hunter has 20% threat from the untamed beast. It’s part of the new built-in threat display for all players in the beta and it shows up on all creature tooltips (when you have threat), not just Beast Lore. Sorry about the confusion!

Kai: I can’t get e-mail back to you from any address. The error I get is:
553 553 sorry, mail to that recipient is not accepted (#5.7.1) (state 14). Otherwise I seem to be getting e-mail fine (rather too fine — I have over 100 message in my inbox!) So I’m not sure what’s going on.

Interesting. Anyone notice thsi Dinosaur does NOT have all the spikes an horns that the other devilsaurs do? That IMO makes him much cooler. Or is it just the way the screenshots are? Any confirmation on this?

Not sure about horns I’ll look closer when I get back ingame but he does have spikes on his back.

  16. Deathbang - August 16th, 2008 @ 7:41 pm EDT

I have to say it is a cool feature. I doubt it will go live and I find the effort pointless. He’s not a unique skin so it’s impossible to tell whether the pet came from Un’goro or this guy. I think the photos are accurate I’m just saying you only get limited bragging rights in game. IMO just hit Un’goro.

  17. Nightranger - August 16th, 2008 @ 8:26 pm EDT

Will some1 PLEASE!!!!!! see if the Phase-Hunter in Arcatraz is tameable!!!!!

And gratz on tameing a GREAT PET!!!

  18. Palladiamors - August 16th, 2008 @ 8:53 pm EDT

Not to sound like a jerk, but please stop being a buzzkill, Deathbang. They did an amazing job, and its worth more the just ‘limited’ bragging rights, to be able to tame a boss is nothing short of an amazing feat of skill.

  19. Zalthor - August 16th, 2008 @ 9:17 pm EDT

    agreed

  20. Syrelil-Sentinels - August 16th, 2008 @ 9:33 pm EDT

    I wants mah beta key.. ; ;
XD Darnit. Nice tame, awesome pet.

  21. Snowstrider - August 16th, 2008 @ 9:44 pm EDT

Oh, right, forgot about the new threat meter, that would make more sense.

  22. Wolfington - August 16th, 2008 @ 10:23 pm EDT

Spikes and horns? Other than the back spikes, devilasuars don’t seem to have any spikes and horns :-/

    Thats like taming a ghost wolf… Times 100. Good job! ! !

  23. Drakkena - August 16th, 2008 @ 10:46 pm EDT

    @Deathbang

I agree with the previous poster as well. Taming a boss is NOTHING that you shouldn’t brag about. Especially something like this, unlike Kresh… King Dred seems one of those awesome once in a life time bosses. Despite him might NOT going to the live world it’s something worth a lot of effort to tame.

ALSO! On the second screenshot it IS King Dred because 1) Any hunter who has TAMED a devilsaur and leveled it up would NOT have it UNHAPPY! 2) Where’s King Dred’s corpse is he was killed? I see no dead dino there. 3) What hunter goes into a boss fight with an unfeed, unHAPPY pet?

Really now, I know it’s not a unique skin and all but there are several things that display HEY! Freshly tamed creature here in the secondary screenshot. And really, everyone has the right to brag about something this big.

That being said CONGRATS to those who have gone through hell and back to tame this guy. And if he DOES make it live, hey! All of those Exotic BM tamers have a big ultimate goal to go for if they want a red skinned Devilsaur and don’t want to grind it up 5 levels to 70 8P

  24. Nimizar - August 16th, 2008 @ 11:13 pm EDT

Given the group effort involved, I don’t see why they wouldn’t let this go live. It’s not like you’re going to have J. Random Hunter decide to tame that boss during a PuG run and have it do anything other than fail because the hunter doesn’t have enough threat for the duration of the tame. And unlike ghost wolves, the devilsaur boss will already have full player pet animations because it shares a skin with one of the ones in Un’Goro.

  25. shibumi - August 17th, 2008 @ 12:53 am EDT

Tend to agree with the general consensus about the tame, not the brag. Whether a pet has a skin that is unique or not means zip to me. period. I look at them for ability, and the challange of the tame. I don’t care, and never have, if another soul on the game notices I have a critter or not. that’s the nice thing about being solo.

If, though, your enjoyment comes from showing off your pets (like the folks that crowd the mailboxes and banks with pets (or mounts) that make it impossible to use the banks or mailboxes) then I can see the point of it making a difference. Personally, just like I would in RL, I put the pet on ’stay’ when I get to a bank, and leave em outside. I don’t think anyone cares, but it’s a good habit.

As for unique skins - yeah well. bout the only two that attracted me are:

    1. ghost wolf, more for the challage (and THAT was a challage) than the skin
    2. the demon wolves posted here a day or so ago.

yeah I’ll get a devilsaur, mostly because I want to tame that bum that smooshed me. Keep it? dunno, depends on how it works out.

but my gaming has never been with an iota of care if someone else was going to be impressed or not. Much like RL

  26. agnidragon - August 17th, 2008 @ 1:48 am EDT

Not worth it at all. The 55 devilsaurs in un goro crater look tons better, are easier to tame, and have the exact same abilities to boot. Heck I’ve seen normal pre TBC raptors that look better then King Dred does. Unlike the Ghost Wolf or Numeroc, King Dred doesn’t even have a cool unique skin. Which means taming King Dred would be a complete waste of not only your time, but the time of all your buddies along with it.

    Blizzard better reskin King Dred.

  27. Palladiamors - August 17th, 2008 @ 3:21 am EDT

*Rolls his eyes* Come ON, for the love of god, they tamed a BOSS. Not a normal mob, not an elite mob, a high level, angry boss. Its not a matter of it being worth it or not, its a matter of finding a way to do it, and DOING it. Have so few of you people ever tried to do insane things, regardless of risk/reward? Like saying “Hey, I wonder if I can sneak through X instance to get Y pet?” or even “I wonder if I can solo that group quest?” ? Its not about looks, its not about what anyone else thinks, its about whether or not you have the gumption to TRY. I regurlarly two man instances on the level. Why? Because its a challenge, its just something I want to do, to see if I can do it. Lord almighty people, lighten up and have a bit more fun with the game, instead of almost bashing those who do. Don’t like the skin? No one says YOU gotta tame it, but that sure don’t give you the right to semi-tear down some one elses achievements.

  28. Thjazi - August 17th, 2008 @ 4:35 am EDT

firstly great job on the tame.
secondly something that has nothning to do with the tame or anything like that.
I have noticed on severel screenshots from the beta, including the ones on this post, that on the minimap, the buttom that right now shows the time of day (day / night), in beta shows a number, was wondering what that number stands for

  29. MrHunter - August 17th, 2008 @ 5:20 am EDT

Thjazi, that number is the date. The sun/moon have been replaced by an in-game calendar that has all the events (Darkmoon Fair, pvp bg weekend, etc). You won’t have to have a mod for it anymore.
I’ve heard the calendar can also have events added to it by your GM, etc.

  30. Amuneta - August 17th, 2008 @ 8:39 am EDT

Just wanted to say thanks again for everyone beening so supportive :) (for the most part). My friend Wolfjin intends to try this as well once he hits the level lol

  31. Kristy - August 17th, 2008 @ 1:54 pm EDT

    Congratulations, Amuneta

  32. Jindar - August 17th, 2008 @ 10:51 pm EDT

What happened to the instance, though? I rather doubt a feat like that could be pulled off without something bugging, since, well, normally boss-deaths trigger stuff…

  33. Elsi - August 17th, 2008 @ 11:02 pm EDT

Ya know..the Black Stalker in UB is listed as a beast…anyone check him out yet?

  34. Nimizar - August 18th, 2008 @ 6:36 am EDT

None of the other walkers are tamable, so I wouldn’t the Black Stalker to be either.

I doubt this particular devilsaur will be tameable after beta, seeing as it is a boss. but I am really hoping all devilsaurs will, its my most long awaited change since serpents.

Nice grab XD I can only say that if this does go through to live, it should really be an achievement or something.

    That’d be really awesome ^_^
