I got an interesting e-mail yesterday from a hunter by the name of Verun (who is also a warlock known as Basmothel). Verun wrote:
It seems Vicious Teromoths in Terokkar keep their Mana Bomb glow post taming. Not only do they keep the effect, they make a certain “pop” noise when summoned, as if they’re being afflicted by the effects of the radiation.
Now this isn’t quite on the same scale as Gezzarak’s summoning animation, but it’s still pretty cool. So while I was in the area last night I stopped to check it out.
I was disappointed to find, however, that my Vicious Teromoth became a perfectly normal green/red moth after I tamed him. Since Verun had written to me before the newest patch and I had logged in afterwards, I figured that I had missed my chance and Blizzard had fixed this behavior.
So I mounted up and flew to Shattrath. And when I dismounted in Shattrath … *pop* A glowy blue moth!
I tamed another couple just to test, but it seems that, for some reason, the Vicious Teromoth loses his blue mana bomb glow when he’s tamed — and then he gets it back again as soon as you dismiss him, either explicitly or automatically (i.e. by mounting).
The pictures below are the exact same moth. The one on the left was taken just after I tamed him; the one of the right was taken a few minutes later after I dismissed and recalled the moth. These pictures aren’t greatest, but if you look closely you can see the blue smoke coming off the righthand moth.
Thanks to Verun for letting us in on this cool little feature!

sweet now im rethinking on getting the white moth
hope there are more things like this on like exotic pets
This is awesome. Its unfortunate that Blizzard will more than likely “fix” this bit of hunter flavor in an upcoming build. This brings us up to what, three pet summons with special flare to them. These are one of the basic tenants of being a hunter. The class has lore and flavor that other classes do not. I really do hope they leave these in.
Two of the three “flare” pets do not even have a real place anywhere higher than normal questing. But they are fun to have around.
Moths aren’t exotic by the way – they’re available to any hunter, unlike the devilsaurs, worms, chimeras and silithids (which all exotic and require the 51-point BM talent).
You know, if Blizz has any sense they won’t fix it. Hunters everywhere seem to drool the moment there’s anything different about their pet – a unique skin (only one black lion, after all), skill, whatever, and unique summoning feature. Heck, I’ve hunted all over both Azeroth and Outlands and my pets are Trachela (who can turn down a 2-headed white vulture I ask you!?!??!?) and a ripfang that I’ll keep summoning and dismissing just to get the orange/purple skin >_< If they appeared in a puff of smoke or something like that I’d be in hunter heaven!!
The only reason I see to fix these moths is because they are the only ones with that red/green skin. But of course they could just add new red/green moths … :>
i like them eather way.but if they dont change it,ill probubly get one for an alt who was gonna get a moth anyway, since theyre the only ones that are really green right now.so many pets,so little space or time…
These would look great in a screenshot alongside the tiny red moth vanity pet. I’m certainly gonna tame one of these to see what I think of them.
Amazing discovery! :D I hope Blizzard doesn’t fix it at all! x.x I was sort of guessing that they would keep that aura however, since it is only beta.
sara get that windserpent from the horde quest in thousend needles he comes in a puff of smoke lol i hope more of these kinda things get introdused to the game for the fun of it
since that mana bomb aura is actually a debuff… are these pets permanently affected by it? or is it strictly looks?
I still want a chimaera there really epic.
I actually like the red color. I was looking at these moths the other day, in preparation for taming my own when the expansion is released, and was dissapointed that they didn’t look like the picture on the Moth Page here. Now I know why.
If they retain the mana-bomb cloud, I can be happy for those who like it, but I’ll probably get a white one then.
Noba: No debuff shows on the pet, so I believe it’s just looks. I’ll take a look at their stats if I have a chance to verify that.
Maybe Blizzard will “fix” this, and maybe they won’t. Considering they still haven’t fixed the Ripblade Ravager randomly spawning in one of three different skins (ugly-ugly-a$$ tan, ugly black/purple and – least likely of all, the orange/black/purple/blue skin that is unique to these ravagers and the reason I originally tamed it), I wouldn’t put too much stock on them actually getting around to DOING it.
If you recall, they actually did fix the color-shifting Sons of Hakkar you can tame in Zulgurub, but apparantly they’re too good to do something about the ravager issue… *grumble grumble*
Then again, Blizzard ruined the ravager as a pure maximum DPS pet by making it cunning despite it’s the most ferocious-looking of all tameable pets in outland so I’ll probably just toss him if he continues to colorshift in the expansion… Sheesh!
“since that mana bomb aura is actually a debuff… are these pets permanently affected by it? or is it strictly looks?”
The Mana Bomb aura is only a debuff on players. The Vicious Teromoths have it still in the wild if you pull them out of the debuff range, thus it is apparently something triggered to stay on them once they spawn.
Though I do seem to get some odd AoE aggro on my Moth pet at times, I haven’t gotten a chance to play around in Beta for a few days to test exactly what it is (already know it isn’t Serenity Dust), but I wasn’t able to pull aggro off of adds with Multi-Shot. Yet at other times it works perfectly normal.
@FaaR
“Considering they still haven’t fixed the Ripblade Ravager randomly spawning in one of three different skins ”
Working as intended. They programed them to behave that way, so why would they fix something that isn’t bugged?
o so cool!!
After being tamed for several months, mine just lost its glow – and is not regaining it no matter how many times I dismiss/summon or mount/dismount… has anyone else encountered this?
